OK, look. I usually just write about my life & troubles in this journal, right? But this is truly momentous, & I don't know how better to express it than in here, so, here we go.

I have loved Taylor Swift for nearly 12 years. Come this Christmas, it will mark more than half of my life of her being akin to an emotional, growing guiding light. I was 12 years old, standing in an empty, windy field at recess, singing Cold As You to myself (along with my beloved Walkman) as I mourned my earliest (and easiest, by far) heartbreak. I was 13 years old, falling in love with a boy who would soon change schools & I wouldn't see for a year, trying not to cry as the school bus took him away & I played Enchanted over & over in my head, the words in the song's bridge & refrain forming a mantra-like plea. I was 14 when I sent Back to December to my best friend, trying my best to apologize for how poorly I handled his heart; 15 when I walked through the doors on the morning of my very first day of high school (I played the song as soon as I began my walk up to those doors). And there is more beyond 15, like hearing You Are In Love & realizing my first, real, true love was my (other, new) best friend, but I don't want to rush ahead. 15 was Fifteen to a T; Miss T. Swift could not have got it more right if she had been capable of seeing the future. And the heartbreak album, Red, came out the year of my heartbreaks. Nine years later, I revisit those pains like I'm playing a Greatest Hits album.

Nine years years (and a month) ago, I heard All Too Well for the first time. I knew immediately it would be the soundtrack to all my heartache, and it was, and I didn't even need to try to make it apply–it just did. Listening to it is like opening a scrapbook that I compiled through earnestness shed in spades, & the most sincere tears I have ever cried. (Containing two heartbreaks that took place around this time in November, so, you know, perfect timing Taylor, as usual). But I'm not going to talk about the boys. I want to talk about Taylor and how she somehow surpasses all else.

As soon as Taylor mentioned, all those years ago, that All Too Well had originally been at least 10 mins. long. I wanted it. That's anticipation built up over 8+ years. And I'm not the only one. It seems like the whole world was waiting on tenterhooks for this song. And it's not just any song! It's All Too Well! Very nearly unanimously acknowledged to be her very best song? How the hell is she supposed to give fans nearly twice its current length, & also match everyone's hopes & dreams? It's impossible, right? When something is just that greatly anticipated, there's just no way that it won't disappoint in some way.

So how...????

It's... even more magical?? More gut-wrenching? Is time working in its favor, the old reopening healed wounds & the new pouring fresh salt all over? Is the new information on her old heartache so terrible that it pains us more to know what else was tearing her apart? Maybe more is always more?

Whatever her secret is, I think she might be magic.

And, loath though I am to say it...

She may have made it even better.
