Good US news because I think we all could use some of it:

The Marines are to be withdrawn from LA. The extreme escalation many of us feared did not happen thanks to the people of LA and the soldiers themselves who said "no".

The "Good Trouble Lives On" protests may not have been as big as the previous "Hands Off" and "No Kings" protests (likely due to heat + being planned on a weekday), but still 1.6k protests were held across the USA with thousands joining in with the peaceful protest.

The Trump administration has been ordered to restore $6.2 million in grant funding to nine LGBTQ+ and HIV-related nonprofits. This is fantastic.

Pittsburgh City Council has passed bills to protect its LGBTQ+ citizens.

California has stepped up to partner with and support The Trevor Project. Let's go, Cali!

Another win for California: Reports show that California is powered by two-thirds clean energy. This is a historic first and it keeps getting better!

The ACLU of Louisiana has secured the release of two wrongfully detained Iranian LSU students.

Shareholders have pushed back on corporations' anti-DEI proposals, forcing companies to face the fact that diversity is good for business... And reminds us that the majority does not agree with the removal of DEI, no matter what MAGA wants us to believe.

Since November, 69 of the 110 Supreme Court lawyers tasked with defending the Trump admin's policies have quit.

Don't let anyone tell you that there isn't hope, that there aren't people fighting and working and just as scared and angry as you are. You are not alone. Peaceful protests, contacting reps, and simple non-cooperation is how we sustainably and successfully push back against authoritarianism.

"We're cooked" is the devil talking. Giving up, rolling over, and perpetuating the idea that we've already failed is exactly what MAGA wants. Don't give them the satisfaction. Don't make it easy. Continue to look after each other and support your communities where you can. Keep protesting, keep calling, keep writing, keep loving. The heart is a muscle the size of your fist; we can get through this as long as we continue to stand up and say "no".

Working in the other store there’s a guy a few decades older than me who’s been selling mattresses for nigh on twenty years. He’s the store manager now and has been plugging along at the same company for all that time.

Yesterday he took a return on a bed in a box that a couple bought thinking they needed a full when they had a queen. They bailed on opening it so the bed only puffed up a little before they crammed it back into the box to exchange it.

In the normal run of things this would be a big no but their circumstances warranted it so the manager okayed the exchange.

Now there’s a partially open bed in a box that needs to get sold and he was discussing it with a coworker when I interjected, “Better sell it soon or it’ll go stale.”

Both men turned incredulous eyes on me, and this man, a veteran bed seller, asked, “Really?”

“Yeah, like crackers. The bed will go stale.”

His expression slowly morphed into humorous disgruntlement as he felt me pulling on his leg.

I started cackling mischievously, wordlessly shaking my head, “No, really, it’ll go stale,” I insisted.

He waved a dismissive hand at my silliness but I caught him chuckling about it again a few minutes later.

as a cis guy, when presented with the "99% you get a ton of money, 1% you turn into a girl" it honestly would be dumb to not hit that button until it breaks. like ok now i have 100 bajillion dollars and gender dysphoria. big deal. i have all the money in the world to turn me back into a guy. like with that kind of money i could have obama do me a phalloplasty. he wouldnt be able to do it as he isnt a surgeon but the point still stands

God I miss landlines and answering machines. You’d be on vacation or just out, and not be accessed. I miss the desktop in the designated space in your house, when you could log out and walk away when you no longer wanted to be emailing or on the internet. We weren’t expected to be accessed or connected every second of the goddamn day.

the thing about the panic about kids absorbing harmful ideas from books is that the most harmful ideas are also the ones that are most prevalent in the broader culture. a lot of the adult fantasy i read as a preteen and teenager had really strongly conservative ideas about What Men And Women Are and how they're functionally different species - which is also the premise of thousands of jokes, at least several very popular movies & songs, and just how a lot of people in the world talk. books can embed themselves pretty deeply in your mind, and there's maybe something different about the kind of influence they have because of the individual work of interpretation, but a lot of the things that are "bad lessons for kids" (bad way of talking about books anyway) are larger problems about society.
