The most recent episode of The Last of Us on @hbomax was an absolute treat for anyone who loves malls. I said “wowwwwwww” with childlike wonder when they first revealed what the mall looked like 🤩😍

Shot in the now defunct Northland Village Mall in Calgary, the show recreated 20-25 storefronts, and made the mall look like it had been sealed off and forgotten. The second level, though? All visual effects, because Northland Village Mall never had a second level.

The mall’s merry-go-round was leased from Spruce Meadows after they acquired it from Chinook Mall in 2018. The mirrors were added in the middle to cover location-specific art on the carousel, and to add to the warped, dystopian setting.

Updates included the removal of existing fountains and seating.
