1:lovin’ you (lucky) | tommy snyder | red jacket series
even if fujiko is my least favourite character, my favourite lupin track, bar none, is a love song about her from lupin’s point of view:
I’ve got my Kings and Aces
And I’m winnin’ at the races
But I ain’t lucky if you don’t love me
So maybe I’ll keep tryin’
Till my luck starts turnin’
Till someday maybe you’ll love me
- or at least that’s what i think they intended it to be, except they seem to have lost whatever post-it note they’d written the meaning of the lyrics on, and eventually started using it more for scenes where lupin’s hanging out with jigen.
We all know that meeting Josuke is so important for Okuyasu. That first contact with someone who treats him as a person by default could be the start of a world-shifting change for him. Okuyasu was bemused by Josuke’s kindness towards him because he hadn’t received such kindness before. In the past a ‘favour’ is done for something in return, so when Josuke is kind to him for no reason, he doesn’t understand. He can’t understand. He doesn’t have the tools to understand, because kindness is not something he’s been taught about. And you can see how this new concept shakes him - he’s clearly intrigued by Josuke even after he explains his reasons for saving him. He wants to know more. He wants to know about this alternative lifestyle. Because goodness knows, maybe it’s better than his.
And you can see that Okuyasu is so willing to escape. I was speaking to someone who said that Okuyasu’s “heel-face turn” wasn’t believable because it was too abrupt, and I had to disagree. It’s not a heel-face turn, it’s having received permission at last to behave as he really wants to, to behave as what comes naturally to him.
Because somehow, this sweet child has managed to maintain his goodness at heart. Perhaps that’s not fair to say - he’s not as deeply buried under anger and dissatisfaction and trauma to have become quite like his brother or father yet. And thank goodness he met Josuke when he did. Someone who would give him the tools to pull himself out of that hole.
It really is no wonder Okuyasu is so fascinated with Josuke. It’s no wonder he imprinted on him so instantly. Let me tell you, when your world is black and blue like that, and someone shows you a light between the clouds, you grab on and you don’t let go.
