steve’s sigh is tired, the sigh of someone who’s been fighting for far too long without a rest.  he knows this is true for her as well.  melody doesn’t deserve to have to keep fighting, she deserves love &. kindness &. everything good the world has to offer her.  she deserves to take it all in, to look out on the world &. receive nothing but warmth &. support.  &. steve….all he wants is to stop fighting.  his wars are long over &. yet they feel as though they’ve only just begun.  he’s a man out of time, out of place in a world that no longer needs him.

gently, steve rests his head on her shoulder, not missing the soft way she flinches &. how it kills him inside.  i wasn’t always like this.  god, how he knows that’s true.
