DUDE YOU'RE SEEING/SAW SOPHIE AND QT???? PLEASE GIVE ME ALL THE DETAILS HOLY SHIT
Omg okay so I just got home and it’s half past two am but I love all my followers so here I present my official review/description of SOPHIE and QT’s performance at Howler in Melbourne on Wednesday 10th of February 2016:
Supporting acts were good; first one was a DJ who played some cool stuff, very bubblegum/ravey stuff, I didn’t catch all of his set. Second supporting act was this band who were using an MPK, Ableton Push, a Roland digital drum pad thing (like a korg wavedrum) and another peripheral with like knobs and pads on it (I think it was a novation product) and their stuff was pretty good, very chill. They did this cover version of that one Chet Faker and Marcus Marr song that’s on the radio at the moment.
Anyway after the second supporting act there was like another 20 minutes before SOPHIE started so I talked a little with the people standing next to me, one guy was a music reviewer and another had come down from Brisbane to catch the show as well as go to Laneway later this week.
There was one girl wearing these cool like reflective shoes who had glittery eyeshadow and she offered me some. Naturally I obliged so afterwards I was looking extra #aesthetic.
SOPHIE walks on stage with his signature red hair and was wearing this really cool like shiny PVC jacket and opened his set with this extended version of L.O.V.E. that sounded INCREDIBLE and really set the vibe at a high intensity that kept up for the entire show (which was performed using a Pioneer CDJ setup, I didn’t get a good look at it but i’d assume it was all top of the line NEXUS gear).
During the first part he played some of his well known tracks like BIPP and HARD as well as a bunch of unreleased(?) stuff that I mostly hadn’t heard before but I still really enjoyed (SOPHIE dropped in some of the unreleased track commonly known as “Higher” in there as well and it was even better hearing it live than up on the old Boiler Room recording).
After about like half an hour QT walks out and takes over the decks for the second part, she’s just as good on the decks as SOPHIE imho but she’s spinning stuff that’s more on the bubbly side - a lot of what she played had what sounded to me like very A.G. Cook-like synth runs so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d had a hand in the music she was playing - one of the tracks I knew that she spun was actually Cook’s remix of that one Charli XCX track.
After another 20 minutes or so with QT on the decks SOPHIE comes back out and is in control again, this time he goes even harder with crowd favourites like VYZEE and LEMONADE amping up the energy in the room even higher than it was before, he also dropped his remix of GFOTY’s Friday Night in there for good measure.
During this third part of the show SOPHIE also played a version of B who I want 2 B with Liz’s original demo vocals rather than the final Namie Amuro/Hatsune Miku vocals.
More towards the end of the set he played JUST LIKE WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE and MSMSMSM which were both really good and kept me dancing through.
For the encore both SOPHIE and QT came out for a live performance of HEY QT and the crowd was bouncing and jumping and yelling the lyrics back at the stage and the vibe was just so incredible and I was feeling super euphoric at the whole thing, during the song while QT was dancing SOPHIE cracked open a can of QT Energy Elixir and drank some from it which I thought was a nice touch.
IMO it was the perfect song to end such an incredible show, by this point I was feeling incredibly happy and was covered in dance lubricant. I took a few videos and photos during the show that I’ll probably upload tomorrow because as I write this sentence it’s actually much closer to 3AM.
There was also a heavy use of strobe lights during the show so if you suffer from photosensitive epilepsy you might want to avoid going and avoid watching the videos I took (I’ll put another warning under them and tag appropriately though unless anyone knows a better, more accessible solution).
Overall I give this show A million stars out of Five and would suggest if you ever have the chance to see either of these musicians live you should jump at it.
