This book is now coming on 20 years since it’s debut in 1994. The author, a high school teacher at Bainbridge High School, worked on this historical novel for 10 years. When the idea for the novel started, it was 1984, only 3 years hence from the year In which the story unfolds. He wrote from the point of view of an outside-insider, a Pacific Northwest Islander, who was observing the events of 1942-1952. Japanese-American Bainbridge Islanders, were some of the first to be forcibly excluded, with very little warning, and incarcerated. Have you read this story? How well does it stand the test of time? Deeply researched, how did the author, who is not Japanese-American, capture the unrelenting impact that incarceration had on those who were forced from their homes, their neighbors, communities, and their families? Note: This book is on several banned book lists in the USA and Canada, for several reasons. #JapaneseAmerican #BannedBooks #Incarceration #OutsiderPOV #SnowFallingOnCedars #davidgutersonbook #exclusionact (at Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcEI995JTVN/?utm_medium=tumblr

From KCBS radio, “Gov. Gavin Newsom's pick for the state's vacated attorney general spot is ready to hit the ground running once he's confirmed by the legislature. Assemblymember Rob Bonta said Friday he wants have an immediate impact in a number of key areas; the most timely and critical being the rise in statewide attacks against Asian Americans, something he didn’t mince words in describing.” Asian American owned businesses throughout CA received letters from a San Bernardino postmark. Police are investigating. A recently widowed woman in Seal Beach also received a hand-written hate letter. #stopAAPIHate #stopaapihate✊🏻✊✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 #SanBernardinoHateMailPostmark #ProtectAAPIBusiness (at San Bernardino, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CM5vN8qABcJ/?igshid=1h2ont4y5viyp

This is how it’s done. I donated two weeks ago. Congressman Waters and Chu tried to stop the sale 5 years ago. The ICF has a small group cohort of elders who were promised bilingual bicultural services years ago. Women in their 80s, 90s, and two are over 100. They are WWII incarceration survivors. If you live in LA listen to the end to take action. Very important! #sakuraintermediatecarefacility #pacificacompanies #japaneseamericanhistoryisamericanhistory #japaneseamericanelders (at Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council) https://www.instagram.com/p/CL-1TYqA9yM/?igshid=rysnxb2ilapm

Many Japanese-Americans registered for the draft in 1940 only to be declared non-American and forced into incarceration in internment camps. Hidige Sugawara and his family lived near apple farms and on the same main road where the Enmanji Temple has been located since 1932. They rented the little farm house so after internment they did not have anything to return to and by 1945 had relocated to Cincinnati as noted his son Saburo’s draft registration card. Saburo played on the local Japanese-American baseball team, Sakura (see previous posts). The original photo of this local team in 1939 was incorrectly labeled as a visiting team from Japan. https://www.instagram.com/p/CCmVm__A_L8/?igshid=1uyk9q30j954q

Today is the seventh of July. Time for boys to write their wishes for better handwriting and girls for improved sewing. I wonder if children in Sonoma County did that in the 1930s. I hope if you have wonderful school photographs like this on from the Sonoma Library that you will donate it to the local library or historical society. They are treasures. Thank you to the Haventrite family. #contactus #japaneseamericaneducation #japaneseamerican #sonomacountyjapaneseamericanhistory #socojapaneseamericanoralhistoryproject #ono #kanemiono #tadashiono #tadono #johnono #yonemiono #bertoli #bettyhallburg #havenstrite #canyouidentifythem #gratoncalifornia #californiaapplegrowers #fruitfarmers #oakgrovegrammarschool #oakgroveelementarygratoncalifirnia #1934 #farmchildren #schoolchildren #irishamericanvolunteer☺️ (at Graton, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCXGjgbADSM/?igshid=1whefz1u2w5pk

Post a thumbs up if someone in your family would not exist if anti-miscegenation laws had not been struck down in 1967. This is my daughter. I am a Irish-Alsatian-American volunteer for the Sonoma County JACL Oral History Project. My daughter (and son) would not exist. Did you know that lawyers from the #JACL were involved in striking down #antimiscegenationlaws #japaneseamericanhistory #sonomacountyjapaneseamericanhistory #JACLlegalbattles #JACLlegalbattle https://www.instagram.com/p/CBXWWGPgn-G/?igshid=onae4fw3bddq

Peter Setsuo Masuoka was born in Sonoma County, raised in Sebastopol, California, and graduated from Analy High School. He had begun his studies at Santa Rosa Junior College when he and his family were forced to leave the farm they owned and were relocated and incarcerated in Amache, Colorado. His two older brothers had registered for the Army in 1940 while still in Sebastopol. His younger brother also registered. Peter was enlisted from camp and served in WWII with the most decorated 442 Regimental Combat Team. He was killed in action in France in 1944 His parents were notified of his death when they were still incarcerated. After the war, his parents returned to Sebastopol and are buried in Sebastopol Memorial Lawn. I tried to find his grave but he is interred in the armed services cemetery in San Bruno. His sister, Margaret Murakami received an honorary degree for Peter in 2011 from SRJC. #japaneseamericanwarheroes #japaneseamericanworldwarII #petermasuoka #442ndinfantry #442RTC #goforbroke #sebastopolcaliforniaveterenshall #japaneseamericanveterans #442ndregimentalcombatteam #santarosajuniorcollege #analyhighschool #margarettemurakami #silverstar #japaneseamericanskilledinaction #jacl #socojacloralhistory #euroamericanvolunteer (at Sebastopol, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAo3_FmgGrb/?igshid=yvk9pub5baqr
