Fire and Ice (1983, USA) A princess and two warriors seeking vengeance cross paths and seek to stop the escalating power of the Ice Lord.

The Bakshi family name’s relevant in animation again. Ralph Bakshi while focused to mostly painting as of late has finished his long-in-development animated featurette some time ago through crowd-funding, and his grandson Miles Bakshi is the second star of Dreamworks’ Boss Baby. And Spring is half-way through but in Canada we’re still getting freezing rain and some random snowfall in places, so here’s Fire and Ice. High-octane bloody fantasy films at the time were becoming the new make-or-break genre of the 80′s, with John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian jumpstarting it. Ralph decided to follow-up on American Pop with a hack-and-slash journey of magic and iron. Again Ralph uses mostly rotoscoped animation as his easiest means to tell his stories, however on Fire and Ice he decides to re-create the handheld camera movements of his live-action material in traditional animation - where as rotoscoped animation is mostly done in-place - all analog and before digital animation software.

To set it apart from his earlier Wizards and Lord of the Rings however, Bakshi assembled a dream team of comic artists and writers to develop and supervise the artistic direction. Bakshi had been long-time friends with fantasy and pulp artist Frank Frazetta and wanted his new film to replicate his illustrations. Bakshi and Frazetta together created the world and characters, as well as supervise the live-action production together. Also Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway for their famous contributions to Marvel Comics penned the screenplay. The final film, though mostly forgettable, is nonetheless a very interesting attempt all around when the loud Mr. Bakshi wanted to inspire others to make animated features like he was doing. A live-action remake from Robert Rodriquez has been talked about and almost put into production for years, including being optioned by Sony and given approval by Bakshi and Frazetta.

Can I find this? Not impossibly. The DVD and Blu-Ray are out of print but are not hard to find. They are reasonable available on Amazon and other online retailers as of writing, it has also been on and off on select VOD platforms as well. The two-disc DVD release includes a feature-length documentary on Frazetta.

Honestly I still don’t know if I rather ship her with Erend or Varl… Too many ships I know haha Anyway, I always want to edit games like The Last of Us, Life is Strange or Bioshock Infinite but these games are so huuuuuuge I can’t even know where to begin. I waited for Horizon Zero Dawn since the start and I was lucky enough to ship them early and think about this video as I played so here we go.
