Media (Berserk)
Berserk is a very dark and sad manga about a lone swordsman who is only good at killing. This is very similar to the portrayal I wanted for my main character, as a lone beast who is only good for taking lives. Also the dark brutality of the world Berserk is set in is very reminiscent of my own game, and the similarities can not be ignored.

Media (Luther)
Luther is a crime drama about a rogue cop who bends the rules and is overly aggressive to a lot of the people he inspects. Because of these traits, the show has a very dark and aggressive atmosphere, which is very similar to the atmosphere I was going for when making my game, as the dark part is very fitting with the taking life, and the aggressive part is very close to the forcefully taking life from enemies. Luther was a big inspiration because of these factors when making my game.

Media (Maze Runner)
Maze Runner is a dystopian book and film series about a group of children stuck in maze, before escaping/ The first book is focused o the maze, a deep labyrinth of high walls with hidden beasts inside. This links in with my game in terms of the foreboding atmosphere I was trying to go for, where you would feel like your life could end at any given moment.

Media (Dracula)
Dracula is a book about a vampire called Dracula. The book is about Dracula who is moving the England in the hope of new blood, much like how my character moves around looking for more life to take. Vampires are very similar to my game as my basis of the combat system is taking life from enemies to add your own, much like how vampires need to suck blood to prolong their own life.

Games (Bloodborne)
Bloodborne is a game very similar to my own game in a lot of aspects. For example it is set in a Gothic city called Yharnam, whereas my own game was meant to be set in the Gothic city London in the Victorian era. Bloodborne is also very similar in atmosphere to my game, as the setting it is very dark and gloomy, much like what I was aiming for.

Company (FromSoftware)
FromSoftware is the company behind the dark souls series, being a series of games that each share a very similar atmosphere to the one I was a iming to create with my game. They all have a very dark atmosphere, with most enemies being undead, and so there was a heavy focus on death. My game also tried to keep a heavy focus on death as the playable character causes death frequently by taking life.

Games (Age of War)
Age of War had is a game about evolving through ages to defeat an enemy doing the same thing. One of the ages, the medieval age, has a unit called the sword man, who is a knight in silver armour and gold plating on the joints, which is very similar to my own design for the battle mode of my boss. Although I haven’t played Age of War in a very long time, it certainly had an impact on my life, which is especially obvious here.

Games (Vampyr)
Vampyr is a third person game where you play as a vampire, and suck blood to level up and gain new abilities. This was very similar to how my game would’ve functioned, where you would gain money by selling life you would take on the market, and even level up and gain new weapons for each further battle, making you more powerful as the difficulty increases, and as you kill more people, much like in Vampyr.

Games (Cuphead)
Cuphead is a game that is pretty much exclusively bosses, with a few areas in between like a shop to upgrade and a run and gun area every now and again to get coins for the shop. This heavily inspired my core gameplay loop of constantly fighting bosses, and stopping at a shop to get upgrades. Unfortunately due to time constraints I couldn't fit in a lot of this, and only managed to implement one boss, but if given the chance I would like to continue my Cuphead inspired gameplay loop.

Companies (Nintendo)
Nintendo are very well known for a lot of their game series, one very famous one being Pokemon. The Pokemon series uses a turn based combat system, which is similar to my own game which also uses a turn based combat system. Although both systems are slightly different form the core, in that with the Pokemon games, you are attacking by calling in different Pokemon to attack for you, while in my game you are doing it all yourself, although both use more than one attack per entity.

Games (Star Wars Battlefront 2 - 2004)
Star Wars Battlefront 2 has a unique hero system from the other games in the same series in that when playing as a hero, you will constantly lose health, but you can gain chunks of health by killing enemies. Killing teammates means you lose chunks of health, but the healing part is what’s important. This gaining life by taking life is a core concept of my own game and was heavily inspired by star wars battlefront 2. My own inspired system works in that you are always taking life to increase the duration or quality of your own. This especially applies to the years, where you the idea was that you would kill people to live longer, which is very similar to Star Wars Battlefronts own system.

Games (Hungry Knight)
Hungry Knight was a big inspiration for my life taking system. Hungry Knight uses the idea that id you stop eating, you will die. I took this and applied it to taking years off someones life and giving them to yourself, which was my original concept. Obviously, if you stop stealing years and giving them you yourself to extend your own life, you will eventually die.

Games (Celeste)
When making concept art for my characters, I was worried that the pixel size would mean I wouldn’t be able to get enough detail on the faces for them to be recognisable as faces. Celeste helped me and inspired the faces, as in Celeste, most of the characters don’t have facial features, but are still recognisable through hair, clothes or accessories like Madeline’s backpack. This is also partly why I made all of the character so unique in colour and shape, including unused ones, because it made them much easier to recognise when next to other characters.

Games (Yakuza Like a Dragon)
Yakuza is similar to my game as it has a turn based combat system, but originally before yakuza like a dragon, the games had free combat, where you weren’t restricted by turns. My game is different in that it’s a one versus one, while Yakuza has more group based combat. Yakuza is also different from my game as it is 3D, while mine is 2D.

Games (Hollow Knight)
My game was meant to have an atmosphere heavily inspired by Hollow Knight, with dark colours and a world that feels dead. This would have fit my theme of death really well. The dark atmosphere would’ve fit really well with my game, as the entire thing revolves around killing for profit.

Games (South Park: Stick of Truth)
My game has a very similar combat system to the south park games, in that it’s turn based and uses a pull up menu whenever it’s your turn. This was a heavy inspiration for my own combat system, as in my game, you also use the popup menu to choose attacks. Although the south park games also use a quick time event for everything you do, like attacking and blocking. This judges how much damage you do and whether or not the block is successful. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to implement a quick time event for all of this, but I did get in a block system.

Media (Star Wars)/ Wider World (God)
My boss’ sword is heavily inspired from a lightsaber, as it glows and while it couldn’t be a laser itself, it does shoot lasers from the tip. Although I couldn’t give my knight an actual lightsaber, as that would drift from the character being a kingly figure too much, and a medieval one as well. The sword is also almost the same size as the boss himself, and therefore the playable character as well. This is meant to show great power being with the knight, and the glow is meant to represent an almost holy power, which fits with medieval Kings and Queens, who were believed to be chosen by God himself.
