Hugo Boss Gets Record Social Media Coverage in Fashion Week History
With a vision to shift the brand focus to a younger customer base, Hugo Boss recently showcased its second BOSS X Russell Athletic capsule collection at a baseball stadium in Milan. Needless to say, the event caused ample sensation on social media. In fact, it earned the brand record social media coverage in Fashion Week history, with 4 billion impressions in only 4 days!

Designed in a way that offers endless ‘postable ‘ moments, the event was streamed globally across all the BOSS channels. Starring beloved models like Gigi Hadid, Irina Shayk, Joan Smalls, Cindy Bruna, Alton Mason and Adut Akech, the cast was handpicked according to their Instagram or TikTok status. Moreover, athletes Alica Schmidt, Trenten Merrill and Race Imboden were also featured, along with K-pop star Big Matthew and TikToker Khaby Lame, who experienced their own runway debuts.

With a fanbase of 113 million followers on TikTok, Khaby Lame was chosen to close the show, making BOSS the first fashion brand to ever get posted on his channel. Many more social media stars, including Chiara Ferragni, Fedez, Fai Khadra, Avan Jogia and Benji Krol, shared their moments from the day.

Commenting on the unprecedented global buzz, Daniel Grieder, CEO of Hugo Boss, said, “This event is our benchmark for what we will deliver as an experience to customers around the world as of today. It underlines the great potential and global brand strength of BOSS and pays into our target to turn customers into fans. I am more than excited to further enter this journey together with the team.”

As for the TikTok campaign surrounding this event, a hashtag challenge was presented under #BossMoves, where fans had the chance to win five Boss x Russell Athletic NFT collegiate jackets, along with a twin of each design and a wearable filter. Meanwhile, the Instagram campaign provided engaging content, wherein nine individual reels, IGTVs, feeds and story posts were created in real time, generating exponential engagement before, during and after the event. In addition, fourteen content creators showed off their outfits through Instagram reels, including Khaby Lame, Alica Schmidt, The Elevator Boys, Futuristix and Olivia LVS and Eva Apio.

“In August, we presented our new strategy together with our vision, to become the leading premium tech-driven fashion platform worldwide. Only six weeks later, we are proving that we are more than ready to take this place in the fashion industry in the future,” Grieder added.

"Is TikTok Making Your Experiment with food More? We bet so!"
How many times have you fancied an easy, delicious, and quick recipe or craved an easy-to-make midnight snack? How many hours have most of us spent annoying scrolling to get to a recipe on personal food blogs? How many of us benefited from the restaurant reviews offered by foodies?

Food is visually stimulating, and something everyone can get creative with at home. Our social feeds are full of outdoor dining showcasing mouth-watering food, recipes, and exciting new ingredients. TikTok has marked itself as one of the biggest social media platforms in the world in just a couple of years. With more than 1 billion users worldwide, it has captured the interest of almost every industry out there with its popularity, presence, and influence. The platform is simply a home for foodies, whether you are a food blogger, chef, or restaurant owner you can show off your creations quickly and creatively.
Well, if you want to learn how to make homemade luncheon, the five-minute microwave-baked cake, the trendy feta pasta, or even sunny-side-up eggs, TikTok is the platform for you. Furthermore, if you want a great restaurant recommendation or quick food reviews, the application is awash with restaurant reviews and foodie blogs praising the latest hot restaurant or condemning it.

TikTok is a convenient tool for foodies to share old recipes, recreate them, or learn new ones. Ranging between short-segment videos, and most recently longer ones, setting the stage for even more storytelling, entertainment and giving the global community the space to film and edit videos up to three minutes. The platform is changing the way people are using videos, presenting its users with a variety of cooking challenges and mouth-watering ideas to try in the kitchen.

The application is becoming a pipeline of future talent, Nutritionists, like Coach.sama and Sarahskitchen are leading TikTok’s cooking and diet trend with health and fitness-focused recipes. Chefs doing what they do best, like muhammedhazem sharing his secret ingredients, Ramysoli with his eye-catchy food trays, Salmathechef and her old but gold recipes, lastly Alythecook and Cozy kitchen by Paky with their quick and easy recipes. Food reviewers like Amr El Hady, Adany’s Table, and Yasser Dabees are giving their followers the ultimate experience with honest reviews and recommendations for a big variety of restaurants. Other TikTok content creators with cooking talents and skills dived right into the cooking race showing their cooking hacks and tips. With detailed ingredient lists displayed to the side of the screen, hype music, and step-by-step tutorials, these videos appeal to both their younger and older audience.

Food videos are amongst the most popular on TikTok, #Recipe has taken over the platform with a whopping 25B, while #Healthyrecipes earned 3.8B views. TikTok food challenges and trends also tend to gain popularity quickly, like #BakedFetaPasta challenge, with more than 146.1M views, is as simple as it gets and it looks pretty delicious, likewise, #PastaChips challenge, as weird as it sounds, people are making crisps from pasta.
Many food personalities started on TikTok in their early careers and ended up as top-notch food ambassadors who turned their passion into a career. The platform stands as an outstanding creative space where everyone can quickly and easily express themselves and their passions through shared content. Putting the time in and ensuring quality videos can pay off, many people use the platform immensely to their advantage, with quick and snappy videos, you can attract users’ attention and increase engagement; gaining TikTok fame and subsequently making their names known in the industry creating many career and out-app opportunities.

GloWish by Huda Beauty Luminous Pressed Powder Is the New Revolt
Introducing a breathable, micro-fine pressed powder for instant radiance that leaves skin looking lit-from-within.
“As my complexion has improved by using WISHFUL skincare products, my beauty bag needs have changed, so I’ve designed a lightweight pressed powder that not only creates a smooth base, but lets skin breathe with a flawless, radiant glow, minus the cake face.”
– Huda Kattan
The Formula
While face powders often get a bad rep for being dehydrating, drying, and leaving you with a one-dimensional chalky complexion, GloWish by Huda Beauty is changing the game by introducing Luminous Pressed Powder. The silky, breathable, and micro-fine pressed powder leaves you with flawless, radiant, and natural-looking skin without the dreaded, dry-looking complexion so often left by powders. Armed with an optimal balance of pearls and pigments that leave a blurring, smoothing effect, and infused with a concoction of good-for-you skincare ingredients, the silky and comfy powder blends like smooth, second skin and breaks all the rules, leaving a lit-from-within next-level glow.

The magic behind the new fairy dust is the fact that GloWish is committed to designing products that combine well for skin ingredients with beauty-blasting functionalities. The non-drying formula is infused with 80 percent naturally derived ingredients including Damascus Rose Oil, Vitamin E, and Red Bell Pepper Extract, meaning the glow-bestowing powder leaves you with a silky veil that looks like your own, natural skin and lasts all day.
Another major bonus? This formula works beautifully on both bare skin and top of your fave foundation formula. Huda loves to swirl a damp makeup sponge in the powder before applying it to bare skin to immediately blur, smooth, and even her skin. For full glam days, Huda applies it on top of her #FauxFilter foundations with a brush to add an immediate glow-boost that sets and blurs for all-day glowing skin. It’s also ideal for setting in place the GloWish MultiDew Skin Tint without diminishing the formula’s glowing finish.
The Inspiration
GloWish was born out of Huda Kattan’s evolution towards celebrating more natural-looking beauty codes. With the inception of WISHFUL – Huda’s skincare line launched in 2020 – the global beauty entrepreneur found that her skin was brighter, smoother, and better than ever before, and she wanted makeup must-haves that would enhance and celebrate her natural glow, not work to hide it. As a result, GloWish by Huda Beauty was born earlier this year, and Huda continues to build an edited range of beauty icons that enhance and celebrate the skin’s natural glow while also working to enrich and improve skin.
Wanting an alternative to her signature cake face, Huda decided to design a lightweight, breathable Luminous Pressed Powder – a formula she had always been looking for but never found. The result is a formula that gives a natural-looking, luminous finish while also allowing her to achieve different levels of coverage depending on her mood and the tool she uses.
To match the GloWish MultiDew shades, the powder is available in 13 shades from Fair to Extra Rich, all built with a neutral undertone so that each shade is unique yet stretchable and can flatter multiple skin tones. GloWish Luminous Pressed Powder is Vegan Society certified and not tested on animals. The compact is also packaged in a recyclable uncoated FSC certified paper box, meaning you can get your glow on without the guilt.
The Brush:

To coincide with the launch of Luminous Pressed Powder also comes the latest beauty tool in GloWish’s sustainable brush collection, the Face | All Over Powder Brush. Designed to diffuse powder beautifully and evenly across the face without settling product into pores. The eco-friendly domed brush is made with synthetic, 100 percent vegan bristles and has a handle made of PLA Biodegradable, all housed in a travel-friendly, reusable pouch.
While the new tool was designed with Luminous Pressed Powder in mind, the versatile brush can be used with any powder to build your desired coverage. Swirl the brush in your powder to pick up the product and apply it to the face in outward strokes. Use once to sweep a sheer soft veil of color for a natural-looking finish, or if you want fuller coverage, repeat and watch your coverage and luminosity subtly build until you’ve got your perfect glow well and truly on.
The Ingredients:
Damascus Rose Oil
Drawn from petals where the oil provides a high level of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, Damascus Rose Oil (the same oil used in WISHFUL’s Get Even Rose Oil) works to soothe skin, clarify the complexion, and lock in extreme moisture as well as leaving a deliciously dreamy scent.
Red Bell Pepper
Extracted through a cold-press process where 100 percent of its vitamins, enzymes, and nutrients are fully preserved, the powerful red bell pepper extract is known for its defense against the effects of digital pollution, including blue light emitted from urban technology which can cause aging, dark spots and sleep deprivation. Furthermore, GloWish helps to reduce waste by using ‘ugly’ peppers unwanted for consumer consumption but are still a valuable source of the active ingredient.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E has been a key ingredient in skincare for over 50 years and is a powerful antioxidant that protects skin from free radicals while also having super conditioning and soothing properties.
Huda’s How To + Hacks:
youtube
Bare Skin glow-up: Use a damp makeup sponge to press the formula onto bare skin for an instant glow, beautiful light coverage, and an immediate pore-blurring finish.
Set + Glow: Use it on top of your fave foundation or our MultiDew Skin Tint, to set, blur and boost luminosity.

Cats of Egypt x Khoyout Troupe: In the Love of Our Furry - Cunning- Friends
By: Mayar S.Mosaad

Photo credits: Sarah Ibrahim El Raghy
An enchanting clash of contemporary visual arts and the pure love for cats came to Dawar Arts, the independent cultural organization based in Cairo. The event took place earlier this month, held by Cats of Egypt, the fun-spirited platform that has been the voice of cats and pets since 2019. Cats of Egypt joined forces with Khoyout Troupe to create an interactive theatre night.
Four free-spirited actors, an emotionally intelligent host, and a tone-setter actor with a xylophone. Together they made Khoyout Troupe, a group of improvisational actors who have gained fame among the contemporary art connoisseurs in Egypt for the past five years. They bring to life unscripted dramatic performances generated spontaneously by the actors right after they hear stories from the audience in a heart-warming, and sometimes brutally honest, act.
The lovers of Cats of Egypt narrated their stories with their furry friends and the Troupe, sometimes had us in tears of laughter, other times in tears of grief, but always captivated.
1- Ahmed’s Jealous Cat: Samir Abou El Kheir

Photo credits: Sarah Ibrahim El Raghy
Ahmed, a writer for Cats of Egypt and a defender of the furry community, has a problem at home; his wife and his cat have a love-hate relationship. Unfortunately, Samir Abou El Kheir could not handle competition, wanting Ahmed’s undivided attention for himself, and would not accept a ‘rival’ aka. Amira, in his territory. Amira, on her part, does not like pets and not cats. Luckily, Ahmed tells us that Samir, with a character as unique as his name, somehow won over Amira’s heart, and now they are a happy family of 3, with the parents proud of their furry son who cannot keep his tiny paws off the sofas.
2- Dalia & Madad: A Journey Towards Healing

Photo credits: Sarah Ibrahim El Raghy
For those of you who do not know Madad (مَدَد) in Arabic means assistance, aid, and relief; no name could have been more accurate to describe what Madad has brought into Dalia’s life. Dalia Adel has spent a year with Madad, during which she got sick with continuous indescribable pain in the chest. To her surprise, the more she got sick, Madad got even sicker. Vets assured her that nothing was wrong with her furry friend. She was shaken to the core when an animal communicator told her that poor little Madad felt helpless and the only way he could give her his support was to be equally sick. Dalia told Khoyout Troupe that Madad had another gift; at times when she could not describe what or where is hurting her, he would sneak onto her chest, hit slightly right where it hurts, giving her fractions of a second of relief; as if warning her about her health condition. Later, she finds out he was hinting at a Thyroid gland disease. Thanks to her guardian angel, Dalia is now healthy, happy, and grateful for the heaven-sent Madad. The night was a great reminder that giving a voice for the voiceless is the nobility of our humankind, that love is beyond our apprehension. We encourage you to check the online platforms of Cats of Egypt & Khoyout Troupe but be alarmed to be enchanted.

Coach’s Fall Campaign: With Friends
Starring none other than the world-renowned acting stars Jennifer Lopez and Michael B. Jordan, alongside Japanese model and songwriter Kōki and American pro basketball player Jeremy Lin, Coach’s fall campaign is everything we wished for this season. This year, the campaign shots were captured by Renell Medrano, highlighting the special moments when joy sneaks up on us in a rare way when we are only around our friends or spending time with our community.

Reflecting on the concept of this campaign, Lopez said, “When you’re with friends, possibilities are endless. When I’m with my friends, we don’t always know what will happen next. We’re just hanging out and taking it as it comes. Just knowing that people are out there and they’re doing things, it’s encouraging; it’s optimistic, and it’s spontaneous.”
The collection, as expected, doesn’t disappoint. Firstly, you can spot the brand’s latest bag designs – Tate and Soft Tabby, along with the Hitch Backpack and the exceptional comeback of the signature Rogue bag that we all deem rather iconic. You will also find a rich range of plush shearling coats and leather jackets, which were created in collaboration with the classic American outerwear brand Schott.

Describing his artistic vision for this fall season, Creative Director Stuart Vevers explained,“The Fall collection is inspired by our present and our future, by what we’ve learned and where we are going. It’s a story about friendship and the way our loved ones inspire, support and shape us, and the excitement we feel about spending time together again. Comforting, nostalgic and tactile, it celebrates the sense of possibility and joy found in connection.”
The theme for the set of this campaign was to capture outdoor intimate parties and neighborhood get-togethers, capturing real existent communities in action. On that note, the campaign even features the Afro-Cuban jazz band Miguel Cruz and Sugarcane, the flavorful Tokyo-based band Gliiico, and interestingly enough, Miami’s jump-rope team The Hurricane Jumpers. More of the extended cast also includes Jeremy Lin’s closest friends from college, Kheaton Scott and Nathan Liu, and some students from Coach’s Dream It Real initiative.

Jordan’s take on this sentimental theme, we found, was rather inspiring. “The idea of being amongst friends means being around people you’re comfortable with. People you can be yourself with, grow with, be creative with. It’s about being in an environment that makes you comfortable, where you can be authentic and thrive,” he said.

How to Incorporate Fitness in Your Daily Routine
It’s about time we begin talking about fitness again. I don’t know about you but I sat around on a couch at home for months last year and by the time we were all re-engaging society again, my excuses sounded something like this – “It was a rough year so I’m taking things slow” or “It’s finally summer and I have to spend all my time lying on a beach somewhere.” If you relate to this, this article is for you. Here are a few simple ways we can begin approaching fitness again.
Walk whenever you get the chance
I’ve been doing this thing where I, on purpose, park five minutes away from whichever venue I’m heading toward so that I have to walk from and back to the car. If you have a free hour during the morning or afternoon, you could also walk around your neighborhood while vibing to your favorite music or reflecting on recent life decisions, whatever floats your boat. If you’re planning to catch up with a friend, instead of going to coffee or sharing a meal, you can invite them to walk around with you for a bit. Lastly, if you have the option to skip the elevator and take the stairs, convince yourself to do the latter.
Take five or ten minutes in the morning to stretch
This will energize your body at the beginning of the day, so that you naturally become more inclined to move around or stand up rather than sit all day. It is also very beneficial to your mental health as it allows you to connect with your body and helps you become present and kick off your day with a fresh start.
Discover types of exercise that you enjoy
That could be ballet, pilates or cardio, among many types to choose from. Feel free to try and figure out what you enjoy the most and then make time for it weekly, if not, twice or three times a week. If you’re the type to get bored with routines easily, you can invite friends to join you to make this time more entertaining.
Physical weekend activities
I know many of us will be tempted to skip this step but here it is anyway. Consider doing fun activities with your friends, such as Paddle Tennis, squash, swimming and horseback riding.
Less screen time
We all know that the more time we spend watching television, scrolling through Instagram on our phones and watching movies on a laptop, the more likely we are to spend hours sitting still or lying on a bed. The less screen time in our day, the more likely we are to engage in more meaningful activities that contribute to our physical well being.

Rita Ora Performs at the Eiffel Tower
It is no secret that the beloved English singer, songwriter and actress Rita Ora is always hopping from one cool thing to another. Just recently, Ora held an exclusive live performance with a breath-taking picturesque backdrop of the Eiffel Tower. In collaboration with Melrose Media, this performance is the first of a music series, called Iconic People in Iconic Places, taking place during the finale of Paris Fashion Week.
Aside from the exceptional setting, what is very special about this performance is that it marks the singer’s shift back to performing live music in front of a live audience. This time, the iconic landmark is also captured in a way that we’ve never seen before, as Ora performs from the top of the tower, while featuring custom looks – exclusively designed for her – from Fendi, Miu Miu, Lanvin and Alexandre Vauthier.
It is no wonder that Ora described the event as “a memorable performance and a real ‘pinch me’ moment for me. Performing at such a legendary venue is an honor, and to be wearing custom looks from [these brands] is simply a dream.” As for Rita’s gorgeous makeup looks, we have Lancôme to thank for that. We love how they effortlessly merged conventional themes of Parisian beauty with the singer’s unique, personal flair.
Performing her global hits ‘Anywhere’, ‘Lonely Together’ and ‘Let You Love Me’, and more songs from her latest EP ‘Bang’, Ora took her audience on a tour of some of her past milestones and present moments of her career. Did we mention that the performance was also broadcasted worldwide? It was made available on various streaming platforms, including platforms including Apple TV and Roku. Additionally, ten percent of all proceeds from this performance went towards Soccer Aid for UNICEF.
From Melrose Media, Manuel Molina commented, “We can’t think of a better way to kick-off this exciting new music series.” And Amos Rozenberg added, “We wanted to launch a new form of entertainment. A live star concert filmed in an iconic venue, broadcasted during Fashion Week. A mix between a payperview, a SVOD and VOD show, a TV sponsored concert with strong fan engagement.”
Hosted by Melrose Media, the performance was directed by Beki Mari and produced by Paramax Films and Swisskiss in association with 24/7. As for the brains behind the creative ad campaign, Interruption made it all come to life.

Kate del Castillo’s Fashion Debut
Known around the globe as one of Mexico’s star actresses, Kate del Castillo has recently ventured down a new path, as she announced the launch of her very own casual clothing line. The collection, which we’re huge fans of, was created in collaboration with C’est Toi, the edgy LA-based fashion brand, specifically known for its exceptional quality when it comes to anything denim.
Just released on August 24th, the KDC x C’est Toi capsule collection features an amazing variety of lifestyle pieces, made for the woman who likes to embrace her femininity without having to discredit the value of comfort. Speaking on the creative process, Castillo said, “The idea for the line started with the desire to create a collection for women just like me. I know what I like and I don’t compromise on comfort. I need looks that can carry me from day to night during my busiest days but that can also make me feel and look great when lounging at home.”
While creating the pieces in this collection, Castillo kept in mind the contemporary state of fashion, as she even recognized the impact of the pandemic on people’s daily fashion choices. Many of us have naturally drifted away from the ‘perfect daily glam’ look to adjust to more of a stay-at-home lifestyle. With this change in mind, Castillo designed versatile pieces that were both comfortable enough to lounge around in at home and stylish enough to wear on a fun night out.
From fashion-forward jumpsuits and denim overalls to trendy jackets and loungewear, the collection is mostly made of premium fabrics of cotton and denim in order to ensure that each piece is light and comfy. Our personal favorite pieces include the Tencel Jumpsuit in white, the Casual Button Down Jacket in black and the Acid Washed Denim Jacket in orange.
Joining forces with Authentic Vision, the line will also be taking on a futuristic approach by using product authentication technology, which features a unique holographic fingerprint tag, so that you can actually verify brand authenticity with any type of smartphone via the ‘CheckIfReal’ app. Through this method, you can also get access to more product information.
To explore the pieces of the KDC x C’est Toi, make sure to visit KDCshop.com.

7 Things to Stop If You Want A Healthy Relationship
Stop Denying Other People’s Emotions & Validate Them

Emotional invalidation is excruciatingly unpleasant. It might be accidental at times, but it is a symptom of psychological abuse when done frequently and purposefully. Your sentiments are as important as your partner’s. Emotions play a crucial function and should not be overlooked.
Stop Trying to Make Them Think/Behave Like You

People should not have to be precisely like you on each aspect as long as they respect your concerns. It’s not desirable, and it’s not always doable.
Stop Trying to Avoid Conflict

Issues will never improve if the other person is oblivious of the situation.
Stop Attempting to Win Fights

Rather than dwelling upon who is good and who is bad, look for alternatives. The purpose is to connect, not to compete.
Stop Expecting Others to Read Your Mind

People may not realize what you require since you have not communicated your requirements to them. Being honest about your wants helps to avoid misunderstanding.
Stop Expecting One Individual to Satisfy All of Your Expectations

Nobody can be everything to you on their own. You require community care, which entails locating others to support you in a variety of ways.
Stop Expecting People to Value Your Limits While Failing to Respect Theirs

Boundaries are a healthy aspect of any relationship.

6 Ideas for Creating Community
Many of us have had our fair share of getting used to people approaching us first and inviting us out. The same people seem to complain about lacking the presence of a strong community. In many cases, we’ve forgotten how to initiate and host people well. We don’t even know where to begin if we wanted to plan a space for people to bond and connect more. But if you had a few pointers, why not start with you? Here are five ideas on how to build community.
Cook a meal together.
The strongest bonds are created over a common appreciation for food, and that’s a fact – at least likely. Instead of simply ordering pizza or planning the traditional “dish party”, wouldn’t it be more interesting if you cooked with your friends a meal from scratch? I realize that’s a challenge for some but I think the challenge, in itself, could make your time more enjoyable.
Plan a day trip.
Instead of asking people to commit to days of travel and in order to avoid the hassle. All the while, make sure you make the most of your road trip with your favorite playlists and snacks. Bring along a polaroid camera to capture special memories from the day.
Try out fun classes
Find out what your hobbies are and make time for them by joining a new class or a book club, for example. It’s a great way to meet new people who share your interests. You will probably hit it off, as you bond over something you both like.
Host a themed night.
Whether your friends are into movie marathons, painting or getting competitive over games, you can invite them over and plan all the details ahead of time to make it more memorable than your average hangout. The key is to be intentional and enjoy each other’s company.
Invite people to your normal everyday activities
If you’re walking your pet, going to the gym, stopping for a coffee break or going on an icecream run in the middle of the day, you can always text a friend to join you. It is no secret that quality one-on-one time is also instrumental in building a healthy community.
Come up with seasonal activities.
During Christmas, for example, you can plan to go to concerts or the opera with your friends. In spring, there are book festivals and various outdoor events.

How to Let Go of What You Can’t Control
Can you think of a time when you held onto something for too long until it stopped working or lost all meaning? Or you kept worrying about this one concern for months and things ended up working out in a much smoother way than you anticipated? Sometimes, we can be like this, because a part of us wants everything to happen our way. We also then stress about the real possibility of things not going our way. It’s a lose-lose situation.
And please hear me when I say this… We’re not trying to say that you should give up because you have zero control over what happens in your life. In fact, we want to declare the opposite. Here are some keys for learning how to take charge of what you can control and how to let go of what you can’t control.
Figure out what you can control
While you don’t have control over the weather, for example, or how people act and what they say, you have control over what you do and say. Build and work on your own healthy mindset before you start complaining about others, which brings me to my next point…
Don’t blame others for your problems
Taking responsibility for what your life looks like is so important. It’s true that mistreatment affects various aspects of our lives, however, our reaction to them is way more powerful. Reject the victim mentality and embrace the influence of good mindsets on your life.
Trust that you’re going to be okay
Sometimes, we are so attached to someone/something that we subconsciously think we won’t be able to survive without them. This brings about a real fear of letting go. The truth is that you can and will survive. Not only will you survive, but you will thrive as you begin to make the most of what you can control.
Learn the lesson and move on
We are meant to learn something new with every experience and season we go through. Take notes from the past but look forward as you move on with the new tools you have now added to your belt.
Embrace healthy affirmations
Last but most definitely not least, do not underestimate the power of self talk. If you’re not familiar with the concept, start by getting a pen and journal and writing down what you want to think/tell yourself when you experience moments of fear or self-doubt. Will you let them overpower you or will you learn how deal with them head on?

A Talk With Egyptian Soprano Laura Mekhail
We recently had a one-on-one talk with the first Arab musician to be awarded the Bocelli-Jameel Scholarship at the Royal College of Music in London, and she happens to be Egyptian. Laura Mekhail is not only a talented passionate singer, she was a singing teacher at Chesterbrook Academy for six years before she decided to become a professional soloist. We became keen to learn more about her story…
When did you first discover your passion for singing?
I’ve been singing in my church choir since I was a girl. As I grew up, I started maturing. Then when I was in high school, we had this really tough piece in our choir and they chose me to sing it. It was meant for a high soprano. But I managed. That’s when I said to myself, “Ok! I can do more than this being just a talent.” Then I started looking for schools to actually study singing – classical singing in particular. That’s how it all started. I started looking for schools but there were none here in Egypt, so I looked abroad and then found a school in West Virginia; that’s where I went.
How did you decide to pursue a career in this field?
When I got to West Virginia, Wesleyan College, my professor, Mandy Spievak was amazing. Actually, she’s the one who encouraged me most. She’s the one who actually made me feel more than simply my talent, but that I can do way more, that I could make this my profession. She helped me trust myself and become a much better singer. She taught me a lot and that’s how I realised that I wanted to pursue singing as a career. After my graduation, I just went from there.
What kind of singer would you classify yourself as?
I can actually sing other genres. I can sing pop, jazz and Arabic. However, I do classify myself as a coloratura soprano singer. That’s where my passion is. That’s what I want to become – a professional classical soprano singer.
If you had to pick, what has been your favourite performance so far?
One of my best performances was when I was invited to sing at the New Ramses College graduation. I chose to sing the song I Believe by Andrea Bocelli and Catherine Jenkins. It was one of the most enjoyable performances I’ve ever experienced.
How does it feel to be the first Arab musician awarded the Andrea Bocelli Foundation –Community Jameel Scholarship?
At first, I was super excited. I just kept jumping up and down. I was like, “Oh my God! Is this really happening to me?” At the time, I didn’t say to myself, “Oh wow, I’m the first Arab to receive the scholarship,” but then it hit me! This is a huge responsibility. I am holding the names of two big entities and they will be with me forever. I have a responsibility towards these people. I have a responsibility towards my country. I need to give one hundred percent of myself.” I actually keep thinking, I have a lot ahead of me to prove and to accomplish.
I have been following the work of Community Jameel for some time now, and I can say that they have been investing in the future of education; with growing challenges, particularly as the pandemic has taken over the world, scholarships such as Andrea Bocelli Foundation–Community Jameel Scholarship, are essential in supporting the work of creatives, individuals and industries affected. I am so grateful to have this opportunity to study at one of the world’s greatest conservatoires, especially at a time when support for the arts is needed more than ever before.
Now that you have the chance to learn at a top league conservatory, what are your expectations going in?
I’ve come to realise the unique opportunity afforded to me by not only studying at the Royal College of Music, a world-renowned conservatory but also being a Bocelli-Jameel scholar. I believe that it will open many doors for me. I plan to seize every opportunity that comes my way and become the best that I can be.
If you were to share advice with aspiring musicians, what would you say are the main keys that really shaped your career as a singer?
I would say that, especially as a musician, it’s really hard to become a professional. You need a lot of persistence to achieve your dream and you can never let it go. You have to just keep pursuing what you want to be. You need to overcome every challenge that comes your way and never, never let go of your dream until you achieve it.
