“Computer Error” - Experimental Process

I started out with a photo off pexel like the other experiments I’ve been working and brought up the contrast and lowered the saturation of the photo. At first it took a while to finally figure out how I wanted to continue it so I started off small and added thick crosses across her eyes. 

I added the thick crosses across her eyes and also made holes appear from her chin, just next her fingers. I though it be cool to add that to present that maybe she is harming her own image in order to become someone else. I thought I’d continue from the experiments that I did last project and add wires that come out of the holes in her neck. 

I created the wires using a thick black brush and made the brush smaller each time to create the branches that would lead to the thin ends of the wires. I wasn’t able to sue a drawing tablet at the time so I used my mouse instead. The outcome of it was quite nice considering I didn’t use a tablet. 

Then I added binary type to the image to continue the theme of machinery and people. I thought it added a lot to the final outcome. It took a couple of tries to get it right, at first I didn’t have the binary flip over upside down and turned grey. I had the black binary text alone at one point but I thought adding the second type worked and helped fill up the page.  The final thing I did was added in the critical error windows message. 

Continuing the theme of machinery and people from the last project really helped create the final outcome of this experimentation. I love looking at the links between machinery and people. I may continue this throughout my project but for now I while try to experiment with other subject matters.

“Computer Error” - Experimental outcome

I wanted to experiment with creating more graphic based pieces before I further my research into more mixed media based outcomes. I experimented with different brushes and used on my mouse instead of a drawing tablet to see what kind of line work it would produce. I experimented with text by adding binary code on the bottom right hand side to add to the aesthetic and theme of computers and tech. I crossed out the eyes to demonstrate that it isn’t her that’s in control anymore, linking it to the other experiments I worked on. I added wires across her face, which could suggest that she is hooked up to a computer and without that link she loses all meaning. 

I took the idea of mixing computer based tech and linking it with mental health issues, since computers and other tech is now a huge part of our lives. Things like social media and having access to a tonne of information has impacted our mental health dramatically. With sites like Instagram promoting that you have to look your best in every photo, you have people slowly start promoting a life that isn’t theirs. It’s a huge facade in order to get likes and interaction. This has to be my favourite experimental outcome that I've done so far. I really like the overall aesthetic, theme and composition of this outcome.

Pinterest - “graphics”

One of the most interesting things about graphic design is how you can use it to further improve the look of standard digital art. You can use it to spread a message, advertise a product or a film, or to use it to present the digital artwork that you did. You can use photos and edit them to become something completely different, or even completely change the entire mood of the final outcome. I’ve become extremely interested in furthering my work by using graphic design and maybe even motion graphics to try to create something new and interesting with my current work. 

One of the things that lacked in my other projects is the lack of “punch” it had. While in my last project digital art was something new and presented a message based on research I did about Japan’s internal issues, it didn't have the staying power or the grip to pull in audiences and make them question the work you did. Looking at the interest board excites me and inspires me to create something new with my work that is able to grip people in.

X+Y

X+Y is a movie about a prodigy kid, who learns how to let people into his heart again whilst training to compete at the International Mathematics Olympiad.

Our main character , Nathan, is on the autism spectrum. We learn to understand throughout the film how he sees the world. Due to how his brain functions, he is quite fond of patterns and patterns within mathematics. He struggles to understand how to be social around people and how to react to certain peoples emotions. Him and his mother have a hard time understanding eachother and we see the struggle that she goes through in order to try and help her son open up to her like his father did. 

The way that this film presents how different people see different things is quite well done. We are able to understand where Nathan’s thought process is and understand how the other characters can struggle and also cope with trying to see through Nathan’s eyes.

Edmond Was a Donkey - Short Film

Edmond Was a Donkey is a short film about a worker who lives a very dull life and spends his time with his loving wife. When a colleague gifts him a pair of donkey ears, he fully embraces that side of him. When he does he finally sees colour in his life. 

The short film is based on an average worker living their day to day live the same way everyday. It touches on the fact that it becomes muscle memory and finally starts to become dull and grey. Working everyday is tiring and can take a huge toll on someone. We see Edmond finally let go at the end and embrace his inner self of becoming a donkey. It presents to the audience that sometimes the simple things, like lying in the grass in the sunshine or even embracing your inner self, can bring so much colour into our day.  

I really like how the movie presents itself and brings across the message using the donkey metaphor. It presents great message to the given audience, which is obviously aimed middle aged people who work full time.

Yellow Submarine - Movie

This movie is about The Beatles agreeing to accompany Captain Fred () in his Yellow Submarine and go to Pepperland to free it from the music hating Blue Meanies. The movie came out at the same time as their album “yellow submarine”. 

The movie presents itself in a very dreamy quite start, as everything is not what it seems. The 2D animation is werid and extremely abstract, taking inspiration from cartoons at the time with a trippier spin to it. The other 2D animation they do is extremely creative, flashing colours across the characters, etc. Some people may think of this film as a massive acid trip, others see it as a long abstract dream that’s taking you through a long ride down the stream.

Spirited Away - Movie

Spirited Away is a Japanese movie about a girl who has to find a way to free her parents after they have been turned into pigs. There are a bunch of hidden meanings behind the movie since it has quite an abstract story with its weird characters and designs. Miyazaki wrote, directed, and drew the storyboards for the movie; essentially writing the movie with drawings. The movie never had a script and the story wasn’t finished until half way through production.

People have different theories of what the story means, for example it could be a reference to child prostitution. It’s been theorised that the main character’s parents sold her into child prostitution due to debt. This theory was based on the fact that the parents turn into pigs and start eatings tonnes of food, representing their greed and how that could of led them into debt.

Severed Hands - Process

I started out with drawing around the outline of the hand in the photo from pexel stock images. I used the brush tool in photoshop with a softer brush at first to sketch around the hand. Then I used a harsher brush to create the final outline. At this point in time I was unsure whether I was going to keep the outline for the hand or not.  

At this point originally I had the whole hand filled in with the skin colour, it wasn’t till later down the line that I wanted to make the hand seem like it was cut off. My original idea was to have the wires come out of the hand itself rather than the wrist. At this point also I sketched in the finer detail and creases from the hand onto the outcome. 

Then I used the original image to help create the shadow for the hand, working out where the light is coming from and when the shadow fades. At this point I decided to get rid of the outline as it wasn’t working with what I was aiming for. I also roughly made the point where the wires and mechanical parts where going to come out.

I shaded in the finer details for the shadows on the hand. From there I started to work on the mechanical parts. I used two shades of grey to make it look like the hand was hollow to make it stand out more. 

I then used a harsh brush tool to add in the wires. I decided that the colours should stand out a little more from the rest of the hand but still keep them slightly de-saturated .

Severed Hands - Experimental  Outcome

I created the digital piece and then made different versions of them to see how they would stand out from one another. Some have lost saturation, others have more contrast on them, etc. I’m trying to see how each one can paint a different feeling / mood just by doing simple tweaks by adjusting the image settings in Photoshop.

I took a lot of inspiration from avogado6′s work with his simple clean drawings and the dark context behind the image. The context of this is mostly based on lose of control and losing apart of yourself. Hands are extremely useful for day to day life and losing that control while you are used to having working hands would completely lives and routines. It can have a huge mental tole on us, especially since we would have to rely on others for help. We wouldn’t be able to do simple tasks or enjoy hobbies and sports like basketball, gaming or learning how to play an instrument.

FUTARINOKIZUNA - Digital Artist

Futarinokizuna is a digital artist that is very similar to avogado6 but has a completely different art style which is mostly influenced by japanese anime and manga. The style is full of saturated colours and simple line drawing. The shading is usually very sharp and bold with lots of harsh shadows and huge contrasts between light and dark. 

I like how the work tackles the subject matter differently to other artists. The bold use of colour makes the artwork much more friendly and abstract, whilst being very dark in context and tackling big issues. I like their work a lot because of the use of harsh colours and contrast. It presents the subject matter in a different light and is still able to grip an audience in and make them question about said digital piece.

avogado6 - digital artist

“avogado6″ is a Japanese digital artist, who primary posts work about abstract ideas, mental health and current world events and puts a different spin on it to make the audience question what is happening. 

Usually he has a very clean style, with very simple character design. Depending on the mood or the subject matter he will either use very saturated or unsaturated colours. His backgrounds are simple in order to keep the focus on the character or the foreground action that is taking place. He uses disturbing imagery to tell a story or to present a certain subject matter in a different light. 

I am a huge fan of this work and he has inspired to push forward with his kind of work. He is able to grip an audience and make them question about what he is presenting in the artwork. A lot of the ideas that he presents are extremely interesting and I’m fascinated by his view port of certain subject matter.

Reflection on Current Events

Currently there is a global pandemic that is affecting all of our lives at the moment, some dealing with it worse than others. It’s made myself and my other classmates stay at home meaning we aren’t able to do certain things that we have been meaning to do. Something is changing everyday which is changing our current routines constantly and we are found having to adapt to every moment that passes. 

As for myself I have a computer with all the software I need at home in order to keep going with what I want to do for this project. My current plans haven’t changed yet though I’m starting to look more into Graphic design rather than 2D animation. I would like to experiment with 2D animation soon but as for now I’m going to see where graphic design takes me.
