The Queen's advisor had requested a private meeting, which was not altogether unusual. Many of her advisors wished to speak only where they could not be overheard - a wise thing in a world where secrets could be just as dangerous as sharpened steel. It wasn't that they didn't trust the others of the council so much as a need to ensure that things wouldn't slip away and find ears that they were never meant for. Politics were always a ruthless business.

"My Lady, I wished go give a warning. Some of those within the court are not who they seem to be. They wear glamours and illusions to seem as though they belong, but I caught a glimpse of one with fangs, my Lady."

"Though I appreciate you raising the matter to my attention, you may dismiss it from your thoughts. I am aware of those among the staff who disguise themselves, but the matter is not what you believe it to be."

The advisor was shocked, even frightened. "B-but my Lady, how can they possibly not pose a threat? A fox in the henhouse can only end poorly! You could be in danger!"

"You misunderstand the situation. Though they may be alike to foxes, this household is better compared to a flock of sheep with sheepdogs guarding it. They blend in among the innocent and weak, those who need protection, yet stand ready to act if a threat appears with the wolves none the wiser for it." The Queen smirked now, watching the fear in her advisor's eyes closely.

"The rest of the council must be made aware. We deserve to know these things! What if one of our advisors was compromised? What if I had called this meeting just to isolate you and leave you vulnerable?"

A flash of movement from the corner where there should have been nothing at all, and then a thin silver knife was against the man's throat. Hadn't it been just the two of them? Where had this maid come from?

"If that were the case, you would already be dead. Did you really think me so naive as to go unprotected?"

It was amusing to watch the advisor try to shake his head without nicking himself on the blade.

"Good. Then you understand that you will not speak a word of this beyond that threshold. Do I make myself clear?"

The knife was held a little closer, just enough to made a few drops of blood slip out of the tiny mark in the advisor's neck.

"Y-y-yes, my Lady. C-clear as crystal."

"Good. Then you are free to leave."
