Ed Wheeler has researched hundreds of paintings and finds that certain compositions beckon to him for a “Santa intervention.” Often Santa replaces a main figure in a painting; sometimes he is added to a group composition or may even be the single human presence in a landscape. Ed’s intent is to pay homage to the original paintings while offering art lovers an additional reason to smile. Once a painting is selected, he embarks on a multi-step process to fully integrate Santa into the lighting, brushstrokes and tonal values of a particular painting while maintaining the fidelity of the original. It is this attention to detail, lighting and relationships between figures, which lead to another kind of art experience. For the past thirty years, Ed has photographed people, places and things for some of the most important corporations in America. Ed has shot in 35 countries on five continents. He has shot in a coal mine two miles down, a helicopter 2,000 feet up, on an oil rig far out to sea, and on top of Mt. Whitney. Ed was educated at the Wharton School of Business, and has learned to work through the barriers of language, culture and politics. #edwheeler

Suzanne Opton, a photographer based in New York, has created a series of intimate and disturbing portraits of young American soldiers who had recently returned from wars in Iraq or Afghanistan (or both), and who were scheduled to return again to war after a brief stint of more training at an Army base in the United States. The soldiers, who had volunteered to join the Army, also volunteered to be part of Opton’s project without really knowing what it was about. The portraits were made at an Army base, using a very unconventional pose, in a close-up manner. Opton asked each soldier to put his or her head down on a hard table, facing sideways toward the camera. She asked them to remain still while she made the photograph. No further words or directions were exchanged between photographer and subject. As the photographer silently fiddled with her large 4 x 5 camera, adjusting the focus, moving the lights, taking her time, the soldiers tended to let down their guard and get lost in the noise of their own thoughts and memories. She waited for that kind of unguarded moment to capture her picture. The portraits are stripped down, raw, and revealing. Except for the haircuts, there is nothing in the photographs to suggest that these people are soldiers. We see no uniforms or medals or guns or camouflage. Instead we see large disembodied heads, and the intimate details of faces of very young people who look stunned or numb. “Some of them look serene and some of them look shell-shocked,” says Opton. “They’re all terribly vulnerable.” Another thing that is disquieting about these portraits is that we rarely personally see people in positions like these, close up, unless we are in bed with them, side by side, heads resting on a pillow. So, we are forced into an uncomfortably intimate proximity with someone who appears to be traumatized. It is hard to shake that feeling. #suzanneopton

In 2011, after two decades of taking pictures of myself in private, I began a series of self-portraits in which I staged myself as a fictional character named Joyce. Without knowing how to explain what I was doing at the time, I used my grandmothers’ houses, or rented bedrooms online, and took pictures of myself while the hosts were asleep. Once alone I used Joyce to reenact the private underlife of a woman consumed by the laboured construct of femininity, carried out to the point of ritualised absurdity. ‘The Honeymoon’ is a continuation of the ‘Joyce’ series. In the spring of 2015 I spent a week alone at a couples-only honeymoon resort in Pennsylvania, USA. With a suitcase concealing wigs and wedding lingerie, I posed as a travel writer and was granted keys to every suite in the resort, which I used as stages for new self-portraits. In each room we find Joyce in solitary moments of preparation and anticipation. Seduction has begun in secrecy. A green clay body-mask beauty routine becomes a science-fiction metamorphosis. Joyce appears alone, absorbed and exhausted by her own reflection. #junocalypso
