I know people harp on about how weird fandom discourse has gotten recently, but I just saw a post that did it perfectly and I have to put what made me happy into words or I’ll stay up all night thinking about it.

Like first and foremost the OP made every effort to make sure the post wouldn’t cross the dash of anyone that wasn’t actively looking to engage in this debate: they censored the names that might catch an algorithm’s attention, tagged it “blank”-critical for every ship or character that it so much as hinted at criticizing, and did NOT tag those characters or ship otherwise. Next they kept their argument focused on the characters’ actions within the story, there was no moralizing or accusing real people of being bigots, just a frank analysis of the source material. Then finally, even though they had tagged it “character”critical, they didn’t actually criticize that character, it was clear they didn’t agree with the character’s choices, but they didn’t make any grand sweeping claims about the character. Honestly, they probably didn’t need to critical tag it, they were just being cautious of other people’s boundaries.

In fact, despite the critical tag, the way they wrote it bridged a plot hole that makes the character look like a hypocrite. Even though the post could be read as criticizing, it actually made me like and sympathize with the character more. It was so civilly handled, I almost reblogged it (but I have long since decided not to reblog any discourse for that fandom, too messy for my taste).

Dude it is SO FUN and EXCITING to see a reoccurring reader. If you've commented a handful of times on an author's work, I guarantee that they recognize you. You can't imagine how many times I've excitedly informed my friends "the person with the funny cat image commented!" "- anon is back!!!!" and the friends've recognized who I was talking about because I talk about my commenters so often LOL. We love you all!!!
