I am tired of some lesbians adamantly saying that bi women keep “appropriating” lesbian culture. I mean, In the 19th century, lesbian had been used both as “women who are attracted to women” and “women who are exclusively attracted to women” depending on the context, but for the most part all women who who were attracted to and dated women categorized themselves under the same word.
Then, once the word “bisexual” got popularized in the 60s, the whole lesbian feminist movement took place etc MGA women shifted to that term while the word lesbian came to mean “an exclusive attraction to women” which is totally cool, as words change their meaning over time. [x][x][x][x]
What isn’t cool is how people are now saying that using words and ideas developed at that time (femme/butch identities, reclamation of slurs, identifying with historical figures etc etc) are for lesbians only, not any other women who are attracted to women. And then when bi people try to use/do any of these things they get promptly told that they can’t as “bi women have already stolen everything from lesbians” and that doing so is an attack on lesbian women. But how can we steal something that we’ve been a part of since long ago?
The word lesbian way back when, and the word lesbian now, while very similar, did not carry the exact same meaning, as the lines between lesbians and bi women had not yet been drawn. You can’t yell at another oppressed group for “appropriating” your words and culture when they were historically a part of your group as well. Bi women wanting to connect to their roots is not lesbophobia, please stop denying us large chunks of our culture, empowerment, and history.
