Rosetta Stone is probably the most popular language learning software out there, and they spend millions of dollars a year in advertising to convince people that it is the best.

But how does Rosetta Stone live up to the hype?

They claim that you can learn a language the same way that you do when you are a kid. They flash images in front of you and tell you what they are, and your task is to repeat them. The Rosetta Stone methodology is good for learning vocabulary with alright pronunciation, but its not that great for learning how to actually speak and communicate.

The big failure of Rosetta Stone is that in an attempt to have a large quantity of languages that they offer, they have cut corners on quality. None of their programs are unique. They are all cookie cutter programs that use the same translations and pictures. There is nothing that was specifically designed for Brazilian Portuguese.

So you’re not going to learn anything in particular about Brazil with Rosetta Stone. You’re not going to learn slang, you’re not going to learn Brazilian Portuguese as it is actually spoken by Brazilians today.

I can’t recommend Rosetta Stone to anybody because I don’t think it prepares people for the reality of Brazilian society. Its nothing more than an expansive deck of flashcards. I really have to wonder if these people even have a Brazilian visa.

If you really want to learn Brazilian Portuguese you should use Semantica Portuguese. Semantica is a company that specializes in teaching Brazilian Portuguese to those who are planning on moving to Brazil.

Semantica Portuguese is a series of high quality videos that tell the story of a girl who moves to Rio to pursue a fashion career. As you follow along her journey you are learning how to speak like a Brazilian, you’re learning about Brazilian culture and you really start to feel like you’re in Brazil. No other language learning course can do that.

Obviously I’m a little bit biased about this course because I am actor and presenter in part of the series. Before that happened though I was a student of Semantica, and I used their program to improve my cultural fluency as well as my speaking abilities.

Given the price difference between the two and the quality of instruction, I think you’d be making a huge mistake if you invested in Rosetta Stone. If you’re still thinking about using Rosetta Stone, here’s another article I wrote that goes even deeper into the specifics of why Rosetta Stone Portuguese doesn’t work very well for Portuguese learners.

Learning Portuguese is mandatory if you are headed to Brazil. Whether you’re going just for a few weeks, or if you’re planning on living here, learning the local language will significantly improve the quality of your travels.

But you already knew that. That’s why you’re looking to invest in professional assistance with the language, perhaps with a Portuguese teacher or a digital course.

Not all courses are created equally though. Some courses are designed without empathy for their students who will use them.

There is one course in particular that is the worst offender of this crime. It also happens to be one of the most well marketed language courses in the world. Maybe you’ve seen their bright colored boxes at Barnes and Noble, or at gift shops in the airport.

Of course, I’m talking about Rosetta Stone, the expensive language learning software that promises fluency in 30+ languages.

But is Rosetta Stone really that great for Brazilian Portuguese learners? Let’s dig deeper.

In the first lesson of this course they teach you how to say, “The girl is drinking,” “The boy is eating,” “the man is eating,” and “the woman is drinking.”

This is really useful stuff if on your first day in Brazil you go people watching in a park and want to give your friend a step by step account of who is putting what into their mouths.

I understand why they are teaching these things in this way; they want to teach you the verb ester through context at the same time that you’re learning common nouns like man and verbs like eating. And I get that they’re aim is to build your confidence up slowly with basic words like ‘boy’.

But honestly I can’t remember ever saying any of these sentences in a conversation in Portuguese, Spanish or even English for that matter. They could’ve taught the verb estar using examples that you’re likely to use as a foreigner in Brazil.

It’s certainly not the first thing that I would teach someone who is going to Brazil in a few weeks

I would start by teaching things that are more immediately useful, like how to say “Thank you” in Portuguese, “Nice to meet you?” “how much does it cost?” and “I don’t understand.”

I’m not sure what kind of conversations Rosetta Stone Portuguese’s creators expect you to have, but their material certainly doesn’t match any normal conversation I’ve seen in Brazil.

Here is a sample conversation that you’ll likely be a part of if you go to Brazil.

Where are you from? “Eu sou da Australia.” I’m from Australia. “O que você esta fazendo aqui?” What are you doing here? “Estou aqui para trabalhar.” I’m here for work. “Mas por quê aqui no Brasil?” But why here in Brazil? “Porque eu acho que o Brasil é muito legal.” Because I think Brazil is really cool. “Você já foi para o Rio?” Have you been to Rio yet? “Ainda não.” Not yet. “Lá é muito bom, você tem que conhecer.” It’s great there, you have to visit. “Ta bom então.” Ok then. etc.

You’ll learn 6 adjectives to describe hair before you learn how to say, “Where are you from?” with Rosetta Stone

Every time you meet a Brazil you go through some variation of this conversation. The questions might vary somewhat, but it’s a pretty safe bet they’re going to ask you where you’re from.

It isn’t until lesson 2.5 before they teach you this question, which almost every single Brazilian is going to ask you. In fact, before Rosetta Stone teaches you how to say, “Where are you from,” they teach you 6 adjectives to describe hair.

I’m sure that if you stuck with Rosetta Stone and diligently studied with it every day for several months you could have decent conversations with Brazilians, but you’d have to supplement what Rosetta Stone doesn’t give you with outside learning. That’s like going to a sem balança restaurant and having to bring your own beans.

I’ve really got to wonder though if the people who make this course even have a Brazilian visa. There is nothing in the course that suggests that they’ve adopted their method to Brazilian culture and the unique way that Brazilians speak.

For example, the greetings they teach are ridiculously formal and almost never used by foreigners in Brazil. You’ll have to wait until lesson 2.4 to even learn how to greet someone, which is an essential part of polite conversation. Once you finally get there, they teach you, “Como vai o senhor?” and “Vou bem.”

If you use these greetings with friends they will correct you and tell you to say, “Oi tudo bem?” “Tudo bom,” as a greeting and response.

The images Rosetta Stone uses to teach are not unique to Brazil and are the same ones you’d see in their Mandarin or Arabic courses. It would be more effective if they taught the word ‘child’ with a Brazilian kid laughing while playing soccer with his friends on the beach in Rio de Janeiro with Christ the Redeemer in the background.

It’s too much hassle for a company with a multimillion dollar advertising budget to travel to Brazil to take a picture like this one.

Quite frankly I cannot recommend that you use Rosetta Stone to learn Brazilian Portuguese. The lack of focus on useful conversation, the teaching of frivolous vocabulary and disconnect from Brazilian culture end up making your job as a student much more difficult. If you use Rosetta Stone you’ll have to relearn Portuguese as it is actually spoken once you finally get to Brazil.

Fortunately there is a course out there that teaches conversational Portuguese in a way that connects you to Brazilian culture.

You’ve probably never heard of it though because it’s a program that only exists for Brazilian Portuguese.

That course is called Semantica Portuguese. Unlike Rosetta Stone which teaches you through boring images, Semantica teaches you through stories filmed by Brazilian actors in Rio de Janeiro. This method is so much more effective because you get to see real people using the language in context.

It was also made specifically for foreigners who are traveling to Brazil, taking into account the cultural differences that you’ll have to adapt to in Brazil. When you learn Portuguese with Semantica you also get to see and experience Brazilian culture which will reduce the culture shock you’ll feel when you arrive in Brazil.

You also won’t have the problem of buying a course that you never use with Semantica. Semantica teaches Portuguese through an ongoing series of stories, so you’ll want to keep learning so that you find out what happens to the characters.

It’s simply the best course that exists for learning Brazilian Portuguese.

Using VMware Horizon Client for Mac OS X provides information about installing and using VMware Horizon™ Client™ software on a Mac to connect to a remote desktop or application in the datacenter. Meterpreter Updates

This is a big week for Meterpreter. For starters, we've landed a new Meterpreter Python payload. Yes, yes, I know, you thought that Metasploit was all Ruby all the time, but this and the Python payloads for bind shells from Spencer McIntyre should help out on advancing the state of Meterpreter by leaps and bounds. Despite Metasploit's massive Ruby footprint, most security developers know Python well enough to scratch their own penetration testing itches in it, so I'm looking forward to a lot of active development here. Plus, since Python is part of the Linux Standard Base, you're quite likely to find it on pretty much any normal Linux distribution, so it should see a lot of use for non-Microsoft targets.

In other Meterpreter news, we have a new contributor entering the fray on the Windows 32-bit and 64-bit side by the name of OJ Reeves. His entire mission in life (at least, for now) is to make it much easier for normal humans to compile, test, and extend Meterpreter for Windows platform. If you've been down this hacking Meterpreter path in the past, you know what kind of pit vipers can be lurking in that code, so expect to see some massive improvements there in the next couple weeks.

VMWare Setuid Exploit (CVE-2013-1662)

This week also sees a new local privilege exploit targeting Linux, the VMWare Setuid vmware-mount Unsafe popen(3) module (aka, vmware-mount.rb). Discovered by Google's Tavis Ormandy and implemented by our own James Egypt Lee, this exploits a setuid vulnerability that takes advantage of a VMWare installation to sneak a root shell. Egypt discusses the Metasploit implementation at length in this blog post, so I encourage you to check it out. Note that this module does not enable attackers to escape from the VMWare guest to the host operating system; it's specifically useful for taking advantage of a VMWare installation to elevate privileges on the host OS itself.

More OSX Hijinks

The other set of modules I want to hilight is a trio from Rapid7's Joe Vennix: the OSX Capture Userspace Keylogger module, the OSX Manage Record Microphone module, and the OSX Manage Webcam module. As you can probably guess by their titles, these are all post-exploit modules penetration testers can exercise to extend their eyes and ears into the site under test. These kind of Hollywood-hacker style post-exploit tricks are exactly the kind of thing that great to demo to clients to help explain the true risk associated with Apple desktop / laptop bugs, since they are, by their nature, pretty dramatic and fun to use.

Finally, this week, we're going to be pulling the trigger on the great retabbing of Metasploit in order to bring us up to the normal, regular coding standards common to Ruby projects. This program can convert a bunch of different file types, including 7Z, DAA, DMG, RAR, XAR, etc. It can also take any CD/DVD/Blu-ray and convert that to an ISO or BIN/CUE image. I have a slew of roms that have bin and cue files but I want to add certain ones using Bleemsync that I unfortunately only have.img and related filetypes for (a couple big ones being Chrono Cross and Einhander).

2. Once you have your backup game in .Bin/.Cue or .ISO format you can open PSX2PSP. The main window will show a preview of what you will see on your PSP when you select your game.

3. Open the Convert menu and click the first drop down box. Select ISO/PBP File 1 and then choose the location of your backup PSX game. The rest of the text fields should populate with information about the game selected. Then choose an output location on the next line, this is where your EBOOT.PBP will be stored after the conversion.

ISO/PBP file is selected and the rest of the form populates. A custom Icon image is added.

4. If you want to make the game look nice on your PSP you can open Customize PBP and add custom images. If you want custom music when hovering over the game you can follow this guide.

5. Once finished customizing text and images you can click Convert in the Convert menu. Once the process is complete, you will have a folder named after the game title ID (eg. SLUS0001) and inside is the EBOOT.PBP. Move both the folder and the containing eboot onto your PSP memory card GAME folder. Disconnect from USB Mode and you will see your game listed.

CDDA Enabler is a plugin by TheFlow to enable audio with PS1 games that have multiple bin tracks. Those games need to be merged into one file and then converted before using PSX2PSP. CDDA audio is disabled on POPS above 4.01 and new model PSPs like the Go or 3000 can’t play games on a really low POPS version. This plugin allows you to have audio without needing POPSLoader. Save your changes and disconnect your PSP or memory card from the computer. Reboot your PSP or reset the VSH to apple your changes. Launch the PS1 game that had no sound and now it should.

Some PS1 games have multiple BIN files and that causes your PSP to have no audio when in game. You’ll have to merge the files and then follow the steps above to convert to EBOOT format. First download CDmage v1.02 Beta here. Run the installer and note where you extract it. Launch CDmage and open the CUE file of the game you want to merge. Select and highlight the cue file in the image tree (eg. Image (Twisted Metal 4 (USA).cue). Go to File and Save As. Choose a new directory to save this merged BIN file and CUE file. A Prompt will show save options, just leave them as is. Once converted you can now convert the game with PSX2PSP and use CDDA Enabler plugin to hear the audio.

It is preferred to have the Game title and Save title the exact same, and not to make them too long or use foreign characters.

To make it easier to manage, you can open PSX2PSP options, go to the folders tab, and choose Auto create folder on convert: Create game title folder. This will get rid of the annoying title ID so you can know which games are which. Folders in GAME on your PSP do not need to be named a certain way for these.

As noted previously, most games will work but there are a handful of PSX titles that just can’t be played on the PSP. A good way to check is if the game has ever been on the PSN Store with PSP compatibility, it will work. Some titles have been removed due to licensing though.

You may need to play around with the compression setting for PSX2PSP. 0,1,2,9 are the most common settings depending on the game.

It’s been a week since Apple introduced iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 at WWDC 2021, but we’re still discovering some new features that weren’t mentioned on stage or on Apple’s website. In addition to having widgets on the home screen and new multitasking shortcuts, iPadOS 15 enhances the Files app with a progress bar, NTFS support, and more.

Now when you’re copying a file in Apple’s Files app, there’s finally a progress bar to indicate the remaining time and how much data has already been copied. A progress indicator icon appears right next to the create new folder button, and users can cancel ongoing tasks from there.

This alone would be a great improvement for iPad users as previously there was no way to see the progress of such tasks in the Files app, but there’s even more.

If you plug an NTFS-formatted USB stick into the iPad, it can now be read by the Files app. It’s worth noting that this is only partial support, just like on the Mac, so you’ll only get the read-only mode without being able to add files to the USB storage. Still, much better than not even being able to see the files on an NTFS flash drive as in iPadOS 14.

For those who have a mouse or trackpad paired to the iPad, iPadOS 15 enables the selection of multiple files at once with the cursor, so you no longer have to select one file at a time in order to copy, move, or share them. Unfortunately, at least in beta 1, the Files app still lacks the ability to check folder sizes or open DMG files, which are features requested by many iPad users.

iPadOS 15 beta is currently available for developers, while a public beta release will be available in July. The update is expected to be officially released to the public this fall.
