Chang sniffled weakly, finally bringing his eyes up to meet hers.  The silence dragged on as he slowly considered her back-tracked claim.
"...I knew that," he finally said, straightening up in his seat and setting the pen down with care.  His hand fell on top of the paper and twitched, the lines and scribbles creasing beneath his fingers  "You suck at joking around, y'know.  And I suggest that you never do it again."
from the heart (chang & annie)
Despite the fact this was Chang, Annie still felt a little bit guilty. He genuinely seemed a little bit upset, although her anger had been intentional, she couldn’t help but wishing she hadn’t been quite so harsh. He was a teacher, after all, and this could certainly reflect badly on her…and the rest of the group. Chewing on her lip, the brunette jumped up, her eyes widening. “No! I. Um. I was…kidding?” She knew she wasn’t fooling anyone, but maybe Chang was dumb enough to believe her.
"I was just, you know…joking around," Annie forced a strained, clearly fake laugh. "I mean of course we would want you in the study group, but you’re, you know, a teacher. It’s out of our hands, we couldn’t exactly study with you.” There was no way this was going to work, but at least she could try.

Chang's initial response to Annie's rant was a strangled whine.  He wasn't entirely sure why, because he had fully intended to deliver a clear, concise, well-articulated sick burn back at her.  He tried to cover up the sound with a cough, mind frantically working to construct a response.
"Mhmm," he settled on.  "I see.  I kind of figu--er, that hadn't been brought to my attention before.  Ever.  Soooooo..."
He dragged the pen across the paper, unsure what to do with his hands.  Maybe he could give writing the Changpology an honest shot.  Or he could try to strangle Annie for hurting his feelings.  It really was a big internal conflict that he was not emotionally prepared to handle.
"Now that you've laid that all out so neatly, I...think.  That.  You should go.  Not so that I can cry along, that'd be dumb, and it's whatever, it's just.  Hmm.  ...that was really harsh, y'know?"
from the heart (chang & annie)
Annie huffed at the word ‘brat’, and glared directly at Chang. “Wanting to keep the group together and get decent grades doesn’t make me a brat, Chang.” Maybe ‘decent grades’ was an understatement, but that was totally beside the point. Chang was frustrating and totally, 100% wrong. “Maybe you’re the brat!” She accused, but even as she said it she was well aware that it was nonsensical and stupid.
"No, Chang, we weren’t. Newsflash: we don’t want anyone new in the group. Period. Especially not you. Has it not occurred to you by now that none of us actually like you?” The brunette was getting seriously riled up, and any thoughts of ‘he’s a teacher, and also potentially a psycho, so this is very, very bad’ had been pushed way, way back in her mind. “We always said ‘maybe’ to placate you, there was never going to be an eventually. The only reason we ever held that little mixer and Jeff suggested you become our eighth member is because he was jealous of Rich and I. None of us actually want you around.” She paused for breath, but there was still so much more to say. This was probably the worst thing she’d ever done at Greendale (well…it was up there), but nothing in her mind was even close to telling her to stop.

Chang gave a sly grin at her indignation.  "Yes you aaaare," he said, practically singing as he wagged his pen in Annie's face.  "World's biggest brat.  The brat queen, in fact."
The pen slipped from his fingers when she continued.  "That," he snapped, groping blindly on the desk for the pen without taking his glare off of her, "is totally un-Chang-lated to everything that ever happened.  Was totally unrelated.  Still is.  I don't care that much.  How dare you.  By the way, you guys were going to let me in until everything started tanking so shut up.  Now about you shut your godawful trap so that I can fake this Chang-pology!"
from the heart (chang & annie)
Annie pursed her lips, trying her hardest not to verbally lash out at Chang. Admittedly it was hard considering he was Chang, but she was doing her best; as long as they didn’t talk about the ending of last year anymore, she was sure she would be fine around him. She’d struggle, yes, but she could probably sit through one of his classes without wanting to wrap her hands around his throat. Eventually. “Fine, whatevs.” The brunette mumbled under her breath, huffing and folding her arms across her chest as her beautifully written apology was taken away from her.
"I’m not a brat!" She protested, one of her usual gasps of indignation falling from her mouth. Okay, maybe it would take a long, long time for her to even attempt to be around Chang without wanting to cook up some form of revenge. "Okay, well, maybe you could start by admitting that all of this happened in the first place because we still didn’t let you in the study group. Even though, newsflash, we were never going to let you in!”

Chang let out a loud, appropriately frustrated harrumph.  "Somebody's grandfather didn't lecture her on responsible fire safety techniques.  Every Chang knows that as long as the fire is blocked off and no one is paying it any attention, it'll just die off on it's own."  Her wood assertion did give him pause, but Grandfather Chang's wisdoms hadn't steered him wrong yet.
Except for the "hit your head repeatedly against a wall if you're having trouble making a decision" wisdom.  And the "cats will love you more if you throw them into the air and catch them like a child" wisdom.  Not to mention the "try breaking your own arm and make a huge fuss out of it to get a hug out of your mother" wisdom.  That had just been an overall disaster.
Maybe Annie had a point.
"...wooden doors are completely irrelevant to the matter at hand," he said gravely, before leaning over to snatch the pen and paper away from Annie with a scowl, scribbling out the beginning of her 'apology' with a flourish.  "If you're going to be such a brat, I'm just going to write this myself, and you're going to weep because I'm going to be the Changpology master, and you're going to be jealous."
Fired up, Chang sneered down at the paper and poised Annie's pen.  And froze.
"...but if you wanted to give me some hints, I wouldn't say no."
from the heart (chang & annie)
"There’s only-" She began, but she didn’t bother finishing. Why educate Chang on the food groups? Clearly he was the world’s biggest idiot, so there was absolutely no point. Like, ever. "You are aware that fire can actually get through doors?” Did he have a single brain cell? Annie seriously couldn’t understand why anyone had ever hired him as a teacher, it had already been made clear that he had no serious qualifications, but he appeared to have no common sense, either. But she supposed the Dean would hire just about anyone, especially if they didn’t expect much in return. “The door was made of wood, Chang.”
She huffed, holding her pen tight enough for the plastic to smash into tiny pieces - it didn’t, luckily. “Hey! I do not look better as a boy!” She protested, but she couldn’t help but shifting in her seat, suddenly feeling incredibly self-conscious. “Do you want me to write this dumb apology, or not?”

"I kept him fed and watered!" Chang snapped back.  "He had at least eight different food groups going on in those meals!  Or maybe three.  I keep forgetting...also!" he added, flinging an arm up to shove a quivering finger in her face.  "Stop trying to dramatize that whole fireworks thing, I had it under control!  The door was locked."
(The door was not locked.  It wasn't locked at all.  Everyone would have been doomed.  And all because of Chang's forgetfulness.)
Unlike Annie, Chang wasn't ready to calm down, not with what was probably his honour at stake.  "I know exactly how this apology should go!  I'm sorry, Annie, that you had to dress up as a dumb boy for that stupid heist, and that it actually made you look better than you usually do.  ...because you're unattractive, if that wasn't clear."
from the heart (chang & annie)
"We didn’t start anything!" Annie protested, but she supposed that wasn’t exactly true. It kind of had been their speeches that got the school so riled up, and it had been her and Jeff that had started the ball rolling. But still, things had got incredibly out of hand, and the expulsion had just been unnecessary. And cruel. "Uh, okay, maybe we got the school a tiny bit riled up, but you’re the one who kidnapped the Dean and almost killed us all!" She was never. Getting. Over. That.
So, maybe she was getting a little worked up over all this, but Annie knew she needed to calm down and pull back just a little bit. “Alright, fine. How do you think I should start it?”

"What's wrong," he said slowly, rising from his seat to enhance the effect of his glower, "is that it's dumb.  And don't act like it was a huge slight against you personally, sweetcheeks.  You and your study group deserved it, for starting that riot, and for trying to oust me from my job.  Again."
He was getting angry again just thinking about it, the whole injustice of that situation, how they had driven him to those actions.  Sure, the whole taking-over-the-school thing was probably going to happen at some point, but it was their fault for providing the perfect opening.
"Now," he said, gritting his teeth as he leaned in closer, "how about you consider making this school Chang-signment a little less biased, so that I can get on with my life."
from the heart (chang & annie)
The threat made Annie raise her eyebrows, but she didn’t question it. After the expulsion and almost-killing of the previous year, an overload of ice cream didn’t exactly sound too terrifying. Still, ‘diabetes’ could come hand in hand with a failing grade, and that was the last thing she needed…even in a class as stupid as History of Ice Cream. It had been Jeff’s blow off class choice of the year, so if she ended up failing she would probably kill him, and then hit her head against a brick wall for the rest of eternity.
"What’s wrong with that I’ve written?" Her tone was innocent, her eyes wide and almost verging on Disney-facing. “I think it sums everything up pretty well. I mean, I do deserve the biggest apology - I’d never even received a detention once in my entire academic career and you got me expelled. It’s only fair.”

"And if you don't do a good job, I'll make sure you get diabetes," Chang chirped back, his responding grin sharp and full of deadly, overly sugary promises.
His smug expression faltered once Annie began and shifted into a pout.  "Okay, I had to come up with that on the fly, you can at least pretend it's believable--"  He cut himself off as Annie continued.
When she raised her eyes to look at him for 'approval', Chang swung his legs off his desk and planted his palms flat on the desk.  "I do not think," he said slowly, eyes flicking down to paper in suspicion, "that I really like your choice of words so far."
from the heart (chang & annie)
Slowly, Annie reached forward for the notebook, wrinkling her nose at how mangled it appeared to be. Of course, she kind of expected as much from Chang, but in comparison to her own pristine, note-filled notebooks…it was pretty much gross. Sitting opposite in him, the brunette cautiously reached into her backpack for one of her infamous purple pens, clicking it open, eyes darting towards Chang. “Alright, well, I guess if this is for extra credit, I better make sure I do a good job.” The smile she flashed him was innocent enough, but as she stared down at the blank page it vanished under an expression of determination.
Without looking up, she began her neat scrawl across the top of the page, mumbling under her breath until she had a few sentences down. “Well, since I’m not an idiot, and I’ve figured out what this is actually for, it starts: ‘Dear Study Group (especially Annie, who should have never, ever been expelled and deserves As all semester for having to go through that), I know I’m a terrible person who deserves to be rotting in jail as we speak, but for some crazy reason the Dean thought it was a good idea to rehire me, so here I am’,” She looked up, her wide, blue eyes staring innocently at him. “How’s that to start?”

Um, are you my History professor? I'm Shannon! *extends hand*
Oh god, are you going to be one of those brown-nosers?  Let's get this straight - you sit at the front of the class, you're going to have to look smokin', alright?  You want to get through the semester unscathed, I want donuts once a week.  And for the love of god, if you're one of those types who scrapes for extra-credit, don't pull an Edison and stage an after-hours failure of a party, all right?
AND DON'T EVEN THINK THAT YOu'll be replacing Toby.  He may have moved on, but he will always my favourite.  In my heart.
Also get that hand away from me before you lose it.

"Hey.  The story is legit, just wait until we over it in class."  Indignation over Annie's obvious doubt aside, Chang couldn't but be pleased with himself and his manipulation skills.  Now all he had to do was read whatever the hell she thought was appropriate to the group (just fast enough for them to not really hear with it still counting), and then he was free to stay at Greendale for as long as it took for him to come up a plan for revenge.
Grinning, Chang opened a drawer and pulled out a notebook that he was reasonably sure was empty and tossed it to her.  "Make sure you're thorough, a'ight princess?" he said, propping his feet up on the desk.  "And make sure you tell me exactly what you're writing and why you're writing it, in clear, precise details.  For future reference.  That reference being to make sure that you aren't...cheating.
from the heart (chang & annie)
"Just how stupid do you think I am, Chang? I’m not Britta.” There was no malice in her tone, but it was still probably an unnecessary comment. Still, she had a point. So, maybe Annie was naive to some degree, but if you asked her she was one of the smartest people in Greendale, let alone within the study group. His little ‘story’ simply caused her to roll her eyes, but there was still that little ‘extra credit’ bell ringing in the back of her brain. Sure, if she wrote an apology speech for Chang to read to the group, there would be absolutely no truth in it whatsoever. But, on the plus side, she could gain extra credit for practically nothing, and make sure that was plenty of Annie praise within the written speech. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad deal, after all.
Chewing on her bottom lip, she contemplated her options for a moment, glancing towards the door as if expecting the study group to rush in at any second and declare that she was making a huge mistake. “Well, I suppose…Do you have any paper?” The sooner she started, the less likely she was to realise what a terrible idea it was in the first place.

"My plans are never dumb," he snapped.  "Also, I don't know what 'plans' you're talking about, so that's irrelevant.  Anyways."
Hands steepled, Chang leaned back in his chair and gave Annie a critical once-over.  He had to be clever and subtle about this, otherwise he was probably pooched.  "Let's say that long ago, in the very real history of an kingdom, whose main export was ice cream, there was this totally awesome emperor, right?  And he got to be emperor through hard work, his wits, and by exiling a bunch of jerks who thought that they were the bosses of the kingdom and by gently displacing the former emperor.  Except the bunch of jerks ended up coming back and un-displaced the former emperor and forced the totally awesome emperor to scram.  So anyways now that totally awesome dude can only come back if he prepares a speech for the jerks about why his actions were wrong."
Chang paused to catch his breath.  Goddamn was he ever clever.
"So anyways, if you want extra credit, you could write the speech as you think it should go.  For this course-relevant ice cream-dependent kingdom.  How about it?"
from the heart (chang & annie)
The words ‘extra credit’ caused Annie to perk up, just a little. Honestly? She would do just about anything for a little extra credit (As long as it didn’t involve breaking the law, anything seriously gross or anything wildly inappropriate, of course), naturally. Considering her opportunity to go to a decent college had been dashed and she’d ended up at Greendale, she at least wanted to attend a good grad school. She was always eager for extra credit and if that meant doing something for Chang, well so be it.
"That depends. What exactly would you have me do?" The brunette’s arms folded across her chest, despite the fact she knew he was far more intimidating to her than she was to him - but there was no harm in trying to stand her ground, right? "As long as you’re not getting me involved in one of your dumb, illegal plans, I don’t see why not."

A heavy silence loomed.  Chang continued to stare at Annie, his gaze dark and as empty as his heart.  This was going to be a much more difficult task than he thought.
"Okay," he said slowly, after a good minute of mulling over her words, "but what if I, as in my friend, doesn't mean it, and thinks that the thing that's supposed to be apologized for remains the most awesome thing he has done.  Ever.  How exactly does one go about making an apology then?  Can I, as in my friend, just pay someone else to write it?  ...also, if you know so much about apologies, would you like some extra credit for a really fun project?"
from the heart (chang & annie)
The words ‘flunk’ and ‘class’ in the same breath made Annie’s eyes widen. Could he do that? Make her fail the class? Okay, so, it was just History of Ice Cream, but that was completely beside the point. She’d managed to fail the Biology terrarium project in third year thanks to Todd (well, okay, the study group, but not the point), but she’d never failed an entire class before. The thought alone made her skin crawl. God, she hated Chang.
'You have friends?' was on the tip of her tongue, but she held back; if she said anything to seriously offend him she'd probably end up failing his class, and as wrong as it was for him to do that, it wasn't like she'd exactly been fair on him in the past (like when she got him fired, for instance). “Well you just have to, you know, figure out what you're going to say and mean it. It’s not that hard.”

Chang's head snapped up at the question, baring his teeth threateningly as he covered up his paper (on which he had only so far written a carefully curved C).  "It's none of your business.  It has nothing to do with you or your dumb little study group."
It was absolutely her business.  And it had a lot to do with her and her dumb little study group.
"Now how about you and your insidious ways go get out of my face before you flunk my class."  He paused with a frown (less because this demand flew directly in the face of his last one), and added, "but first, how many formal Changpologies - apologies, you don't get to make Changpologies - have you made in your life and how do you usually go about them.  I'm asking for a friend."
from the heart (chang & annie)
As per usual, his name puns caused Annie to cringe. There was something incredibly creepy about him using his name in such a way, and she probably would have told him so if it wasn’t for the fact he was moving closer to her. It was going to happen again; she was going to have to stand there wide eyed and frozen as he got right up in her face. And this time there was no study group backing her up. Why the Hell had she ever thought that coming to Chang alone was a good idea, especially after the events of the previous year at school?
The moment he stepped away from her, she felt herself breathing out a sigh of relief. She felt a million times better with him being on the other side of the desk, and she made a mental note to ensure she didn’t sit anywhere near the front of History of Ice Cream this semester (she’d have to write that one down later). “‘Changpology’?” She repeated, nose wrinkling. Well that sounded…odd. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that it was a pun for ‘apology’, but why the hell would Chang be apologising to anyone ever? “What’s that…for?”
