In this scenario I just created in my head: a not-yet-established and complicated Winteragent. Steve comes back (or maybe it's just the memory of Steve still haunting them).

Bucky is determined to stop whatever they have going on, and John begs him not to. To stay. He's so pathetic like that, when it's about Bucky he gets to be like that. Maybe that's why it was never going to work, John loves Bucky more than Bucky loves John. And Bucky still can't let Steve go.

So they fight. Desperation gets John. He spits facts, asks the questions that have been lingering in Bucky's mind. Question Bucky never dared to share with anyone, never said outloud. Too afraid the answers were too obvious. He hates he's not the only one asking them, it makes him feel too exposed. Vulnerable. Mostly pathetic. Especially when it's John using them against him. Bucky knows John is trying to prove a point, but the wound is still fresh, even after all these years.

Abandonment— it might never heal.

That's why he knows where John’s fear is coming from. Bucky is leaving him. Just like Steve left him.

Hurt people only hurt others.

He hates himself for it.

“He left you. I stayed with you,” John says. “Despite everything, I am still here”

And when Bucky doesn't answer him:

“Did he ask you to leave with him?”

“You know he didn't.”

“Because if he had, you would've gone with him. I know. But he didn't ask, Bucky! He went back in fucking time— A time you two knew. He went back and didn't ask you, he left you here. In the future. Alone.”

A beat.

Frustration overtakes John. He presses the heel of his hands to his eyes. He's holding back tears. He lets out a wet laugh.

“I can't fucking believe— I— I feel like I'm still chasing after his name. I never knew the guy, I never wanted to be him. I didn't even want the title, the shield, the fucking responsibility. They were given to me, and I was a coward for not saying no. I never wanted anything of him but you”

John’s tears slide through his cheeks. He looks beautiful. In different circumstances, Bucky might've kissed his tears away.

“I love you,” John laughs, defeated. There's no spark in the confession. “No surprises, right? You knew that already.”

John is right. Bucky knew.

John starts gathering his things. Before he reaches the door, he turns back to look at him.

Bucky wished he didn't.

Wet eyes looking directly at him.

“When you finally get tired of chasing after a ghost, you know where to find me.”

He doesn't slam the door. There's no dramatic exit. He just leaves.

And Bucky wonders— how long is John willing to wait?

bucktommy endearment terms and sweet nothings are so special to me but something about them not actually ever saying them. something about those six months consisting of fun sex, fun hangouts, fun flirting, but the vulnerability of calling each other sweetheart or baby being hidden in their murmurs against each other's sweaty skin in the heat of the moment. the cheekiness in "you're a vision in a cone" lighting up the genuine compliment, the genuine wonder of looking at someone and thinking "you're so beautiful" that'd would be accompanied by a bellyache if it were to come out that raw. something about the sincere wish to be always together only getting verbalized as a scramble to right from a conflict and something about how adorable and amazing you find the other only being admitted right before you leave them...just thinking

I love it when people in this fandom try to find reasons why tommy is such a horrible boyfriend and they bring up 8x05 and say that he wasn't interested in what buck was talking about. my brother in christ that man went to the hospital to see buck right after his shift was over, took him home, took care of him. he was exhausted and in the middle of the night he simply wanted to sleep but he couldn't because his boyfriend was yapping about the curse that a dead outlaw put on him. be so for real right now.
