500 words statement
Capturing History and Community
Statement
In my final project I have focused on the Auckland’s Ferry building. This Ferry building is not just a beautiful structure, but it also has a rich history. It holds significance for the people around the city. David Burdeny is a photographer who captures the buildings in a way that emphasises the beauty and significance of the building. This is the reason why his works have inspired me.  His work resonates with me because his works have found the balance between presenting the architecture and providing a story about its context. David Burdeny is renowned for his simple and clean style of photography. His skillfully highlights the shape and detail of the building, this is allowing for bringing out their unique characteristic.
So this is an approach for me to try to aim to emulate in my photo of the Ferry Building. My intention is to produce an image that highlights the building;s grandeur but also illustrates how it blends with the surrounding urban landscape. The Ferry building is an important landmark in Auckland city. The ferry building was constructed in the early 1900s, it was formerly a busy hub. These days, it functions as a marketplace and meeting spot. My goal is I want my photo to tell the story of this building, how it connects to the community, supports out the small business, and contributes to Auckland’s extensive history of culture. By exploring different angles and perspectives I intend to poetry the building’s relationship with the city and the surrounding community.
As I work throughout this project I gave some thought to what it means to photograph a building. It entails knowing how the building interacts with the environment and the people who live in it. This self reflection has brought me to choose the best photos for my final edit by using self-reflection as a guide. Each image I want to represent the beauty of the building but also significant to the visitors' everyday lives. For the final image I have to consider each image to ensure that it contributes to the architectural style and show how it relates to the lively atmosphere of Auckland. I want my photo to create the feeling of connection with the viewer’s mind between the building and the city. My project’s main goal is to portray the Ferry building through the lens of David Burdeny’s style. By focusing on the final image I aim to create the image that celebrates the building emphasising the significance in the community.
In Conclusion, I feel that my photographic journey of taking the photo of the Ferry building has improved my understanding of architecture and it’s significant. I believe that we can communicate the stories that buildings hold and how they affect our daily lives. I hope that my work encourages others to view architecture  not just as structure but as fundamental parts of our societies.

Week 11: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
I spent some time exploring the area around my university, capturing various buildings and their unique architectural styles. These photos showcase a mix of modern and historic structures, each with distinct designs that reflect the city's diverse urban landscape. Whether it's towering glass facades, bold geometric shapes, or colorful exteriors, the buildings offer a dynamic visual experience, and I was able to appreciate the intricate details that often go unnoticed in our busy daily routines.
Tumblr media
These four photos are my favorites because they show the size and balance of the buildings around my university. The clear lines of the buildings and the blue sky make a nice contrast. I like how the green trees add a natural touch next to the modern buildings.

Week 10: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
This week, I didn’t have any special plans or outings, but I did take some time to snap photos while going to and from uni. The commute gave me a chance to appreciate the mix of old and new architecture along the way, from historic buildings to sleek, modern structures. Even without a big adventure planned, I found beauty in the everyday sights of the city that I often pass by without noticing.

Ferry building auckland
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Ferry Building in Auckland, New Zealand, is an iconic structure with a rich history dating back to its completion in 1912. Designed by architect Alex Wiseman, the building was created to serve as a ferry terminal, facilitating the transportation of passengers across the Auckland Harbour. Its design features a striking combination of sandstone and brick, which adds to its visual appeal, standing out against the backdrop of modern skyscrapers.
Originally constructed to meet the growing demands of ferry transport, the Ferry Building has seen various renovations over the years, particularly between 1986 and 1988. These updates helped preserve its historical significance while ensuring it remained functional for contemporary use. Today, it continues to serve as a major terminal for ferries, offering connections to popular destinations like Devonport, Rangitoto Island, and Waiheke Island
In addition to its transportation role, the Ferry Building hosts a range of shops and eateries, including the Harbourside Seafood Bar and Grill, making it a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists Its unique architectural style and historical importance have made it a beloved landmark in Auckland, symbolizing the city's connection to its maritime heritage.

Week 9: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
Today, I had the chance to visit my friend’s apartment on Vincent Street, and I couldn’t resist capturing some snapshots of the area’s diverse architecture. Nestled in the urban core, Vincent Street offers a fascinating blend of modern and classic designs. For anyone who loves to explore different facets of urban design, Vincent Street is a hidden gem worth visiting.
Tumblr media
These are my favorite photos from Vincent Street, showing the different building styles that make the area unique. The buildings here have a charm that feels a bit different from the shiny, modern designs of downtown Auckland. I like how these buildings show a slower growth, mixing both modern and older styles.

Week 7: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
Today, I walked down Albert Street and decided to take pictures while heading to Countdown. The street was lined with impressive buildings, some covered in reflective glass, making them sparkle in the sunlight. I was struck by the variety of architecture, from sleek, modern towers to older, more detailed buildings. The trees along the sidewalks added a touch of green to the scene, and the afternoon light

Week 8: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
Today, I went down to Wyndham Street and took some photos of the buildings around me. After realizing I had more time, I decided to head over to Fort Lane, which is close to Britomart. Fort Lane had a quieter feel compared to the busy streets nearby, and it was interesting to capture the narrow alleyways and unique architecture.
However, I feel like this week the lighting in the photos wasn't the best. The clouds were a bit too bright, which washed out some of the details in the buildings. The strong light from the sky made it harder to capture the sharpness and contrast I was aiming for.

Week 6: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
Today, I walked down Queen Street in Auckland and took pictures of the tall buildings. The buildings were very high, with glass walls shining in the soft light of the late afternoon. The streets were quiet, with both new and old buildings standing together. Each one added something special to the busy downtown area. The sky started to turn pink and orange as the sun went down, and the colors reflected off the buildings' windows, making the view look pretty and beautiful.
Tumblr media
The reason I chose this to be my best picture is because it captures the perfect mix of the tall buildings and the beautiful colors of the sunset.

Week 5: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
Today, I went to Victoria Street West in Auckland to take photos of the city. The street has many tall buildings that look both modern and a bit old. The sunlight in the afternoon made the buildings look warm and peaceful. I also took pictures of small things like parking areas, side streets, and some plants growing between the buildings.
Tumblr media
This is my favorite photo because the lights on the building show how beautiful it is. The clear blue sky makes the picture look even nicer. The way the lights shine highlights the building's details, making it look special and peaceful.

Week 4: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
Today, I went to Greys Ave Street to take pictures of the buildings. The street has a mix of old and new buildings, making it look interesting. I wanted to capture the way the buildings are different, like the brick walls of older buildings and the shiny glass windows of newer ones.
In the photos, you can see fire escapes on the side of buildings, signs for local shops, and even some graffiti-covered signs. These pictures show the everyday life on Greys Ave, where you can see how the old and new parts of the city come together. The street was calm, with a few cars parked and not many people around, which made it feel peaceful.

Week 3: Image Production Assignment
Tumblr media
Today, I went to Albert Park in Auckland, which is close to my university. It was a peaceful and beautiful spot with lots of green space, and I decided to take some photos of the park. The weather was nice, and many people were relaxing, enjoying the fresh air, or walking around. The park felt calm and welcoming, and it was the perfect place to capture the quiet moments of the day.
As I watched and took photos, I noticed how everyone seemed to respect each other’s space. People were sitting on the grass, reading books, chatting with friends, or just taking in the view. It showed me how people can share the same space and be mindful of one another, making the park a peaceful place for everyone to enjoy.
Tumblr media
The reason I chose these photos as my best is that they capture the peaceful and natural beauty of Albert Park. The light and shadows create a strong contrast, making the paths, trees, and open spaces stand out beautifully. I especially like how the sunlight filters through the trees, giving a calm and inviting feel to the images. The wide-angle views also give a sense of space and tranquility, showing how people enjoy and relax in the park.
In each photo, there’s a balance between nature and the cityscape, with elements like trees framing the scene and leading the eye toward the background. The photos also highlight the respect people have for the park as they enjoy their time quietly, adding to the serene atmosphere. These images reflect both the beauty of nature and the peaceful behavior of people who share the park space.

Light mapping task 2
Tumblr media
" At both 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM, the building gets bright natural light, but there are some differences. At 8:00 AM, the sun is still low, so it creates long shadows and a warm, soft light. The eastern side of the building is more brightly lit, while the western side looks cooler and softer, giving a gentle and calm feel to the building" .
By 12:00 PM, the sun is high in the sky, and the light is much stronger and direct. The shadows are shorter, and the light spreads more evenly across the building. This bright midday light can make the building look a bit flat, washing out some of the details that were more visible in the morning. Even though both times are bright, the main difference is how the shadows and light look.
At 6:00 PM, the light is starting to get darker, and the sky turns a deeper blue. There is no warm, golden light from the sunset, which means the sun has already gone down or is hidden by buildings. Instead, the streetlights and lights from buildings start to brighten the area with a soft, yellow glow. The building looks calmer now, with some parts still lit by the last bit of daylight and other parts glowing from the streetlights as it gets closer to nighttime.
By 9:00 PM, the natural light is gone, and the building is lit by artificial lights like streetlights and windows. These lights create a different feeling, with some parts of the building lit up and others left in darkness. At night, the building can look more dramatic or mysterious because of how the lights and shadows fall on it.

I chose David Burdeny as a photographer because he has a special way of capturing buildings that I really admire. His photos show the beauty of architecture with a simple and clean style. Each of his pictures tells a story about the building, inviting people to see how unique and interesting it is.

David Burdeny’s photography helps me see not just how buildings look, but also how they can make people feel.

Seconly, I chose Iwan Baan as a photographer because he shows buildings in a way that feels real and connected to people. Instead of just taking pictures of the structures, he captures how people use and interact with the spaces around them. His photos tell stories about the buildings and the lives of the people in them, making his work feel more alive. I love how he focuses on the relationship between architecture and everyday life, which makes his images special.

Thirdly , I chose Heatherwick Studio as a photographer because they create amazing and innovative buildings that stand out from the rest. Thomas Heatherwick and his team focus on designs that are not only visually striking but also connect deeply with the people who use them. Their work often combines different materials and shapes in creative ways, making each building feel unique and special. I admire how Heatherwick Studio thinks outside the box and pushes the boundaries of architecture, which inspires my own love for buildings.
As someone who appreciates architecture, I find the projects from Heatherwick Studio to be truly inspiring. Their designs invite people to engage with the space, whether it’s through playful elements or thoughtful layouts. I love how their buildings reflect the community around them, creating environments that are both functional and enjoyable. This approach to architecture makes me appreciate the role buildings play in our lives and encourages me to explore how good design can improve our experiences in everyday spaces.

Task 1: Domestic Environment (Home)
# Choose three different rooms in a home (e.g., living room, bedroom, kitchen).
I decied to take the kitchen room becasue it's the first room I see every time I go out or come back home.
At 7:00 am, the sunlight is still weak and doesn’t shine much in the kitchen. The room is mostly dim with just a bit of morning light coming in.
At 12:00 pm, the sunlight is strong and bright, fully lighting up the kitchen. The room feels warm and well-lit with plenty of natural light.
At 5:00 pm, the sunlight begins to fade, and the kitchen gets a softer, more gentle light. The room is less bright, with shadows starting to appear.
At 9:00 pm, there is very little natural light left. The kitchen is mostly lit by artificial lights, making the room feel cozy and dim.

WEEK TWO IMAGES
These were some of my favourite pics from the second week especially the landscape images. I chose them because of the strong contrast in the photos, the interesting stickers on the wall, and the unique paint colors. They really stood out to me and made the images more interesting.
