Love is Love So sad to see the reports coming in from Orlando. I get to see Love every week and let me tell you it comes in all forms. Be happy for your fellow humans and if you can't just move on, hate erodes people on both sides of the equation.

The Hero Shot I spend a lot of time thinking about why I do things, literally everything. Sometimes this feels like it makes things heavy but it is really important to constantly tweak and adjust. I am constantly doing this when shooting weddings. It is easy to be consumed with fulfilling your own creative desires, spending 5 minutes lining up some amazing geometric symmetry, 30 minutes scouting that perfect sunset shot. These things are important but I keep coming back to people and the connections between them. It is easy to dismiss a shot as just another party shot but I received this email from Sophie (which she has kindly let me share). --- Hi John and Soph, I hope you're well and I love seeing all of your photos on Facebook, they make me want to get married all over again! :-) I just thought I would drop you a quick note about my Grandmother (not as random as it sounds). I don't know if you remember but my Mum asked if my Grandmother could be someone to focus on at our wedding. She sadly died on Saturday night after a car crash on Tuesday last week. I was with my Grandfather for 3 of the 6 days she was in hospital and he was obviously devastated. But he went home to get some photos of Granny from all stages of her life and the last stage was the attached amazing photo from our wedding. We had tried for years while she struggled with alzheimers to get a good photo of her, but it was impossible (despite how beautiful she is)! This photo sat above her hospital bed and reminded us how happy she was and how glad we were that she was there on the day. I just thought you would like to know how much that photo means to all of us and that the photo will be in the order of service at her funeral next week. I hope you're both well and thank you so much again for capturing such lovely moments at our wedding. All the Best Sophie Bliss x --- It's a poignant reminder to shoot the big fiery skies, impossible angles and super hero shots but don't forget the people, it's all about the people. #weddingphotojournalism #love #family #thisistheheroshot

Top 100 Wedding Photographers in the World Really honoured and surprised to be named in this list and an extra honour to be sitting right next to the amazing Jonas Peterson (alphabetic luck) I still have never entered for a single award so it's extra nice to find myself here among so many talented photographers. I am awe struck daily with the talent out there right now, around the world as well as all the amazing guys and girls who live within a few miles of me. It's this pool of other talented creatives that keeps us all pushing forward and I'm deeply grateful to be a part of it. #workhardstayhumble (at Bristol, United Kingdom)

The Quiraing Dreaming of shooting an elopment in Scotland. Everywhere has that raw combination of drama and romance. Nothing is too pretty and constantly changing weather. Glencoe would be amazing but this place right at the tip of Skye was a such a special place. #scotland #skye #isleofskye #elopment #highlandwedding #scottishweddingphotographer #quiraing #stillcantpronounceitproperly (at Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK)

Excited to gain a brother tomorrow. You would think shooting so many weddings I might be that bit less enthused by a family wedding, but getting to see so many genuine moments between family and friends each week as well as beautiful speeches about people who are sorely missed makes you appreciate these excuses to coalesce even more. #loveandmarrige #lymeregis #coastalwedding #sony #newfamily (at Lyme Regis seaside)

Rewatching Her... such a beautiful film, in so many ways. I always like the line: 'The heart is not like a box that gets filled up; it expands in size the more you love. I'm different from you. This doesn't make me love you any less. It actually makes me love you more' This is obviously true and false, if we are not careful we can easily make our hearts into a box but we should definitely aspire to Samantha's ideal. But this time I thought about how relevant this was to seeing the work of our peers, I have heard so many amazing artists talk about how seeing anothers body of work can begin a downward spiral, feelings that your work is nothing, rushing up at you. I know I can get deeply lost like this. But Samantha is right, some else's work says nothing about your own. It is in fact what helps to drive us all to better ourselves and the whole community of creatives. #parisengagement #58mm #mastinlabs #portra #helsinkibusstation (at Effel Tower Paris, France)

Throwback! to the first couple to ask me to shoot their wedding and start me off on this crazy, amazing journey. So thankful to still call them friends, they are both such beautiful humans inside and out this image has acted as a reminder right from the start that honest intimate moments are what I should be fighting for everytime I pick up the camera. A 135mm is one of my favourite lenses for landscapes. Getting bogged down in technical stuff can be a fools errand but lens choice can and should be an emotional one. Thinking in terms of angle of view rather than just how zoomed in a lens is was one of the most important things I have figured out. The angle of view changes the emotion of the image so much, it's worth really thinking about what you want to say not just what you need to 'fit in' #scotland #craingormsnationalpark #blackandwhiteisworththefight #135mm #landscape (at Cairngorm National Park)

Kintsugi In Greece this week which means a chance to spend time with my parents. They are both deep souls and I end up staring a little deeper everytime I get to spend time with them. I have been thinking a lot recently about fixing the bits of me that feel broken, the cycle feel inexorable. Epiphany, improvement, obsession, guilt, depression, rinse and repeat but making a little progress each time. My mum introduced me to the old Japanese practice of Kintsugi or “golden repair.” The idea being that valuable things should be repaired carefully and with love and that the cracks and repairs actually become a part of the object. Making it more unique, more valuable. I love this idea and think it applies perfectly to the human mind... heart if that's you flavour. Your faults do not have to define you but they are part of you, we should be proud of our mental scars as well as the physical ones. #kintsugi #sea #greece #howdeepistheocean #beabetterhuman (at Vólos)
