⋯ RAISING AN EYEBROW, JOSEPHINE GIGGLED. ❛ it seems fitting? ❜ she questioned and looked at him with a curious expression on her face. ❛ how so? ❜ she asked, genuinely curious as to what he would respond with. yeah, i meet some of towns more... interesting types. ❛ ohh, i can imagine, ❜ she said and laughed, moving to run her fingers through her wet hair, which was slowly starting to dry. ❛ do you like it? i mean, your job...? was it what you wanted when you were younger or did you have some grand plan that you didn’t get to do? ❜ she asked and turned her body fully towards the man.

“oh, like that makes it any better.” seb teased, laughing softly with a soft shake of the head. “well, she loves to come here. i think it’s one of her favorite places.” he chuckled, smiling a bit. “we’re really good. she’s just starting school again and i’m working on keeping the b&b up and running. pretty much the same old thing.” he nodded, glancing over to where his daughter was skimming over the books, eyes bright. “you need any help with anything while im here?”

⋯ HEARING SEBASTIAN SAY THAT HER STORE was one of gracie’s favorite places warmed the woman’s heart. it made her unbelievably happy to know that people cared as much for books as she did growing up –– especially a little girl like gracie. ❛ that makes me really happy to hear, ❜ she said and smiled softly towards him. tilting her head a little to the side, josephine smiled as he said that they were good and how he was working on keeping the b&b up and running. ❛ i’m sure you’re doing a great job, love. i need to come and see the place, ❜ she said and giggled gently. glancing over towards where gracie was, she let a soft laugh escape her lips. ❛ she reminds me so much about myself, you know. i was the same when i was younger, ❜ she said and laughed, brushing her hair away. ❛ uhh, no. i’m good, thank you. do you want some coffee, seb? gracie, do you want a milkshake? ❜

the smaller girl always loved saturday mornings. it was the time that she and her father would race from their b&b down to the small book shop. gracie would come home with mountains of books that she would read and eventually make them a home in her bookcase. the girl darted ahead of her dad, taking advantage of the head start he technically hadn’t given her. sebastian raced after his daughter, the two laughing about how it was or wasn’t fair. as gracie darted into the book store, seb allowed himself to slow down and catch his breath. he made it into the shop, leaning against the door. “i’m old and she cheated.” he spoke up, small chuckle on his lips. “go pick out your books, bug.” seb smiled over at the other. “how are ya, josephine?”

⋯ ❛ OH COME ON, you’re not that old, you’re just slow, ❜ she said and stuck her tongue out at sebastian with a teasing smile on her lips as she looked at gracie who was smiling brightly at her. go pick out your books, bug. ❛ go on, ❜ josephine spoke and nodded, biting her bottom lip as she watched the little girl run off and over to where the bookshelves were. turning around, she looked at sebastian and smiled. ❛ i’m good, thank you. much better now that your little munchkin is here, ❜ she said and giggled softly, moving her hand to her face and brushing her hair away from her face. ❛ what about you two? how are you guys? ❜

“Oh really?” Ant cocked his head to one side, sawing a french fry in half with his fork. He refused to eat with his hands; or rather, his etiquette refused. “What’s it called? And how’d you get into that? Er, sorry, don’t let me interrupt your eating.” he was known for a barrage of questions and tried to tone it down a bit. 

“I really hope so. Otherwise, I’m in for a rude awakening. You know, the Apple store offers little classes on how-to do things, and I’m busy, but I thought… well I thought it might be worth my time. I don’t want her to know I’m going because that’s a little… lame, but maybe I’d at least know how to use my phone without looking like an imbecile.” he laughed, sipping again from his water glass and admiring the pattern made on the table by years of water rings before him. Another flush made its way across his cheeks and he nodded. “Yeah, I’ve… like I said, old-fashioned. I was more… horseback riding and Latin lessons,” he laughed. “I would love to join you next time.”

⋯ IT WAS PRETTY OBVIOUS that the two of them were pretty different when it came to things like eating hamburgers. the female chuckled softly and she reached down and took a bite of the burger while keeping her eyes trained on the male sitting opposite of her. what’s it called? and how’d you get into that? laughing softly, josephine shook her head and waved her hand around as in a way to brush it off. ❛ don’t worry about it. and it’s called once upon a book, ❜ she said and smiled proudly at the name. ❛ and... honestly, i just always loved to read and getting lost in different stories. i wanted to be a princess, i wanted to be a dragon slayer and... there’s just something about being able to be whoever you want. ❜

⋯ ❛ THAT IS NOT AT ALL LAME. that’s actually really sweet, ❜ josephine spoke and smiled at how much work antoni seemed to put into it all. ❛ and don’t worry, your secret is safe with me, ❜ josephine spoke and winked as she grabbed a couple of the fries, dumping them into the ketchup that she had put on the side of the plate, before putting them in her mouth. ❛ you know latin? wow, that’s impressive. and you are absolutely coming with me! ❜

Antoni brought a bite of burger to his mouth, chewing thoughtfully as he listened to Josephine speak. He really did like her already; she seemed to get things. “Forgive me,” he said after a long moment. “But I’m not sure I’ve asked you what you do. I’m sure you’ve found somewhere better suited to your talents than nursing. Everyone’s got their thing.” 

He thought that over, tilting his head from side to side. “I don’t know… I just… I guess so. Maybe she doesn’t care, but like you’ve seen, she’s very up to date,” he gestured in the air with his free hand, stabbing another piece of burger with the fork held in the other. “And I’m just not. My family isn’t into technology. I’m thirty-four and I only got a phone five years ago.” he laughed. “In my home back in Italy, we just don’t bother with those things. I think I’ve only been bowling one time… and I guess I’ll have to get creative.”

⋯ WATCHING ANTONI TAKE A BITE OF THE BURGER, josephine did the same, swallowing it back and letting it slide down the back of her throat. forgive me. but i’m not sure i’ve asked you what you do. i’m sure you’ve found somewhere better suited to your talents than nursing. she laughed softly and took another bite, swallowing it back before answering his question. ❛ i own a bookstore downtown, actually. well, it’s a bookstore and cafè kind of thing? you can buy a book and sit and read it while you enjoy a hot chocolate or whatever your heart desires, ❜ she said and smiled proudly of it. 

⋯ ❛  I GUESS THAT’S MY THING, ❜ she said and laughed softly. josephine nodded and kept her gaze locked with antoni as he sat opposite of her. ❛ believe me, she doesn’t care if you know what snapchat or instagram is, as long as you genuinely sound interested in what she’s talking about, seeing as social media is her job, and wants to know more, then i think you’re good, ❜ she spoke honestly, shrugging her shoulders in the process. ❛ well, internet isn’t for anyone. there’s nothing bad about that, ❜ she said and a soft chuckle escaped her lips as he said he had just recently a couple of years ago, gotten his first phone. ❛ wait, ❜ she said and put her fork and knives down on the table. leaning forward, she stared at him with a shocked expression on her face. ❛ you –– you have only bowled once in your life? oh my god, i love bowling. you are coming with me next time, i’m just saying. ❜

“Ha,” he shrugged, watching gratefully as their food was placed in front of them. Antoni thanked their waitress and pulled a napkin from the dispenser to lay on his lap. He cut the burger lengthwise before slicing off a bite-sized piece. “Surprisingly, I used to be pretty accident-prone,” Ant laughed. “But I figured it would help to know how to patch myself up.”

“I know, I know, too old isn’t really a thing here anymore, but I’m just worried I’m not modern enough for her. My family is… kind of old-fashioned,” he admitted, wishing he could tell her the half of it. “Definitely. What do you all do for fun? I ask because, well… I don’t know that I know what Clair likes to do outside of video-making. We haven’t quite gotten that far.”

⋯ AS THEIR FOOD WAS PLACED on the table in front of them, josephine smiled at the waitress gratefully and she watched as antoni thanked her and pulled a napkin from the dispenser to lay it down on his lap. tilting her head a little to the side, the blonde let a soft and gentle giggle escape her lips as she did the same thing. surprisingly, i used to be pretty accident-prone. but i figured i would help to know how to patch myself up. ❛ good idea, ❜ she said and giggled softly. ❛ maybe that’s what i should have done. maybe i should have become a nurse or something instead, ❜ she said and shook her head softly. 

⋯ ❛ DO YOU THINK SHE REALLY CARES? i mean, if she likes you, she won’t care if you’re not too modern or whatever. it’s about whether you make her happy and she makes you happy. trust me, she’s probably not even thought about it once. it’s just you’re thinking about it, ❜ josephine said and took a bite of the burger. ❛ and, just what do you mean by old-fashioned? ❜ she asked curiously while taking another bite of the burger. ❛ well, there’s not that much to do here, but... there’s a bowling alley not too far away from here? that’s pretty fun. if you like bowling of course. and, you know, there’s different markets. but usually, there isn’t all that much to do. you kind of have to think of something yourself. try and come up with something. play cards, go swimming... stuff like that. ❜

leo shook his head a little at that. it wasn’t okay. he knew deep down that it wasn’t okay. there was no justification for ignoring anyone, let alone her. he took a deep breath, moving to set the box down on the ground as she stepped towards him again. the last thing he wanted was to drop it again. “yeah,” he let out gently as she said his name, looking down at her intently as her hand came to rest on his shoulder. if only it were that easy to talk to someone about it all. he knew deep down, though, he couldn’t talk about it. he just couldn’t. he took a deep breath, giving her a small nod. “yeah, i’m sorry.” he let out again, knowing that she was only telling the truth. “i’ll be okay. just needed a few days to get my head straight.”

⋯JOSEPHINE FELT HER HEART ACHE AT THE LOOK on leonardo’s face. it was obvious that he was struggling with whatever it was and that he was in pain. and god, did she wish he felt comfortable enough or trusted her enough, to tell her what was going on. but, she wasn’t going to turn her back on him, though. no way. i’m sorry. i’ll be okay. just needed a few days to get my head straight. looking at him, she couldn’t help but feel like that wasn’t the truth. ❛ okay, um, if you’re sure? ❜ she said, keeping her eyes locked on him. she knew that, he needed to come and talk to her. that’s how this would work. she couldn’t pressure him into anything. ❛ do you want to come over tonight? I thought i could make lasagna? ❜ she said and smiled at him with a warm expression on hr lips. ❛ we could watch a movie together or something? maybe you could, uhh, stay the night? ❜

even despite leo not being around near as much as he should have after their night together, here she was, still treating him the same. he didn’t deserve it. god, he knew now that he absolutely didn’t deserve it. he placed the box under his arm as she stepped towards him, shaking his head a little at her words. “i’m sorry,” he immediately responded. “i just uh, i haven’t been in the best place lately. didn’t want you to deal with that.” he let out, shrugging his shoulders a little. 

⋯ ❛ IT’S OKAY, ❜ josephine spoke quietly and softly, keeping her eyes trained on him ash e placed the box under his arm as he had stepped forward. i just uh, i haven’t been in the best place lately. didn’t want you to deal with that. ❛ leo, babe... ❜ swallowing against the lump in her throat, she shook her head and walked over to him. putting her hand carefully on top of leonardo’s shoulder, she squeezed it softly before tilting her head a little to the side. ❛ i –– whatever it is that you’re going through, i want you to know that i’m here for you. i’m going to be there for you, if you ever feel the need to talk to me about whatever is going on in your head. ❜ taking a deep breath, josephine moved her hand to his face and gently caressed his cheekbone with her thumb moving across the skin. ❛ hey, i REALLY DID MISS YOU. ❜

⋯ JOSEPHINE HAD JUST OPENED the bookstore and she was cleaning the floor as it was a quiet morning with not a lot of people stopping by. the radio was playing quiet songs in the background and she hummed and moved around with the mop to the beat. ❛ i’m sorry if i never say, truly how i feel. well let me take this chance today, to finally be real, so mum and dad, my sister too, and my girl i hope you know, that i do love you –– ❜ she sang along with the music, when the front door of the building opened and the sound of the bell rang throughout the small room, causing her to jump a little bit. as she turned around to see who it was, her smile widened as she leaned against the body of the mop. ❛ oh my – you scared me, ❜ she said and laughed as she covered her chest, where the heart was placed, with the palm of her hand. sitting down on her knees, she held her arms open wide so the little girl could give her a hug. as she hugged her tightly, josephine pulled back and looked at the little girl, ❛ so... where’s your dad, huh? did you OUTRUN HIM AGAIN? ❜

Antoni was simultaneously embarrassed and not ashamed at all of his lack of technological knowledge. But what made him blush was Josephine’s acknowledgment of his love for Clair; he hadn’t known it was that obvious. “That’s very nice of you to say. I’m a good luck charm if you need medical assistance, but that’s about it.” Ant laughed, one hand on the table playing with the condensation that fell from his glass of water.

“Hey now,” he said, hands up and feigning innocence. “I know we haven’t known each other long, but I swear I’m reliable. I try to show up.” Ant laughed. “Really? Yeah, sure. I think she would like to go out with some other people. She would never say this, but I’m a little old for her.” he flushed again. “So I am trying to not bore her too much.”

⋯ ❛ WELL, THAT IS GOOD TO KNOW, ❜ josephine said and giggled at what antoni said about being a good luck charm if she ever needed medical assistance. ❛ and now, at least i know who to call if i ever fall and hurt myself or something ridiculous like that, which is a high possibility of happening because i’m ACCIDENT PRONE, ❜ she said and laughed softly, brushing her hair away from her face in the process. 

⋯ JOSEPHINE LAUGHED SOFTLY AND NODDED. ❛ okay, i’ll believe you then, ❜ she said, obviously teasing the male a little bit. she was glad she had met antoni –– she needed more friends around treeville. she would never say this, but i’m a little old for her. so i am trying to not bore her too much. ❛ oh, come on. you’re not TOO OLD for her, silly. but yes, it’s a date. i’ll talk to leonardo next time i see him and maybe we could figure something out. ❜

leo kneeled down to begin cleaning up the mess, although the voice that followed the bell indicating that someone had come in was enough to make him freeze in place. josephine. he closed his eyes as he listened to her, cursing gently under his breath. truth was, leo had been having a hard time dealing with, well, everything. the best way he knew how to deal with any of that was shutting everyone out, too. her included. he figured everyone else would just be better off, honestly. he cleared his throat, hands making quick work of picking everything up before he placed it all back into the box. he rose to his feet slowly, “hey, j,” he let out gently, unsure as to where to begin. an apology would be a good start. he pushed a hand through his hair and no words followed. 

⋯ JOSEPHINE WAITED FOR LEO to put everything away, and when he rose to his feet, a soft giggle fell from her lips at the sound of his voice. ❛ hey, ❜ she whispered, tilting her head a little to the side as she watched his every move. licking her lips absentmindedly, josephine wanted so DESPERATELY TO KNOW what’s going on with him, as there was clearly a lot going on in his head. when he pushed a hand through his hair and no words followed, she decided to take the next step. ❛ i’ve missed you... ❜

“fuck,” leo let out in a huff as the boxes he’d been so desperately trying to balance went toppling out of his arms and to the floor. he should have known better. that taking shortcuts wouldn’t get him ahead even slightly. they never had and yet, he still took them every chance he got. typical. it was then that he heard the front door open, the time being more than enough to make him sigh softly. “hey, we’re closed!” he called out as he leaned down to begin cleaning up the mess. to be fair, they had five minutes to close but leo wasn’t going to tell them that. 

AS JOSEPHINE HADN’T SEEN LEONARDO IN WHAT felt like forever, she went to the vinyl shop, in hopes to find him there. she was worried about him. it seemed like he had a lot on his mind. as she opened the door and walked into the vinyl shop, the sound of the bell announced her arrival and once she entered the room, she heard the familiar voice she had longed to hear. hey, we’re closed. ❛ oh, i’m really sorry, mister. i just wanted to check if this cute guy who works here, and is also in a band on his spare time, is in. i haven’t seen him in a while and i thought i’d stop by and hopefully catch a quick look of him, ❜ she said and chuckled softly as she walked over to the counter and leaned against it. ❛ i believe his name is leo? and he has this cute smile and hazel eyes? would you happen to know where i can find him? ❜
