I print a lot of documents from the manual feed tray. I just changed to a new computer. On my old computer, whenever I wanted to print to the manual feed tray, I would choose the appropriate paper source from the page setup menu in MS Word - both first page and other pages (I was using 2007 version, I am now using 2013 version). How to open Terminal on Mac

The Terminal app is in the Utilities folder in Applications. To open it, either open your Applications folder, then open Utilities and double-click on Terminal, or press Command - spacebar to launch Spotlight and type 'Terminal,' then double-click the search result.

You’ll see a small window with a white background open on your desktop. In the title bar are your username, the word 'bash' and the dimensions of the window in pixels. Bash stands for 'Bourne again shell'. There are a number of different shells that can run Unix commands, and on the Mac Bash is the one used by Terminal.

If you want to make the window bigger, click on the bottom right corner and drag it outwards. If you don’t like the black text on a white background, go to the Shell menu, choose New Window and select from the options in the list.

Basic Mac commands in Terminal

The quickest way to get to know Terminal and understand how it works is to start using it. But before we do that, it’s worth spending a little time getting to know how commands work. To run a command, you just type it at the cursor and hit Return to execute.

Every command is made up of three elements: the command itself, an argument which tells the command what resource it should operate on, and an option that modifies the output. So, for example, to move a file from one folder to another on your Mac, you’d use the move command 'mv' and then type the location of the file you want to move, including the file name and the location where you want to move it to.

Let’s try it.

Type cd ~/Documentsthen and press Return to navigate to your Home folder.

Type lsthen Return (you type Return after every command).

You should now see a list of all the files in your Documents folder — ls is the command for listing files.

To see a list of all the commands available in Terminal, hold down the Escape key and then press y when you see a question asking if you want to see all the possibilities. To see more commands, press Return.

Unix has its own built-in manual. So, to learn more about a command type man (name of command), where 'command' is the name of the command you want find out more about.

Terminal rules

There are a few things you need to bear in mind when you’re typing commands in Terminal, or any other command-line tool. Firstly, every character matters, including spaces. So when you’re copying a command you see here, make sure you include the spaces and that characters are in the correct case.

You can’t use a mouse or trackpad in Terminal, but you can navigate using the arrow keys. If you want to re-run a command, tap the up arrow key until you reach it, then press Return. To interrupt a command that’s already running, type Control-C.

Commands are always executed in the current location. So, if you don’t specify a location in the command, it will run wherever you last moved to or where the last command was run. Use the cdcommand, followed by a directory path, like in Step 1 above, to specify the folder where you want a command to run.

There is another way to specify a location: go to the Finder, navigate to the file or folder you want and drag it onto the Terminal window, with the cursor at the point where you would have typed the path.

Here’s another example. This time, we’ll create a new folder inside your Documents directory and call it 'TerminalTest.'

Now, type mkdir 'TerminalTest'

Go back to the Finder, open Text Edit and create a new file called 'TerminalTestFile.rtf'. Now save it to the TerminalTest folder in your Documents folder.

In the Terminal window, type cd ~/Documents/TerminalTest then Return. Now type lsand you should see 'TerminalTestFile' listed.

To change the name of the file, type this, pressing Return after every step:

cd~/Documents/Terminal Test

mv TerminalTestFile TerminalTestFile2.rtf

That will change the name of the file to 'TerminalTestFile2'. You can, of course, use any name you like. The mv command means 'move' and you can also use it to move files from one directory to another. In that case, you’d keep the file names the same, but specify another directory before typing the the second instance of the name, like this:

mv ~/Documents/TerminalTest TerminalTestFile.rtf ~/Documents/TerminalTest2 TerminalTestFile.rtf

More advanced Terminal commands

Terminal can be used for all sorts of different tasks. Some of them can be performed in the Finder, but are quicker in Terminal. Others access deep-rooted parts of macOS that aren’t accessible from the Finder without specialist applications. Here are a few examples.

Copy files from one folder to another

In a Terminal window, type ditto (folder 1) (folder 1) where 'folder 1' is the folder that hosts the files and 'folder 2' is the folder you want to move them to.

To see the files being copied in the Terminal window, type -v after the command.

Download files from the internet

You’ll need the URL of the file you want to download in order to use Terminal for this.

cd ~/Downloads/

curl -O (URL of file you want to download)

If you want to download the file to a directory other than your Downloads folder, replace ~/Downloads/ with the path to that folder, or drag it onto the Terminal window after you type the cd command.

Change the default location for screenshots

If you don’t want macOS to save screenshots to your Desktop when you press Command-Shift-3, you can change the default location in Terminal

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location (path to folder where you want screenshots to be saved)

killall SystemUIServer

Change the default file type for screenshots

By default, macOS saves screenshots as .png files. To change that to .jpg, do this:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type JPG

Delete all files in a folder

The command used to delete, or remove, files in Terminal is rm. So, for example, if you wanted to remove a file in your Documents folder named 'oldfile.rtf' you’d use cd ~/Documents to go to your Documents folder then to delete the file. As it stands, that will delete the file without further intervention from you. If you want to confirm the file to be deleted, use -i as in rm -i oldfile.rtf

To delete all the files and sub-folders in a directory named 'oldfolder', the command is rm -R oldfolder and to confirm each file should be deleted, rm -iR oldfolder

Just because you can use Terminal to delete files on your Mac, doesn’t mean you should. It’s a relatively blunt instrument, deleting only those files and folders you specify.

Another way to free up space

If your goal in removing files or folders is to free up space on your Mac, or to remove junk files that are causing your Mac to run slowly, it’s far better to use an app designed for the purpose. CleanMyMac X is one such app.

As you can see, while Terminal may look scary and seem like it’s difficult to use, it really isn’t. The key is learning a few commands, such as those we’ve outlined above, and getting to know the syntax for those commands.

However, you should be careful when using Terminal, it’s a powerful tool that has deep access to your Mac’s system files. Check commands by googling them if you’re not sure what they do. And if you need to delete files to save space, use an app like CleanMyMac X to do it. It’s much safer!

Lift up the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the face-down output tray, or remove each page as soon as it comes out of the machine.

Do one of the following:

If your machine doesn't have the manual feed slot cover, go to STEP 3.

If your machine has the manual feed slot cover, open the manual feed slot cover.

Using both hands, slide the manual feed paper guides to the width of the paper that you are going to use.

Using both hands, put one piece of paper in the manual feed slot until the front edge of the paper touches the paper feed roller.

Once the machine has grasped the paper, let go. The side to be printed should be faced up. The machine will hold the paper in place until the print data is sent to the machine.

Before sending the print data to your machine, please do one of the following: For printing on labels: Open the back cover (face-up output tray). For printing on envelopes: Open the back cover (face-up output tray), and pull down the two green levers inside the back cover. > Click here for the details.

The document will be printed out. If the error message still continues, go to STEP 7.

The size of the paper you put in the manual feed slot might be different from the size selected in the printer driver. Check the paper size.

Load the same size paper that you selected in the current driver setting. The document will be printed out. If you want to change the paper source, go to STEP 2 in CASE B.

Cancel the Print Job.

Press the Go button for about 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up and then　release it.

Press the Go button again. The Ready and Error LEDs will flash as the job is being canceled.

If the paper is set to the manual feed slot, the document will be printed from the manual feed slot even though you selected another paper source in the printer driver.

If you want to change the tray temporarily for the next print only, go to OPTION 1.

With Mail Drop, you can send attachments up to 5 GB in size. You can send these attachments right from Mail on your Mac, the Mail app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and from iCloud.com on your Mac or PC. All files types are supported and attachments don’t count against your iCloud storage. Does anyone know how to limit the number of emails downloaded to the inbox. On my previous droid I could limit the number of emails to a selected number (i.e. 25,50,etc), however I can't find a setting on my new Atrix to control this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use Mailbox Behaviors preferences in Mail to change where draft, sent, junk, deleted, and archived messages for an email account are stored.

To change these preferences in the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, then click Mailbox Behaviors.

Note: Mail stores messages in the mailbox you specify for each option.

Add an email account

If you haven't already set up an email account in Mail, you might be prompted to add one when you open the app. If you're not prompted, or you just want to add another account, follow these steps:

Jaa's films captured the attention of his hero, Jackie Chan, who asked director Brett Ratner to cast Jaa in Rush Hour 3. The movie has its redeeming features and fun moments, but the incredibly talented martial arts performer Tony Jaa is unfortunately wasted in a CGI-dominated fantasy spectacle that has little use for his more raw, special effects-free skill set. Tom-Yum-Goong (Thai: ต้มยำกุ้ง, IPA: (tôm jam kûŋ)) is a 2005 Thai martial arts action film starring Tony Jaa. The film was directed by Prachya Pinkaew, who also directed Jaa's prior breakout film Ong-Bak. As with Ong-Bak, the fights were choreographed by Jaa and his mentor, Panna Rittikrai. The film was distributed as Warrior King in the United Kingdom, as The Protector in the United States, as Thai Dragon in Spain, as Revenge of the Warrior in Germany, and as Honor of the Dragon in Russia and CIS countries. In India, it was named Haathi Mere Saathi (literally elephant, my partner), from a name of another Bollywood film starring Rajesh Khanna.

Plot(edit)

Kham is the last of a family line of guards who once watched over the King of Thailand's war elephants. Traditionally, only the most perfect elephants could successfully defend the throne, and very great care was taken in raising them. Kham grows up forming close relations to his elephant, Por Yai and his calf, Kohrn. During Songkran festival, the elephants are stolen with help from Mr. Suthep, a local MP and his son who are collaborating with elephant poachers. Kham raids Mr. Suthep's house and beats up the poachers. He intimidates Suthep into telling him that the elephants are in the hands of Johnny, a Vietnamesegangster who runs a Thai restaurant named Tom Yum Goong Otob in Sydney, Australia.

Kham arrives in Sydney and is immediately taken hostage by a wanted thief posing as a taxi driver. Sydney police officers Mark (Petchtai Wongkamlao), a Thai-Australian, and his partner Rick corner the thief while he holds Kham at gunpoint. However, a second policeman, Inspector Vincent, has been following Kham since he left the airport. First he shoots the thief. After the thief drops dead, he tries to shoot at Kham. Mark, who is puzzled at Vincent's actions, questions why did that. Vincent argues that Kham wasn't a hostage and orders Mark and Rick to retrieve him, which they eventually do. In the car, Kham tells Mark that he's searching for relatives (but he doesn't directly tell him that they are elephants). Along the way, they spot Johnny at the Tom Yum Goong restaurant. Kham becomes erratic and urges Mark and Rick to arrest him, but Mark argues that he can't because Kham is offering no proof of a crime. Kham causes the car to crash and he evades the police. He follows Johnny to a bridge, but Johnny escapes, forcing Kham to fight his henchmen. Kham coerces one of the henchman to lead him to Johnny's hideout, interrupting a drug deal. Outraged, Johnny summons countless extreme sports enthusiasts, who arrive to fight Kham. After defeating the thugs, Kham is exhausted and falls asleep in an alley. A prostitute named Pla (Bongkoj Khongmalai), who met Kham earlier when he confronted Johnny, brings him to her apartment. In his sleep, he dreams of an epic battle involving war elephants and the Jaturangkabart, the elephant protectors. When Pla leaves, Kham wakes up to the sound of police sirens and must escape.

During the meeting, Mr. Sim and the Commissioner are murdered by someone hired by Vincent. However, the murder is caught on the commissioner's camera. Vincent kills Rick and puts the blame on Mark. Mark escapes, but is later captured.

With Pla's help, Kham enters Tom Yum Goong Otob. He fights his way into the VIP area and reaches the dining hall at the top. Kham demands, 'Where are my elephants?' and is met with the laughter of Johnny and his men. Johnny taunts Kham with Kohrn's bell. This enrages Kham and he fights and defeats his opponents. He enters the storage area, containing various exotic animals ready to be butchered and eaten. Instant messaging apps for macbook. Inspector Vincent initiates a search for Kham and Mark, who are hiding in a Buddhist monastery. Soon after their departure, the monastery is set on fire by Vincent and his men. Believing that the temple and its inhabitants might be in danger, Mark and Kham decide to turn around and come back. When they arrive, Kham is confronted by three assassins: a fierce capoerista (Lateef Crowder), a sword-wielding wushu (Jon Foo) expert, and a giant wrestler (Nathan Jones). Kham defeats the capoerista and wushu expert, but the large wrestler proves too strong for Kham. The wrestler gains the upper hand on Kham, but the police arrive, and Mark comes to help him flee. By morning, Kham goes on his way. Mark is discovered by several policemen and sent to deal with Inspector Vincent, whom Pla has revealed to be the murderer.

Kham arrives at a conference hall where Madame Rose is having a press conference. Kohrn runs in, scaring off everyone while Kham engages the gangsters. Mark apprehends Vincent, but Johnny arrives and fatally shoots Vincent to 'settle the score.'

Kham finds himself with Kohrn in a huge room, and he is shown the skeleton of Por Yai, encrusted with jewels as a gift to Madame Rose. Her men then attack Kham, and he attacks them more brutally than previously seen, by breaking many of the men's arms and legs. The wrestler from the monastery is called in, along with three others. Kohrn is thrown through a glass wall, and Kham is knocked into the elephant ornament, causing two leg bones to fall off. Kham realizes that the tendons are the most vulnerable and important part of an elephant to protect, and with this knowledge he defeats the four brute wrestlers by using sharp ends of the elephant bones to slice their tendons. He stops Madame Rose before she can escape in a helicopter, and they both crash into the room below. Kham's fall is broken by Por Yai's tusks.

Back in the lobby, Mark is shown Pla, and forgiven by his boss, Inspector Lamond. He is given a new partner who speaks Thai. Mark is then interviewed by a reporter about Kham. Finally, a narration from Mark is heard, with scenes of Kham's childhood shown. Mark explains that Thai people treat elephants like they are their brothers, and they hate people who hurt them. Thais love peace, but dislike people who take liberties. Kham is finally reunited with Kohrn.

Tony Jaa as Kham, the last of a family line of guards who once watched over the King of Thailand'swar elephants. Kham is characterized by the juxtaposition of his red krama scarf throughout the film. As he grows up, he bonds closely with his elephant Por Yai and its calf, Korn. When they are stolen, Kham journeys to Sydney, Australia to get them back. Actor Nutdanai Kong portrays 9-year-old Kham.

Sotorn Rungruaeng as Kham's father, who taught Kham the fighting style of the Jaturangkabat, the royal guardians of the Thai war elephants. It has been Kham's father's dream that his elephant Por Yai would be selected as one of the Royal Thai elephants. However, during a fake inspection staged by a local member of parliament, his elephants are stolen, and he is wounded by a gunshot.

Compared to Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior, which was noted for its lack of wirework and CGI, this movie uses CGI in several scenes, from the obvious (helicopter scene, and an entirely computer-animated dream sequence), to the subtle (a glass window shattering in the four-minute steadicamlong take that follows Jaa up several flights of stairs as he dispatches thug after thug in dramatic fashion).

The largest example of CGI is Tony Jaa's dramatic leap from the top of a building to attack Madame Rose with a double knee attack. While the background was blue screen with the Australian backdrop added in post production, the long fall shown on screen was real as Jaa and a stuntperson pulled the scene off, landing on large mats below. Even in scenes like this with blue screen, normally a stunt double would be called in for the lead actor, but Jaa once again made sure he did the stunt himself.

Fighting styles(edit)

Tony Jaa and Panna Rittikrai created a new style of Muay Thai for this movie called muay kodchasaan (มวยคชสาร roughly translated as 'elephant boxing'), emphasizing grappling moves. 'I wanted to show the art of the elephant combined with muay Thai,' Tony told the Associated Press in an interview, adding that the moves imitate how an elephant would defend itself, with the arms acting as the trunk.

Stuntwork(edit)

Many aspiring stuntmen sent demo tapes, hoping to be cast in the film. An American stunt actor was cast but did not properly take the impact and was injured on the first take. 'He kicked me, I used my arm to block his kick, and he fell down hard,' Tony told the Associated Press.

However, no one was hospitalized in the making of the film, with injuries limited to 'bumps and bruises, muscle tears, a little something like that. Nothing major,' Tony said.(1)

International sales rights (outside Asia) were purchased by TF1, which made suggestions for re-editing to director Prachya Pinkaew, who then made some cuts that slightly reduce the film's running time from its original 108 minutes.

The UK title is Warrior King, and the theatrical release was on 28 July 2006. In France and Belgium, the title is L'Honneur du dragon, and in the Netherlands and other European it is Honour of the Dragon. In Cambodia, the film is called Neak Prodal Junboth. In India, it was named Haathi Mere Saathi (literally elephant, my partner), from a name of another Bollywood film starring Rajesh Khanna.

Deleted scenes(edit)

A two-vs-one fight scene taking place in the burning temple near the end of the film was deleted from currently released versions of the film. The taekwondo sequence, featuring Dean Alexandrou and Daniel O'Neill is shown in part in nearly all promotional trailers for the film, but was cut due to unknown reasons from the final release. However footage can be seen in the making-of featurettes, and some behind-the-scenes VCDs. The two bodies are seen to mysteriously appear on the temple floor, near the beginning of the temple fight scene.

Prachya Pinkaew stated that he trimmed several of the fight scenes due to their length. Some of these include the sequence on the bridge in Sydney, when Kham confronts Johnny and his henchmen for the first time. One can see in certain trailers Kham launching himself off of the shoulders of one henchmen to elbow the other one. Another sequence that he trimmed considerably was the warehouse fight scene.

In the U.S. release of Tom-Yum-Goong, where it was named The Protector, there is a deleted scene of Kham beginning his ambush of the house party by the criminal group who stole his elephants. In all of its releases, the fight sequence begins with Tony Jaa throwing a henchman down the stairs. But this deleted scene shows where the fight really began.

US release as The Protector(edit)

The Weinstein Company purchased the U.S. distribution rights for Tom-Yum-Goong and retitled it The Protector (also the name of a 1985 film starring Jackie Chan). This version was released theatrically on 8 September 2006. It was released in January 2007 on DVD on The Weinstein Company's Dragon Dynasty label in a two-disc set that includes both the U.S. edit and the original Thai version of the film.(2)

For the US theatrical cut, the film's length was reduced by at least 25 minutes, going so far as to trim down some of the fight scenes, even though it was given an 'R' rating restricting audiences to people aged 17 and over. Out of all cuts outside of Thailand, it is the shortest cut of the film, even more so than the European cuts. It also features a new score by RZA. Some parts of the missing footage (including cuts to the 'bone breaker' fight and Madame Rose envisioning herself in a red dress as queen) appeared in the U.S. trailer and TV Spots.

Also, The Protector is partially subtitled and partially dubbed, with all of Jaa's dialogue subtitled. Several changes were made to the plot through editing and subtitles that did not match the spoken Thai and Chinese dialogue.

The ending epilogue given by Sgt. Mark in the US version is significantly different and nobler than the Thai version, which is whimsical and comic relief in tone and is much less concerned with resolution.

Tom-Yum-Goong opened in Thailand on 11 August 2005, and grossed US$1,609,720 in its first weekend and was No. 1 at the Thai box office (normally dominated by Hollywood imports) for two weeks in a row.(3) It ended its Thai run with US$4,417,800, blockbuster business by Thai standards.(4)

The Weinstein Company released Tom-Yum-Goong in North America in a heavily edited version entitled The Protector, which was the third release by their Dragon Dynasty label. It was also given the 'Quentin Tarantino Presents' brand, which had proven lucrative in the past for films like Hero and Hostel. It opened in 1,541 cinemas on 8 September 2006 and ranked No. 4 in its opening weekend, grossing $5,034,180 ($3,226 per screen). It ended its run with $12,044,087.(5) In the US, it ranks 67th among martial arts films and 14th among foreign films.

On Review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 53% out of 90 reviews, with an average rating of 5.5/10. The critical consensus reads: Despite some impressive fight scenes, this trimmed-down version of the Thai action pic is an off-putting mix of scant plot, choppy editing, and confusing subtitles and dubbing.'(7)

Combat sports and striking analyst Jack Slack has written that Tony Jaa's multiple attackers scene in the film is 'the best fight in movie history'.(8)

Once the poster child for the fact that over night successes are often decades in the making, Thai martial arts star Tony Jaa now appears destined to go down as a case study in the fleeting nature of fame. When Jaa first burst onto the scene in 2004's Ong Bak he was hailed around the globe as the savior of martial arts film, the fresh new face that would bring fresh energy back into a genre increasingly populated by aging stars. His big debut was a massive success in Thailand and around the globe, Hong Kong screen fighter and choreographer Donnie Yen openly stating that Jaa had beaten Hong Kong at their own game. Yen would acknowledge using Ong Bak as a motivating force to do better in his own work, a move that led to the peak output in Yen's lengthy career. The initial acclaim completely ignored the fact that Jaa was in fact not a newcomer at all but had been working with stunt choreographer Panna Rittikrai as a member of his stunt team for over a decade previously, with his first significant screen credit coming in a 1994 low budget Thai offering and Jaa getting a taste of the big time working as Robin Shou's stunt double in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Jaa's overnight success had actually come as the result of over a decade of hard work and toil in obscurity and now it appears as though his peak may have lasted for a mere two pictures. Here's the box office breakdown. The initial Ong Bak hit in 2004, grossing roughly two and a half million dollars at the Thai box office - a big number at the time - while pulling roughly another seventeen million in international theatrical play. Suddenly Jaa was the biggest name in the international fight world and the entire Thai action film industry was reinvigorated. There was a bit part in support of his Ong Bak co-star Mum Jokmok's star vehicle The Bodyguard next, but then it was on to bigger and better things with the much higher budgeted effort Tom Yum Goong, released internationally as The Protector. With its much higher price tag there was much more risk but it paid off with greater rewards: Another chart topping performance in Thailand where it grossed nearly four and a half million, another twelve million in the US and another eleven or so in the rest of the world. Though critics were not kind to the script of the film or to Jaa's wooden dramatic performance it appeared his star was sealed and the big Hollywood offers came rolling in, all of which were turned down. Next came another Bodyguard movie and then the wheels came off. After months of speculation as to his next project word began to circulate that Jaa's relationship with Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew had broken down over Jaa's insistence that he didn't need Pinkaew anymore and that he wanted to direct himself. Pinkaew disagreed but the studio Jaa was signed with sided with their most bankable star and gave Pinkaew the task of launching female fight star Jeeja Yanin in Chocolate while handing Jaa what was far and away his biggest budget to date to make his directorial debut with prequel film Ong Bak 2. To say this was a disastrous move is a gross understatement. As already reported in detail Jaa had a complete meltdown on set and simply disappeared for two months. The film enormously behind schedule and wildly over budget when he was found and returned to work the director's role was taken away from Jaa and handed to his mentor Panna Rittikrai while the studio, desperate for any chance to recover their massive cost over runs, made the decision to enforce some last minute rewrites and split the film in two - thereby spreading the costs out over a pair of pictures and giving themselves a better chance of recouping. The result? Despite the large budget and massive sets the news of Jaa's behavior coupled with a shoddy script resulted in Ong Bak 2 pulling in only 2.9 million at the Thai box office, more than Ong Bak but still a significant loss given the investment. The bigger blow occurred internationally where the lengthy delays and problems in production led to several international distributors - original US distributor The Weinstein Company among them - backing out of their advance deals and forcing Sahamongkol to renegotiate with new distributors at lower values. When it came to international theatrical release the US run reported only slightly above a hundred grand at the box office while the overall theatrical dropped from Tom Yum Goong's twenty three million from the world outside of Thailand to only six. The news is even worse for Ong Bak 3. With the year end lists now out we can see how the film fared in Thailand. Not only did Ong Bak 3 fail to top the charts, it couldn't even crack the top five domestically produced titles, landing instead in seventh position overall with a mere 1.3 million take. That's less than half of the business Ong Bak 2 did at the Thai box office despite being a direct continuation of the story, a sure sign that the local audiences lost interest. Yes, the Red Shirt protests were occurring when Ong Bak 3 released and that certainly would have had an impact but not nearly enough to account for a drop off this steep. And internationally the total currently sits at roughly only a million. The rise of VOD releasing in North America - it is still much less prevalent internationally - over this time frame will have had an impact on the theatrical numbers but, still, the trend is shockingly clear. After rising to incredible heights Jaa has come crashing back to earth hard. The question now is not what will he do next but whether he even has an audience to come back to.

You’ve heard the term, but what is an Archimedes screw pump? How is it used in hydropower or waste treatment? Why is it called an Archimedes screw pump? Did he invent it? We have answers to all of your questions.

The Archimedes screw has been used for ages to move water from a place of lower elevation to another at a higher elevation. Originally, it was operated by hand. Today, the pumps can be powered by wind energy, solar power, or an electrical motor. They move more than water, though that was the original purpose.

Why is it called an Archimedes screw? Historians believe it’s because Archimedes, an Ancient Greek engineer, inventor, and physicist, invented the system. Not only did he develop the technology behind a screw pump, but he also created compound pulleys. How were people in those times using his screw pump?

It was used to continually drain water from a bilge on the Great Ship of Hieron, the King of Syracuse. Syracuse was the city in Sicily where Archimedes was born. Onboard, one man was assigned the task of turning that screw pump to keep draining water from the ship. This screw moved water from a lower point to a higher one.

It became the ideal way to move water in the Nile Delta for irrigation. While crops were grown on banks high above waterways, screw pumps would draw water from the rivers to make sure crops didn’t dry up in the arid region.

Another early use of the Archimedes screw pump was to remove water from deep within Egyptian mines to protect the miners. With water pumped away from them, the risk of drowning reduced as workers went underground to mine everything from copper to gold.

How Do They Work?

How does it work? Wouldn’t gravity pull the water right back to the water source? An Archimedes screw system has a large screw that sits within a cylindrical shaft or sits in an open chute. The bottom thread of the screw sits in the lower water source and scoops some water. As the crank turns the screw, the motion forces the water to propel to the next thread.

Each turn continues propelling the water further up the screw conveyor until it reaches the place where it is deposited. As long as the motion continues, the water will keep propelling to the top and get deposited to the higher area. The speed of the pump and the width of the threads help determine how much water can be moved.

Archimedes screw pumps move more than water. They can move plastic pellets, grains, sludge, and other fluid items. If an item is fluid enough to move, a screw pump with the right dimensions and pump speeds will move them from one level to the next.

Examples of Places Using Archimedes Screw Pumps

You’ve probably seen Archimedes screws at work. They’re used in snow blowers to propel the snow through the chute where it can be directed to a bank or roadside. Open vs. Enclosed Screw Pumps

What about the screw pumps themselves? What are your options? There are two types of Archimedes screw pumps. If the screw is enclosed in a pipe, it’s an enclosed screw pump. With an open screw pump, the screw sits in a concrete trough and is open to the environment.

Why would you want one over the other? Enclosed screw pumps are quicker to install. You don’t have to build the trough from concrete and wait for it to cure. You could use a steel trough instead, but there is still going to be the installation time to consider. With an enclosed screw pump, the screw is already situated in a tube. It’s a quick and easy drop-in placement, which also makes for fast replacements.

An open screw pump needs space. If your water treatment plant, hydropower plant, or other business doesn’t have a lot of acreages to work with, you’ll need equipment that takes up less space.

Enclosed screw pumps come in a choice of Type C or Type S. Type C has the screw sitting within a tube that rotates. As a result, the Type C pump can sit at an angle of up to 45 degrees, which takes up less space. Type S must be at a 22 to 40-degree incline as the tube is stationary. You can opt to mount the tube on a pivot to allow it to be raised or lowered to change the pumping rate. Other advantages are:

An Archimedean or Archimedes screw pump is designed to meet your needs, but you need to consider a few factors when making your final choice. Working with an expert in screw pumps ensures you get a cost-effective design with maximum efficiency and output.

Start with the capacity you’re aiming to meet. How much liquid are you moving from one flight (level) to the next? This needs to be clear several other factors are considered in order to ensure the screw pump design matches your goals. If you pick a screw pump with too small of a screw, the capacity will be affected by the smaller diameter.

As the screw pushes the liquid up the trough or tube, the angle cannot be too steep. If you have too steep a slope, the liquid will continue to leak back to the lowest pool.
