she had intrigued him from the first — all flame and passion, how could anyone not watch her with bated breath? and with every ounce of attention she granted him, his interest grew, rapacious in his quest to know her completely. lovers came and went for the golden prince, but it was rare one would occupy his mind quite so. araceli velaryon would not be one of many. they sat in dim-lit tavern somewhere in braavos, his addled mind couldn't quite recall how many corners they'd rounded, where the food was unspeakable but the drink was cheap and plentiful. a finger traced her jawline, tucking it under her chin with every intention of tipping it upward — that was when a patron stumbled over his own feet and sent his drink overbrim and over loreon's shoulder. he had half a mind to grab the man by the collar and vent his vexation, but he stopped himself. her company was far more preferable to a half-sloshed brawl. "might it be wise," he began with a crooked smirk, shaking off the droplets of wine that had landed on skin. "to retreat to somewhere private? a beach, perhaps?"

in a way, this was no different from a private audience with the king — only that it had not been granted, but rather occurred by chance. cassandra thought it potentially her only chance to leave a durable imprint on his memory, she wouldn't waste it. "it was perfectly accessible to me, your majesty, albeit concealed from plain sight." a deliberate construction, giving her pause as she wondered if his staff knew of the hideout. if it was solitude he sought, no one ought to know, for a king was never truly alone otherwise. "if you do not wish for it to be entered, might it not be wiser to keep it under lock and key?" a sense of intimacy in the small space emboldened the captain, not that her exploits mattered here. in her function as a princess, she spoke when her father willed it. a lamentable waste of a sharp tongue and an even sharper mind. "sleep often evades me in foreign places." it was not entirely false, but sleep tended to evade her in most places. bone-deep exhaustion a common prerequisite for a decent night's rest. the smirk, paired with presumption — was he mocking her? her features darkened. "my father and i have come all this way, and you plan to regale us with tea and dances?" she asked pointedly. "with respect... ale. ale, and dancing. you know how to brew the proper kind here, yes?" finally, cassandra mirrored his smirk. "my father is a proud and boastful man, as you will have noticed by now. he will appreciate a feast in his honour, but no frills."

at    times    he    wished    to    reverse    actions    that    had    been    taken    with    so    little    thought    to    them.    wishes    to    reverse    them    not    because    he    misses    them.    not    really    . . .     and    that,    in    itself,    is    a    sinful    thing    to    feel    perhaps    ⸺     but    is    it    truly    ?    is    it    truly    wrong    not    to    miss    cold    fists    hammering    down    on    him,    even    cooler    words    torturing    the    soul    of    a    younger    version    of    the    crown    prince.    to    himself    lachlan    thinks    it    is    not.    it    is    not    false    to    appreciate    the    peace    and    the    freedom    he    had    given    himself    the    moment    his    own    frozen    hands    choked    and    squeezed    the    life    out    of    his    father.    

but    he    wishes    to    reverse    his    actions    for    else    reasons.    for    that    he    cannot    find    rest,    that    nights    get    shorter    and    days    longer    ⸺     not    just    due    to    his    duty    as    the    king    of    scotland.    he    sees    it    still.    the    moment    life    had    left    light    blue    eyes.    it    haunts    him.    and    perhaps    it    is    his    burden    to    carry.    perhaps    that    is    the    cost    of    freedom . . .     to    be    restless    and    to    search    peace    where    there    would    be    none.    one    way    or    another,    father    would    always    be    there.    

he    had    thought    his    guests    asleep    when    he    catches    glimpse    of    a    wavy    skirt    in    the    half    darkness    of    the    corridors.    follows    her.    follows    until⸺     they    reach    and    stand    within    a    secret.    his    secret.    his    place    to    mourn,    to    scheme,    to    . . .     be    just    a    boy    when    no    eyes    lingered.    clearing    his    throat,    shaking    the    tiredness    and    the    exhaustion    from    it    now.    “    princess.    “    a    small    nod    directed    at    her.    “    i    am    here    as    this    is    my    home    and    . . .     “    gaze    shadows    the    confined    space    they    find    themselves    in    briefly    before    he    finds    her    face    again.    “    you    have    entered    a    space    not    necessarily⸺     accessible    for    guests. ”     the    corner    of    his    mouth    curls    up.    the    smirk    there    playful,    curious    almost.    “    though    it    makes    me    wonder    what    led    you    here.    should    a    princess    not    rest    at    this    hour    ?    prepare    for    tea    and    dances    tomorrow    ?    “
