rodentbard:
Well that wasn’t who Venti expected to see when going around Liyues borders. He doesn’t know how welcome he is, nor does he know if he even wants to go further in, with the bustling chaos that Liyue had become, lacking their Archon. Venti wasn’t exactly sure how to feel about that; how to feel about a lack of the geo Archon. In a way, he felt, there was no way he was gone. But with his lack of powers, he’s lost connection with the other Archons; which left him unable to check if his friend was truly dead. ( no way he’d perish that easy.. right ? )
The short silence between them felt deafening; it’s not like they had ever been close at all. At least no, as far as Venti knew or remembered.
Hearing that title left a bitter taste in his mouth, even just the way Kyuma uttered that name was enough to make him feel uncomfortable. Dripping with toxin; as if here to taunt him with his own failures.
“ I’ve been awake for a while. “ It wasn’t uncommon for him to not notice. But it felt a bit.. weird to know; that the other hadn’t noticed losing contact with him. As if he was the one that had perished. But he makes no comment about the heaviness on his heart. “ Why are you mad at me? “ A head is tilted, he doesn’t understand.
Tails bristled at the question, like Kyuma had been outright offended that Venti could ask something like that. Had it not been so upsetting, Kyuma may have found humor in yet another Anemo Archon being oblivious to the grievances of those around him. Had Kyuma been the type to speak before thinking, he may have started talking about the war on the spot, as if that weren’t something that hadn’t been thousands of years ago. However, he figured springing that on Venti so suddenly was the last thing he needed for a surprise meeting like this.
His kiseru pushed back whatever words he wanted to say, and he exhaled a cloud of smoke instead of communicating like a decent person. Why would anyone try to settle things like civilized people when you can fester in your own resentment?
❝ I’m not here to make amends. It doesn’t matter. ❞
Helpful! Thank you, Kyuma. He made a point to avert his gaze from the bard.
❝ I don’t suppose you’ve seen our elusive Morax anywhere, have you? ❞

❝ You stole the words right out of my mouth. ❞
Inazuma was known for a lot of things, but those things tended to vary drastically from the local perspective to the foreign one. The locals could overlook the authority figures to see the festive, innovative, and creative aspects of the city that Kyuma wanted for his little island paradise. The foreigners, however, knew of the strict rules, the treacherous waters, and the impenetrable borders. Well, impenetrable to all but archons, apparently. Sigh.
Kyuma made his way around Murata, making a point to slide a couple of his tails against her as he passed so he could poise in front instead. As he took a drag from his kiseru, he had half a mind to blow it back in her face and tell her to leave, but decided he was just being grumpy because she had entered his domain unannounced. The God of War made him too uneasy for his own good. For all he was concerned, seeing her just a bad omen.
Instead, he turned his head briefly to blow the smoke skyward, then gave her one of his usual condescending smiles.
❝ You’re just a tad too early for my birthday festival~. Though, I’m flattered you came here without even my invitation. ❞
Translation: I don’t know why you’re here, but you shouldn’t be.
@foxicleader | STARTER CALL .
oh , inazuma – always an … interesting place to be . while it was incredibly rare for murata to have enough time to herself to travel teyvat , her left & right hand generals had graciously given the archon a chance to rest for a bit while they watched over natlan & its military in her stead . the last time she had this opportunity , which had been years ago , she had visited mondstadt – next on the list was inazuma . uncertain of how much time she truly had at the moment , it was wiser to pick a closer nation than , say , liyue . she had forgotten , of course , just how different inazuma was from natlan . it was flashy , lively , vibrant ; such was expected from a nation ruled by kyuma himself . murata curiously wanders the crowded streets under the lanterns , stopping at stalls along the way to grab various sweets & foods to put into her basket , before she finds a quiet place out by one of the main city’s ponds & sits herself down on the bench under beside tree so she can eat . the breeze is cool , much different to the heat of the desert , & it feels nice upon her skin … she almost gets lost in the feeling , shoving foreign treats into her mouth like she hasn’t eaten in weeks , until the sound of footsteps approaching from behind her makes her pause ; she’d recognize that presence from anywhere . had she jinxed herself just thinking about his name earlier ? not that she minded kyuma , of course , but … to her he could be a bit … much , sometimes .
— ❝ if you were anyone else , i would’ve attacked , ❞ murata calls out as she glances behind her & takes one more bite of her food . so much for peace & quiet , she supposes . — ❝ you shouldn’t sneak up on people like that . ❞

+ More about the Old Archons
Further evidence suggests that another reason the Tsarista and the Immortal Shogun are both the Original Archons are the fact that they are the only ones who do not currently reveal their god titles. All the other Archons have titles of some kind of mortal / human concept (Freedom, Wisdom, War, Contracts, Justice), whilst Decarabian, an original archon, held the god title “God of Storms”, which is a natural concept. This may suggest that both the Cryo and Electro archons hold some sort “God of [natural concept]” as well??
SO, ENOUGH THEORY CRAFTING AND ONTO THE ACTUAL HEADCANON: Kyuma is the God of Spirits. While he does not faciliate death itself, he does hold some control over the spirit realm, spirits, and the dead. Some even say that he may have created the spirit realm itself, but it and he have both been around for so long it is hard for even him to recall.
And speaking of Decarabian, Kyuma felt incredibly sorry for him after he died. It hurt to hear Decarabian’s spirit ask him questions like “What did I do wrong?”, “Why would they do this?”, “Didn’t they love me?”, “Didn’t they know I loved them?”. He and Decarabian had similar views on how to protect people, so it was only natural he sympathized with him, but Kyuma also understood his people’s want to overthrow what they saw as a tyrant. What he doesn’t understand is Venti’s deafness to the situation. He is so adamant about his views of freedom that he never understood what was truly the problem to begin with.
Kyuma still firmly believes that people need guidance. After all, spirits are liable to be consumed by the chaos if they don’t have a guide, what makes those very same spirits different while they are still mortal? But, taking some caution from Decarabian’s situation, he will allow some to slip through the cracks if they are passionate enough about doing so (i.e. Atsuko). If they cannot see eye to eye with Kyuma even with all the enlightenment he provides, then they do not belong in his paradise.
After all, that is what happens to those spirits who stray from him in the afterlife. He is used to it. It makes him sad, but there is only so much he can do about it.

Kyuma & The Archon War
So, what we currently know of the Archon War
Of the seven victors of the Archon War, only two remain by the start of the game's story. After Rex Lapis' (alleged) assassination during the Rite of Descension, he is called "the sixth" to depart from this world, suggesting most of The Seven's current members replaced the original founders of Teyvat's seven nations. It is likely that "The Seven" only came to be known as such some time after the Archon War ended, after some of the founders were replaced by the current Seven and Teyvat was molded into its current shape.
So! The two archons who remain from the Archon war, I believe, are most likely the Tsarista, because... it makes the most sense storytelling wise, and one other. Considering the Electro Archon has been named The Immortal Shogun, it’s safe to assume it’s probably him. Kyuma’s relation to being a spirit guide goes well with this-- but it also means he has seen some shit.
Before the War, Kyuma had his views on being leader were derived from his experience with the dead spirits. Human souls got lost so easily. Human souls needed so much guidance. Human souls needed someone to watch over them constantly and to let them know what to do and where to go. Else they get lost in the chaos. Thus, Kyuma’s views on orders and rulings made a lot of sense in that context, even if they may have seemed a bit restrictive.
Once the war began and the Archons began being offed, their voices attempted to destroy Kyuma’s psyche. He felt their pain and anger like knives against his skin. Immortal souls were so hard to deal with. Immortal souls never wanted to move on. Immortal souls tried to fight against their inevitable finality. Kyuma was tired. Kyuma was frustrated. Kyuma was terrified.
Paranoia seized Kyuma after the war, making him loosen all of his ties with the other archons and making his island next to impossible to actually enter, keeping his perfect little paradise to himself and hoping that if history repeats itself again then it won’t involve him.
Clears throat. With recent development that we have learned from the 1.1 update, this will be revamped to the following: Kyuma was a kitsune spirit guide before the war. He did not often leave the spirit realm, but had met many of the now dead archons during their path to the beyond. This took quite the mental toll on Kyuma, as immortal spirits are much harder to accept death than mortal ones.
Once the war ended, Kyuma was in a state of immense distress. Many of the gods who died left Kyuma questioning if he even wanted to be a spirit guide anymore. It was a lot harder for him to sympathize with spirits of the immortal kin, and left him cynical thoughts of wanting to just leave them to the chaos. So, Kyuma sought out Celestia for answers. What he got, instead, was a new job in light of the death of the Electro Archon.

Hello, do you like two-faced agents of the Fatui with their own agenda in addition to what they’re assigned, as well as a penchant for meddling? How about Hydro users who can not only snipe you with great prejudice despite it being their weakest skill, as well as get up close and personal to slice and dice you up like sashimi? Then boy, oh boy–Childe’s the man for you, he’s got it all and he’s loaded.
My name’s Kaerene, and I’m running this humble little side-blog ( I follow back from getofflikeagun) for him! If you could kindly like/reblog this to help get it around, I’d really appreciate it!

There’s a lot things that Kyuma expected upon entering Liyue. The stray spirits everywhere, the chaotic bustling that comes with the “death” of a god, the nervous looks from people who were unsure of his status... However, not on those list of things, not even in last, was the possibility of seeing the Anemo Archon.
At first, it was almost as if Kyuma didn’t know how to process the information in front of him. This was just supposed to be a smoking break outside the city while he collected his thoughts. And that’s all it was supposed to be. So, then, why was he here? It’s then that he briefly scowled, like the bubbling bitterness in his stomach had to make itself known somehow, before he managed to replace it with one of his usual smiles.
❝ Barbatos. ❞
Those few syllables practically dripped with poison. His tone was never really anything less than sarcastic to begin with, but to the bard, he made no attempt to hide the resentment, despite the smile he plastered on just for him.
❝ I’m surprised you’re awake. Did you finally get restless, or by some miracle are you not running away from your problems? ❞

❝ あなたは死のようなにおいがします。❞ « You smell like death. »
Not that Kyuma has any room to talk about horrible smells, since he’s always seen with some sort of tobacco product. However, if there’s any scent that he was particularly wary of, it’s of those who had almost met their untimely demise. That scent lingers... for a long time.
❝ I suppose I’m not surprised that Mondstadt has somehow gotten worse about it’s residents, but I’m disappointed nonetheless. ❞

dehimmel:
it was a slow day , almost painfully so ; desperate for some kind of work , rowan had taken to the street in order to scout out some opportunities . whether it be foraging , hunting , bounty hunting … he would’ve taken anything ; yet it seems he’s unlucky today , with his only lead being a set of papers given to him by a kind restaurant owner . hiring fliers for shops around the area … cashier , barkeep , stocker … no , none of this would do . with a sigh & a heavy heart he flips through the fliers , completely preoccupied with his search . he’s rather suddenly startled out of his thoughts by the sound of someone approaching him – talking to him – & he snaps his head up to look at the source of the voice . green eyes squint momentarily as though he can’t believe what he’s seeing ; a cat man ? no ; most definitely a fox , right ? until something clicks within his brain that hey , he looks … familiar . familiar as in , reminiscent of those storybooks of the electro archon he had read to his siblings growing up , the same archon who had blessed him with his vision in the years prior . rowan stares for a moment more before his cheeks redden ever so slightly & his hands reach down to grab at the vision that hangs from his hip . was this … no , no way ! no way the electro archon would walk up to him , of all people – right ? maybe this was a cosplayer or … something .
— ❝ oh – this ? i … yes , i’m very proud of it ! i just worry that , despite its hardiness , that i’d break it somehow … that would be my luck . i figured it would at least be safe on my hip for now . ❞ rowan offers a somewhat awkward laugh as he unclips it from his belt , holding it carefully in his hand . — ❝ thank you , i … didn’t think i’d be blessed with electro , of all things . it was a surprise to me , & i’ve been devoted ever since … you – you must be rather devoted too , yes ? ❞ he motions to – well , basically all of kyuma – he had to be a cosplayer . totally .
❝ Break? ❞
Kyuma was almost offended at the word, but merely laughed it off afterwards. As if his visions would ever break. What a silly thought...
❝ Me? Oh- ❞
Ah. Yes! Of course. He’s just an extremely devoted person. Definitely not the Shogun himself. That would be silly. Kyuma wafted his pipe off to the side, making small swirls of smoke in the air as he did so, doing his best to mimic the electro symbol in the air. It wasn’t going over well, but he was doing his best. At least he was having fun with it.
❝ Yes, of course. The Electro Archon is truly the best~. Inazuma would not be nearly so close to perfection without his good graces. ❞
Was that too much? No, no, of course not. If anything, he wasn’t patting his own ass enough.
❝ It is why I believe it is important to show the whole of Teyvat your dedication to our Shogun, no? His gifts mean the world to him, it’s only fair the world knows that. ❞
There we go. Ass sufficiently patted.

People brought back from the dead really fuck with Kyuma
There is only one absolute that Kyuma knows, and it’s the inevitability of finality. He is used to hearing the voices of the recently deceased, and he is used to feeling an urge to guide those very same souls. However, being brought back to life forever silences those voices to Kyuma, meaning there’s no way of guiding them after their “finality”. This bothers him immensely.
Mortals deserve to move on. They don’t know what sort of doors they are closing if they can’t. They don’t understand. They can’t understand.
With that said, Qiqi would bother him immensely if they ever met. He understands that a mortal being caught in a war between the immortals is tragic and would likely upset said immortals, but Kyuma doesn’t understand why they would try to reverse it as if that would amend their mistake and not just make it worse. He thinks that this is not only a cowardly thing to do, but also is completely unfair for the mortal-- in this case, poor Qiqi.

Rex Lapis is dead.
It was weird hearing that from the voices of the living. Merchant ships from Liyue frequented Inazuma, so any rumors would often make its way to Kyuma fairly quickly. However, rumors of death had never come as a surprise to the kitsune. He was, after all, formerly a spirit guide. So, why had he not been made previously aware of such a critical piece of information? Surely the spirits would not be slacking.
It was practically unheard of for the Shogun to leave his territory, but for this, he decided he had to. The curiosity and the questions were just too much for him to not go to Liyue. His biggest issue was... he was not sure where to begin looking for the other Archon.
What a hassle.
Searching Liyue Harbor was the obvious conclusion, but his presence there would surely start a ruckus. If not because of his own status, but just because he might be mistaken for one of the adepti of this land. He was better off listening to the spirits here. They always had something to say. Always.
So, why not opt for the peculiar inn that had the aura of spirits practically screaming at him? It was as good as a place to start as any. Plus, it would be much easier to ignore any stares his way in such a small place. In fact, he was surprised at how little people seemed to be paying him any mind (and, maybe slightly annoyed by that, as well, but he did his best to push that thought aside).
❝ ぼくなたを見つけました。❞ « I found you. »
It, admittedly, took a bit of searching, but his efforts weren’t in vain. He found the adeptus-- one that apparently had quite the reputation here. After blowing smoke out in Xiao’s direction, he slapped on his friendliest smile. Which, for him, still embodied that of a troublemaker’s.
❝ The other spirits here say good things about you. Think you can spare a moment for little ol’ me? ❞

❝ I admire your determination, really, but you should at least wear my gift a little more proudly, don’t you think? ❞
Kyuma’s presence was entirely unannounced, and for a moment, it may have seemed like his voice was just inside Iori’s head. However, upon spotting a fox who was far more concerned with making himself comfortable than anything else, it was easy to assume the kitsune was just fucking with him now.
❝ It’s like having a piece of me. Is that not something you’d want all of Teyvat to know? ❞
