there is a huge difference between criticizing an institution and criticizing individual behavior. i can criticize the makeup industry without criticizing the 14 year old girl who uses concealer because she’s self-conscious about her acne; i can criticize the plastic surgery industry without vilifying the woman who decided to get a nose job after two decades of pointed comments and bullying. it is intellectually dishonest to respond to an institutional criticism as if it were a personal attack; on the flip side, it is cruel and unnecessary to leverage personal attacks in the name of institutional criticism

if i see one (1) more person respond to a perfectly reasonable beauty-industry-critical sentiment with “but i personally enjoy eyeshadow. why are you attacking people who like eyeshadow :(” or “exactly, all women who wear makeup are miserable and brainwashed” i am going to climb a tree and bite the top of it

the main reason or at least a big reason dean was so … unreceptive to that idea was not bc he genuinely thinks that it’s selfish but rather bc it’s an idea so far pushed down he never even allowed himself to THINK it .

Dreams were not a thing for him. Certainly none beyond those of his father’s approval. So dreams of women, beer and killing monsters were okay to dream of. The highest dream he ever lets himself express is his need to have Sam with him throughout it all. Cause his father clearly approves of that but since its already part of his job description as the eldest son.

And that’s also another reason: With all the other things - no matter how much he genuinely liked this things - he was chasing an addiction; coping with his trauma and leaning into a stereotype he thought he has to fulfill.

Sam - no matter how much it was part of his “job”- he genuinely not only loves but genuinely likes as a person! He likes spending time with him as a brother, as a hunter AND as a person! In top of that: Sam is someone who understands him, who he can be genuine with and not fear being laughed at or worse ignored and dismissed again. Sam was at least the part that he genuinely could be somewhat himself with.

So in those lights hearing Sam say he wanted to leave: Dean is taken back! Not saying I agree with it cause obviously not I completely support OPs standpoint ! But I think it’s both the fact that Sam not only allows himself to dream of leaving but is also not afraid to say it AND ON TOP OF THAT the personal aspect of being okay, that it could mean leaving Dean behind for it. Dean felt angry that he never got to dream this big, that he cannot allow himself to do so and that Sam would leave him. And he cannot be angry at his father cause that would go against orders AND would have to question everything which is also against orders. So instead he gets angry at Sam and it all boils down to him feeling forgotten thus leading him to think of Sam as selfish when that is not at all what he wants to say.

Sorry OP this got longer than I thought and I know you didn’t say anything at all about Dean my thoughts just immediately specialised towards him. The point is: yess !! You’re allowed to want to leave an abusive situation and following through with that! In fact m: please do!! Easy said than done but please do!

Fully believe that Sam vocally wishing he had a normal/different life and upbringing is not even a little bit selfish but even if it were go off king. I love when Sam is selfish. Sam should've been more selfish.
