Lingering HC of mine about Mr. Crawling's past

I've made up a really dark plot with Cinna accditentaly.

I reread The hunger games recntly. I've seen thg films only fragmentary, so I had very a vague idea about the plot of the series. I remember scene from the third movie where some woman tells the cat-like creature somehing like "He threw you away when you stop being youseful/when he played enough" My brain connected this blurred memory whith Cinna's arrest in catcing fire and the fact that there wasn't actual information about his status for long narrative time. I thougt that if thay had avoxes, maybe thay will have another way to punish people through forced changing of their bodies. Idia of turning character, who chose to look minimalistic and who's act of rebellion consisted in creating a simbol from Katniss, into some grotesque creature against his will is sooo angast. I fell in love with this idea at the first sight.

When I finished reading The mockingjay I found out that it was only Tigris (and her story in some way is more depressive than the story which I made up). However I still want to reade or roleplay something like that. Maybe version where Cinna survives, but becomes avox. I start write it already, but I doubt I can finish it. Can anyone recommend me a similar ff?

what makes Snow such a formidable villain within THG universe is that nothing he does was set in stone. there was no sense of inevitability about his actions and his brutality. Snow had enough perspective of poverty, capital cruelty, district hunger and not to mention his own arena experience’ and yet he actively chose at every moment to stray from natural goodness. its even more terrifying in the sense that he had the ability to care. Snow is not a mindless sociopath, he displays feelings to others such as sejanus, lucy grey and tigris but ultimately he will always choose himself. his ability to betray those he cared about in order yo advance himself makes him so much more than the stereotypical villain who is forced into his actions.

SO I TRIED, to make a Martin-monster menacing, but every time I was thinking of FOG creatures, it was just something blobish, not quiet there, blurry edges. He looks more like a ghibli fellow than an eldritch horror skskss. Might explore more later. Now they lookin cute 🥹

Homicipher Theory

Mr. Crawling: The Persecuted Martyr

(Keep in mind that we’re given very minimal information on any of the characters in game, so this is all speculation/theorizing/headcanon. In fact, this entire theory could be a result of mere coincidence, but the parallels were too exciting for me not to adopt this as my personal theory for who Mr. Crawling was.)

If we look at the game through a simplistic lens, Mr. Crawling honestly seems like a riff on malevolent Japanese entities from 2000’s horror movies. The Ring, Grudge… I mean, look at him. The long black hair, always crawling up out of holes, the random room down the hall from where we meet him which has a magical and demonic TV. He really could be (and in all likelihood) is simply an entity inspired by those modern horror tropes.

But, if we get creative and look beyond the obvious, we could run into some fascinating possibilities.

I’ve previously stated that I think the Ghost Apartments exist on haunted grounds that have been there for centuries, dating as far back as the Edo period. I think that the two ghosts most likely from this era of feudal Japan are Mr. Hood and Mr. Crawling. I’ve theorized in another post that Mr. Hood died as a dishonored samurai, committing seppuku after some act of treason.

As for Mr. Crawling? I theorize that he was a Christian martyr during the Edo period, an era of intense Christian persecution throughout Japan.

Hear me out. I know, I know, religious persecution topics in my horror game safe space = blech. There’s also no religious iconography in the game, so again, totally off the wall theory here but you might like the idea of it!

What do we know for certain about Mr. Crawling?

1) He wears what appears to be a layer of a tattered yukata. This doesn’t necessarily mean that he must have been from feudal Japan, as people in Japan do still wear traditional yukata and kimono for some events. But let’s say that his yukata does indicate that he’s from that era.

2) He has extremely long, black hair. This is rather uncommon in modern Japan for men. Long hair is seen as unprofessional, so you’re not likely to run into many men with luscious silky hair that runs to their knees. Longer hair on men was more common back in the Edo era, though, take this with a grain of salt as well, as these styles often involved shaving parts of the head. Hair like Mr. Crawling’s actually would have had more similarity with Chinese men of the era, who could have very long hair which was traditionally worn up.

The fact that his hair is black rather than gray/silver indicates to me that he is a Resident ghost. In my last theory, I suggested that there are three major types of entities in the Ghost Apartments, most distinguishable by their hair and capacity for change. Visitor ghosts (ghosts of people who wandered into the haunted world) have gray and dulling hair, whereas Resident ghosts died on the haunted grounds and retain their hair color.

3) He has no eyes or eyes that cannot see, as well as what appears to be damaged, possibly burned, skin across his eyes and forehead.

4) He cannot walk. Though, this isn’t entirely true. There is one ending we can get where Mr. Crawling does rise to his feet in defense of us, but that’s the only time we ever see him stand. He tells us early game that he doesn’t use his legs, he uses his arms to get around. Maybe walking isn’t easy or is painful for him.

5) He is friendly and self-sacrificing. There is no ghost in the game as friendly, forgiving, self-sacrificing, loyal, or loving as Mr. Crawling.

With all of these traits in mind, let’s now take a look at Ana-tsurushi.

Ana-tsurushi: A Horrible Torture

At this time in history, to be Christian in Japan was a death sentence. The persecution of Christians was violent and unrelenting. Torture was often used in an effort to force Christians to renounce their faith. Interestingly, most of these forms of torture involved the legs being bound or damaged. Burning at the stake was done with tied legs, one method of torture included tying weights to both legs while the victim sat on an iron horse. Another, specifically for women, was for them to crawl on their hands and knees through town naked.

And then there’s Ana-tsurushi.

This method of torture was particularly cruel. A deep pit was dug and usually had excrement lining the bottom of it. A metal frame was set over the pit, and then the Christian was tied by the legs upside down over the pit. A gash was carved on their forehead, and they were lowered into the pit and then boarded inside of it. They hung like that for days, being drawn up out of the pit whenever they passed out and given an opportunity to renounce their faith. If they did not, it was back into the pit, dangling upside down and bleeding in the darkness.

Picture it. A living Mr. Crawling, devoted to the wrong faith at the wrong time. But a man so steadfast in his devotion to that faith, that he refused to renounce it, even after days of horrific torture. Even after blood filled his eyes and then dripped into his hair. Even after his legs were rendered completely unusable from days of constriction. Through all of that, he remained loyal to his faith. Until the day this torture finally killed him.

Now, we have a ghost with just as much devotion and loyalty as that man, though directed at us now. A ghost who, arguably, receives nearly as much torture from us as he did in his life. We’re in a cycle of abusing him, hitting him, abandoning him, trying to kill him. And yet, he refuses to leave us. Even if we completely ignore his presence and return to the real world, he will haunt us and wait to be with us again. Even if our body grows cold, he will not step away from our sleeping form.

So, is it a crack theory? Sure, absolutely. But does it have cool connections and fun coincidences that could explain Mr. Crawling as we know him? I think so!

I haven’t finished the game, so this is a developing theory as I play. I’ve unlocked some endings. The “happy” ending, the Mr Gap endings, the observation experiment, and Mr Hood’s route. So, this is just my flow of thought

The Ghost Apartments

What are they? What is this place, technically?

We wake up in a world that’s a labyrinth of concrete halls, dilapidated rooms, and rubble. We find rooms with couches, tables, beds—standard apartment stuff. But we also find rooms with hospital beds and operating tables. Occasionally, we also find ourselves strangely in what look to be subway tunnels. It’s established that we’re somewhere in Tokyo, but in some lower ward or spirit ward of it. Earthquakes change the layout of the maze nearly constantly. We find both modern and old technology. A TV, various telephones from different stages of technology as far back as rotary phones.

It would be easy to say that it’s all just random spooky environments but that’s obviously not the case because there are clear themes.

I suspect that the Ghost Apartments are on haunted grounds, meaning it’s not the building itself that’s haunted but the property that it’s on.

Ms Nurse wears a long white nursing gown and cap reminiscent of early 1900’s Japanese nurse uniforms. We can be confident of the time period because Japanese nurses wore blue gowns prior to British influence around the 1920’s.

It seems obvious to me that there was once a hospital on these grounds, sometime in the 1900’s. This is likely the time period that Ms Nurse and Mr Silvair are from.

The late 1920’s is when Japan began to build its subway infrastructure. I believe that a subway must have been built on the haunted grounds (keeping in mind that haunted grounds don’t necessarily follow the zones/boundaries assigned to locations after they become haunted. Meaning that the boundaries of the haunted area might extend past where the hospital was built, such as a nearby road, or in this case, a nearby subway system).

Due to the constant presence of earthquakes in the ghost apartments, I think it’s safe to say that an earthquake befell the haunted grounds at some point, which I believe collapsed the subway system running near it.

Obviously the setting is fictitious, so this isn’t necessarily going to have real world parallels, but I did google and discover the Dakai Subway collapse of 1995, which was caused by an earthquake. This wasn’t in Tokyo, but could have been inspiration for the history of the apartments.

So, let’s assume an earthquake caused both the collapse of the subway and the previously built hospital on the haunted grounds sometime in the 90’s. Personally, I think it fits, as we have some modernly dressed ghosts who I believe died in the subway.

Ms Blue-Clad, for example. I don’t think she died during the collapse, but suspect that she tripped and landed on the subway tracks, which is why she’s missing her shoe when we find her.

ALRIGHT SO. Earthquake happens, collapses subway and hospital. In place of the hospital, an apartment complex is built. The complex still stands but is abandoned from what we can tell. Maybe construction was never finished on it due to the hauntings. I’m inclined to believe it was completed however and that some of the ghosts were residents of the apartment complex, such as Mr Gap, the Bride, maybe more.

Maybe hauntings and murders were abnormally commonplace in the apartments, so its value dropped significantly and it didn’t survive a turbulent economy and shut down. Maybe something else happened, a fire or flood (I just haven’t seen evidence of that yet myself).

I think this timeline gives us a snapshot of the haunted territory and can give hints to the characters, who they are/were, and how they died.

Am I overthinking and spending an unnecessary amount of time theorycrafting over a silly little horror visual novel game? Yes, next question.
