I wanna write out my thoughts on Aokana so I can't gaslight myself later after reading Misaki route into thinking this entire VN was worth it

Minor spoilers below but nothing interesting happens in this VN anyway so whatever

Common route - it took so f'ing long. The heroines are not interesting (Misaki excluded ofc). Literally the best moment of the common route was the only god damn male character in the main cast getting his ass beaten. I could not wait for this to be over/improve in the routes. Even the first tournament was not really that exciting

Asuka - Jesus Christ man this is the kind of writing they talked about with the Star Wars sequel movies. The final match of the route was genuinely beyond stupid because Asuka is such a Mary Sue she can borderline cheat and win. The romance was horrible and there was so much weirdly stilted writing. What was the deal with the dog???? Asuka genuinely has no personality and the conflict was one note. The epilogue was cool

Mashiro - NOTHING happened. Any cool moment of this route was just Misaki being Misaki. Mashiro's mom was kinda fun but I wanted a little more out of the plotline. I am going to play EXTRA1 (Mashiro fandisc) because it is an easy VNDB entry to add to my list lmao but I don't really give a shit about Mashiro or Arika. Also what's that god damn poncho she wears??????????

Rika - Yonezawa Madoka crying and shouting is always goated, and IMO this was the most interesting route because

a. the conflict was interesting, evolved throughout the story, and even had a twist or two

b. the dynamic between Rika and protag-kun felt the most believable. Two people with very different personalities but dealing with the same struggles at their core.

c. Seeing some actual fucking stakes??? In this VN??? Who could have thought?

Frankly Satouin has been carrying this VN like a mf and her being a big part of Rika's route is almost certainly why it was so good.

Anyway I am praying that Misaki route redeems the time I sunk into this game because it has really been a struggle. Unfortunately the premise and the sport itself are super cool but it just hasn't delivered on anything

So I wanna talk Yonezawa Madoka for a second (seiyuu for Ogiso Setsuna from White Album 2, genuinely a contender for one of the most interesting characters ever written in any form of media)

I just finished Ichinose Rika's route (voiced by Yonezawa Madoka under an alias) and I'm really conflicted bc

This woman can cry and scream like no other, genuinely. She has never once failed to sell it

In Aokana, she's pitching up her voice but is otherwise doing the Setsuna voice. It's fine, but it leads me into point 3

This woman can sing, absolutely. But the Rika ED (sung by her) is so bad because she's singing in character. It sounds like dogwater compared to any WA2 performance

Anyway I kinda wondered why she never ended up getting a lot of other impactful work after a role like Setsuna, but I think it's because Setsuna perfectly played to her strengths as both a singer and a voice actor. Setsuna is THE most interesting visual novel character of all time and her voice acting is a huge part of it.

Just kind of a let down overall because one of the few things I was looking forward to in Aokana was this ending song, because I wanted to hear her belt it lol
