In the Mac OSX version, radio channel data are not accessible with the Voice Over screen reader. Also, a mouse or other pointing device is required to navigate and edit the table of data. Choosing What To Display

There are two choices for how CHIRP displays transmitted CTCSS access tones and DTCS codes:

1. Hide Unused Data. Dan Smith, KK7DS, added this option in the View Menu so blind and vision-impaired hams can read from the CHIRP window more easily. For example with this option, stored CTCSS tones and DTCS codes are hidden for 'No Tone' mode channels.

2. Show Unused Data (default setting). In most radios you can program each channel with a CTCSS access tone and a DTCS code for future use. Transmission of the tone or code can then be turned on or off 'in the field' using a control on the radio. (Wouxun radios are an exception—stored CTCSS tones and DTCS codes are always active.) If you do not select 'Hide Unused Data,' the stored CTCSS and DTCSS data are displayed whether or not the channel is programmed to open in a mode that uses them. Note that showing unused data causes Chirp to display meaningless numbers in the CTCSS and DTCS columns of channels with no programmed tone or code.

Using CHIRP

Figure 1 shows the program window for a Wouxun KG-UVD1P radio when 'Hide Unused Data' is selected.

To edit a channel if you are not using a screen reader: Click on the cell you want to edit and either choose an option from the drop-down menu or type the entry, depending on the column. Save the edited file to your PC as a backup, and load it into the radio memory (Radio → Upload to Radio).

In most cases, the editor in CHIRP will be all you need, but in case you have a very large file, you can export it to a spreadsheet, where scripts and formulas can be used for editing and option to make CHIRP easier for blind and vision-impaired hams to use.

Overview

This keyboard is designed for use with the Ge'ez language of Eritrea and Ethiopia in Africa. Typing follows a consonant-vowel pattern. It is designed for use with a standard (QWERTY) keyboard.

Most computers will automatically download a special font to display this keyboard correctly. However, if the layout or the charts below do not display correctly, please read the troubleshooting guide.

Using this Keyboard

Quickstart

This keyboard is designed to work intuitively with a standard (QWERTY) keyboard. This means that the Ge'ez sounds in this keyboard can be found by thinking of the most similar English letters. For example, you can type selam to get ሰላም.

As you can see, each Ge'ez character is typed with the base consonant first and then the vowel. For example, ጘ is typed G then e.

Keyboard Details

The Ge'ez keyboard uses an intuitive phonetic system where the Ge'ez sounds are matched to the nearest English letters. You can think of how a word sounds in Ge'ez and then type it out with English.

Example: typing selam produces ሰላም

Because Ge'ez has more sounds than English, we sometimes have to adjust this rule. For example, English does not have ጠ and the closest similar letter would be t. In this case you should type T, for capital T:

Notice that we needed both ie together to make the 5th ጠ letter, ጤ. When the letter you want to type does not appear when you hit the similar sounding key in English, try using the capital next. If typing the capital does not work, then try hitting the key two times:

Next, when you need to type the extra letters of Ge'ez like ሏ,ሟ,ኴ you can do so by typing an extra vowel after a u:

Finally, we must introduce a special rule for ' (apostrophe). Some words are spelt with a ሳድስ (6th) letter followed by a vowel, like ርኤ in ገብርኤል. We use the apostrophe here to type gebr'iel to make sure we get ርኤ instead of ሬ. Super meat boy programming language.

We also use the apostrophe for Ethiopic numbers, so '1 becomes ፩ and so on. If an English apostrophe ' is needed in your document, type it twice: '. This works for other punctuation as well, so typing ; once makes ፤ and a second time gives English semi-colon ;.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that, if those games made so much money and they look so simple, well surely I could make a better one and make even more money, right? Probably not. Many of those games were released during the brief Steam Greenlight era, where the market wasn’t even a tenth of what it is now and your game could gain traction even without marketing.

That time has long passed, and while it’s still possible to make money from using RPGMaker, it’s a long, slow grind–definitely not for someone just looking to make a quick buck.

There are plenty of ‘modern’ commercially successful games made with RPG Maker, such as LISA or One Shot or To The Moon, but they’re the exception, not the norm. These games were made by people who already had an audience to begin with, not to mention years of experience, longer time frames and higher budgets. Or they just had a publisher.

Look through the list of games tagged RPGMaker on Steam and scroll past the first page. I imagine you’ll quickly find what the actual norm is – a veritable graveyard of passion projects and disillusioned developers thinking, what did I do wrong? Why doesn’t anyone want to play my game?

Just to use myself as an example, I played RPG Maker PSX for many years as a young teen, then spent many more months just fiddling with RPG XP, VX Ace, and finally MV before I decided to get serious. I probably had 3 years of RPG making experience when I started on my first commercial game, and that game took another 9 months to create and sell.

That game is about to hit its 2 year anniversary, and it still hasn’t passed $1,000 in gross revenue. Look around on the RPG Maker message boards and you’ll find that I’m not alone in having such poor sales for a first game release.

Thankfully, I enjoy RPG Making almost as I do playing video games, so it wasn’t hard for me to give it another go, and another after that – now my fifth game is releasing in a little under a month. I’ll likely have a sixth sometime early next year as well.

The question you have to ask yourself is, are you willing to put in that amount of effort? And would you be willing to accept that your years of hard work might only result in an extra cup of coffee here and there? If ‘yes’, then welcome aboard! Otherwise, you’re better off pursuing different game development software or a new hobby altogether.
