If this doesn’t get into Kingdom Hearts III, then SquareEnix truly doesn’t have a sense of humor.

“What happens when people die?”
“Long ago, in some world, people believed that they become beautiful beings with small wings when they die. What nonsense. “

Episode 1294: Athena Joins a Conversation
Translator Notes:
Technically, Athena was thinking something closer to “I need to say something interesting”, but that didn’t really quite convey the right idea in English, so I slightly modified it to be what you see here.

So you’re a young lady living in Mulan’s village. Like the other girls you get all dolled up and go to the matchmaker to find a husband.
The local tomboy goes first so you’re chilling outside, psyching yourself up, chatting up the gals, when you hear a crash from inside followed by screaming.
Out runs the matchmaker, she’s covered in ink and on fire. Mulan throws an entire kettle of steaming tea in her face. The matchmaker yells at her that she will never be married or bring her family honor. It’s been at most five minutes.
What do you do? Do you just, like, go home? Explain to your family you didn’t get a husband cause your neighbor set the matchmaker on fire? Do you go inside and try your luck at getting a husband on the 50-50 shot she gives all the well behaved girls good husbands out of spite while risking her foul mood giving everyone shitty matches?
Idk I just wanna know how that afternoon went for everyone else there.

I know I keep talking about it, but damn, I’m a sucker for great art direction and shot composition, and Land of the Lustrous in all of its forms excels at both, for example:
This is an early page from the manga, which takes full advantage of the black and white style, using negative space and a distorted background to convey distance, scale and the struggle the character is facing.

Here’s artwork made in preparation for production of the CGI series, which had to adapt itself to the use of colors and more detailed backgrounds, achieving both objectives marvelously.
And here’s the finished product, although as a still it doesn’t make justice to the animation going on, from the moving grass, the growing rorschach in the sky, to the subtle movements of their hair and sword, and if you check the art book of the show, there’s tons of examples:
Manga

Book
Series
And we’re not just talking about characters standing in negative space backgrounds, there’s also great examples of abstract processes, in this case, a PTSD-induced hallucination.
From excellent use of blacks.

Colors and scale
To a downright gorgeous CGI transition, taking full advantage of the 3D medium.
This series is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I’ve ever seen, and I hope someday you guys give it a chance too, you won’t regret it!
