Forge-Born Chapters 6-10
Chapter 6 Geneva Island of Amazons. After another days sailing Vulcan finally glimpses the island. He stares at his map again to confirm it, and once assured celebrates that he has finally arrived at Geneva. He now begins to raise the sails and secure all his supplies. His father once told him of the island, of its beauty, and of the dangers. In an effort to protect the island from the outside it is surrounded by a barrier that takes the form of waves. As you come nearer to the island the waves get more severe. Hephaestus even once used this barrier to test his armor. As Vulcan came closer and closer the waves intensified, first being little more than ripples now becoming well over 8 feet tall. Vulcan now braises himself to the ship fearing being thrown overboard, for he cannot swim. This however is no fault of his own to never have learned how, he simply is incapable of doing so. His body although appearing similar to human flesh is completely metal ores. Even when he discovered the proper technique for swimming it only slowed down his descent into the waters, his heavy body simply wasn't designed to float. He currently weighs well over 800 lbs while appearing to weigh 180 lbs. Finally he is only 2 kilometers from the island as a titanous wave forms well over 40 ft tall and 280 ft wide. Sensing the danger he takes a risk and lowers his sails; he will need momentum and speed if he wishes to pass. As he does his sails catch the winds of the storm around him propelling him forward at immense speed, nearly lifting his boat out of the water. He waits till he is mere feet from the waves wall, then using the strength that comes with lifting an 800 lbs body he raise the sail, relinquishing control from the mighty winds. He then holds his breath as his ship breaks through the wall of water. He braises against the mast tightly as he's pushed and pulled by the current. He clings to the mast so desperately it begins to crack. Just before it gives over though, the ship breaks through the other side. It takes him some time before he lets go of the mast, when he does so it snaps and falls into the sea. “Dammit!” He shouts. After taking a moment to look around he realizes the storm and waves have gone, the water is peaceful, serene, and so clear he can see the ocean floor below. He can now make out the beach and it's white sands. He is excited this will be his first time off the island, even if it's just another island it's still the outside world. Unfortunately for him his father left out a small detail of the island. While many in this time period call it Geneva in another time far from now it will be known as Themyscira island of the amazons, and they do not take kindly to intruders especially men. As he makes landfall he drops his anchor and leaves the ship, he wonders how he will find his guide but in that moment his attention shifts to a group clad in leather armor on horses. As they ride towards him he waives at them only to be met by an arrow at his chest, fortunately the arrow simply deflects off his metal skin. Still he feels a slight pinch from the impact and understands well what their intentions are. He climbs into his ship and rummages through his supply crate where he pulls out his new blade, he stands now ready to face his enemies. They encircle and surround him, pointing there weapons at him. Upon closer inspection he realizes they’re all women. He blushes a little it's the first time he's ever seen a women and for them all to be so beautiful, new emotions he's never had before begin to surface. While lost in thought over their beauty one women descends from her horse. She ask “ I am Lorelie warrior of Geneva. Who are you? What is your purpose here?” She then points her sword at him. Vulcan thinks of how to respond, he is currently be hunted by the gods and they have many followers and loyalties. Should he hide his identity, no what if he is discovered and distrusted  for it, but what if they would turn him in for favor with the gods. He eventually throws his thoughts aside deciding he is no thinker or tactician, he decides to speak honestly and hope for the best. "I am Vulcan son of Hephaestus." The warriors begin to whisper and gossip among one another, but the leader stares at him unconvinced. "You lie Vulcan has no son." "You are correct in that he has no biological son, I am his adopted son." Still the amazon demeanor has not changed. “Do you have any proof." "No I'm afraid not." "Then what reason have we to believe you. If you cannot provide proof then we must treat you as an enemy. This is the island of amazons, any man to step foot on this island is to be killed." She then immediately lunges at Vulcan aiming her blade at his heart. Vulcan sees her action and attempts to use his sword to stop the blow,  but he is no warrior he's received no combat training, as he raises his sword the amazons blade slides across his pushing it away, and continues its path to his heart. Luckily for Vulcan though his entire body is like armor, the blade shatters after striking him. The amazons and even Vulcan all have a shocked expression on their face. However the amazon leader being an experienced fighter has already returned to sense and pulls a spare dagger from her waist, while pulling back and putting distance between the two. Vulcan seeing the women's actions regains his mind. He kneels down and analyzes a large shard of the broken blade. Now he sees he has nothing to fear. "You should all put your weapons down and save them, you won't be able to hurt me with those they're horribly made." "What would you know of blades." She says staring at his weapon, presuming it to be a decoration. “Not much but still more than you I can assure you." " I very much doubt that as I can see your blade." "You are right. I may still be a novice and produce ineffective blades, however even my blades are worlds apart from yours. You seem to have never treated or tempered them properly. These would barely pierce the flesh of man they could never hope to harm me." Suddenly an idea comes into his mind. "Perhaps that's how I can provide proof. I see your armor is exceptionally well made, but that's to be expected when they're made by Hephaestus and the cyclops, however I assume he was unwilling to forge weapons. If you'd give me the chance I would forge a weapon of equal quality as that armor." Again the amazons whisper among each other." Lorelie then steps out, sheathing her dagger before speaking. “Very well then we accept your proposal, however should you fail we shall have your life; although we cannot cut you there are many more ways to die." Vulcan internally cheers relieved that he need not fear the river stix for now. As the amazons lead him through the island he begins to see signs of civilization, farms, sheds, and small outpost. The creatures here seem to be no different from his island but the foliage and botanical life are completely of a different world, beautifully indescribable flowers, trees that provide a gooey nectar like bee honey.  He is so inexperienced in the world that the idea of sap enthralls him. He  is so immersed in the island that he reaches his hand out to touch a scarlet red flower. Inches before he does though his hand is struck by the tip of a whip. He turns angrily at the women holding the whip, who stares angrily back. Lorelie steps between the two. "Calm yourself terra. Vulcan be cautious of your environment, the world is a dangerous place and it is rude to bear your fangs at those who save you. That flower is called lostbane it's coated in a poisonous pollen, however if you would choose test your endurance against its poison feel free to do so after you've attempted your blade." The angry expression on his face is replaced with one of humility and shame. " I apologize for my ignorance and would like to thank you for saving me" Terra's expression does not change, instead she ignores his words and continues walking. After traveling a bit more they reach a city gate. The amazon leader signals the guards to open the gate. As the gate doors open on the other side is nothing more than simple stone houses. “Why have a gate who do you keep out when none can reach this island?" “The gates are only ever closed when someone reaches the island, so the young and defenseless could take refuge. It's little more than precaution." “ I see then. May I ask why it is your weapons are subpar. I can understand a difference in quality between you're armor and weapons however, I cannot understand such poor craftsmanship." “The island is cut off from the world none may enter, but we may also never leave, because of this we cannot learn skills which we do not possess. It was long ago the goddesses saw our plight and aided us. Our foremothers were all slaves and wenches for men. The goddesses gave us strength to resist and Hephaestus gave us arms to do battle. We fought for centuries against the barbarians and hordes of men. We fought for the gods against their foes, and in return we were rewarded with a land of our own untouched  and untouchable by any save our own. However years ago another war broke out between  the gods and man.  We were prepared to aide the gods until we saw the destruction they brought on men and women. We did not interfere with there war but acted as aides to the women of the war. We gave them food and other aides. To the few we trusted we offered a place here on Geneva. When the war was over the gods demanded the death of any involved. The women we brought to the island were considered traitors as well, and the gods requested us to hand them over. We refused, so they took us to war as well.  After only 1 year our numbers were only a tenth of what they once were, after losing so many we surrendered admitting defeat. The gods in turn split our island in ten pieces  this fragment we stand on is known as Geneva they erected a sea barrier around us like a cage, although they labeled it a shield. We were left apart from the outside world until one day a familiar face arrived Hephaestus god of the forge. He built us tools and and homes he taught us to build houses. We were unskilled in all except the art of war, the gods raided our dominion and took all those with knowledge, so we lived primitively. They took our weapons as well, so we could never again point them at them. In time with Hephaestus’s aid we built cities and a civilization. He taught us to fish and to farm. He would bring us art. Although we originally distrusted him for being a god and were reluctant at first, we began to praise him and hailed him our new god. He however refused our adoration, he told us to think of him as a friend not an idol. Still many of us did so even against his wishes. In fact despite his appearance many attempted to bed him, but he refused all their advances claiming his heart belonged to another. Finally he began to teach a few the art of the forge. one day however he did not return for his lessons.  One day turned to many and where we first felt worry then began to feel abandoned and betrayed. Nearly a year had passed when an wreckage of supplies had arrived at our shore, among its contents was armor, shields, and other various tools for building and farming. Inside a sealed container was paper with writing. However most of it was damaged from a leak that allowed water. From what little they could read it appeared to be instructions on forging. Unable to send word back he would never know they were damaged, so we used what little pieces remained to forge what we did." “I see that would explain your crudely made weapons. You seem to have skipped many steps in the forging process." As he stops hearing the story he begins to realize a crowd is forming, and the citizen are all watching him with the same eyes he had when first seeing the amazons. Seeing the curiosity on his face Aleta addresses him. “Pay them no mind, many simply have never seen a male before. They're young and no male other than Hephaestus has  ever been this far inland for all the centuries we have  been on this island. They're have been few shipwrecked who have reached our shores, but all were slain and thrown back into the sea." Vulcan gulps at the thought of drowning at sea. The group then stops. " We are her." Lorelei says. Vulcan sees a small workshop and is filled with disappointment and disbelief. In mere moments he can see how primitive there process is as he watches the smiths at work." Atria, gira we have use for the forge. Would you kindly allow us to utilize it  and place your work aside for the moment." “What.” gira responds. “It's fine do as you like.” Says Atria. “Thank you sister. Boy you have the forge now deliver on your promise, or else face the consequences for your treachery." The women behind Vulcan jab their spears into his back pushing him forward. He looks around for a moment and sighs. " I cannot do as you have asked."  " Very well for your lies you pay the price, tie him." As the women draw near he redefines his words."Wait a moment I mean I cannot do as you have asked because of your forges lack of ability. If you wish me to complete the task I must build a new forge more capable." The women are shocked at the words, they understand they're technique is lacking, but to think they're forge is also an issue. Atria comes forward and ask "What is the issue with our forge?"  To begin it's not nearly hot enough, to much heat is escaping the forge.” Atria is stunned and blushes at the sheer simplicity of his words, as now that she's heard it she feels the truth behind them. " Very well then what would you need to build it?" night has fallen and Vulcan, atria, and Gira are still hard at work on the new forge. This time Vulcan has sealed the forge completely, and even installed a gate for the entry. He has set up so that air may pass from the bottom of the forge, and even using a cow stomach built a hand pump fan to blow air in. This time the stone he used for the forge was less conductive to heat unlike the steel forge, so that it would instead trap it all inside; a common mistake among forge builders. While steel forges were not unheard of it was usually aligned with special stone inside, to protect the steel, and trap the heat. Their forge was simply steel. Lastly for kindling they simply used wood. While wood is good kindling for all other purposes for a forge it's lacking. Coal is what is needed for a stronger fire, sadly they had no coal mines. So he instead asked them fetch him wood, and used that to craft new charcoal by modifying the old forge into a container and lighting a fire underneath it. In a few hours the wood would become charcoal, once completely dried out. Once the forge was finished he found a new issue; the materials brought to him by Gira were horribly processed, it was more stone than iron. They had not properly separated the elements. After spending some time purifying the material he was left with only a quarter of the original quantity. By now the sun would rise in two hours, and Gira was exhausted. Atria argued with her until she agreed to go to sleep on the grounds that atria would teach her all she had missed. By now Atria was convinced Vulcan was a true smith, his skill far outclassed hers; she now trusted all his story.  Lorelei however remained skeptical and unconvinced. She had ordered a few guards to watch him as she rested for a few hours. Vulcan began to work on a blade that would please the amazon warrior. Atria constantly pestered him with questions as he worked he did not mind however; in fact he felt incredibly happy for his whole life he was the one being taught by both the cyclops and his father, but now he was the teacher and Atria the apprentice.  He carefully explained everything in great detail, how the temperature needed to be right, how you must fold the metal over itself. She was terrified when he told her she must quench the blade in oil rather then water for a better result. Common sense says that would be dangerous, but after demonstrating she was sold. Finally it was morning and Vulcan was hand grinding the blade. He mentioned to Atria she should build a foot powered grinding wheel. She could not even imagine such a device. By now Lorelei was awake and returning to the small workshop. Again there was a crowd of women although they were not there out of curiosity of the art of blacksmithing, but rather for observing a man. This made him grow nervous until among the smiling faces he noticed some were filled with maliciousness and disgust. Once inside the shop Lorelei would see Vulcan sharpening the edge of the blade, he gave her a smile. Behind it was no smug intent still it's what Lorelei perceived. After getting a closer look at the blade though she would lose her tempered look in exchange for one of intrigue; he had done it she thought, he had crafted a beautiful blade unmatched by anything they had ever produced, It was a gladius. After finishing Vulcan then handed her the blade. " There you are, it's a little rough given what I had to work with but still it would be leagues above anything found on mainland." As he says this though he's unsure, he's never seen the blades of the land of Greece and this was only his second truly successful blade. He modeled it after the blade that shattered because he understood nothing of a warriors needs. Lorelei wasted no time testing the blade against the various items lying around the shop, destroying them all. Finally she strikes it against Vulcan’s bicep cutting shallowly into his arm, as though she were cutting into armor. He is angry and shocked after she unexpectedly struck him, he takes a blade lying around the shop and points it at her. The amazons all raise their weapons at him, but Lorelei tells them to lower their arms. She examines the blade and stairs closely at the blood steaming on the blade. It's thicker and browner than most blood. To Atria it reminds her of the hot metals in the shop. Lorelei slowly motions to touch the substance, but after feeling the heat coming from it decides against it, instead choosing to wipe it with a cloth. Vulcan holds his hand over his wound before angrily responding. " Are you satisfied." Lorelei indifferent to him responds. “For now.We shall take you to meet our queen, she has requested you.” Chapter 7 god of building As he enters a grand coliseum Vulcan grows nervous, he has already proven himself to them now he must prove himself to a queen. Luckily he feels more relaxed now that his blade has been returned to him. After walking through a grand hall he notices demolished statues reduced to rubble, 11 in total. At the end of the hall however lies one statue intact he recognizes the figure, His father. In front of it he collapses to his knees, and a single tear comes across his face as he smiles. In all his years he never knew of any beings save his uncle Hades and the cyclops who truly respected Hephaestus, but here now he can see the love the amazons had for him, and the high esteem they placed on him. He is happy to know the world did not simply disregard him, that many besides him would mourn him. As he kneels there a distant voice echoes through the hall. "I see you greatly admired him as well. I have heard news of your arrival; but must admit I was skeptical of you at first, however after seeing your craftsmanship and the great humility you show here now, I realize your words are true. Please stand there is no need for tears save them for fallen comrades and those who float on the river stix.” The words he hears leave him torn for he must now inform them all of Hephaestus's passing. “Queen of the amazons may I have your name.” “ I am known as Lira.” “Queen Lira I would like to first thank you for having me, but I must also inform you of sad news.” “Please speak freely. Vulcan then informs her of all that has passed, Hephaestus banishment from Olympus, his breaking of the first rule of gods, and his passing. At first none can believe his words as none have heard of a god dying since the age of titans. Eventually however they begin to accept it after seeing Vulcan’s somber eyes. “I am sorry for your loss." “Thank you for your words and for your people's respect of him." “The god of the forge was a good man, who we owed a great deal too.We would help out his son as best we can especially since you have already aided us. We will use your teachings of the forge accordingly, but I must inform you I have no idea as to this guide your father spoke of I know nothing of it.” Damn he thought; his journey still cannot begin without a guide. “However we can guide you as best we can.” After hearing these words he is swept with relief. After conversing with the queen he managed to work out a deal in return for a ship he would help teach them to forge a great many things. After there dealings Lira had given Lorelei instructions to grant Vulcan a bed to rest. He slept for a whole day well into the next morning as his exhaustion finally caught up to him. Not long after waking he went outside to seek fresh air, only to see Lorelei outside waiting, leering at him. " Although they all may trust you, I still am skeptical.” Vulcan blushes again as this time Lorelei is out of her armor wearing simple clothes, he can now see her full figure,  and all her curves. Her is now down unrestrained by her helmet its color is a beautiful  sun kissed auburn. He can't help but be drawn to her. He averts his eyes to hide his infatuation, similar to a child. She continues to speak of her distrust, but he hears none of it as the blood rushes to his head leaving him woozy. Suddenly he is struck by her fist and goes down. He looks back up at her caressing her bruised knuckles. "Get those lecherous thoughts out of your mind you fool." After having his dream ruined Vulcan heads to the shop, and teaches Gira and Atria more of forging and building. By days end they have drawn plans to improve the city and build a citadel and aqueduct, whereas before they had simply used a well. The aqueduct was one of Hephaestus side projects so he couldn't take credit when they flourished him with compliments for his ingenuity. After a few more days with the amazons he felt at home he learned of their names and way of life, but still for all the warmth he received he knew it was not all good intentions. For days he could feel the watchful eyes of a few amazonians that would prefer he not be there. They were like daggers stinging him as they followed him everywhere. They were not like Lorelei, her feelings were those of suspicion and distrust these amazons in particular were those of hatred and wraith. In fact on the third day during the night he was attacked, but again the fortune of his skin would undermine the amazons. Ironically they used one of the new daggers crafted by Gira, and although her new blades far outclassed her old ones they were not on the same level as the one Vulcan crafted, so it barely nicked his neck before waking him. Being awoken so suddenly he instinctively through a fist at the attacker breaking their nose. The assailant realized the danger and fled, disappearing into the night. After bringing this up with Lorelei she said she would look into it; she may not like Vulcan, however none was given permission to harm him without just cause. After getting to know her Vulcan began to admire Lorelei her attitude towards him was different from her casual personality. She was brave and very kind to all the others, many respected her, and even sought her guidance. she was only a few years senior to Vulcan, but already she seemed wise. Beyond all that her desire for justice and fairness was unwavering. Vulcan knew even though she may not treat him kindly she could be trusted and counted on. While in the workshop teaching, Lorelei tells Vulcan the queen wishes to see him. He can't picture what for, but chooses to go anyway. After being sent to a chamber he sits quietly waiting for hours. Finally the door opens and queen Lira enters the chamber, and like with Lorelei Vulcan's heart races as he sees her out of her armor. She is much older then he or Lorelei, but still her beauty pairs well with her maturity. It's the vivaciousness and maturity  of an older women. Now however is not the time to be thinking such things as queen lira has bad news to deliver. “Vulcan I apologize but you must leave this island immediately. I'm afraid news of you're arrival will soon reach the gods ears. Lorelei has informed me of the growing animosity for you of a certain sect. Vulcan while it is true we worshipped Hephaestus, not all gave up on the first gods. There are those among who still pray to the Olympians. They also believe deeply that no man should step foot here. It won't be long before there loyalty to me reaches its limits. So you must go immediately; at the beach is a boat waiting for you.” “ Wait queen Lira why would they have loyalty to the gods that cursed them.” “Vulcan you are new to the world so I will tell you now that it is full of inconsistencies and hypocrisy. You cannot waste time seeking answers where there are known. Your father sent you here knowing an amazon among us would not betray you to the gods, and would seek the world as you do.” She turns to the door and says. “ Please come in" Responding to her words the amazon who saved him from the lostbane steps in. She is completely armored and prepared for a long trip. “This is terra, she will guide you in the outside world. I wish you two had more time to get to know each other, but I'm afraid that is a luxury  we will not have. Now go enough words.” As she finishes her sentence a commotion is heard outside,  they hear mumblings, they get louder and louder, and begin to form into words. Ab.... ab.... min... ab...on...finally Vulcan makes out the words abomination. His heart rate skyrockets pounding, hard, angry, and afraid. “Abomination” Louder the chant gets. “Abomination!” Now he can hear it loud and clear. The queen opens the door to see a large cloud raiding the citadel. Chanting and raving they Carry fire and steel. The same steel blades Vulcan helped them forge. Once the doors fully open Lorelei turns to see them, she tells them to shut the doors as she draws her sword. Instead the queen steps out and attempts to calm the crowd "Stop! Your queen demands you siece your actions." For a moment the crowd stops there march and a voice speaks out. “Queen lira we demand you hand over the abomination to us. The gods have demanded his soul.” Queen Lira responds to the voice. “ The same gods that slew our sisters, and cursed us to this prison.” Like fanatics the voices respond in retaliation in defense of the gods. “ The gods are benevolent.” “They work in mysterious ways.” “God before queen.”Lira cannot believe the words she hears. “You have all gone mad, why would you serve those who would think nothing of us.” Again the crowd speaks back at her words. “ You dare speak ill of the gods.” “ Kill the intruder and the heretic queen.” Lorelie move to guard the queen.“ They've gone feral my queen you cannot appeal to them.” “Still what is this? The faction of god lovers was nothing more than a small group, here is nearly every amazon.” Perhaps the fear of the gods retribution drives them to this.”The mob carries on its advance striking down the guards in their path, trampling them, drowning out there screams, and the sounds of there bones being crushed beneath their feet with their cries for the blood of Vulcan and Lira. “No my amazons fear nothing.” Suddenly that intense aura Vulcan sensed on the sea outside the island returns, its faint and doesn't carry the same weight but still he can sense it. No not Zeus but arguably someone much more dangerous. One of the women in the mob shouts “We shall appease the goddess.” Vulcan knows it, a god is at work here and only one god is this nefarious. The god of scorn Hera. Chapter 8 madworld After deducing the cause Vulcan shares his findings with the queen. Lira’s  face is filled with dread and anger, as she nearly breaks her teeth grinding them against each other. “Hera” she groanes. “Lorelei take Vulcan and terra to the ship, while I attempt to stall this mob.” “ No my queen my duty is to protect you.” “ She's right we can't leave.” chimes Vulcan as he unsheathes his blade. Lira follows readying her whip. “No Lorelei your duty is to your fellow amazons. The goddess Hera has casted magic over their minds and drives them mad, just as she did Heracles. They will not stop until they have killed all who oppose her.” As she says this the mob reaches the guards near the entrance and a fight ensues. Many break through and run towards vulcans group, this forces the queen and the others to act in order to defend themselves. The three amazons repel their attackers; vulcan is not trained in combat like the amazons, he has his swing redirected and is slashed across the ribs. This time the cut is significantly worse than ever before, deeper however not severe. Noticing this terra comes to his aid stopping his aggressor by wrapping her whip around her neck, and pulling her back. As she holds her back though another amazon driven mad tackles her to the ground. The group continues to defend itself tooth and nail, but are eventually overrun and subdued. When the mob spreads out we find the group bruised and badly injured. They are tied up and dragged outside to the town square. Here Vulcan sees them all; the amazons who days ago he was teaching and laughing with, even Atria and Gira now called for his blood. Before long the amazons have them tied to post. The crowds chanting and raving dies down, as an older women steps forward. She addresses the crowd. "My fellow amazons we have done well tonight, soon the gods will be at peace and we shall bask in their  good graces again. For too long has this queen and her subjects defiled the great goddesses. Tearing down there statues, cursing there names, denying them love. No more, tonight we strike down these heretics and enemies of the gods; after doing so we shall receive their blessings once more." The crowd cheers passionately, even shedding tears. The older women pulls out the blade of Vulcan as she points to them. “I must thank you abomination for delivering us not only the glory of the gods, but also a new trophy for ceremony." She raise the blade as she says this and cackles like a witch. Vulcan is heartbroken, to think the blade he forged would be used to kill him and his allies. The crowd begins to chant “Blood! Blood! Blood! Blood!” The old women nears terra. "First the blind." She then skewers terra with the blade. Vulcan and the other watch in horror as the blade protrudes from her back, and she vomits nearly a gallon of blood. The crowd is elated and reinvigorated at the sight. Lorelei who has been so reserved and appearingly unfazed to this point, begins to cry and scream passionately. As the old woman begins to retract the blade the horror intensifies. When Vulcan created the blade he had no thought behind practicality, only looks in mind, because of this the blade had unusual curves and hooks; so as the old woman tried retracting the blade she was met with resistance, as the hooks caught hold of the flesh, widening the gash ,and dragging guts out with it. Lorelei then began to vomit uncontrollably at the sight, even the queen  and Vulcan began to cry for the poor Terra. This single moment of pure terror and rage however ignited vulcans spirit; he pulled against the restrains and unknowingly they began to slowly form cracks and splits just as the mast of his ship. The old witch now moved to queen Lira. "Next the heretic." As the queen saw the blade her gut tightened at the thought of Terra's fate. She tried begging and pleaded for her sisters to not be toyed with by the gods, but the crowds chants flushed her out.  She turned to face Vulcan and Lorelei as the blade pierced her body, running her all the way through. “Nooooo!” Lorelei screamed, again in this moment vulcans furry grew and the restraints began to snap  at certain points. The noise muffled by the crowd. Now the women stands in front of Lorelei with a sinful smile across her face. She leans in and whispers. "Do not cry over false gods." Lorelei bites at the women, but she can't reach her. The women then moves towards Vulcan, and stands in front of him. “Now the abomination.” The crowds cheers reach their peaks as she pulls back her blade, preparing to skewer him as well. Just before she drives the blade forward though, Vulcan’s rage also reaches its peak, and the restraints give way. His bonds snap and he reaches for the woman's throat, instantly crushing it between his fingers. The crowds chants stop as they see the women's blood gush from her neck, spraying over Vulcan. Lorelei has also stopped her tears in shock. With his other hand he grabs his blade then in a matter of moments he throws the women into the crowd, and uses the blade to cut Lorelei's bonds. Still in shock and unable to move he picks her up over his shoulder and runs. A few seconds after this the amazons regain their senses, and process what just occurred; enraged they give chase following vulcan into the woods. Vulcan is able to slow them down by using his body to topple small trees that block the path. After putting some distance between him and his attackers he places Lorelei down. They stand there in silence, still assessing the situation and the events that transpired. Vulcan begins to speak. "Lore-" but he is cut off by her. "Were leaving on the ship the queen prepared, but first we are going to stop by my home." "You're just going to leave your home." "What home? These are no longer my sisters, the gods have sunk there poisonous fangs into them." She says coldly in an attempt to place down her emotions. "Come we must move quickly. Fortunately my home is in the same direction as the ship.” “ Shouldn't we head to the ship before they seize it.” “Do not worry they know nothing of it, only me and a few of the queen's most trusted know of it, all of which are dead."  Trekking a few miles they arrive at Lorelei's home. She tells Vulcan to wait outside as she gathers her things she won't be long. She immediately tosses everything necessary into a bag and throws the rest aside with no regards to there treatment. Finally she comes across what she had been looking for, a single arrowhead. It shimmers like a jewel it's glow would put gold to shame. She loads it into her bag and races out the door. Now carrying a bow in hand,  a quiver on her back, and a sack slinged over her shoulder. Vulcan is surprised, she was faster than expected. She gives a nasty look and points the boy at him. He blinks and raise his arms in defense, until hears the the sound of the bowstring release followed by a groan and thud. He opens his eyes and turns to see a dead amazon behind him. “We must leave now" Lorelie says taking off without him. He follows after her and hears the rustling of the forest as more amazons approach. After running a few more miles they reach the beach and the ship, it's thrice the size of his last ship. As they reach the ship Lorelei waste no time. She immediately cuts the anchor and climbs aboard, she heads to lower the sails and tells Vulcan to push the ship knowing of his incredible strength. He use all his might and manages to drive it into the sea. By the time he climbs aboard Lorelei has lowered the sails and the amazons have reached the edge of the forest near the beach. Lorelei then heads towards the rear of the ship facing the beachfront, and draws her bow. As the amazons exit the forest one by one she strikes them down. Vulcan notices that they will not pass the shore fast enough and soon hundreds of amazons will be within spear and bow range, and will sink the ship. He remembers his experiment and reaches into one of his pockets. From which he pulls out a small ball. Hephaestus constantly pestered Vulcan on his secret projects asking to see them, but Vulcan never budged. After spending time messing around with different elements and compounds he discovered something, black powder. It was more crude and less refined, but he had discovered an explosive compound that while not as powerful as gunpowder,  produced a huge quantity of smoke with a small explosion. While the explosion was only powerful enough to singe eyebrows, the smoke could cover a large area and would be hard to breath in. He lit the fuse then tossed it over the beach. Lorelei ask what it was he just did, and In one second a large boom sounded, spreading a heavy fog over the beach. He could hear drones of amazons coughing from inhaling the smoke, he knew they could not see them and told Lorelei to lower her bow. She however kept it drawn at the smoke until they were out of range of the amazons bows. However just as she did another danger had threatened them with sinking, the waves surrounding the island intensified almost as if to match the larger ship. Vulcan still never got the chance to prepare for this how would they cross this obstacle. Last time was pure luck, and miracles seldom repeat themselves. As the waves crash against there ship it rocks and sways, tossing them about. Vulcan didn't realize it before, but the thing that would cause him to drown is also what stopped him from falling overboard. Before his heavy body was harder to throw around by the swaying ship. Lorelei on the other hand was being tossed about like a child's doll, she was at the mercy of the waves. Vulcan began to realize she would go overboard if he didn't do anything, he let go of the railing he was braced to and went to Lorelei. He grabbed her hand and pulled her in close. Upon grabbing her he realized another benefit he didn't realize he was receiving, thanks to the wind and water from the waves she was nearly hypothermic. All along his iron blood was keeping him warm and hard skin was protecting him from the elements, Lorelei had no such protection and would soon die if not treated. He sees now why many don't survive, and why the amazons don't attempt to flee. He makes his way to the interior of the ship and straps her to a post inside; the feelings all too uncomfortable to her given her recent experience,  but she must bear with it as he has to return to steer the ship. Back on deck he heads to the steer and begins to try his best to move between the waves as they form. Fighting the strength of the current as it attempts to take the rudder. Then the ship begins to point downward as a massive wave forms in front of him. As it currines down, it throws him towards the back railing of the ship. He only barely manages to keep from falling off and into the sea. He coughs out some water he accidentally drank and makes his way back to the steer, turning the rutter back on course. Again the ship points down at an even steeper angle as a wave similar to the titan wave he faced before forms however this time when it reaches the side of the last wave it continues to grow until it is nearly twice the size. However he does not lose face he heads straight for it and braces himself he; has grown tired of the world attempting to kill him and faces the wave like an enemy, screaming as he sails for it like a madman. Although sadly for him the situation is hopeless he has no chance at sailing through this, the gods curses are not to be underestimated. Still he buries his fear and continues. Moments before he collides with the wave a gentle breeze blows, clashing the raging winds that were blowing till now, and like magic the wave is split open large enough for the ship to sail through. Vulcan takes no time to ponder the situation, he just takes this chance and sails on through the clearing. On the other side of the wave it happens once again the storm dies and the sea calms he breathes a sigh of relief knowing its over and he's escaped. He falls onto his back and lies there recuperating from his struggle. After a few minutes he stands up and remembers Lorelei. He goes to release her and finds she's still cold he rehangs one of the hammocks and loads it with furs from the ships inventory. He removes her wet clothes and places her in the hammock. He places a large pot under her and fills it with fragments of wood he ripped off of various parts of the interior, then starts a small fire with it to warm her. After a few minutes the color on her face returns and her eyes open. He goes to her and ask how are you feeling she doesn't answer and instead moves a little, leaving open a small gap in the furs exposing her  bare body. In the moment Vulcan didn't realize it but he had stripped her nude, he paid it no attention while her life was in danger; but now that the danger has subsided his face goes red at the sight of this bare beauty. She still notices nothing though as she close her eyes again. Vulcan blushes as he covers her again with the furs. He kills the fire and heads back to the deck. He stars at the sea once again with optimistic eyes his journey continues. Chapter 9 purpose Up high in the clouds of mount olympus where the gods reside there is turmoil. Since the passing of Hephaestus the gods have been in conflict today they hold council in the courtyard. Many gods have gathered 10 of the seated gods and many smaller gods. Insults and curses are thrown about. “You fools understand the seriousness of what you have done." Says a women in foliage. "To kill a god brings chaos and uncertainty, balance has now been altered." A tiny man with small wings shouts back. " What would you have us do demeater? Hephaestus was a traitor he brought it on himself." A man surrounded by water replies. "Horse shit! Hephaestus a traitor. What foolishness. A fool and idealist definitely, but he would never betray his own." “You would dare speak up for this blasphemous fiend who would break our most sacred covenant. I thought you wiser than that Poseidon." Demeter inserts herself once more. "Apollo my boy you are far too young to understand these things. There are things greater then you're pesky rules. Zeus you know this too well to have acted so rashely." Many of the gods gasp and gossip at her words. Hera joins the fray. "Demeter watch your tongue, that is the king you speak too." Demeter scoffs "King. King of what, adultry. Was he again thinking without his brain. Shame to you as well Hera doing nothing as your own flesh and blood is mercilessly beaten, yet you'd still call yourself the goddess of the household and marriage." "Perhaps I will stand by as you are mercilessly beaten as well demeter." A heavily armored man interjects "What does it matter to have lost the smith; he left Olympus long ago and his presence has not been missed. We will simply find a new smith to forge our arms." "Again letting your arrogance and jealousy speak Aires, you despised the smith and feared him. He held value not only as an unmatched craftsman but also as a seat, his very existence was crucial to maintaining balance, without which we invite chaos." “More talk of doomsday lunacy Demeter how unexpected of you." Hermes says as he rolls his eyes. " While every other god continues to argue three remain silent Zeus, Athena, and Aphrodite. Zeus motions Athena to him before whispering in her ear. “Tell me when is hades to arrive, I refuse to begin without him.” Just as he says those words though, a dark fluid seeps from the earth and from the dark abyss it creates emerges Hades. As he emerges the bickering dies down as they know Zeusis ready to begin. Hades greets all the gods then heads towards aphrodite. “Dearest Aphrodite I apologize for the loss of your late husband.” Aphrodite however does not seem grief stricken, still she thanks him anyway. “Hades enough take a seat so we may begin." Says Zeus. “Yes brother how rude of me.” Once in his seat Zeus addresses the crowd. “As you all know we are gathered today for the passing of Hephaestus. He was punished for breaking the first law and creating life. While what was done was necessary, it has left a rift. In order to amend this we must replace him on the council. In order to do that I have gathered you all to recommend and decide upon a suitable replacement." " Must we not first mourn his passing.""Young Heracles we do not mourn the deviants. Hephaestus was ousted long ago, had he not possessed his skills we would have replaced him long ago. " "Still was he not your blood." “Enough Heracles he is gone, be done with it.  Tolag." Zeus calls out a name and a blue man with a horses head steps out. “Yes mighty Zeus what is it you require?" “Tolag fetch us all wine and bring out Heras eye.” “Yes my liege.” As he passes Poseidon he is given a disgusted look by the god. “How can you let such a lowly creature serve on Olympus, titans belong on the earth not the skies of Olympus.” “ I do what I please brother. He is useful and strong so he stays.” Poseidon grunts and speaks nothing of it any longer. Nike steps forward “fellow olympians I would like to propose an inheritor of the vacant seat. My son The god of champions maxis. As you all know he is quite capable, handsome, and strong. He commands the earth itself, a gift not scene since Gaia." Hades chimes in “Yes he is strong, but his arrogance also knows no bounds. A god is more then power. Is he?" The gods begin to murmur amongst each other, as they do hades takes center from Nike. "Allow me to speak as well. May I recommend my own kin, Regon the god of punishment is more than capable and possess a mind to match his strength, which far surpasses Maxis." Heracles gives a few words. “I agree I have accompanied both Regon and Maxis, and maxis while a brave man still has much growing to do. Regon seems more then ready." The gods begin to speak more highly of Regon as Heracles’s words carry weight to character. Dionysus slowly slips through the crowd to the ear of Zeus and whispers. "We cannot allow this, if Regon were to ascend the underworlds and lord Hades reach would grow." “Yes I'm very well aware." Zeus stands up and silences the crowd. “Perhaps we should put it to a test. We shall place trials for Maxis and Regon to determine their worthiness." The crowd settles down and begins to agree, all except Hades. Who knows this is merely Zeus’s attempt to stunt Regon. These trials will be far from faire. "Now that we have settled the matter of worth, we may move on too other issues. Just then Tolag returns with a group of servants and they begin to pour wine for the gods. As they do so Tolag makes his way to the center with a large crystal orb and places it down. Hera then rises and begins to cast magic over it the magic orb shows the island of Geneva. “The abomination yet lives and managed to escape the island of Geneva, try as we might I cannot see him, as he carries with him a device capable of cloaking him. I had given the amazons orders to kill him but they failed and he escaped the island." “The creature yet lives.” Shouts Poseidon. “How can this be allowed.” “It is not, we simply have not yet killed him.” “ Why kill him? Why not let it be, if it poses no threat.” Hades says in an attempt to save Vulcan’s life.  “Have you gone mad hades, the law is clear.” “ I understand the law, but how much effort and resources must me waist in attempting to kill one who cannot harm us. Zeus himself said the creature nearly died from his sheer presence. Can such a thing pose a threat, why not let the earth itself deal with him he will die eventually.” “ No!” shouts Zeus “I shall not allow it.” “Well how do you propose to deal with him.” “ Hephaestus said he will eventually make his way to Olympus to dethrone us, if we cannot find him he will come to us.” “So we wait.” “No the longer we wait the more likely it's strength shall grow.” Says Hera. “ Surely you don't all fear it.” Ask Aires. Athena chimes in. “Foolish words Aires. Lest you forget it was the smiths work, that fell the titans, that caged typhon, that you wear as armor now. This creature is no different. Forged by him there is no telling its capabilities.” Zeus looks to Hera and ask her advice. “ Why not send a creature to hunt him." These words cause Heracles to grind his teeth, as he thinks of his suffering at hears hands. “What creature can we send it is not a being of flesh and blood and it's well armed if it was the disciple of Hephaestus.” “ Then we shall create a new creature one with strength to match his.” Zeus looks to the sky and reaches out his hand, he pulls downward and 15 glowing orbs come down in the shape of a lion. Heracles’s gut wrenches as he nearly screams it's the constellation Leo. Zeus then speaks to the constellation.“Great beast we have use for you yet again, lend us your strength. A loud roar is heard and from it emerges a humanoid figure with a lion's head. The creature is 8 ft tall and covered in fur, it's hands and feet poses large claws. Zeus stands before the creature. “ You like the creature you hunt are not meant to exist. You go against your purpose and oppose my law, you are my hieratic. Now go beast, hunt your prey. The creature then roars. It runs off chasing after its prey. “Still how will he find them.” “ Do not fret Hades, I know where they shall head next.” “How do you know that?” “ Simple they shall seek knowledge of us.” Off out in the distant sea, we find Vulcan standing on deck with Lorelei analyzing a map. " I believe we are here.” “You believe or you know." “Argh! This isn't exactly easy you know." “You go to sea and cannot read a map." “You say that as though you’re any more useful here.” “ I'm a warrior, not a navigator; my place is on a battlefield, not a ship." “Very well then I'm a smith my place is at the forge, not the sea.” “ No you are a fool, your place is drowning in a river." “I should have let you drown.” mumbles Vulcan. “What was that you nave. I would strike you down had I naught owed my life to you.” She pokes him with the blade jabing into his side and  he falls over in pain. Lorelei is stunned she merely prodded him. Why was he in so much pain? She sees him grip his abdomen and bends down to pull up his shirt, where she finds his wound still open nearly doubled in size. Vulcan is unlike mortals, his body is metal so he does not heal in the same way. He does not have reserves that replenish his cells; if he wishes to heal he must consume more irons and other elements in his food, to replace what he's lost. Unfortunately much of the supplies need to be rationed and even should they not, much of the food is lacking in the specific nutrients he needs. “You truly are a fool, why keep this hidden?” “Because you knowing would do nothing. There is nothing that can help me here.” Lorelei is left helpless the gash has grown larger, but he is right there is nothing she can do. She cannot sew the wound shut or cover it, as the steaming iron would eat away at any bandage. All she can do is watch. Realizing there's nothing she can do Vulcan pulls down his garments and stands back up holding his abdomen. Seeing this she now ask a new question. “Why did the smith never teach you to fight, with your strength you would become a god among men?” “ My father was hardly a warrior himself, all his knowledge came from years of being in war not through training, he was barely better than most men. Besides  he never felt the desire to teach me the art of war, it was a chapter in life he rather I not have had to partake in.” “Very well then starting today I shall teach you how to fight. If we wish to go to war with the gods you must know how to properly fight." “Wait who said anything about going to war." " You mean to tell me you don't seek justice for your fathers death.” “I do but why must I take them to war?" Lorelei cannot believe the words she is hearing "You naive dolt. How do you propose to make them adhere to justice. What will your words do that previous ones have not. Mortals have pleaded with the gods for milenia, do you think they have not tried words? The gods refuse to listen to reason, they only understand one universal language strength." “might doth not make right Lorelei." “Then what does? Will words bring back my sisters, will they free them or humanity?  The gods have subjected us to torture because none could do the same to them. No Vulcan you are right might is not the epitome of morality, but it is the governing law of the universe. Those that wield power misuse, just as you do. They use it for evils and you refuse to use it, allowing the evils to continue. How are you any different from these gods if you stand idly by." “ I am nothing like them!” shouts Vulcan "Then prove it. I didn't just lose my sister I took there life's myself, I did so not just to preserve my life and yours, but also to save them. I will take war to Olympus with or without you, I shall make my way to the domain of god's. Will you join me in avenging our fallen or live in a fantasy.” “ Neither I will go with you to Olympus and I will fight if I must, but I will not seek blood or vengeance only justice." “Very well then for now we are in agreement. Where shall we head next?” “We shall need a guide for Olympus one knowledgeable in the gods.” “Why would we need a guide for Olympus, can we not simply climb?” “ The mountain is not so simple, it is the domain of the gods it is filled with magics to deter intruders. Getting there is dangerous enough; if we mean to invade there kingdom we will need someone to show us how.” “ But who? Where can we find such a man?” “ Not man, god.” Vulcan pulls up the map again “If I am correct and we are here, then that means within a 3 day period in this direction we shall reach the island of agona.” “ I have never heard of such an island.” “ Not many have, it is a prison island with only a single prisoner.” “ Whom could be so hated and dangerous to warrant a solitary prison.” “ His name is Prometheus.” “ The god who brought fire to man. He would be willing to help us.” “ I think so, my father spoke very highly of Prometheus. He was very mischievous, but had a good heart and sympathy for humanity. If we offer to free him from his eternal punishment he may aid us with his knowledge of Olympus.” “ Very well then let us set sail for agona.” The two continue their journey reinvigorated with new purpose. Chapter 10 strike while the iron’s hot After 3 days at sea the island of agona come into view.  The pair is excited to see land after being at sea for nearly a week. Since then after eating rations Vulcans wound has shrunk to its original size and depth. Still he knows he must find food rich in iron soon; he tried to fish, but out in these waters the sea is dead. After a few minutes inside the ship Lorelei emerges in her armor. Vulcan is rather disappointed, he had grown accustomed to seeing her out of her armor. Still he had not been able to look her in the eyes since seeing her nude. After time had passed he had gone to apologize, but she would hear nothing of it instead choosing to act as though it never occurred. Vulcan however could not wipe the event from his mind, and would grow nervous while talking with her. Before reaching land however they had just remembered a serious issue how would they dock; Lorelei had cut the anchor back on Geneva. If they left the ship how would they keep it from leaving. Vulcan was suddenly struck with an idea he had rummaged through their supplies and found some rope using multiple strands he tied them to his blade when they reached land using his monstrous strength and his blades incredible durability, he would drive it deep into the earth to act as an anchor. Upon coming close the island though there original excitement was taken as they saw the island’s makeup. It was almost entirely hard stone and Rocky Mountains, no vegetation, or soft earth in sight. Vulcan grew more unsure of his plan as he pondered piercing stone. Lorelei began to worry even if he did, what if the waves threw the ship into the stone wall? Vulcan instead came up with another plan a few meters out from the island he would drive the blade anchor to the bottom of the sea this would be so dangerous as he would then need to pull himself out by climbing the rope, since he could not swim. Lorelei was hesitant at first, but seeing no other choice agreed. " I can hold my breath for 4 minutes; I will immediately sink quickly to the bottom. Take this rope and tie it to something secure, so I can climb back up since I won't be able to swim." " Be careful I won't be able to help you should you lose strength, I cannot lift you." “I will." after Lorelei finishes tying the rope to the mast Vulcan jumps into the water. Within ten seconds he's already at the sea floor, he raises his blade and strikes into the earth below, he pulls on it to check its security. He then slowly begins to pull himself up along the rope although now in the water he finally realizes what it's like to be human. His struggle is nearly impossible as he pulls himself up his weight becomes nearly unbearable, the rope begins to stretch and thin, but he knows it will hold. The only question now is will he. Nearly 4 minutes pass and Lorelei begins to worry she begins to remove her armor in order to better swim, but just as she removes her helmet Vulcan climbs over the railing. The fear subsides and she is relieved."Glad to see you didn't drown." “The feeling is mutual. " They take a smaller row boat and head for the island. Once they dock they head for the centermost mountain. The climb is difficult the rocks are smooth, so there is not much to hold too. Somehow they climb to the peak while catching their breath, in the distance they see it. They see a dead man's wounds slowly close as he rises from the dead shouting please no more father I beg you. Just then a shadow moves across the mountaintop at great speed  to the man and an eagle rapidly descends. The bird is massive nearly a wingspan of 6 meters it dives to the man and begins to to peck at his stomach. It tears apart his flesh as it removes his organs swallowing them, bit by bit.  The man screams in agony. Vulcan and Lorelei confirm this is indeed Prometheus the god who disobeyed Zeus and gave fire to man, cursed by Zeus to eternally be eaten by the bird of prey. They see this happen twice more on the third time however Vulcan shoos the bird off. The bird attempts to strike him with its talons but just as steel is useless so to are its talons. After hitting the bird he flies off. He kneels down beside Prometheus the sight sickens them both after a few minutes the wounds close again and Prometheus shouts again only after a few moments he sees the pair and realizes the birds aren't coming. “Who are you, quickly we must run before the birds arrive.” Lorelei waste no time on his questions and instead ask her own. “Are you Prometheus?” Prometheus continues pleaing until Lorelei tells him they have dealt with the bird, and that it shall not return. Prometheus sighs finally he can relax. He stares up at the pair waiting for his response . “Yes it is I Prometheus the most handsome and charming of gods, the god of great love and fun.” Vulcan turns to Lorelei. "Father did say he was rather full of himself, and could sometimes be a bother." The two heads sink as they contemplate how this narcissist could help them. "It's rather rude to insult someone to there face." Prometheus comments. Lorelie has no kindness for this god as she responds. “If you prefer we can call the bird to return." “How rude of me. Thank you mighty saviors, to what pleasure do I owe your kind visit? Did you come seeking the pleasures of my flesh.” He stares at Lorelei and smiles, and then at Vulcan and raises his eyebrow as if to say, sure why not. Lorelei’s temper rises “You filth!" “ I prefer the term eccentric." “I prefer you dead." Vulcan interrupts the bickering "Prometheus I am Vulcan son of Hephaestus, and this is my companion Lorelei. We have come to free you in exchange for your assistance." “Hephaestus how is that ugly bastard.” “ He is dead slain by Zeus.” Prometheus’s demeanor finally breaks, as sadness sweeps across his face. “Oh that is truly terrible, he was a good god who deserved far better then his fate. Very well I can imagine what you'd like to ask, you'd like my assistance in fighting Zeus. " Yes." “I refuse" “You cannot refuse.” Says Lorelei pointing her sword at his throat. “I already have.” “ Why?” Questions Vulcan. “Because Zeus is not to be trifled with, are my and Hephaestus’s fate not warning enough? None can oppose him and any who do shall meet horrible fates.” “You coward even after all he's done to you serve him blindly!"Screams Lorelei. "Blindly no, but willingly yes. Little amazon you may have never faced a god before so allow me to explain, even among gods Zeus is supreme. His word is law and any who go against it will be punished. You ask me to assist you and in return what; fail and meat a fate worse than this.” “ What fate can be worse than cowardice?” “ Trust me little amazon there are many a fate worse than cowardice.” Vulcan speaks up. " Prometheus you once gave fire to man why? " “Simple because I thought it would be funny, only Zeus did not laugh." “Prometheus my father told me much about you. I know that not to be the whole truth, I know you also pleaded with Zeus to return fire, when you saw them suffering without it. I heard you were a man with integrity. Tell me can you live a life like this for eternity, a life of subservience and fear. I will free you regardless of your choice, but even should I do so, you will always live in fear under the might of Zeus. Simply aid us, you need not fight only show us the path through olympus." For a time Prometheus ponders the words spoken by Vulcan. He stares at him. "You truly are your father's child. Freeing me regardless, only asking me for directions not to fight. Very well boy I will guide you in your journey and along the way get back at my father. Unbond me and I shall be your guide.” Lorelei and Vulcan smile at there success Vulcan holds the chains between his hands he looks around and ask Lorelei to borrow her dagger. He then proceeds to pick up a large stone. He places the blade directly over the chain link and hammers it down with the rock he continues to do so, slowly chipping away at the chains until they give. Prometheus jumps up immediately after freed. "Ah it feels good to be rid of those chains." As they talk they hear a lions roar " I thought this island was Barron. " “It is." just then climbing, a hand reaches the cliff side its massive covered in fur, and its claws have dug into the stone anchoring it. What follows is the beast known as heretic. Lorelei waste no time drawing her bow "What are you doing, what if it means is no harm?” “ Are you a fool, what else could it be doing here.” “It may be a defense mechanism created by my father, to keep me from leaving.” As the creatures stands on two legs Lorelei releases her bow, the arrow flies towards the creature, but an all to familiar event occurs as it deflects off of its skin. Upon seeing this Vulcan says " The Nemean lion." “What?” “ We must flee he grabs both their hands and runs. “ Why are we running the three of us together can kill it." Lorelei protest. “No I know that creature well, my father told me stories of the hero Heracles. The only being to defeat the lion. Like me it's skin is armor only it far surpasses me even Heracles with all his might could not cut the beast.” “ How did he kill it.” “The myth says he shot an arrow into its unarmored mouth.” “Perfect I will do that” says Lorelei with a confident smile. “ Of course that's just the myth, as hera was not so blind. In truth he wrestled it to the ground and suffocated it.” Lorelei grunts angry and ask demandingly. “ Why not do that then?” “because I am not Heracles even he struggled against the beast’s strength, and he is said to be unrivaled in that regard. Besides the beast is no longer the same as before it was merely a lion, now it is also a man.” After hearing that Prometheus smugly mentions. “ If you feel yourself up to the challenge however feel free to face it amazon.” “ Silence coward." In mere seconds the beast has caught up to them. Vulcan tosses the two aside and raise his arms as guard. The beast claws slash deep into his firearm throwing him off the cliff. “No!” shouts Lorelei reaching out her hand as he falls. She raise her blade and heads for the beast. Once she strikes it, the tip of her sword chips and annoyed the beast throws his hand back tossing her aside. It then sets its sights on Prometheus who in response vanishes by turning completely translucent. The beast is far more skilled than given credit for, as it sniffs the air and stairs at the new direction of Prometheus's location.  He then gives chase as Prometheus runs it pounces at him, but just before it can sink its fangs is flung back. The creature looks down to see the chains that bound Prometheus wrapped around its leg on the other end is Vulcan holding it back. The creature pulls and fights slowly dragging Vulcan. Sensing his impending defeat vulcan relinquishes the chains and the creature fumbles forward. He then picks up the other half the chain and as the monster faces him, he strikes him with it like a whip. He keeps up a barrage of lashes although,  they don't appear to harm the beast only annoy it. They Circle each other keeping their distance, the creature drives him to the edge of the mountain and he can maintain there distance no longer. So instead he wraps the chains around his fist and taunts the creature; it goes on all fours and charges at him. He stands his ground and the creature is struck by another arrow in its eyes, it does not harm it but it does distract it. Vulcan strikes the beast with all his might then grabs at its thick mane and throws it off the mountain. Finally they can rest easy. He knows the beast is neither dead nor injured, but it is not a problem for now. Vulcan heads towards a collapsed Lorelei and lifts her cradling her he tells her "Thank you for saving me." she nods telling him there even before falling back asleep. Prometheus comes to congratulate him and offers to carry Lorelei, as he reaches under her though he immediately pulls his hands back screaming. “ agh!" As he is burned by the iron leaking from the slash in vulcans forearm." Prometheus we need to leave now, that creature will return." “Did you not kill it? How could it survive that fall?" “It did trust in me." Prometheus no longer questions it and simply nods his head in agreement. “ Very well then what should we do?” “Out over  the west side is our ship, we must make it there, but scaling this mountain will be difficult with Lorelei like this. Especially with that monster chasing after us." “Then we simply don't scale it.” “What?” after a few minutes Prometheus is again in chains screaming, before long the bird returns at the sight only this time the chains are not truly bounding him. As the bird lands Prometheus wraps the chains around the bird. Vulcan then comes to hold it down as Prometheus lets go the chain and heads toward its head whispering to it, causing a trance like state. The bird then follows all of Prometheus’s commands. They climb aboard its back and it attempts to take off, struggling with Vulcan atop the bird flaps with all its might. Slowly descending from the mountain just mere moments from the ground it loses its strength and crashes. Luckily no one is harmed, the bird however has died of exhaustion. Before long there back on the ship and Vulcan recovers his blade. As they set sail they can hear the lions roar coming from the island. Prometheus begins to laugh. " Well that was fun, I think I'm gonna like being around you guys." Vulcan laughs as well. “ Glad to have your company.” Lorelei is awakened by their laughter at first she is lost but Vulcan then explains what happened. She is pretty upset to hear that she was nearly useless for the battle, a warrior she thought and still she could do nothing. Vulcan tells her not worry and says how without her arrow they might all be dead this helps to quell some of her anger. Just then she spots his new wound tired of seeing him lose blood she cuts up her armor and ties it around his forearm it will not hold forever, but it will offer some relief. Vulcan smiles and thanks her. They then hear the sounds of cloth falling as Prometheus stands nude and exclaims. "So are we doing this or what?" They both respond “No!" and Lorelei throws her boot at his face knocking him over. They're journey continues with a new found ally.

Lawless Chapter 1
Lawless " Annebelle! Annebelle! Get your ass over here and eat your breakfast” A grizzled worn out man shouts as he scoops beans from a pan into a plate. "I'm coming I'm coming !" A playful young voice responds as a little girl walks in the room and takes a seat by the plate. "Oh darn it beans again." Annebelle says disappointed. "You hush now stop complaining and eat your breakfast, before I give it to Rex." The man says as he puts on a silver star pin. "No Rex this is my breakfast." The hound named Rex comes closer as he starts sniffing the source of the aroma Anne's breakfast. " Anne you hurry up and finish that breakfast so we can get you to school and me to the office." " Do I have to go?" She says annoyed. The hound has not given up, she covers her breakfast from Rex's line of sight. "Yes you do now go get yer coat." the man says as he takes her plate. "But I'm not done." She says upset he took her food. He begins to pour the food from the plate to the bowl on the floor. "That's too bad maybe if you'd spent more time eating and less complaining you would of. Now go get yer coat." “Fine." She marches to another room angry with her arms crossed. Some time has passed since then and now a wagon is traveling over a dirt trail carrying Annebelle, Rex, and the older man, as a town comes into view in the distance. "Thomas." The old man ignores her. "Thomas I have a question" he continues to ignore her. "Please." Thomas sighs and reluctantly responds. "What's the question?" Annebelle’s face lights up with glee. "Are you both my mommy and my daddy?" "What." Thomas responds in disbelief shaken by the question almost annoyed. "Darci said Ima bastard since I ain't got a mommy or daddy anymore. So I told her she was dumb cause I do I had you, but then she said you don't count and I told her you do and she's ugly." Thomas closes his eyes as though he were exhausted. "But then she said even if you do count you're only a daddy, and I told her nah ah because you do both mommy and daddy work. Then Miss. Marstin got us both in trouble. So I wanted to know are you my mommy my daddy or both?" Thomas takes a long deep breath as if he were preparing for a long talk. "Kid I ain't yer daddy or yer mommy I'm just Thomas." Annebelle’s face changes from excitement to loss. "Anne you know about yer parents, you know who they were. I'm taking care of you now, but I ain't taking their place. You ain't ma kid and I ain't yer pa." Annebelle sulks more. "Darci's right she's a bitch sure..." Thomas shrugs. "But ya know being a bastard ain't all that bad. A lot of people are bastards I'ma bastard too ya know." Annebelle looks up with a puzzled face. "And if Darci's parents are who she got her manners from I reckon twon’t be long for she's a bastard too." Anne sometimes people are gonna tell you mean things in life, don't mean it's true and even when it is you shouldn't lose sleep over it or be scared of em. The only time you ever need to cry over or even listen to mean words is when they come from someone you love. You're a bastard so what, does that mean something bad about you? A bastard ain't a situation you control you ain't done nothing wrong so don't punish yourself for it, and don't ever let someone else punish you over something you didn't do wrong." Annebelle tucks herself into Thomas's side. "Sides life could always be worse instead of being a bastard you coulda been as ugly as Darci.” Both laugh and Annebelle squeezes Thomas tighter. "Thomas... I love you" Thomas tries to hide it but a small grin comes across his face. "Yeah kid I love you too" thomas pulls the wagon to a halt as they stop by a building with school written on it. A woman walks towards the wagon, she's got bright red hair and a beautiful smile. After seeing her Annebelle smiles and steps off the wagon running into her, she hugs the women. "Miss. Marstin good morning." "Good morning to you too Annebelle" the women responds. She smiles and looks towards Thomas "Good morning to you too sheriff." Thomas tips his hat. "Mornin to you to mam.” Miss. Marstin bends over to talk to Annebelle. " why don't you go run on in now, all the others are inside and class is about to start. Run along say goodbye to the sheriff and head inside. I’ll be in soon just need to have a word with sheriff Cook." Annebelle nods. "Goodbye Thomas." then she runs off to the door. Miss. Marstin steps around the carriage until she ends up Next to Thomas. "What was it you'd like to talk about mam." "Well it's about Annebelle." "She causing problems?" "Well she does but that's not what this is about." "What she not learning fast enough?" "Oh no quite the opposite actually she's my best student, she is ahead of the rest of her class she’s really gifted." " then what seems to be concern." "Well she's so far ahead I don't have much else to teach her." "You saying she's a smart ass you-" "No what I'm saying is she doesn't belong in the class she needs higher academics like a city school, or if you're willing after my normal classes are done I can spend an hour with her teaching her." "That don't sound bad at all go ahead now if you don't mind Ima gonna head to the department." He says with a sour expression." “Mr. Cook I'm afraid you don't understand, Annabelle can't be here anymore not with the normal classes." "So you're saying Annabelle isn't welcome here." "No what I'm saying is she can't be here during my normal classes." "Not much of a difference is there." "Mr. Cook please." "No I can't do it I have a job to do a dangerous job and no one at home to take care of her she needs to stay here." "Mr. Cook I'm sorry but I can't- " Thomas cuts her off. " you serious this girl needs you and you're just gonna turn her away." " Mr. Cook I don't want too but this ain't a daycare. She's not learning nothing I can't keep her here." “look I need to get down to the department and you need to start class we'll talk about this later." Thomas's wagon begins to move "Godammit!! Mr.cook!! Don't walk away we need to talk about this!" Thomas ignores her as she shouts in the background. The scenery changes were in a room. The only things of note are in a large desk a barred cell and two men. The first is a grey haired gentleman sitting down with his hat tipped down as though he were sleeping. The second man is much younger with a childlike appearance  he is sitting backwards in the chair and appears to be talking to the older man. Through the doorway steps Thomas. The younger man seeing Thomas stops his story and acknowledges Thomas's entrance. "Morning sheriff" the young man says. “Mornin buck, mornin Hank" Thomas responds. "What you two Been up to?" Thomas ask as he hangs his coat. The grey haired man doesn't move but begins to speak. "Buck over here bin talking me to death, and I've been pretending to not to listen in the hopes his lip would stop moving. Thank god you showed up when you did, any longer and I might of shot him just so he'd shut the fuck up." Thomas chuckles, Buck gives a dumbfounded look. Buck in retaliation responds. " I don't know what you're talking about people tell me all the time I am a great conversationalist." Hank tips his hat up and his eyes peek out as he says "Would any of those people happen to be your mama." Buck stutters. "Oh oh oh yeah wel-" Thomas laughs and interrupts "Buck as much as I'd love to see the happy couple that is you two argue I got a job to do, so if one of you could fill me in on last night's events so I could fill out the reports." " Already done sheriff " buck responds eagerly. "It was about time the boy learned how to file a report so I taught him last night" Hank says. Thomas seems surprised and ask to see the reports. Buck rushes to grab and eagerly hands them to Thomas as a kid handing over an A+ report card to his parents. Thomas skeptically looks it over then looks at buck who is eagerly anticipating Thomas's response. A minute passes and Thomas finally speaks. " it's good" buck almost jumps as he pumps his right fist and says " I knew it!" "You did good work buck, you too Hank." "Nah this one's all the kid he learnt quick" " well looks like it's gonna be a slow morning." "Sheriff! Sheriff!" A voice shouts. "Sheriff!" The voice grows louder as it draws nearer. Suddenly a man runs in through the doorway panting and hunched over out of breath. All three men turn to face him "What is it Walt?" Thomas ask "Take a breath and speak son." The man takes Thomas's advice takes a deep long breath and frantically speaks in a rush. "It's.... The saloon. It's Richard Wells and his crew I recognized em from the wanted poster... they're in the saloon right now and… an.. and they don't look to happy." Thomas places his hands on his shoulder take a breath then walk over to the saloon and warn everybody nearby not to go in we’ll be there soon." Thomas turns to face Hank and buck as Walter leaves. "Get yer guns and yer cuffs" The men prepare themselves as Thomas grabs his coat and begins to put it on. "Looks like I was wrong this morning's gonna be anythin but slow."

Forge-Born chapters 1-5
Chapter 6 Geneva island of amazons.
Forge-Born                                                  A New Odyssey                     Bang! .... Bang!!..... Bang!!.... The sound of mighty thunder as metal meets metal. Bang!!... Bang!!... Bang!!!... With each clap a flash of light illuminates the dark room. Between each strike we gain a glimpse of a humanoid like figure, only this is no man. The creature is truly a nightmare of an image. No even creature does not explain this being, a more apt description would be god. Hephaestus God of the forge. As Hephaestus strike his hammer against a large mound of steel he begins to speak loudly to himself, as though he were addressing someone else. " It was long ago in a time before man, before beast, before gods, before the entities Gaia and Uranus. When all that existed was Chaos and Darkness. A single spark was all it took and in moments the course of history would change. From this spark formed order, formed Gaia and Uranus. For millennia that spark was not to be seen, until one day the spark flashed once more and mankind had came into existence. Today I hope to be given a chance to see that spark. He places his hands on some object and they begin to glow a bright red & white. The object begins to glow and now we can see it. It appears to be a sculpture of a boy made of steel. Today is the day a new legend is born. With blood of iron and body of steel. The legend of the Forge-Born." Chapter 1 "Father!!" A young voice screams. "father look!" The boy points to the sea. As he does Hephaestus steps onto a beach staring at the boy. Now in the sun we can truly see Hephaestus. He is large taller then any man butt a far cry from a giant. His skin is thick like an elephant with discoloration all over grey white black his skin tone varies in blotches like ink blots. His eyes are sunken and unresponsive as though the intense sunlight doesn't bother him. His mouth is more like a beast with jowls and fangs. His body is strong, or at least it seems that way until you see him resting one palm on cane. As he slowly limps across the beach cane in hand he ask the boy." My boy how many times must we have this conversation." "Oh right heehee" the boy attempts to contain his laughter. Hephaestus somehow seems delighted with the boys laughter rather then angry. "Well what is it, tell me what do you see?" "Out in the water it's some big object with a tarp flowing into the wind." "Oh I see now" Hephaestus grins. "what is it father another sea monster?" "No boy it's a ship." "A ship... wait father does that mean there are humans." "I would most likely assume so." "Wow really?..” The boy gazes at the ship with wanderlust  "Father one day I'd like to be on a boat like that." Hephaestus's face sinks as he mutters "someday I hope you will get the chance."      7 years later         The forest is silent when suddenly a loud boom goes off. As the smoke clears we here a man coughing."Damn seems I was bit off on the ratios." As the man begins to stamp out small embers we notice the face is familiar to that of the young boy. Only now as a man he is something more akin to a warrior. His face is Fairly well, no Adonis but easy on the eyes. What stands out most though are his ember eyes. As the man is finished stamping out the fire a loud voice is heard throughout the forest. "Vulcan where are you what manner of messes have you made today?" Shit. the man responds. "Nothing to worry about father I've got it all under control." Hephaestus retorts "funny you said the same thing last time and now Pygmas has no eyebrow." The man's reaction is one of embarrassment. “Well whatever it is it can wait. I need your help on the forge.” After walking an acre Vulcan nears a mountain with a house along the side down below is a large cave that Vulcan enters. In it we see Hephaestus hard at work hammering down some item on an anvil. Surrounding him are 5 giants with one eye who all seem to be busy with their smithing. Finally Vulcan nears Hephaestus "Good now take this and hold it steady around the horn." Vulcan follows the gods instructions and grabs a circular object and presses it firmly against the edge of the Anvil horn. As he does this Hephaestus grasps a large hammer and starts beating against it "another shield huh." Vulcan remarks."Maybe , if you hold it still enough." As the two work together on the shield they begin to banter back and forth until Hephaestus ask a question. " So Vulcan what was it this time another one of your science inventions." Vulcan responds quickly speaking as soon as Hephaestus finishes his last syllable" yes I'm onto something amazing I just need to run some more test." "Could you use any help." Vulcan ponders his answer for a few seconds." Honestly I could, but I really want to try this one on my own father" “Oh can't wait to get out of your old man's shadow ehh boy." Hephaestus grins as he says it. "That's not it I just want to prove this to myself; to prove that I can become a builder like you." For a moment Hephaestus pauses then continues to beat on the shield " I'm very proud of you don't worry someday you will become an even greater craftsman then me." Vulcan almost cries at those words. All his life he's never admired anyone more than Hephaestus, he knew of the other gods yet the one he was always amazed by was Hephaestus. His father was strong willed and wise. Even while being a god he was humble and never thought himself above any creature and to top it all off he was an amazing craftsman. He could build anything : jewelry, trinkets, mechanisms, coliseums, and yes even weapons and armor of unimaginable quality. Suddenly they hear a loud bell. "They're here" Hephaestus says. "Who" ask Vulcan." The ones picking up this shield. As Hephaestus finishes putting on the last of the grips on the shield he tells Vulcan to greet his guest upstairs. Now inside the upper floor he sees a man draped in black and a younger one draped in purple and black he recognizes the first man but has no clue as to the second. While standing there pondering the mans identity Hephaestus walks in from behind him ah hades it's been some time uncle. Glad to see you the man shrouded in jet black cloak and corporeal darkness speaks and as he does so it fills the room with dread. "yes same for you Hephaestus  and you as well Vulcan." Vulcan pushes his curiosities aside and realizes his rudeness" Apologies lord hades" hades smiles although even though it is innocent to him on the outside it looks sinister" No need for apologies Vulcan you are family after all." Hades points to the smaller individual beside him donning similar attributes only in a purple shade" Excuse me allow me to introduce my son regon. It's his shield we've come to collect today." "Ah good to finally meet you Regon I've heard a great many things of you." Says Hephaestus, Regon then responds "As well I you smith. However I must admit I've heard nothing of you having a son Vulcan was it. Vulcan clenches his fist as though he's just been threatened and prepared to fight for his life. Hades speaks up "Regon do not pry. The smith is a powerful ally and respectful man leave it alone." Regon nods silently. " come with us the shields downstairs the cyclops are testing it." Hades is then reminded of something." Speaking of cyclops Hephaestus are you waxing them now?We ran into Pygmas on lookout and he seems to be missing the hair on his brow." Ha!Vulcan immediately covers his mouth trying to contain his laughter, you can see his body quiver as he chuckles with his right hand over his mouth and left hand to his side. The party just ignores him and heads towards the shield. When finding himself alone he uses the opportunity to break away and head towards his own lab deep in the forest. He has work to do otherwise he would have stayed. He rather enjoys hades as he seems to be the only God that respects his father and regularly pays him visits, he's also the only God his father allows him to speak to or come into contact with. In fact as a young boy when hades and Hephaestus were deep in conversation he would allow him to play with Cerberus. He doesn't know why the other gods hate his father or why they can't know of his own existence, but he came to realize long ago through his father and the cyclops stories, that the gods weren't the merciful or flawless beings they're portrayed as. While Vulcan fires up a forge in his workshop Hephaestus is back home speaking with hades. "Thank you again smith for the work you've done." " No need hades you practically keep me employed and I rather enjoy our talks. Not to mention you've kept the identity of Vulcan to yourself and for that I owe you greatly. I'd rather he not get wrapped up in the world of the Divine and immortals. "Speaking of that Hephaestus did you know where Zeus was headed today?" " No I'm afraid I have not contacted Olympus in years. I'm sure you're aware of my strained relations with our family." " Quitewell smith, then it pains me to say but I felt I should give you warning today Zeus visit's the Moirai.” The air turns hostile as a terrified Hephaestus exclaims "The sisters of fate! When hades?" " I do not know nephew I just felt the need to tell you so you might prepare yourself. I will be taking my leave I cannot interfere with my brothers affairs, however I felt I should warn you. Sorry that is all I could do." As he says this hades and Regon fall into a dark abyss. "Thank you hades for warning me, you've done enough." As hades disappears. Hephaestus shouts VUUULLCANNN!!! The words sound loud and carry deep into the Forest. Moments before this Vulcan was leaving his workshop and heading back home. "Finally!" he says to himself "A sword that isn't worthless." Vulcan raises an clothed item into the air, his face covered in ash and carbon with a grin as wide as the crescent moon. Vulcan thinks maybe with this he can go out to the world of man. Sword at his side he can become an adventurer and see the world. With this he wouldn't even have to fear the gods. Suddenly he hears his father cry out for him more panicked then ever before something is wrong just as he turns and pushes off the ground to run a flash of light comes down cutting through the air colliding with the earth, with a tremendous crackle and boom knocking him to the ground. This is thunder and what follows thunder is destruction. As he looks up at the ravaged earth in front of him he sees him. The King of gods, Power incarnate, Clade in lightning ZEUS and his eyes scream bloodlust. Chapter 2 abomination Gobsmacked and in awe. Vulcan lays they're paralyzed unable to run with frozen feet, not even able to find his voice to scream or speak. So shocked he even forgets how to breath Vulcan lies helpless. For years he's heard of the gods of there amazing power and heavy auras but he never expected anything like this. The pressure emanating from this god is like an ocean filling the air dragging him to the bottom helpless against it. He now truly understands what places gods above men. Lying there deprived of oxygen he begins to lose the strength in his body, but just as his eyes begin to close he catches sight of a familiar figure walking towards them with a cane." Vulcan did I not warn you of the presence of gods. It appears you'll have to learn now, focus your mind and will. Remember to not give in to a greater force, push back on the aura with your own and most importantly hide your fear.” With those words Vulcan begins to fall in and out of consciousness. As he begins to practice his father's teachings the weight on his chest gets lighter. Zeus and Hephaestus stand there watching the young man. To the world outside this sight is unexplainable and would go without understanding, but to those intertwined in the Divine this is nothing new. Thousands have died from sheer presence of the Divine alone. Gods can intensify or diminish the aura they place forward. Although many wouldn't know it from the current sight Hephaestus knows all to well Vulcan is gifted in this form of combat via godly presence. Against any average Devine being he would have already returned to strength but this is Zeus. Hephaestus stands there torn over his sons predicament, alas there's nothing he can do. He could fight Zeus in an attempt to stop the overwhelming pressure he exudes, but not only would he lose that fight in order to do so he would have to unleash his aura as well and with his and Zeus's combined pressures Vulcan would not survive. All he can do is stand and watch his son cling to life. Finally there's a breakthrough both men sense it a will of iron refusing to be crushed by the weight. Vulcans eyes open as his body rises like an undead corpse, gasping for air. Hephaestus is pleased Zeus however has not lost his angry demeanor. As Vulcan slowly makes his way to his feet with his arm pressed against the ground for support shaking, he can't believe it Zeus didn't lift a finger and he nearly died just from being in his presence. Hephaestus steps in front of Vulcan shielding him from Zeus's gaze before asking "what is it you are doing here Zeus?" Zeus responds with furry in his voice." Watch your tongue Hephaestus It is your king you are speaking too." Hephaestus bites his tongue and waits for a response. Zeus caring not for the concerns of Hephaestus waits some time before responding "I am here regarding a prophecy given to me by the Moirai." Hephaestus hesitates and thinks of his question before speaking. " May I ask what this prophecy is exactly." " The sisters have informed you have done the unthinkable. You have broken the greatest rule. You created new life where there was none. I am king of all none but me shall be allowed to create life. Hephaestus was I not lenient when the sisters gave me the prophecy years ago of your betrayal" Hephaestus interjects "Zeus, father I told you there was no betrayal I would never forge a weapon to kill you." Mid sentence he is cut off by Zeus" How dare you call me that you are no son of mine I casted you out of Olympus I showed leniency and even now you mock me with that abomination behind you." Vulcan is perplexed could he be referring to him. What's this on about Hephaestus creating life he understood all to well of the rule of life how none is supposed to create it not even gods for such life would go against nature itself. He knows such an act could never be forgiven and that the creature could not be allowed to continue living. Still why does he speak of him that way Vulcan is no creation. He was told he was the son of Hephaestus and a lower God. He knows nothing of his true origin. Many might be confused with this statement believing Gods to have created life many times however there are rules firstly life cannot be made where it did not previously exist you may turn a tree into a mortal however you may not turn stone to man. Two if it is made from nothing it may not have will nor mind of its own hence golems and lastly it may not be given the ability to pass on to a new generation. In creating Vulcan Hephaestus broke this covenant incurring the wrath of Zeus. "Your creation neither man nor God this creature does not belong in this world. Step aside and allow me to destroy it and I may be merciful to you afterwards. " Vulcan's heart clenches itself. To think the one who stands above would desire his death what could he do he couldn't possibly fight and hope to win. Run how can he outrun lighting. As Vulcan's heart races a comforting voice reassures him.  "Calm down my son no harm shall come to you. You have as much a right to life as any living creature and I will defend that right with my own life if I must." As he says those endearing and heartfelt words he stares at Zeus and says "I challenge you for the right to rule Olympus on the grounds of my blood as one of the twelve seats." Zeus grits his teeth seething with anger the surrounding environment begins to shutter. Hephaestus has invoked the right to challenge only a shameful God and weak ruler would refuse. Very well I will kill you first, then the abomination. I shall return with an audience at sundown to oversee. After Zeus leaves Vulcan drops to the floor exhausted. After a few hours the sun begins to set Vulcan wakes up at home. Suddenly it all comes back to him he leaps out of bed screaming no. Hephaestus comes and hugs him telling him to calm himself. Vulcan looks up at him tears in his eyes and ask why he challenged Zeus he cannot hope to win. Hephaestus looks down at him and says " Because you are my son." "But I'm not I heard him I'm not your son I'm not human not God I'm..I shouldn't exist." "Vulcan weather or not you should have existed isn't important the fact remains you do exist you feel you bleed you cry and laugh. I can no longer lie to you so I will tell you the truth Vulcan. Many years ago I lived with the Olympians at first I wanted to be one to be accepted by them but I never was for that I grew to despise them I became angry and vain and did many things I'm no longer proud of. Eventually in time I began to forgive them and place my heart at ease after that I was able to see the evil of the gods and there indifference to the plights of man. I pleaded with them and begged them to help the humans to show mercy, but alas my words fell on deaf ears. The gods were a conceited lot but still they were my family and I loved them and I had no intention to take my family to war. So instead I took up an oath of pacifism I vowed to never participate in there wars or the wars of man and that I would never forge another weapon. When Zeus demanded weapons I refused this deeply angered him he felt as though it was a challenge against his authority which had him grow paranoid of my betrayal. So he sought out the sisters of fate for guidance on the matter. That was when they informed him of a vision they had that I would forge a new weapon one that would kill him. Opun hearing these words he attempted to end my existence, but perhaps some small ounce of fatherly affection remained because he did not deliver the finishing blow; instead he banished me from Olympus and barred me from ever forging another weapon. In time I found this island of cyclops other creatures resented by their father for there imperfect figures. I became like a mentor to them taught them to forge and communicate. Still though life was lonely I missed my family even though they were cruel and unkind. I became so lonely I came up with an idea. What I was about to do was blasphemy to the highest degree. I was about to break the supreme rule of the Divine. Life shall never be created from nothing only Zeus himself may ever create new life. This law stands above all others the punishment for breaking it is death. In my lost state I began to work on my finest craft ever I would forge his bones of steel his blood of hot iron and his flesh of copper & bronze. Still such a task is no mere small feat. Although the law exist even without it none could perform this feat. Creating new life is tricky when Zeus Aphrodite and I created woman we nearly abandoned the efforts but some force greater than our understanding aided us. For you it was the same try as I might you remained a statue of metal. I don't know how or why but somehow something breathed life into you my son and on that day you came to be a creature born of the forge.” "But that means I am an abomination."  "Look at me son it is true you are neither God nor man. However you are no monster you deserve life just as any man. Here I found this beside you" he hands him the clothed item from before “I found it beside I had hoped you would not mind I had a look at it." Vulcan removes the cloth reveal a jade tinted blade. It's beautiful almost like an ornament. He's almost too afraid to ask but somehow finds the courage. “What did you think?” "Interesting indeed your work with a blade is truly remarkable however it is undeniably yours the work of a young man."  " What's that mean." Ask Vulcan "It's truly exceptional and Finely forged, incredibly sharp and well made. Only it's not suitable for combat. It's to be expected your young and inexperienced in war. Your blade is impractical it's appearance is a beauty and like that of a proper heroes blade but it would never be used In combat. You see a smith must not only make the strongest weapon he must also take into account the warrior wielding it and its purpose. Sometimes you have a smaller warrior so a large or long blade is impractical sometimes they have armor or shields so a sharp edge is useless other times it simply does not feel right from the grip or isn't designed to swing according to the Warriors method." With the more he describes the more Vulcan sulks which Hephaestus takes notice of. "Don't be disappointed Vulcan you are a fine craftsman and the blade is incredibly durable and sharp it shows how well your technique and skill at the forge is. This lack of foresight was on me I taught you all the secrets to the forge save  weapons. I wish I had more time to teach you but I'm afraid our time is up the sun is setting. Take this he throws a bag at Vulcans feet. What is this for are we going to run. No boy you will I will stay here and fight. But why we can bo-- I gave my word I challenged him now I can not go back on that. A man is nothing without his word. Humans taught me that and hopefully they can teach you the same. Go there's a ship waiting for you at the north beach. Inside that bag is a map you will head to Geneva a small island not far from here where you will meet your guide. You already know how to read the stars, but take this it's something I've been working on It will help keep you going in the right direction. Hephaestus shows him what appears to be a primitive compass. But father I can help you or maybe I can offer myself to Zeus you shouldn't have to die for nothing. No. Please! dammit boy I...fine you want to help. Hephaestus drops the compass. pick that up we will have use for it later. As Vulcan reaches down Hephaestus strikes him over the back of his head breaking his cane over it. He looks down at the unconscious Vulcan then back at his broken cane and mutters "You've got a hard head boy." He proceeds to pick him up and throw him outside into the arms of a brow less cyclops. "Pygma take care of the boy." Pygma nods and vanishes with Vulcan into the forest. As Hephaestus makes his way down the stairway he hears Zeus land and call for him Hephaestus show yourself I've come for your challenge with witnesses Apollo Hera and Athena. As he reaches the end of the staircase he heads to a corner of his workshop towards a locked trunk. Hephaestus! Zeus shouts I hope you have not suddenly realized you're fear and become to cowardly to face me. A golden draped man by Zeus speaks up "Father I must admit picking on a crippled and feeble old man does not sit well with me must this continue." Now one of the women by Zeus interjects "Careful Apollo the smith may be weak in body and his mind may also have confliction, but he is a seat on Olympus  for a reason even after being cast out. Father I beg you reconsider the smith would pose a great loss to us" "Silence Athena the smith has laid his bed... but if it will put you all at ease, I will make it quick.. " quick huh..." The sound of Heavy metal rattling follows the voice. "Perhaps you have forgotten just what a battle is like Zeus" the voice comes from the cave as a grinning Hephaestus steps out clad in armor from head to toe an arsenal of weapons on his person. He stands with one hand holding a large spear pressed into the ground almost as if replacing his cane the other hand holding a flail attached to a long chain. It's as though he were a gladiator of great legend. Chapter 3 Even Gods Bleed The other gods stand in shock of the sight before them. Zeus is enraged at the sight of Hephaestus in armor. "What is the meaning of this smith? I thought this was duel among gods." Unfazed he responds " It is"  “then why do you sully it with trinkets.” “Father you seem to misunderstand nowhere does it say armor or weapons are forbidden.” “I would think your pride wouldn't allow such a poor display.” “ Yes pride would stop most men however men are foolish a warrior knows the battlefield is not to be treated as a playground things like pride matter not in battlegrounds. You do what you must to win to survive to protect the ones you care for. Today you threatened my son and I would swallow my pride before I ever let you bring him harm. Come father today one of us shall die here on this battlefield.” After recognizing the danger Athena voices her concern. “Zeus be wise this is the smith and those are his hand crafted weapons I recognize them this fight will be dangerous nothing requires you to face him like this.” “ Silence Athena very well smith I shall teach you you're toys mean nothing before true power” as he says this Zeus hurls a thunderbolt. The smith slams down the spear into the ground in its path after nearing the spear the lightning draws to the staff discharging into the ground. Hephaestus spins his flail before throwing it at Zeus smashing against his face it flings Zeus clear across the field. “Father your power is what gives you strength but me my gifts of the forge lend me strengths I could never attain on my own I may be old & broken but do not believe me  helpless by any means." Zeus snarls at Hephaestus the smith grips his spear and with his good leg pushes off the ground leaving a crater at the point of liftoff. Zeus takes hold of the spear catching it as it pierces him. Only allowing it to penetrate a mere inch of flesh, then creating a burst of lighting that sends Hephaestus flying into the mountain behind them. After coming to his feet Zeus takes the spear and breaks it over his knee Hephaestus stairs at him with a fierce eyes “as I said Hephaestus toys” he says as he drops the broken spear. Then in almost an instant Zeus stands in front of Hephaestus still processing what just occurred Hephaestus is unable to react as Zeus buries his fist into his face following that blow is a flurry of strikes each more powerful than the last. Even fully clad in armor seems to mean nothing as Zeus's power does not appear to be diminished in any way. Hephaestus knows the strength of this armor well he once tested it against against the might of a tsunami and yet not even a scratch, but here it may as well be simple cloth. Finally after growing tired Zeus ends his onslaught he stands menacingly over the bruised and bloody Hephaestus. In that moment it what appeared to be a a man clinging to his last bits of life Hephaestus pulled his hammer from his side gripping the handle firmly he raised it to the air his arm shaking barely able to hold it. In this moment tears came to his eyes as he thought of his son, he knew it had not been enough time he could not die yet. So with every ounce of his being he whispered one word" Forge" he followed those words by striking his hammer down on the mountain behind. In a mere moment after contact a mammoth sized steel gauntlet erupted from the wall punching Zeus. Forcing him out of the mountain falling to the ground below with a large thud. Zeus and the other gods look up to the mountain to see Hephaestus axe in hand looking down upon them. He jumps down to Zeus as he sees this he respond by hurling lighting at him but Hephaestus pushes down with his axe splitting the bolt in two the landing all his weight on Zeus then grabbing at his shoulders he opens his large jowls and begins spewing fire and magma. Through the magma reaches Zeus's hand wrapping around Hephaestus throat stopping the red bile. With the fire gone we now see Zeus's face angry covered with burns and scorch marks. With his free hand he strikes Hephaestus but Hephaestus returns with a blow of his own forcing Zeus to relinquish his grip back and forth the gods trade blows however this is no equivalent exchange as Hephaestus strikes get weaker and far more infrequent, sometimes taking two or three blows before delivering his own. Hephaestus then grips the blade at his side and slices at Zeus's leg. Zeus responds but not quickly enough to avoid injury just to avoid a more serious strike. He then takes a few paces back as Hephaestus raise his sword at him. “Aiming for my legs eh truly a warriors cunning.” Zeus mentions. “Well I have to do something to slow you down after all my leg isn't quite as spry as yours.” Hephaestus points to his weak leg trembling at the strain. Zeus stairs at both legs then comments
“It's quite incredible how you've been able to fight while balancing on one leg.” “I've had practice. Tell me father would you reconsider allowing my son to live if I surrendered now and agreed to forge for you once again.” “I've already told you smith you're no son of mine and that abomination is no son of yours I cannot allow such a being to exist that challenges the very nature of the universe itself.” “ You mean you could not allow anything to exist that cannot owe it's very existence to you. This has nothing to do with gods the boy could never hope to challenge your place in the universe his power is not Devine. He's closer to man then God. Why should his life be invalid simply because he is neither, because his very existence is a blight on your dominance over this world.” “ Hephaestus  before I kill You I will rip out you're heathenish tongue.” “I see then” he stares at Hera and the other gods “mother brother sister please know that I tried to seek a peaceful solution I did not simply seek bloodshed.” As the blood began to drip from his palms they begin to glow and the blood begins to boil and burn. As Hephaestus breathes embers fill the the very air he exhales. He grabs his hammer then places one hand to the floor and again he utters the words " forge" instantly multiple large blades protrude from the ground aiming for Zeus. In retaliation he unleashes a wave of thunder atomizing the blades. From his side appears Hephaestus his open hand reaches for Zeus's face igniting the very air it passes through. Zeus however manages to avoid it Hephaestus quickly changes tactics shifting his position using his hammer he delivers a backhanded strike smashing Zeus's nose. After catching sight of this Hephaestus remarks "it has been a long time since I have seen you bleed father." Chapter 4  Hephaestus God of the forge Out far off the coast of the island floats a small ship in which Vulcan still lays unconscious. As the battle between gods rages on in the distant island, the sounds of the clash awaken him. He awakens unaware of where he is he looks around surprised to see himself surrounded by water. After getting his bearings he realizes he must have been knocked out and placed on this ship. The sounds of the battle shift his focus to the island. His chest Tightens as even out here he can feel the gods crushing auras. He thinks of the struggle his father must be facing, without hesitation he turns the ship around and heads for the island only by some act of universe or perhaps a god, a gust of wind catches his sails pulling him further out to sea. All he  can do is watch the island get smaller and smaller in the distance for he is now at the mercy of the winds and the sea. Back on the island the tide of battle has once again shifted as Zeus fueled by rage at his own blood ferociously beat down Hephaestus. However Hephaestus seems to be pleased. The smile over Hephaestus faces further infuriates Zeus prompting more brutality. Zeus doesn't understand so he ask " Why do you smile Hephaestus once I've ended your existence I will chase your abomination. None can escape me for I see all.” “ Hah you fool father you've become so arrogant in the time since I've seen you I'm fully aware of your sight and that of mothers which is why I gifted him a device imbued with magic capable of hiding him from you.” “ What. You lie smith.” “You know me well Zeus you know me to be capable of such feats.” Arghhh! Zeus lets out a howl as he summons thunder to strike Hephaestus. Leaving a giant scare in Hephaestus chest. Hephaestus however has accepted death and does not fear it. He thinks of his long life of his ups and downs his younger years. Hephaestus was not like other gods he wasn't born perfect. Angry at Zeus for having Athena with another women Hera set out to make a child of her own with no help from any man. She would give birth to what the world would see as a monster. At his birth Hephaestus was already horribly disfigured and ugly he resembled more the creatures of Tartarus then the Adonis's of Olympus. Still his mother loved him then. She named him Hephaestus after one of her other lovers. Zeus however could not stand him, while he gazed at the hideousness and imperfection of Hephaestus it drove him mad not only was he monstrous in form but his body was frail and weak smaller then most babies and barely clinging to life. He could never call such a pathetic creature one of his pantheon his existence was a smear on all the gods and his name. Still he chose to accept the child as his own for the sake of Hera but made sure to keep him out of view of the world. Every Night however the sounds of his cries would drive him mad as it only reminded him of his failure. This continued for some time until one night Zeus awoke in a fit of rage, Hera hearing the babies cries awoke to find Zeus standing at the cliff side of Olympus holding the infant. She pleaded and begged him not too but he ignored her cries as he threw the child with all his might down into the sea and rocks below. Zeus now believing himself to be rid of the blight returned to sleep. Only fate would still not be so kind for Hephaestus. The frail boy miraculously survived the fall. Only his body was mangled his leg broken beyond repair the infant was in pure agony. He cried but his howls were swallowed by the ocean as he began to drown. For sure he would have died had this sight had naught of caught the attention of a nearby water nymph.  The nymph dragged the child to an underground cave under mount Olympus here he nursed the child back to health. After a few years the child had been lucky enough to to survive and grow healthier and more hardy a complete contrast to his frail form as a child sadly however the leg could not be saved. A pity thought the nymph if not for that the child would have grown to be an unrivaled gladiator his physical prowess far surpassed any being before him. Sadly however he will never be able to walk without support. How cruel the gods are thought the nymph. More years had passed and Hephaestus grew interested in the forge after years of isolation for fear of Zeus actions should he found out the boy was alive and the nymph saved him the nymph pleaded for Hephaestus to remain in the cave. Owing everything to him Hephaestus agreed to stay they're till he reached maturity. Finally after a decade more he set out into the world it was not long after he made a name for himself as a smith. Eventually one of his pieces of jewelry made its way to the gods they demanded the name of the maker Hephaestus they replied. The gods were shocked although not relieved they still did not care for Hephaestus even in time hera began to regret ever having conceived him. Still they admired his craft. And order him forge items of equal beauty for them. Hermes was sent however upon hearing this Hephaestus refused still angered over the gods treatment of him and the loss of his leg. Request after request was sent and refused until the gods began to threaten him. Angry Hephaestus came up with a plan he sent Hera a beautifully crafted chair all the gods gathered around to see. Hera loved this chair it's only flaw once seated she could not unseet herself for sometime the gods laughed at Hephaestus joke only after hours had passed and Hera could not move they realized the severity Hephaestus had trapped Hera. None could release her not even Zeus so they sent gods down to ask Hephaestus free her they asked kindly he refused so in response they sent Aires God of war to threaten him but Hephaestus was different from the others he held no fear. In fact it was Aires who was shaken upon return to Olympus. Still the gods the pleaded until eventually he was offered a seat on Olympus and the hand of Aphrodite. Pleased Hephaestus released Hera. In the coming years Hephaestus would grow to have many more stories most erased or forgotten to history. In time his anger at the world grew until one day he would realize his faulty and the corruption of the gods. In time because of this he began to pity his family. He begged and pleaded for them to see there errors, but still no god respected him. Only his uncle hades also scorned and cheated by the gods would see the true worth and nobility of Hephaestus in time the gods grew more cruel to mankind and he grew more compassionate to them. This was the tragic and beautiful trajectory of his life. Even now as his father stands beating him to death Hephaestus cries for him for his family for humanity for his son. He forgave the gods long ago for they're mistreatment of him for the hundred unspoken stories of the wrongs they've done him the stories he was too ashamed  to tell his son. Hephaestus lead a sad life however he would do it again for all the brief glimpses of happiness he experienced. He regrets not being around to see his son grow and enter the world but he knows the wisdom he imparted on him would make him into a fine man. He knows one day he will find love and happiness and for that dying here right now would be a faire price to pay. With one last breath Hephaestus speaks once more to Zeus “father I forgive all the gods cruelties to me I forgive Aphrodite and I forgive Aires I forgive you mother and even now as you take my last breath from me I forgive you father. I know in your heart you do not hate you simply feel this is the only way to maintain order I know it brings you no pleasure or relief to kill me which is why you sent the nymph Zeus looks shocked. I know you feel responsible for maintaining order and that you've refused to shed tears for me not out of lack of compassion. I can see in your eyes this pains you far more than me.” He pauses needing to take a breath due to his condition. “But even though I love you all I cannot condone your actions you have been abusive to the humans cruel even. You have ruined lives and dictated them you may be gods but you have no right to rule over them. You toy with their emotions and force them to submit. Which is why I could not stand idly by any longer. The sisters were right I did forge a new weapon but not to slay you to defeat you to free humanity from the plague of the gods. For it is no mere weapon, he will break their chains. Cast the gods from their thrones. He is blood of iron and body of steel he is forge born he is my son and the last hope of not just humanity but of the gods as well, because he won't just save humanity from the gods he will save you from yourselves. He will open your hearts to love. Father he is my last gift to you.” And with those last words the brimming glow emanating from Hephaestus fades as he lies unresponsive broken bloody not the death deserved of a man of piece. Off in the distance still fighting against the winds Vulcan senses one of the auras weakening growing more frantic he struggles greater even cursing the sea and winds until finally the aura disappears completely. Even without eyes he knows all too well what has occurred. He drops to his knees in tears giving up his struggle as he howls at the loss of his most precious person. Today he is all alone in the world. A freak a monster an outcast with no place to call home. He kneels there weeping allowing the winds to drag him further out to sea. Chapter 5 a new odyssey Out in the oceans alone sits a young Vulcan his eyes red and sunken. He lies there motionless and and unresponsive to the world he is dried out and his stomach growls. A near few feet from him stand his supplies within its content are food and water for a week but still it remains untouched. For days he wrestled with his grief he was angry at Zeus at the gods for allowing it and mostly at himself for being helpless. It has been five days now since his father's death had it not been for his inhuman attributes he would have succumbed to dehydration already. However the effects of it have begun to take hold his mind is hazy and he sees ghost which are not there. The Sun's light has reddened his skin and dried his lips so much they're cracked and bleeding. A little bird flies onto the edge of his ship. It stares at him for sometime analyzing him almost as though he held intelligence. Finally after some time while lost in thought he heard a voice “Vulcan.”  Vulcan looks around but sees nothing . “Vulcan” again he hears it he begins to believe it is perhaps the sea playing tricks on him. The bird now flutters to him landing on his knee. He stares at it and it opens its beak and and the words “Vulcan have you gone deaf.” He cant believe his ears or eyes he believes the effects of the ocean and dehydration are now at play. What bird can talk he thought. So he ignored it believing it to be in his head the bird continues to call him. The bird even begins to peck at him unfortunately for the bird however although Vulcan looks human his skin is actually like copper and bronze  in fact as a child he often wrestled with snakes and beast thinking them to be playing all the while they were attempting to eat him but their teeth could not pierce his flesh nor could they crush him. In time the bird gives up flying away Vulcan believes it to truly have been a vision until ploop a birds droppings fall on his head he immediately sticks his head in the water to clean the feces off him. When he returns to the ship he spots the bird on his deck. He bears his teeth as he scowls “why you little shit I'm gonna roast you and have bird for dinner.” “Serves you right for ignoring someone.” Okay now he knows he's not crazy this bird is really talking to him “so you're real.” “ As real as the shit in your head now listen close if you don’t want me to shit on your head again” Vulcan nods his head. “What are you doing boy?” “Why I'm doing Nothing.” “ Exactly. You lost your father not your life” “ You know about my father.” “I know a great many things boy.” “ Who are you.” “ That does not concern you, you're actions however do concern me. It has been five days since your father's passing and yet you sit here throwing away the life he sacrificed his for.” Vulcan hears those words as they echo into his heart. Tears once again well up. “No boy no more tears the time for tears are over now is the time for hope.” “What's there to be hopeful for I've lost everything. And I'm currently being hunted by the most powerful being in the universe at any moment he so chose he could summon lightning upon me to drown me in this ocean" “ If he can boy then why does he not do so. To play with you, perhaps the gods are very cruel. Or perhaps you're father was far smarter then you gave him credit for. On that device he gave you to guide you” Vulcan stares at the compass he's been clutching on one hand. “On that contraption is not only a guide but a ward one powerful enough to hide you from the gods. They can't kill you because they cannot find you.” “Very well bird you have erased one concern but what about my first what have I to live for now.” “ You have you to live for boy you can now see the world as you've always wanted you can gain justice for you're father.” “ Justice hah” Vulcan laughs hysterically “you mean me to kill Zeus God of Thunder. I truly despise Zeus as well as the other Olympians but I was never taught to seek vengeance doing so would only tarnish my father's legacy. And even if I desired the death of the gods what could I do against them for centuries man has been at they're mercy why because they are loyal and subservient no it is because they are weak and incapable of fighting the gods.” “ True they are but still many have tried..” “ and many have failed” he cut off the bird “failure is the first stop on the path to success.” At those words Vulcan resend so to his mind to a time he was a young boy at the forge he sat there with a crudely made helmet weeping. When along came Hephaestus he stood over him and asked why he cried Vulcan responded because he had failed it was nothing compared to Hephaestus work he wasn't gifted at the forge. Hephaestus stayed silent for a moment then walked away. After a few minutes he returned to the weeping boy and dropped something at his feet that made a clang sound as it hit the floor Vulcan stared at the object unsure of white it was it was a piece of metal with a strange shape and varying thickness Vulcan finally gave up and asked what is it. Hephaestus chuckled and said “it was meant to be a chalice for wine.” Vulcan is puzzled now that he was told he can make out a rough shape of a chalice the, but it is so badly deformed and tempered he can hardly accept it. “That Vulcan was my first ever forged item. Like you I wept only it was for three whole days I began to think about my failure about how much that cup and I shared in common how my parents believed me to be a failure and casted me out. When I thought of that I stopped my tears because I realized I wasn't a failure I didn't deserve to be tossed aside and I would prove that I would forge the greatest chalice ever. Time after time I tried again and again to make a chalice one after another they failed some worse than others, some ashamedly worst then the one that had come before it but with each I learned I grew and one day I had accomplished my task it came out perfect. Vulcan failure is merely the first step in the path to success.” With those words Vulcans tears fade and a smile crept across his face. Then almost mirroring the child Vulcan In the presents eyes were given new life the somber expression was replaced with a confident smile as he took to his feet and ran towards his supplies terrifying the bird nearly crushing it as it screamed hey watch it. He took large gulps of water and food nearly choking himself he lowered the sail and steered the Ritter towards the direction of north on the compass. He turned one time to face the direction of his island even though he could not see it and shouted he turned back and thanked the bird only it had disappeared. He laughed Unsure if hid had been real or not but it did not matter because it had given him what he needed now with life in his eyes he scans his map and compass and set sail for Geneva. And thus began a new odyssey.
