THERE IS the slightest of smiles at anakin's answer . how silly this boy can be .

SURELY, there had to be something more specific? some different instructions written somewhere to pass down to the next jedi? but anakin thinks over master qui-gon’s words:

“I like watching the fish in the hall of a thousand fountains?” he bites the inside of his cheek. “it makes me feel calmer, I guess – centered like you said. like tinkering with droids do….”

HE STAYS quiet as he lets anakin think . he knows the answers he's given are unsatisfactory . he wishes it weren't so , but the force is - - - its own creature . and as such must be understood in each person's own way , their own PERSONAL way . he lifts his head to listen when anakin finally asks a question . a hum escapes him . the chosen one . a possibly even more complicated topic of conversation .

❝ you're right , ❞ he says quietly . ❝ although i would be careful mentioning that to the council . my master - - - he's always imparted a belief that to truly understand the force , one must endeavor to understand ALL of it , not just the parts the order deems acceptable . one cannot fight against an enemy they are not allowed to know . ❞ he touches anakin's shoulder . ❝ but the order is correct in their warning of the dark side . i have felt its pull . i wager many jedi have . but to know it , to be aware of it , is to better know when and how to resist it . if understanding both sides is something you desire , anakin , i can help you . ❞

THE ANSWER IS SO UNSATISFACTORY that anakin, for a moment, is flabbergasted. master qui-gon can sometimes be evasive and vague, but even in those moments, anakin still feels like he’s learning something. here, he doesn’t know what to think; maybe reading more jedi history might help him understand better.

“master,” he asks after a moment longer of thinking. “what does being the chosen one mean? like, bringing balance to the force and stuff?” how can he do that if he doesn’t understand both sides?

eyes   wide  ,    obi - wan’s   gaze   remains   fixed   on   his   master’s   broad   silhouette.      he   is   drinking   in   every   word  ,      any   bit   of   new   information   he   is   offered   about   qui - gon.      more   often   than   not   he   feels   that   qui - gon   is   ever   distant  ,    as   much   a   mystery   as   he   had   been   the   day   they   had   met.        “      but   he   didn’t  ,    master?      ”

                            THE  DISCOMFORT      settles  deep  within  his  spine ,  the  memory  of  xanatos  echoing  in  his  mind ,  his  muscles  tensing  as  if  here  back  there  once  again . 

                            ❝    no ,  obi - wan .  he  did  not .  he  only  grew  in  his  hunger :  for  knowledge ,  for  recognition ,  for      power     .  suddenly ,  without  me  noticing ,  we  had  become  rivals .  and  bitter  ones ,  at  that .   i  could  feel  the  dark  side  growing  in  him  and  i  felt  powerless  to  stop  it .  before  i  could  do  much  more - - - -  he  left .  the  order .  returned  home  to  his  influential  family  and  the  money and  power  they  promised .  . . . i  don’t  know  what  became  of  him  after  that . i  have  found  myself - - -  unwilling  to  ask .    ❞

THE POINT anakin brings up is a good one and it nearly makes him sigh in frustration . not at the boy , but at the lack of NUANCE the council tends to teach . but he must be careful here . to instill his own thoughts without getting either of them in too much trouble . - - - - as possible as that is , at least .

❝ many of the questions you ask are ones that can really only be answered by your own self , anakin . i have my thoughts and feelings on it , of course , but none of it is fact . and you should not base your opinion on my own . the force is complicated . what you decide to make of it is up to you . i cannot answer that for you . ❞

FROWNING IN THOUGHT, Anakin tilts his head as he considers all that Master Qui-Gon said. There’s two different train of thoughts battling for dominance: what Qui-Gon said about prophecies (Qui-Gon freed him and brought him to the Temple, because he believed … believes still?... that Anakin fulfills one; Anakin wants to make him proud, and can’t help asking more when it comes up [if he’s going to fulfill it, then he has to know what it means]) and everything else that Qui-Gon said. He decides that asking for clarification about one, may help him understand the other, so he says:

“But, Master, if the Force is more complicated than good and bad, why do we focus so much on the Light side versus the Dark side? Shouldn’t we learn about the Force as a whole?”

Scowling, feeling momentarily betrayed by the mentors of his younger days, Anakin crosses his arm. “Well.” Ugh, he can’t believe he’s been doing it all along! He still feels flustered with the realization. “D’you know of other ways, Master? Methods I mean?” What if he didn’t want to tinker with something in order to achieve meditation? Sometimes he wants to use meditation to calm himself before trying to sleep; practicing with his ‘saber or fixing a ship didn’t feel helpful toward that end.

                       HE  LIFTS      his  hands  in  a  noncommittal  gesture . 

                      ❝    as  i  said ,  there  are  many  ways  to  meditate .  i’ve  found  i  prefer  being  around  the  flora  in  my  room ,  connecting  with  their  life  in  the  force ,  feeling  the  peace  and  ease  of  their  one  goal :  to  grow .  it  centers  me ,  grounds  me ,  reminds  me  that  we  are  not  so  alone .    ❞
