080 Barcelona Fashion - 7th Edition.

It was a cloudy Monday morning, 31st of January of 2011, and the Barceloneta was ready to welcome designers from all over for the seventh edition of the 080 Barcelona Fashion week. Three days ahead of independent fashion were about to begin. The World Race carp, shaped as a gigantic white plastic earthworm, at the end of Passeig de Joan de Borbó was the selected location for this edition where eighteen designers presented their creations for the next F/W 2011.

The first one to open the 080 Barcelona Fashion 7th edition was Juan Antonio Avalos, a Spanish menswear promising designer. His collection for next fall, called “CONSTRUCTIVISM FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE”, was inspired on the Russian military uniforms mixed with space and futuristic materials. To add a tiny bit of communication revolution, one of the models had a phone with him, which he used to constantly take pictures from the other models and the public.

Then Montse Liarte’s “FRACTAL” collection took part of the catwalk, becoming pink and black as the main 2011 fall’s colors for women.

Following her, the designer Brain & Beast presented his collection focused on the north European market for both, men and women.

Karlotalaspalas also played a role on this first day with her collection “TIME” where she expressed the longevity of time since birth until death by focusing on metals and the effect the oxide produces: copper, bronze and steel.

And to conclude the first journey of 080 Barcelona Fashion 2011 the female designer born in Mongolia and settled in Paris, Tsolo Munkh, showed her oriental ghosts and demons inspired fall collection. 

So the first day was concluded, and two more and exciting ones were waiting for time to run.

In the next days we had the pleasure to view designers like Justicia Ruano 9pm, Miquel Suay, Miriam Ponsa, Josep Abril, Txell Miras, Cardona Bonache, Juun.J, Krizia Robustella, Omar Kashoura, Celia Vela, Schipper/Arques, Manuel Bolaño and Yiorgos Elephtheriades. They all brought many different inspirations to the next Fall/Winter 2011 collections.

Juun.J, a designer from Seoul, showed his collection “OVERLAY” the second day converting menswear into a classic and elegant dandy type of fashion. He mixed fabrics and layouts creating a modern and trendy kind of man who believes beauty, gentility and classic can come together by introducing capes, trench coats and mono tones to the male gender.

Another worth mentioning designer of the menswear collections showed at the 080 seventh edition was Omar Kashoura. This Arabic/English designer really showed his skills at the catwalk to represent the ‘Kashoura man’, a man who enjoys the relaxed elegance of the city. But this time he focused on the actual global economic crisis by naming the collection “Army of Elegance” which was created to confront the nowadays-daily life of the citizens. In the collection showed it was all about the elegant and urban gentleman adapted to the rhythm of the 21st century with accessories as the key element.

At last, we got to see the last edition’s winner Manuel Bolaño, who showed a collection inspired on the forest, trees and the soul of the birds with black and brown as the main colors. He, once more, positively surprised everyone with the superposition of fabric layouts, extreme volumes and the use of feathers to expose the woman as a figure of hardness and pessimism.

The last day was the day to chose the winner, the moment for the jury to decide which one of the designers deserved the so clamed prize. It couldn’t be Manuel Bolaño, since he had been the winner in the sixth edition, so an opportunity for a new designer had arrived. The jury finally decided that Krizia Robustella, self-defined as “Sport Deluxe”, had deserved the prize to the best women and menswear award with her “Club Road Driver’s” collection inspired on the USA’s road clubs. It is said that the eighth edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion will be the last one and that there is no guarantee that the event will continue due to political decisions. If it is the case, we should enjoy what we’ve got left of this independent and alternative fashion event that 080 Barcelona Fashion is.
