So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. She’s 5′ 11″ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and it’s difficult to find natural fiber clothes that aren’t made of cotton
c. She’s a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked “So where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isn’t polyester” and mom was like ‘go ask your sister’
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like “GET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR U” and honestly I’m thrilled about this

The loss of our best boy to a sudden cancer diagnosis after a long period of decline in QOL has been devastating. It came close on the heels of the loss of the crowd favorite, Bramble. Brambles death was incredibly sudden and unexpected, with no suffering. He appears to have curled up to sleep on a pile of food in his favorite corner and never got back up in the morning. Dameon lingered and every moment we helped him get to food or washed off his incontinence or sat with him late at night was bittersweet. Dameon was the boyfriends first rat, had lived with me for longer than BF in fact, was so sweet we never had training or behavior issues. He’d push into your hand for a scratch. His last day was full of French fries and petting, and naps in a sweater. He went under the anaesthetic being petted by 4 people at once and being told how good of a boy he was. My only regret is not easing him along sooner; had we known about the tumors pressing on his spine and replacing his lung tissue we would have loved him and let him go a month earlier. Sleep well, my best boy. At the end of his life Dameon was not alone with Blackberry however, after the loss of bramble, much thought, and a cage upgrade we introduced 2 young pups from Bramble’s breeder. BF named them Grimgrin and Gruul. They took to Dameon especially and joined him in his frequent naps. BlackBerry has someone to wrestle with once again. Pups are 7 weeks old and growing fast, still learning their house manners.

It’s not as if they have 4 boxes to choose from. No, the poor sad neglected rats have no choice but to lay on the bare floor and huddle for warmth.

Today I worked up a first year puppy vs adopted and annual estimated dog cost spreadsheet. There is only a $600 difference is starting costs for a high end puppy vs adopted dog, and my estimates were far below the $5000 cited on a personal finance blog. I found a way to objectively score the breeds I’m considering instead of just going on perception, which is not helped by the internet echo chambers of dog people. Here’s the end graph; I’m not surprised by the GWP but the Brittany is a surprise contender for sure. Putting my biological modeling skillz to good use! I would love any input on breeds from people who own them, or fellow ecologists/biologists/data nerds!
#Excel for life#brittany spaniels have buggy eyes#German wirehaired pointer breeder about 30 miles away has some solid breeding going on so I'm probably biased there#Still like 5 years from dog ownership and learning in my freetime#Anybody know some good shows or trials in wisconsin to see Real Live Dogs (TM)#I need to stop chasing down strangers and asking to pet their dogs#Volunteering at the humane society starting this week but they mostly get bully mixes hounds and chihuahuas#Just need a sugar daddy to fulfill my dog needs#i'm hella excited to train up a house helping and hiking buddy#you can only ask rats to learn so much. their heads and lifespans are tiny and most of it is peeing
