The Effects Of Social Media On Teenagers In France
21 posts
The goal of my curation project was to find the good and bad sides of social media and new technology on teenagers in France. My purpose was also to be able to argue well in order to be as clear as possible. I focused primarily on my researches and my agents in order to get as much information as possible on the topic. I found out throughout my researches that the use of social media and new technology were tremendously impacting the daily life of teenagers in France and particularly over the last decade. Once I was done with my researches, I decided to write many short stories about the good and bad sides of the new technologies and social media. I realized that using a smartphone on a daily basis can be a great tool for work, for discovering information but it can also be source of sickness, bullying and even death threat.. One of my main goal throughout this curation project was to show people the limits of social media because sometimes we are not enough aware of it but social media can lead to depression, anxiety or even suicide. I found it interesting to make research and then trying to appropriate those researches and develop an argument about it. #curationproject

That corresponds to the kind of tweets that have been posted by this 13 years old French on the gouvernement twitter account over night. It is written in French, it is really vulgar so I prefer not translating but for the one’s that are willing to know what he is saying I could answer to you via private message. Thanks for your understanding

It happened last summer, in July 2017, an official twitter account from the French gouvernement has been reverted by a kid. While the hacker was online, he presumed being a 13years old kid and the son of the community manager. From 1am to 5am, the young kid was attacking users with nasty jokes and disrespectful comments. By the way during his short amount of time connected of the official account of the government, he enjoyed the opportunity to promote his personal account in order to get more followers. Completely useless act because his personal account has been deleted right away next day. Even though tried to calm him over night while he was still in possession of the government’s account, he did not listen to the internet users and kept insulting random people. This act was most likely to place his mother in a delicate situation since she has an important job in France. However some jokes turned bad, the kid attacked people and insulted them like if they were friends... the next morning people twitter users received a message saying that the account have been hacked over the night and they were apologizing for this inconfortable moment. Apologizing to the people who have been insulted also and saying that they were trying their best to make the situation better and solve the problem. Crazy story like the one’s with Obama account, hackers do not have limit and that is a real issue. Until where are they capable to go to? How much risks are they willing to take?

In this case, I would like to talk about this French guy of 25years old who hacked the twitter account of Barack Obama in 2010. That is pretty impressive obviously but those talents could have created some serious problems. Even the president of the United States at that time have been hacked and it shows how dangerous are new technologies. Let’s think about the consequences if wrong or bad information would have been shared on Obama’s twitter. It could have been anything.. Afterwards it could have begat riots in the street, strike in companies, war between population etc... Once he has been interrogated by the FBI, the French hacker told them that he was simply acting as a « nice hacker » and there were no further purpose behind this act. It was like a challenge for him, but he kept telling the authorities that « large companies are not more secure than any other user ». New technologies are being dangerous and we should all be paying attention to it before becoming real victims of it.

The number of hackers in France is increasing and as a result the number of victims too. It is becoming more and more common in France to be hacked on our computers and laptops. It all started with a simple email sent by the hackers, the owner of the new technology device just has to open the email and he will see that he has to answer in the coming 24hours otherwise his device will automatically be blocked. Most of the time hackers are asking via email an amount of money to pay in a short amount of time otherwise they threatened the owner to delete all the informations that are on the laptop. It is sad to see how far new technology can go and what people are able to do with it. It should be efficient and useful for everyone but in this case once again some people wants to exaggerate this use and steal from others. Cyber attacks like that one is happening more and more in France, 250000 victimes in France in 2016. It is three times more than in 2015... the question is: how far new technology can go?

That is a great post, sharing some of the thoughts that I have been writing on my account since I created my page. This constant need of comparing ourselves to others became something crazy and i think it is really sad because we should enjoy the way we are and realize what make all of us so unique from each other.
As I have mentioned before, social media creates a negative image for many young teenagers. Instagram has recently been voted as the worst social media site for young people and their mental health. Over 700 million users worldwide are on Instagram a day. No one wants to post negative things in their life, so Instagram is full of positive or sexual content. By only posting positive experiences from your life, it is made out to look through social media that they have a wonderful life in which nothing ever goes wrong. Other teenagers will compare themselves to those pictures and wonder why their lives are so perfect and their lives aren’t. Instagram is also known for where people get the most likes on a picture. When someone can receive 500 likes and others are receiving 10 it can begin to affecting them negatively as if something is wrong with them.

Here is a bright comment from Daryl Monfils, brother of the famous French tennis player Gael Monfils. I found it interesting, it shows how some social media’s can truly affect people and in this case Daryl is defending his big brother through this post. I think he is talking about a lot of different values that are being lost on some social network. Haters and racists are standing out really easily on social network with the use of simple sentences that can truly hurt people. Social network became a place where judgments are being made on a daily basis and it can truly impacts the rest of the lives of the victims. I think it was a great post to share with you in order to show you the simple and encouraging message from Gael’s brother.

The development of new technology and social media has allowed plenty of companies to grow and get more clients. It allowed companies to be more productive than ever. However, as the time goes on, people are being permanently connected and sometimes it is too much. Some researchers have showed that some people spent about a month in the year on their smartphone, how crazy is that? If we compare that on a daily use it means that every day we spend 2hours on our phones. As we can see in the article, « The impact of consulting social networks on productivity is a real challenge for companies. Employees who are connected on those websites in their workplace can quickly lose track of the time they spend there. » A study done in 2016 in France representing 150 thousands employees showed that 58% of internet use at work is personal. Personal use means that people are either connecting on Facebook, twitter or other social network in order to follow something concerning their private life. While they are doing that, they are not productive at work. Basically, they are getting paid for nothing even though it is not when they signed up for when they got hired by the company.

As a matter of fact, I realized over time that the more we use social network the more we feel alone. The right question to ask any French teenager is: do you spend so much time on social network because you feel lonely? How many of us are actually realizing on a daily basis the amount of time that we are wasting on social network? Personally it is becoming worse and worse, I just start to realize it and I am actually trying to change it because I first signed up on Facebook and Instagram in order to be in touch with my friends but I ended up being « friends » with random people that I do not know well. French teenagers of nowadays are always connecting on social network because of this constant fear of missing out a new actuality but in reality we are missing out the real life that is out there. We are missing the opportunity to spend time outside, discovering new real experience and not being focused all the time on a screen. Real life is not about how many friends can you have on facebook, it is not about how many likes or retweets you can get on Instagram or tweeter. Life is about discovering new people, sharing real experience with them and being able to support them in the brightest or toughest periods of their life.

I did not post anything about it yet on my tumblr account but Social media and new technology are unfortunately great tool for harassment. We already saw thousands of kids in France being bullied on Facebook, Twitter, instagram or Snapchat... some classmates are becoming real executioners. Classmates can turn into hunters and make new technologies effective tools of persecution. A new social network has been created few years ago, it is called « ask.fm page ». Every one can ask questions to a single person and the people asking questions can stay anonymous if they want. As a result, thousands of people are bullying, insulting, criticizing kids without even being known because they are anonymous. There are humiliations, insults and even sexual blackmail.. In 2012, two French teenagers aged of 17 and 18 years old commutes suicide after being trapped by internet users while they thought those people were young girls. In France, already 9% of students have been target by humiliation, nasty nicknames, insults received. The number of victims keep increasing over time and it is really worrying. On the social media, the attacker have less pity because they have this feeling of power behind their screens, they think they can hide and nobody will find them. Fortunately this kind of offenses can be punished by prison and jail sentences. Kids that are being bullied online have to live with this permanent fear that bad information about them circulates on the web. Victims do not want to complain and talk about it because they feel weak, they feel trapped and then they think that killing themselves is a better way to end this story. It is sad but it is happening nowadays... Social media and New technologies can be really dangerous and we need to be aware of it.

Tough to watch but unfortunately it is happening nowadays, kids are being bullied everywhere. On social media a lot and that should never happen again. Social media services should be able to have an eye on dangerous and mean people that are trying to destroy the life of others.

Before going to the United States, I personally had no clue about English, I could just say basic sentences and I could understand a little bit but not much. In order to come in an American college I had to take two exams called the toefl (test of English as a foreign language) and one that american’s should know better: the SAT. Taking those exams was like a nightmare for me because I had only few months to pass those exams and I also had to get good grades at my final exams of high school in order to get my diploma. But I made it and especially because of the development of a website called ETS global, meaning educational testing service. The link that I put above is the ETS official website. That was for me the perfect way to practice exercices, trying to get a better understanding of lectures, trying to understand conversations and one of the most important thing, learning vocabulary. Without this website I do not know how I would have made it because for me it was way easier to learn online on my laptop with funny games and well prepared exercises than working just by myself in front of a paper book. At the end of the day, we can say a lot about social media and technology but with a proper use, people are able to create great projects and the internet can be really helpful. For this article I took my own example because it is easier to develop my thoughts since I have been through this process but I have plenty of other French friends who did like me. They also learned english online and decided to leave France in order to go in an american university. This American dream is becoming more and more famous in France and young French athletes are working hard in order to make it happen.

This video is showing myself playing tennis, I am posting this because it was another way for me to prove American coaches my tennis level. Throughout the recruiting process before going to college, plenty of coaches have been asking for tennis videos either during my practices or matches. It shows how important is YouTube nowadays, people are using it either as a way to get entertain or as a professional approach.

For this article, I would like to talk about a personal experience. At the age of 17 years old, I was still living in France, playing a lot of tennis, big tournaments all over Europe. I was in my 12th grade of high school and I was really struggling to know what to do with my life. Should I try to turn professional? Should I stop being an high level athlete in order to privilege my studies? A lot of questions were going through my mind and I was really lost. It is always tough to take decisions especially when you are 17 and you almost did not experience anything in life before. At that time, I have been contacted by different agencies either in France or in the United States because few American universities were interested in my profil. They were following my results, my French tennis ranking and my academics results also. As a result, I decided to hire an agent based in New York City, the name of his company is Overboarder Sport, I put above the link of his enterprise. I have been through a long process with my agent in order to find the right college for my personal development either academically or tennis wise. I have been in touch with Auburn, university of San Diego, university of Washington, wake forest and plenty of others.. For me it was a total new world and without the help of this Facebook page overboarder sport, I would have probably never been in the United States. Social network played a huge role in my decision because I had the choices between 5 colleges at the end and i first decided to commit in a D1 school in Arizona. The first thing I was doing before talking with coaches and academic advisors was to check the facilities on Instagram, then I was checking the results of the team on their Facebook page and finally I was reaching out almost every guy in the team in order to ask them thousands of questions about the school. Once again without Facebook and Instagram I would have gone to the US with almost no clue about my future environment and my future life. It has been a great tool for me to show to my family where I would go and convince them that I was going in a great place for my development. I always thought about it and realized that it is crazy how a single contact on Facebook with one agent completely changed my life. Two years later I have traveled around 22 states in America, I have met a lot of people and I made friends for life. I discovered how to figure out things by myself, how to live while being far from family, how to get a great communication with others. I got the opportunity to discover a new culture and I am still striving to be a better person day after day. Thanks Facebook for this great experience, it made me realize how great it is to be a human being and travel around the world in order to meet other cultures, ethnicity and languages. For this article I took my own example because it is easier to develop my thoughts since I have been through this process but I have plenty of other French friends who did like me. They have also been reached out by agencies on Facebook. They decided to leave France in order to go in an american university. This American dream is a great bridge for us in order to keep improving sport wise and getting an educational degree at the same time. Once college will be done, my friends and I will try to turn professional

In France, 18 to 24 years old people are consulting their phones at least 50 times a day. That is worrying when we know the consequences of this permanent phone consultation. As I said in an earlier post, this addiction leads to depression and anxiety. As they say in the article, “This too intense use of new technology would, in fact, cause a chemical imbalance in the brain”. In order to get such an accurate conclusion, a doctor introduced a new type of MRI showing the chemical composition of the brain. The doctor decided to try this MRI on 38 random French volunteers, they had an average age of 15 years old. The results are enlightening because it showed that 50% of the volunteers were addicted to their smartphone or social network while the rest of the volunteers did not show any signs of particular problems. Some behavioral therapy have been proposed in order to limit the effects. The doctor wants to understand the reasons for this chemical that overexposes these adolescents to psychological disorder. Social network and new technology are becoming a real threat for development of young French people, some kids are losing control of their lives and it directly impacts the society because the youth is supposed to be the future of France.

Tibo InShape is a famous young French blogger. He became really famous by making videos on YouTube, mostly showing working out videos and different kind of exercices to do in order to get stronger. Moreover being just a strong guy he is also a great speaker, being able to be a source of motivation for thousands of people in my country. In France, he is considered as a young star because he has million of subscribers and he is the most followed « work out blogger » in Europe. I take this example to show that social network is a great way to share real values of life such as discipline in order to get something, in this case if you want to get stronger you will have to work out on a daily basis and pay attention to your diet for example. Tibo InShape is a guy able to share great other values such as giving your best effort, being respectful of others, working hard and being thankful of what you got. He is showing up in videos with disabled people trying to help them to go through their sickness, he is showing his body evolution since he was a kid in order to show people that everything is possible if we believe. Tibo InShape is a great example of a guy who is using social network as a great tool to develop a business and help others to get better. He is explaining through this interview that YouTube is a great way for him to make money because he is getting paid depending on the number of customers, it is probably not as much as what people think but it is still a way to earn a living. Moreover, he used YouTube as a way to promote his own line of clothing, it became really famous and he has been able to open few stores in France. There is also an online website. To conclude I wanted to show that young French people are also able to take advantage of those new technologies and they are happy to be able to help others. New media and technologies are great as long as we use them efficiently . We need to think about what we are posting and how we communicate with others because it can impacts the life of people in both way either badly or great.

You could find the post of a friend of mine, great tennis player posting about the problems that he encountered on social networks. Hopefully this message will be clear to you guys and you will get a better understanding of the message that I am trying to share. People should really be aware of the words that they are using on social network because it can be hurtful and really mean.

As a young French tennis player, I am playing a lot of competition and some of them are famous. It corresponds to international tournaments and every one is able to bet on our matches. Some people are betting all the time from all over the world and they are losing their mind as soon as they loose their bets. I have friends that have been through the same situation of Sam Groth, the guy who is actually interviewed in this article made by Lefigaro. A lot of French tennis players are contacted via Facebook or Instagram most of the time and mafia’s organization from the Eastern Europe are insulting and threatening their family because they lost a match. The mafia actually do not mind about the career of the player but they care about the result of their bets and if they lose they are being really disrespectful by the use of new technology and social media. My friends and I did create a Facebook or Instagram page for fan’s in order to share our results and our tennis journey. We did that because we wanted to show people how we practice, how we live as an athlete and what kind of sacrifices we are making on a daily basis. It was just a pleasure to create social media pages, just because we want to be as close as possible to our fan’s but as soon as our lives are being threatened, we do have to delete those accounts because it is getting unfortunately too dangerous. Some of my friends have been through depression because every time they were losing a match they could see comments such as « idiot, looser, cancer of tennis etc..» on their Facebook or Instagram pages. Some words have been way worse than that but I do not want to write them here. That should not be happening, social media should be able to protect users and they should detect the people that are being disrespectful and dangerous to others.
