First piece fully complete! Now my issue is doing more of this detail lol I can't get photoshop to work at home due to my PC being booty and the program I have at home does NOT compare. So I'm gonna just try do what I can both in and out of college.

Second work in progress, done at home.
Fill top left corner with something
Overlap characters with environment
Fix the hat
I don't like the lack of texture or clumsy painting style, nor the colour palette for this piece all that much. Medibang is decent enough of an art program, but it doesn't compare to Photoshop in brushes and features at all which makes it a lot more difficult to be proud of the outcome of my work.
Something small but still customization of the world is making the sun look like a compass with its stylized pointing.

I'm satisfied with the design I've ended up with, especially in comparison to previous drafts. The silhouette and general aspects are far more unique and distinct and it now fits into a more arid environment.
Frill & diamond shaped neck meant to resemble cobras.
Long nose horn for piercing & defense (rhino inspiration) as well as to pierce into rock. The arms of the wyvern also serve the same purpose, armored and coming to a narrow point to be able to dig into and carve hard surfaces, as well as another form of defense against something else her size (competitors). The wing membrane attaches to these arms which obviously isn't realistic, wings would not be able to function with how heavy the armored part of the arm would be. I'm not strictly relying on realism though so it's fine.
Still debating the exact shape I want for the end of the tail, but I do want it to be dramatic and club-like, resembling rock.

The sketchup for this was originally a lot more zoomed out with a lot of room to put environmental features in the foreground so it seemed more like a scene you'd stumble across, but I ended up deciding I'd rather focus better on the scene than drawing the environment around it as I wasn't building it up to the extent it needed to reasonably be in the foreground rather than the characters, as I simply preferred focusing on drawing the scene instead.
Vagabond & Cassidy were originally going to be dozing off together, but I decided to opt for something less explicit and "in your face" with the two at least straight away, instead hinting at their comfortability with one another through the intimacy of their steeds & relaxed posing. I don't want to focus too singularly on their relationship and make that the defining characteristic of either of them by mistake, so I thought more fitting poses to each character would better define them for a first draft up of a piece.
I don't know if I'll flesh this out into a proper piece for the final product, but it's still a good test of how I want to do things regardless.
Vagabond's mount stayed the same size, but Cassidy's became way bigger than in the original sketch in this piece. I was originally going to draw it then size it down to accuracy, but later decided not to - the size difference between the two is more defining & it's a physical representation of Cassidy's strong personality. Mounts are intended to closely link with their riders so it was a good opportunity.

I'm still very indecisive with what I want to do with the wyvern regarding shapes and silhouette. I don't hugely love any of these drafts and ended up deciding to draw something else instead as I wasn't coming up with anything new. I'll look at a large range of dragon/wyvern art and designs before retrying this.

RESEARCH: HYUN LEE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hyun Lee produces insanely awesome (and gruesome) work with more grim and horrific themes. His layout of his design proposals are clean and easily coherent, as well as showing progress details and elaborating visually on his thought process throughout, especially with the inclusion of inspiration photos. The creature designs featured are really up my alley.
Tumblr media
In addition to this, I've already shown his work as an example of how spectacularly he paints and a very convenient method he uses - using broader or less detailed brush strokes and relying on lighting to make it coherent enough for our brains to piece it together from the distance we're perceiving it, which works very efficiently, saves time and adds some appealing stylisation when paying mind to it.

Cassidy is intended to be Vagabond's counterpart and the balance to her more lonesome and withdrawn traits, being outgoing and stubborn. Her character idea is based around being a town sheriff's prized daughter, a hardy young woman that runs away to aid her faceless lover and keep Vagabond from getting herself killed during commission work. Rather than be the annoying damsel in distress, clueless in the real world kind of woman that western movies love to portray, Cassidy is more than competent, a quick thinker and learner.
Her outfit was designed to be a blend of simplistic and pretty, still convenient and unrestrictive while still feminine and taking inspiration from the era. The colder colours used are to contrast with her counterpart. I included vitiligo because I personally find it pretty and feel it balances out the colour palette a bit, as well as "matching" the pale complexion of her steed.
Cassidy's steed wasn't a design I thought extensively about, more-so going with the flow with just the idea of contrasting the build and appearance of Vagabond's.

Transferring the traditional sketch sheet I had of Vagabond into a digitally created design, allowing me to make tweaks at my leisure before committing to the design sheet. I do need to make the tassels on the legs more coherent/orderly but otherwise I am content with the design.
For the colour palette to stay consistent I'll colour it ordinarily, then use a gradient map ranging from dark reddish brown > brick-like colour > gold and put the layer onto "Pin light" and mess with the opacity until it looks right, usually around the 60% range.
Vagabond intentionally has no authentic name and no perceivable face while in her scruffy rogue attire to erase any sense of identity, only presenting herself as one of the many monster hunters looking for commission work out in the desert as to avoid too much questioning. The moon/star theme of the charms hanging from her hat is due to an affinity to night time where she isn't encountering other people/perceived. Heavy emphasis on a loner "I can do it on my own" mentality.
This is reflected in her silhouette being jagged and sharp to reflect her prickly personality, as well as extensive coverage to hide herself away in. The bandages are purposed to disguise blatantly feminine features of her body with something easily accessible. The colours of her outfit compliment and contrast Cassidy (her counterpart) in being dark and warm, a lot more ragged and unkempt. Her build is lanky and lithe with especially built shoulders due to past physical labour giving her a more masculine build.
Vagabond's steed is meant to reflect and mimic her features with his build being sleek and smooth with limited additional fur, as well as being roughened around the edges due to his broken horn.

RESEARCH: COWBOYS VS ALIENS

Premise:
Tumblr media
Despite the very *specific* concept for this movie, it relates to my project's theming through a Western town having to deal with something unfamiliar and something they can't directly measure to. I don't like this movie nor the premise and it's not really something I'll be using, but I thought it was worthwhile listing regardless.

RESEARCH: WITCHER
Methods of monster hunting.
Geralt's tracking is done through commission boards & word of mouth (and the Witcher sense.) Engagement and methods of killing the creature varies depending on what it is, and he's very experienced with different monsters as well as having access to books to find what he doesn't know. Killing a creature relies on predicting how it is most likely to respond to what.
Knowledge about beasts would come from passed down knowledge more than writing in a Western setting due to the limited education provided.
