From 2 Days a Week to a Lifestyle: My Gym Consistency Journey
At the beginning of my gym journey, I was fortunate to go even twice a week. I recall feeling really awkward and confused, totally unsure if I was even doing the exercises correctly. But there was this feeling inside me that urged me to keep coming back. I work out 5–6 days a week, and it’s really become a key part of my life, a lifestyle even, not just for staying fit, but also for keeping my mind clear, building discipline, and boosting my self-respect.
It took time to develop consistency. It came together with little victories: completing a challenging workout, mastering the right techniques, establishing realistic goals, and connecting with fitness influencers on TikTok and Instagram who showed me I wasn’t in this by myself. I also learned a lot from my boyfriend and asked friends to come along to work out. It helped me with my gym intimidation anxiety as well. I was joining a bigger fitness community that supports, teaches, and motivates each other.
The benefits extend far beyond just muscles or looks. I feel more energized, sleep better, handle stress more effectively, and have a boost in confidence. My perspective has changed from “I have to work out” to “I have the opportunity to move my body today.” Even on days when I'm not feeling super motivated, I realize that getting up and moving around will actually help me feel better such as taking a walk at the beach or even the park.
So how do you stay consistent?
Start small: 2–3 days is fine. Just start.
Track your progress: Seeing improvement is addicting. TAKE PICTURES. (It is not wrong to feel and LOOK good)
Find your community: Follow fitness pages, post your PRs, or join a gym class with friends if it helps.
Have fun: Try different workouts. Don’t be afraid to mix it up. Switching days between heavy lifting and pilates for example.
Forgive yourself: Missed a workout? Life happens. Keep going. Do not stop. The biggest set-back is telling yourself you'll just go "tomorrow" but don't go.
If you’re in that phase where fitness feels hard and uncertain, keep showing up. IT'S WORTH IT. If not for you, for your family and loved ones so you can be around for longer.
