Breaking the Rules. A lovely friend came round for dinner the other evening and very kindly brought a bunch of flowers for me. They were Sweet Williams and Germini, and from a supermarket. You may think that the florist snob in me may have turned my nose up at these, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Unexpected flowers turn me into a kid opening presents on Christmas Day. Rather than having to follow the detailed plans that we have created for a client’s wedding arrangements, or put together a bouquet that will suit the recipient’s taste, these flowers are just for ME! I can try new things that may not appeal to others, and may not even work, but basically gives me a chance to “have a bit of a play”. Supermarket flowers also make me happy because I feel no guilt about pulling a bouquet apart and starting again. They haven’t been put together carefully by a florist, they are long lasting, good quality, and inexpensive. From the bouquet I was given I was able to create 3 different arrangements, which will give floral joy around the house for at least a week. When’s the next dinner party...?

If you are anything like me for various reasons you end up with more than one teacher to thank at the end of the year (Teachers, TA’s, after school club etc). They all do an amazing job and as a family we want them to know how much we appreciate them.
This year the boys and I decided that big tea/coffee cups and flowers was the way forward. Something pretty and something practical!
The flowers are all British grown in Buckinghamshire and I had the pleasure of a tour around their growing paddock this weekend (I think I have found my happy place!)

Winter beauties
Eeeek, it’s chilly!  This time last year there were already the first daffodils popping their heads up, but it seems even too cold for snow drops at the moment.
Amongst the gloom of the fog it’s easy to forget that there are some truly lovely flowers that are at their best this time of year, and are actually only around for a short amount of time.  Flowers are also pretty expensive at this time of year too, so it’s always a good idea to find those that are in season, to keep the cost down.
As well as the flowers featured below tulips, hyacinths and daffodils are also starting to appear in the shops - spring is on it’s way!
Ranunculus are such pretty, delicate flowers, with layer upon layer of gorgeous petals.  They look a bit like a vintage rose, and just a little bundle of these in a jam jar can look effortlessly classy.

Hellebore is another lover of the winter weather.  Not only do they look great in an arrangement, but they are also easily grown in the garden (I have 2 plants myself) and offer evergreen leaves, as well as some winter colour.

Anemone are fabulous, they have delicate petals like the ranunculus, but come in the most amazing vibrant colours, with purples so rich they are almost blue.  They are quite short in stem length, so in an tea cup of jar they would give a lovely vintage look.

Just as an update to the anniversary flowers, don't forget that when an arrangement is dying off you can pull it apart, and just take out the flowers that are still going strong, cut the stems and pop them in some fresh water in a jar or vase. It looks like a whole new arrangement!

Not quite Christmas
I had decided that this week's blog was going to be musings about what decorations and arrangements to do for Christmas, but then Mr Moose surprised me with flowers for our wedding anniversary.  I don't often get bought flowers, Mr Moose knows that I would critically analyse any arrangement that he presented, or gawp at the price that he paid.  So he did what he knows I like, and gave me flowers and a project in one go.  As my actual present didn't turn up on time he had a late night dash to a local supermarket to grab whatever bunches of flowers they had in stock at that time.  For me this actually makes things more interesting, as I was present with some random bunches of flowers (some of which wouldn't have been my choice....) and then I have fun mulling over what to do with them.
I did think about separating the flowers out into a group of jam jar arrangements for the dining table, but in the end settled for a low compact arrangement in a square tank vase.  Along with the roses, carnations, gyp, and alstromeria that I was presented with, I also grabbed some foliage from the garden to bulk it out a bit and add some more texture.  I love arrangement that are all one colour, with just a bit of green to break it up a bit.  Finally I added a ribbon round the vase and hey presto - happy anniversary me!

Remembrance day......
On remembrance Sunday I was reminded what I had forgotten....my parents wedding anniversary earlier this week! Worst of all I had to be reminded by my (not so well at the moment) mum. In a panic I rushed out with my flower tool kit with me, jumped in the car and grabbed some supermarket flowers on route. Being me I could not just hand over the flowers as they were, nope I had a flower first....I parked at the end of her road out of site and prepped, arranged and added some extra love to the flowers out of the boot of my car (it’s a Fiat 500 so not exactly loads of room to work with!)
Thankfully she was very forgiving and loved the flowers (pink roses included; as she had in her wedding bouquet over 40 years ago, see I know that, I really am a great daughter normally!)
Happy belated wedding anniversary mum and dad.
