The First Hunch
Intuition seemed to follow Harry around like a ghost in his own home.
The irregular morning sickness could have been entirely coincidental, but that moment when you lost the hopeless fight of keeping your strained eyes open and ended up drifting off beside him was the blinking red sign that he sought. You, the woman he knew like the back of his hand for five years, was succumbing to a nap after dinner. The notably rare occurrence was a spectacle to behold, and he didn’t move a single muscle except for his heart that thumped out of his chest at the mere thought of it being true. It was funny how a fatigued lull of your head on his shoulder told him all he needed to know.
No other conclusion could be drawn. You had to be pregnant.
When you awoke an hour later in an evening daze, Harry found it amusing how disoriented your expression was. Warm tones from a mellow sunset created a silhouette of the open blinds on your face, and it was almost as if you were astonished at how your body managed to do a simple, humanly function such as letting yourself fall asleep. He gazed down at you and raised his eyebrows with an unspoken assumption of what you’d been so futilely denying to both him and yourself.
“Don’t say anything,” you said though an audible yawn before he could get a snarky comment in.
Harry kissed your forehead and knowingly smiled against it. “Just take a test, love. No use in putting it off.”
