Gateshead 1-0 Grimsby Town 30/01/2016
What an unbelievable day yesterday was. A deserved win for Gateshead over Grimsby and our first three points against the Mariners since August 2011 (obviously not including the play-off and FA Trophy wins over them).
Despite Grimsby’s good run of form, I had a feeling we might win after winning our last two games, including a 2-1 win at 4th place Eastleigh and the players did what should be expected from them and put in 100% effort. We clearly came out motivated at the start of the game and were in front in the 3rd minute, a long ball from Paddy McLaughlin fell to Danny Johnson who buried it past McKeown - awesome finish!
Grimsby’s strikers Omar Bogle and Padraig Amond were not at their best yesterday and missed some good chances to equalise, in my opinion, our defence was superb and Ben Clark was my man of the match. Sam Russell didn’t have much to do but he made two excellent saves, both times I thought Grimsby were going to score.
Whilst Grimsby could've had a point or maybe three, we could also have won by more as Jon Shaw, CJ Hamilton, Paddy McLaughlin all came close to finding the net.
And before I go, I must talk about the atmosphere in the clothesline section, it was amazing, one of the best I’ll ever witness at a Gateshead game and with the chanting at half-time, you’d have thought this was an away game.
