Snowshoe Flat Tire Trip Saturday October 14th + Sunday October 15th

Join us for closing weekend at Snowshoe. Shop will be closed Saturday 10/13 so we can go ride bicycles...sorry. Rain or shine we will be there! The shop will resume normal business hours on Tuesday 16th at 11am. Come shred the gnar with us, see you on the lifts!

Adventure Night Ride Friday October 19th 7pm to 9pm

We work with Synchrony Financial in order to offer you the best buying option. We are able to extend 6 month financing.

What do you need to apply? A photo ID and some sort of debit or credit card. The application takes minutes. You may have a cosigner.

How to Trade in a Bike at Flat Tire Co.

Flat Tire Co. accepts models 2010 or newer as trade ins. We work with bicyclebluebook.com to provide a value. As a consumer you may also utilize this site to find the value of your bicycle if you prefer to try and sell it yourself on a local marketplace. The value provided to us at the bike shop will be different than the value provided to you. Bottom line yes you can trade in your bike. No we are not going to be able to give you as much money as if you sell it yourself since its getting resold by a 3rd party.

Events in September

Enduro Group Ride from Seven Springs - Tuesday September 11th

One of our sponsored riders, Kohl Aumer, will be helping us lead an Enduro/All Mountain Group Ride from Springs. This is not a ride that includes the lifts we are riding the single track trails. We will meet at the North Face Lot starting at 4:30pm. Ride will leave by 5pm, be sure to pack lights, snacks, water. Plan for around 3 hours of riding. Come shred the gnar with us!

Pedal for Pints: Adventure Night Ride - Saturday September 15th

Meet at the shop. Leave at 6pm. What do you need you ask? We recommend a bicycle with knobby tires mountain or cx, night light, helmet, and sense of adventure. Plan to ride around 2 hours, beers to follow!

Bikes & Brews Parking Lot Jam, part of Greensburg Craft Beer Week - Friday September 28th

As part of Greensburg Craft Beer Week we will be hosting a fun event tailored for all ages. This is a free thing stop by for a beverage and listen to some jams. We will do a group ride to the 5 star trail, have a free little kids race, and FREE YOGA.

Matt Tinkey, MS, ATC of UPMC Sports Medicine and Mike Schultz, CSCS of Highland Training bring a combined 20 plus years’ experience in the field, working with a wide range of athletes from regional talent to national elites. Matt will start the night off talking bike fit, showing examples, and discussing a range of things from bio-mechanics to saddle height. Mike will then transition into endurance training for the second half and dive into heart rate/power info, along with many other subjects from program design to real world application. We will then finish with a Q&A and post talk questions. Shop beers to follow.

Zwift v. Trainer Road.

Winter.  The season of choices for the cyclist in western Pennsylvania.  For those without the inspiration to ride in sub-zero temperatures and snow, you can only look forward to time on the dreaded trainer to maintain that summer fitness.  Fortunately, with the advent of smart trainers (forthcoming review of the Cycleops Hammer), the indoor cycling world can keep you motivated and inspired all winter long.  The leading two interactive smart trainer services today are Zwift and TrainerRoad.  Both services use a smart trainer’s ability to have software controlled resistance. So which service is right for you?

Zwift

Cost: $15/month after 7-day free trial.

Pros: Immersive, fun, engaging environment.  Includes free “events” which can range from structured workouts to race against users around the globe.

Cons: Included workouts and training do not provide extensive structure.

The selling point for Zwift is it is essentially is a massive online, trainer, videogame.  All users ride in the same virtual world.  A smart trainer adjusts resistance levels to match the terrain that your virtual avatar is on.  So, if you start going up a virtual climb, it really feels like you are climbing.  The virtual setting rotates amongst different maps every few days.  Currently, the Zwift maps include ��Watopia” (a fictional place based on an island), a replica of London, and a replica of Richmond, Virginia. In addition to actual riding, Zwift even provides you the opportunity to custom your avatar’s ride, kit, and look.

As noted above, Zwift is a massive online videogame.  The program offers numerous daily races broken into numerous categories which can put you up against someone from halfway around the globe.  In addition, there are tons of organized events, from training ride to ride-alongs with professional cyclists.  

If you strive for more programmatic training, Zwift also offers a range of workout modes ranging from full winter training plans to four week power boosters.  You can also make your own workout using the Zwift workout builder or by importing a file from Trainingpeaks.  Out of all the functionality in Zwift, structured training is probably lacking the most.  However, this only affects the small segment of dedicated cyclists who are sticking to a training plan for next year’s podium aspirations.

Zwift is operated using a smartphone, tablet, or computer software.  Pretty much anything bought within the past five years is compatible. If you are using a tablet or computer to run Zwift, you can also use a companion smartphone application as a heads-up display or to interface with other cyclists.  The application also lets you browse and join events.  If you are interested in Zwift stop in to Flat Tire Co. during normal business hours to try it out.

TrainerRoad

Cost: $12/month or $99/year (if not 100% satisfied, get a full refund within the first 30 days)

Pros: Extensive training plans and workouts for aspiring cyclist and triathletes, “virtual power”, structured training environment.

Cons: Does not provide an immersive, competitive atmosphere.

TrainerRoad provides really well structured training plans and workouts to improve fitness whether you are an endurance road cyclist, a cross-country mountain biker, or a triathlete. The software accomplishes this using power based training whether you use a power meter or a speed sensor to provide “Virtual Power”.  In addition, the program will control a smart trainer for you.

  TrainerRoad uses a very simple interface to display all the metrics you can want to track your efforts during a workout.  Workouts are displayed as a simple blue graph which is then overlaid with a yellow line depicting your actual performance.  To supplement the workout, motivational text and form drills are provided on-screen to break up the monotony.  The creators of TrainerRoad admit that working out to just a graph showing your workout is mind-numbing and encourage user to take the time to watch their favorite TV show or listen to music.  

By far, the appeal of TrainerRoad is the library of training plans and workouts.  TrainerRoad is home to a massive library of over 100 structured training plans and over 1,000 workouts.  So whether you are looking to improve your sprint for a local criterium or your endurance for a trip from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. on a rail trail, there will be a training plan or workout for you.  

First time TrainerRoad users will need to complete a dreaded function threshold power (FTP) test (unless you know it already) to benchmark the basis for all of your workouts. TrainerRoad offers a survey to get your started and to stir you to the right training plan.

TrainerRoad does not over the immersive experience of Zwift’s virtual world and potential users should recognize this ahead of time.  While Zwift is fun, it is easy to fall into the trap or just aimlessly riding around the virtual world without purpose.  If you seek purpose and have goals for the 2018 season, TrainerRoad may be the choice for you.  

Conclusion

Zwift and TrainerRoad offer two very different experiences.  If you prefer an unstructured, fun, immersive environment, stop by Flat Tire Co. and try out Zwift and check out available smart trainers to get you going.  However, if you value purpose in your training and are seeking structure for your rides, TrainerRoad may offer the solution you are looking for. Ultimately, the choice comes down to your personal preference.  Either way, both options in combination with a smart trainer from Flat Tire Co. can make this year’s winter your most production winter training season ever.

What is cyclocross you say? It’s where a whole bunch of grown ass people ride their bike in spandex in circles in the grass and try to make it over some obstacles. While others ride you heckle them. You don’t have to wear spandex. You do have to ride in a circle and wear a helmet. You should sign up. It is only $25 and the proceeds benefit our very nice venues. Get some exercise and come try it! KEYSTONE CROSS - NOV 11

Join us for Keystone Cross hosted at Keystone State Park in Derry, Pa. Registration will be only $10 for all classes, $5 for an extra race. All proceeds go towards the park. We are working to get new sand for the beach, picninc tables, and start getting some mountain bike trails going!! This is not a USA Cycling sanctioned event. Categories are recomended below via skill set. You are welcome to race multiple races or any category. Don't be a sandbagger. There will be some bathrooms. There is also a great pavillion for heckling and handups during the race. Bring your cross or mountain bike and lets get dirty! Registration: Opens 9:00am $10 for single race. $5 for an additional race. (i.e. race at both 11pm &12pm) At registration you will sign your liability waiver and get a number. Timing will be done manually. Categories may be modified if we get an over abundance of people.
