So this is a basket of greens picked from my garden. The heat has been up to 107, so many of my greens bolted. I hated to waste them. But I saw a blog post from @tradcookschool on dehydrating your greens and grinding them to make your own green powder for soups and shakes. No bitter taste, and it keeps. Score! This is two sink loads of chard. #littlewinsBIGdeal

Got our first bed in the #canyoncommunitygarden finished this morning. It was a bed started by someone else who ended up unable to work in the garden. Already planted - Pablano peppers, more eggplant than I care for, and some tomatoes hanging in there. We added marigolds, and I'll replace tomatoes that aren't going to make it. We laid out a soaker hose and covered the bed with straw. We put down cardboard and then mulch around the border to keep out weeds. I'll plant fall crops in the second bed. I can't say eggplant is a family favorite, so I'm going to have to find better ways to prepare it. #foodnotlawns #communitygarden

We got the kids up early to work at the new #canyoncommunitygarden. I bought two beds. It costs $10 for 1 bed for a full year. The city pays for the water. Pretty good gig! Especially if you don't have room for a garden bed on your own lot. This isn't our bed. It's someone's who already has theirs established. (We have a late start, so I'll plant fall veggies.) Today, we just cleaned out a bed that hadn't been maintained. As a reward for digging up crab grass, Tyson caught Pikachu as we were leaving. ;) We all leave happy! #foodnotlawns #communitygarden

Made it to the #canyonfarmersmarket and the #amarillocommunitymarket today. These are a few of our treasures. P.S. The chocolate macaroons from the #realfood booth are ridiculous. Grab a bag. You will not be sorry.

We follow @dariborun to keep updated on her beautiful daughter's health. #Virsaviyawarrior was born with her heart outside of her chest and has moved here with her mom to seek medical treatment. She has a you caring page to accept donations, but she and her daughter also make these lovely #jesusdolls to help raise funds for her medical expenses. Her faith is very important to her and has given her the courage to battle on. She is a strong and sweet spirited girl! If you get a chance, please check them out. My daughter loves her doll, which they personalized with her name and favorite colors. We love all things #handmade! We love you, #Virsaviya! #bathshebastrong

I'm all about girls breaking the stereotypical "princess" molds. But my baby girl loves purple, pink and princesses, and I think she is just as independent and free spirited. It's ok to be a girly girl, and it's pretty fun, too. Don't get me wrong, she loves fishing and playing in the mud, too. But she has a special place in her heart for Elsa and sparkly lip gloss.

I was advised that sweet potatoes are a healthier choice than white potatoes, so we started buying some Japanese sweet potatoes with a purple skin and white flesh from Natural Grocers. They are delish, if you haven't tried them. I thought I should order some slips online, but most everywhere I looked was out of stock. (Late in the growing season.) And then I realized I don't need to order them, I can just start my own from the potatoes we were buying because they are organic. And yay! Just like the potato experiments from grade school, my potatoes are sprouting! Next year I'll start earlier, but this was a test to see if it would work. I'll see if I can get some good slips in the ground and cover the plants in the cooler months if I can get them to grow. Fingers crossed it works. #murasaki #japanesesweetpotato

My neighbor is laughing at me as I use my husband's drill to plant this #africandogtooth grass. I'm patching a spot that doesn't have anything growing in it, and if it works good, I'm going to plant it in the backyard, which is void of any grass right now. This is suppose to be a low water grass that doesn't turn yellow if the dogs do their business on it. We'll see how it does!

My girl attempted a wheelie on her tricycle, and she ended up with a goose egg on her head. The older gentleman a couple of houses down heard her crying, so he clipped some roses and sunflowers from his yard and brought them to her. She was so excited and proud of her bouquet. So thankful for such a kind gesture. #beaneighbor

I had several extra tomato seedlings, so I've planted them in my alley to start my #foodisfree garden for anyone to grab veggies from. I'm going to search for some pallets in good condition to make a wicking bed and plant a few other things. Hopefully, they take off well out there, and someone can soon snatch some fresh tomatoes for their plate. #foodnotlawns

Little man made a cane pole earlier this year for Boyscouts. Daddy took him fishing at the park's pond, and he caught two fish on it today. He is all smiles.
