Replaying AA and wow I feel so goddamn sorry for Maya. From the beginning to the end of the trilogy so many people see her as Mia's younger sister first and foremost. Fandom Problem #5004:

"It's not canon, but someone who works on the show wants it to be canon" okay, that doesn't really mean anything though. Unless they're specifically in the writers room, that cleanup animator or colorist's headcanons or ships are no more valid than any other fanfic author or fan artist. Besides, positions switch in and out season by season. It's cool someone that works on the show agrees with you, but their opinion only holds as much weight as any other fan.
