Captain Rex x Reader
Summary: When Rex gets shot on a mission in the Saleucami system, he has to take shelter at a nearby farmhouse.
Word count: 2.6k
Warnings!: None really, Reader doesn't appear until like the last 20 paragraphs, Female reader, Destroying droids.
Takes place S2 Ep10 of Tcw "the deserter"
How did Kix expect him to stay here all night? Dont get him wrong, he was very thankful that the Twi'lek woman had allowed him to stay in her farmhouse for the night, but now? Did they really think he'd be fine just laying on a bench when he could be battling with his brothers this very moment?
Rex closed his eyes even tighter. He tried to go to sleep, he really tried, but he couldn't. He was just too restless. He was too bored. It was strange to him, taking time to rest instead of rushing right back into battle.
He tried to move his arm again, thinking maybe if it had already healed, he could catch up to Jesse and them and be fighting in no time.
Rex's eyes snapped open as he heard a soft noise not too far from him. Closing his eyes, he slowly reached down to the gun next to him, grabbing it with his good arm.
He listend as the faint footsteps got closer and closer until they were almost at his makeshift bed. He went to shoot whoever it was, but the man hit it out of his grasp before he could commit it.
"Who are you?" The man said, Rex saw it now. The man was obviously a clone like him, but what was he doing here? Almost as if reading his mind, the clone voice his question back at him. "What are you doing here?"
"Your a clone." Rex voiced his thoughts as the other clone pointed his weapon at the Captain.
"So... I see the was has finally made its way out here." The man dropped his weapon as Rex sat up. "I'm guessing I can expect a visit from some droids soon."
"What's your number and rank?" Rex asked, his tone coming out with the perfect level of aggression he was serching for.
"Heh." A low chuckle came from the man. "My name is Lawquane, Cut Lawquane. And I'm just a simple farmer."
"You're a deserter." Venom dripped from Rex's voice as he glared at his brother.
"Well," Cut put his hands in the air. "I like to think im just exercising my freedom to choose: to choose not to kill for a living." He put his weapon against the wall before flicking on the light.
"That is not your choice to make." Cut turned to look back at Rex, walking back over to the injured soldier. "You swore an oath to the Republic. You have a duty."
"I do have a duty, you're right, but it's to my family." Cut glared back at his brother with equal fire on his eyes. "Does that count or do you still plan on turning me in?"
"Do I have a choice?" Rex ment it as a rhetorical question, but also to make his thoughts about the man clear. The man had deserted his brothers, his friends, the republic all for some farm?
Rex felt anger bubble up in his chest. It could've been that he had left the very thing he had been bred to do. Or maybe it was just because he was jealous that he could live a life that Rex had only dreamed of.
"Daddy!" The little girl, Shaeeah, lept up and hugged her father.
"Look what I drew you, Dad!" Jekk, the smaller boy waved a paper around in the air, clearly proud of himself.
Seeing how the kids embraced their father caused Rex's heart to pang in jealousy. He didn't know why he felt like this—he didn't even have a woman– But seeing the life this clone had made for himself had made him realize just what he wanted from life.
"I see you two have met." Suu walks in behind her two children, smiling to her husband as they lock eyes.
"He looks just like you, Daddy. I told him." Shaeeah smiles up at Rex. Rex smiled back.
"Ah, you did, huh?" She nodds as her father stands, now towering over them. "I was just making out guest, Captain, um... what's your number?"
"Rex." Rex spat at the man. "I also have a name, believe it or not."
"He was injured." Suu interupted. "His men brought him here. I told him he could stay just for the night."
"Of course he can." Cut agreed as he looked down to his children. "We never turn away those in need, do we?"
"No!" Jekk shouted, "We always help anyone we can."
"That's right." Cut rubbed his son's head. "You look hungry, Rex."
"No, I'm fine. I'll stay here." He shook his head.
"No, you have to eat with us! Please?" The kids begged as Jekk tugged on the Captains arm.
"They're never going to stop until you say yes." Cut chuckled.
"All right. I'll join you."
Cheers erupted from the children's mouths. Cut grabbed his brothers arm and pulled him up as they began to walk to the house where the dinner was already sitting out.
During dinner, Rex and Cut had resumed their argument from earlier. "Yes, well, you and I may be clones but we're still individuals. You have a name rather than a number, Captain. Why is that?"
Rex thought for a moment before responding. "Perhaps our leaders feel it's a more efficient way of distinguishing us."
"More efficient than a number? Hmm." Cut fired back as he handed Rex a plate full of food. "I doubt the Kaminoans think that way. Still, a name has to make you feel more unique. Especially in an army where everyone looks like you and talks like you."
"Actually," Rex interrupts, "I've never really thought about it."
"Not even once?" Cut asks, challenging him. "And why Is that?"
Rex sits for a moment, Cuts words floating around his mind. It really was a good question. Why was that? Only one thing could come to mind. One person that came to mind.
"Well, most of the Generals there treat us as equals, save for a few nasty ones. They're the reason we all feel even remotely like we're normal. They could call us by our numbers, but they choose not to. They could treat us how we are—expendable, sending us on useless suicide missions, but they choose not too. They treat us with respect and kindness. I'm thankful to them for that. Not everyone views us like they do."
Cut smiles. "I've seen how you look at my family, our home, how you talk like you can't get someone out of your head. Admit it, you've thought about what your life could look like if you left the army. Choose the life you want."
"But what if I am choosing the life I want?" Rex challenges. "What if I'm staying in the army because it's meaningful to me?"
"I'm a clone just like you, Rex." Cut sighs, biting into hisfood. "I know that the war itself isn't meaningful to you."
"It is." Rex barks back. "I'm part of the most pivotal movement in the history of the Republic. If we fail, then our children and their children could be forced to live under an evil I can't well imagine."
"IF you were to have children, of course, but that would be against the rules wouldn't it? Isn't that what someone programmed you to believe Captain?"
"No, Cut. It's simply what I belive. It doesn't matter if it's my children or other people's children. Does that meet with your approval?"
"Of course it doesn't matter if it's yours or other people's children." Cut rolls his eyes. "But you still hope it will be your children. I can tell. You've thought about leaving the Republic, running away with some pretty girl and starting a family. I know, I'm as close to you as I can get."
"I would never desert the republic." Rex snaps.
"Why? Because of the war or because of something–sorry, someone else?" Cut accuses, his voice raising louder than it should've.
Rex scoffs. He obiously didn't know what he was talking about. Rex definitely wasn't in love, and Cut clearly didn't know what was going on inside Rex's head. How could he anyways? Cut was a deserter and a coward, Rex would never leave his Generals like that.
Suu let out a suggestive cough, letting the two know that dinner was done. Cut sighs as he walks around the table picking up everyone's plates.
"Daddy, can we go outside while you clean up dinner?" Shaeeah asks her dad, hop filling her voice.
"Are all your chores finished?" Cut looked down at his daughter.
"Mhmm!" Jekk and Shaeeah both hum as they nod their heads.
"Okay, only for a few minutes. And keep the house in view."
"Thank you daddy! We will! Come on, Jekk." The kids laugh as they run out the door and off into the fields.
"You have wonderful children." Rex says as he stands to help his brother with the dishes.
"I know you think im a coward, Rex, but believe me," A dark expression falls upon Cuts face. "I would fight until my last breath to keep them safe."
The room is silent as they put away the dishes. Silent until a loud scream peirces the house as Rex puts away the last plate.
"Shaeeah, Jekk, what's wrong?" Both Cut and Suu rush out and grab their kids, desperate to find out what happend.
"Monsters! They're chasing us!" Shaeeah crys as she points into the fields they had just run from.
"What monsters? Honey, where?" Suu says as she sets Jekk down in the house. Shaeeah hides behind he mothers leg.
"They hatched from the big egg on the feild!"
Cut grabs the binoculars hanging on the wall and looks out into the feild. "Ah. This is not good. I count 40." Panic fills his voice. How would they fight off 40 with just the two of them?
"Cut, what's out there?" His wife asks, caution lacing her voice as her kids hid behind her arms.
"Commando droids."
"What are they doing?" Rex questions. He too know what 40 of them mean. Trying to run from them would be suicide. They had to fight. But how would two clones possibly take out 40 on their own? They just had to pray a miracle would come their way.
"Suu, get the kids upstairs now." He rushed as he directed his wife in the direction of the stairs.
"Come. Come, children. Come now." She runs upstairs, Jekk still safe in her arms. Cut closes and locks the door before he and Rex run to the weapon cabinet.
"We can catch them in a crossfire." Rex says as Cut hands him a blaster.
"No, Captain." He says, taking a rifle for himself. "With respect, you're not in charge here."
"You need my help. There 40 of them out there not 10. We're going to need a miracle to kill all of them."
"Sir, you're injured. You have only one good arm." Cut turns to walk away.
"But I can fight!" Rex argues back.
"So can I." Cut sighs. "Rex, I need you to be the last line of defense for my family."
Rex gives off a deep, breathy sigh. "I'll take care of them."
"Thank you." Rex runs off into another room as Cut turns off all the lights. He gets into position meer moments before the first four commando droids break through the door. He's able to blast them all before another one reaches through the window to lock Cut into a choke-hold. Cut headbutts the droid before reaching out the window and blasting that one too.
The latch on the floor bursts open as at least ten droids fall out. Cut was able to blast a few of them before one shoots the beam above him. The beam falls to the floor and before Cut can dive out of the way, it falls on his legs.
He tries to escape when he sees the droids walking upstairs, more coming in through the broken doors. "Rex, they're coming for you!" He shouts, praying to the maker that he was ready.
Rex shoots three in a row as the come up the stairs before there are too many. Soon, the floor gives in, sending Rex and a few droids falling back down to the first floor.
Cut manages to get out from under the beam just as Rex falls next to them. A droid grabs Rex by the throat, and another one has Cut in a headlock.
"Vor entye, vod." Cut chokes out, his vision turning blurry. Rex looks to the side and sees his brother nearly pass out.
So this is how I go, Rex thinks, his head hurts, hes struggling to breathe and there's a ringing in his ear Maker, watch over the kids.
Rex closes his eyes, prepared to feel the peace of death... he's ready...
A lightsaber noise pulls his eyes open as he sees a familiar face. He dosen't register who it is until they destroy the droid latched onto his neck, immediately doing the same for Cut.
The Clones fall to the ground in a fit of coughs, both of them rubbing their now soring throats.
"Where are the rest of them?" The Jedi hurriedly yells, looking at the two of them.
Cut coughs as he points up the stairs. She nods before racing upstairs to destroy the droids and save Cuts family.
There were a few droids left outside for the men to take care of while (Y/N) destroyed the rest. After checking the woods, the two clones nod to signal that it's all clear before turning around to make their way back inside.
Before they can make in in the door, however, (Y/N) runs outside and throws herself at Rex, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Rex wasted no time snaking his own muscular arms around the small of the girls back, bring her impossibly closer. He buried his face into her neck. He took in her scent as he breathed in. This was the smell of home. The feeling of her arms wrapped around him and his around hers. That's what home felt like.
"Thank the Maker." (Y/N) Sighed into him, both of your bodys melting into eachother. "I thought you were gone."
Rex felt like his heart was going to beat out of his chest. "I'm fine General. I'm okay."
"What the hell were you thinking!" (Y/N) shoved him back as she shouted at the clone. "I had to hear from Obi-Wan that you got shot. That you got shot, Rex!"
Rex took a second, his face completely shocked. He sheepishly smiled up at down, not daring to meet her eyes. "I-im sorry General. It was an accident."
(Y/N) pulled him back in, holding him tighter this time. "I know. I need you to be safe Rex."
"I'll be more careful next time, (Y/N/N)." He looks at her face in the moonlight. She's always been so beautiful. "But for now," He pushes her hair back beind her ear. "Now I just need to hold you right now. I need to feel you next to me."
It had all clicked for Rex then. Why he always felt so at home with her, why he never wanted to leave her side. All that Cut had been saying about there being someone was right. (Y/N) was his someone. She was his home.
Rex loved her with all he had, he knew that now. But what he didn't know was that she loved him, too. She loved him more than anything.
The only problem was the order. It didn't matter how much they loved eachother. (Y/N) was still a Jedi and Rex was still a clone.
And that would never change.
