Urban greenery and its effects on ambient temperature
A recent paper published in 2021 by Jonas Schwaab et. al, highlights the effect of urban trees on land surface temperatures (LST) as compared with urban material, that is things like buildings and roads. Using satellite image data they were able to compare surface temperatures of 293 European cities during hot summer conditions. The study found that when compared with urban fabric, LSTs for urban trees 0-4 K cooler in southern Europe, and 8-12 K cooler in central Europe. The study concludes by stating how these findings show the need for further research into heat mitigation in cities.
