Uncommon
Tumblr media
Week 1: Uncommon
What part of your relationship with God are you tempted to call common?
Scripture Focus: Acts 10
Connection Question: Share a time when you believed and asked God for something BIG and He came through. What does that answered prayer mean to you today?
God, and the way He loves, redeems, protects, provides, etc. for us, is anything but common. If we aren’t mindful, we will forget what we prayed for, believed for, dreamt for, and how He made those a reality in our lives. For some of us, we wanted to be financially stable, healthy, free from addictions or hangups- maybe He blessed you in that magnitude. But, it wasn’t always that way, He provided, you’re now living what you once hoped for, and that’s not common. Let’s encourage our students to see the awesomeness of God’s goodness and recall His faithfulness in our lives with awe and praise.
Week 2: Uncommon Work
Nothing God does is common.
Scripture Focus: Exodus 16 and Numbers 11
Connection Activity: (Below is a challenge that was given to your student in large group- we’d like you to consider doing it together along with the question.) When you and your student have some down time, ask the following, “As you are learning that God is at work every day, all around us, what are a couple of situations that you’ve seen Him in lately?”
Instructions from large group: Consider writing down at least 30 ways in which you can see God at work around you, or 30 things that you are thankful for, recognizing that God was a part of them.
Don’t forget your answers too! Your student can learn a lot from you, and as adults, and we can learn looking through their eyes as well. We all need to take time to be still and reflect on the work that God is doing in our country, communities, relationships, homes, and the list goes on. If you are searching for God, stop and look, He is all around.
Week 3: Uncommon Life
Jesus Himself lived an uncommon life.
Scripture Focus: Matthew 1
Connection Question: What are some of your favorite uncommon elements involved in the Christmas Story?
The coming of the Messiah into this world was long anticipated. He would come and be a King, sit in a palace, wear and do all the finest things, right? Nope. Think again Jewish scholars. From the beginning, nothing about Jesus’ birth was common. His birth, His lineage, His healings, all the way down to His resurrection, nothing He accomplished or did while man was “normal”. This Christmas season, let’s remember how overwhelmingly unique and awesome the long awaited, now reigning, Messiah truly is.
Gather Around Challenge:
To many, Christmas stirs a lot of different memories and emotions. The food, the gifts, maybe even the sting of past loved ones, all take our mind and hearts in all sorts of directions. We challenge you and your family to fix your eyes, in the midst of all the holiday charm, and put them on Jesus. Gather those near and dear to you and open up your Bibles to Luke 2, the Birth of Jesus. Have one person read aloud or take turns, whatever works for your group. The goal is to be close to one another and remember Who we are truly celebrating- Immanuel, God with Us. Merry Christmas everybody!
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

God’s Plan
Tumblr media
Week 1: Studying the Bible
God gave us His Word. What are you doing with it?
Scripture Focus: Psalm 19:7-11
Connection Question: Why is it so valuable to be consistently diving into God’s Word?
Pretty loaded question, right? We spend time doing things we see to be of value. There’s nothing higher than making the effort to search and study Scripture for ourselves. We take what the Bible reveals to us and then ask the Holy Spirit to help us act on it and show us how to live it out in our own lives.
Week 2: Serving
You have a gift. What will you do with it?
Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 12
Connection Question: How do you consider yourself gifted spiritually?
If we’ve experienced salvation, then we have the Holy Spirit and the gifts He has given us spiritually. Many believers have a hard time grasping what their gifts are until they journey to find out. So ask your student and see what they have to say. There are ways to help along the way: spiritual gifts test, affirmation from those who know your student (i.e. student pastor, small group leader), getting out there and serving to see which one’s spark a passion. Let’s help our students find out just how gifted they are and the huge impact that they are called to have on the Kingdom.
Week 3: Bonus Week (Thanksgiving Week)
A video will be posted on IGTV in place of service that night.
Connection Question: While your student is on break and probably relaxing (a little too much) ask, “What is one way you can practice a spiritual discipline (i.e reading the Word, praying, serving) over the holiday?”
The holiday season is a great time for serving, gratitude, and reflection. It’s also a time when your student may have some margin to focus in, and instead of forgetting what they’ve learned in the previous weeks, to apply it. Our community has a lot of service opportunities during this time of year. It is also a great time to draw close to God in thanksgiving. Whatever that may look like personally for your student, encourage them to find it.
Week 4: Prayer
Scripture Focus: Matthew 6:5-13 and Luke 11:1-4
Connection Question: What are some prayers goals you can set this week?
Prayer, like anything else in our world, can get lost in the battle of distraction. It’s sad to say, but as Christians we lose so much power and strength when we forget, or don’t, go to God in prayer. When we intentionally block out time and focus in, we can do what matters most, talk to our Father. He is always waiting to talk to us.
21-Day Challenge:
This month, we are going to do a 21 day Bible reading plan through the book of John as a ministry. We challenge you and your student to join in and read along with us! It’s fun and encouraging to do stuff together. Who knows? It may be a good way to get that hard to talk to teenager to open up and have some thought-provoking conversation around the dinner table. Enjoy!
You can find the challenge here: https://www.bible.com/reading-plans/817-john-reading-guide
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

Asking for a Friend
Tumblr media
Series bottom line: Jesus is my place of freedom.
Series Disclaimer: This series has the likelihood to bring with it more questions than we have answers. Not only that, but many of these topics have physical aspects as well as spiritual aspects to consider. Can Jesus overcome all of these? Yes. But, we are not going to speak from the stance of “if you do this, you experience freedom from this.” In a sense, we will be exploring how Jesus offers us freedom in Himself in the midst of our circumstances, even if we aren’t removed from our circumstances. As we teach your students, we will approach these topics knowing that we are not licensed counselors or mental health professionals. We are simply here to provide God’s perspective on the subjects according to Scripture.
Week 1: Anxiety and Depression
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 12:2 and Romans 12:12
Connection Question: In moments of trouble and anxiety, what are some ways you can shift your focus and choose to have faith instead?
Tough times and seasons of waiting will come. Some are darker and longer than others. But what if we guided our students to have faith in these moments instead of focusing on everything we think is wrong with us or our situation at the moment? There is no doubt that these things are unbearably hard at times, but God does not waste a single thing, and even in moments like these, He is there- we can keep going thanks to His power at work in us.
 Week 2: Loneliness and Abandonment
Scripture Focus: Isaiah 53:1-3, Hebrews 4:15, and John 14:16, 26
Connection Question: Create some margin for time alone with your student, then ask, “How can you and I better connect with each other on a regular basis?”
This question seems simple enough, but it is massively purposeful. How many times are we rushing from work to practice to recitals, etc. and hardly have meaningful connections even with those inside of our own homes? Even family dinners are hurried and filled with cell phones ringing and televisions blaring. Let’s slow down. Pause. Put the parenting breaks on. We live in a culture where it’s never been so easy to communicate with each other but the most real connections have been lost. Feelings of loneliness are at an all-time high. But not in our homes - not anymore. Let’s start now.
Week 3: Addiction and Unforgiveness
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 4:31-32
Connection Question: Share a time with your student when you forgave someone (maybe even when you didn’t want to). Now ask, “What helps you to forgive others even when it is really hard to do?”
This question may be easy for your student or it may be one that they struggle with or are currently walking through. Forgiveness isn’t for the other person, it’s for them- for freedom. It is also a sign of spiritual maturity, so let’s be gracious, promote peace, and let their voice be heard. Let’s encourage them to seek unity so that they can move on into the bright, open future that God has for them and their relationships.
Week 4: Unrepentant Sins
Scripture Focus: John 4:1-42
Connection Question: When you feel convicted about something, what do you think God is usually trying to show you?
In this series, your student learned that we experience convictions to remind us that Jesus is enough, to recall His unique love for us, and to lead us to freedom in Christ. Simply put, we are Christians and we are not perfect, but we are fiercely loved and sought after. God does want to see us become the best versions of ourselves that we can be and a huge part of that is being obedient, turning away from the sin in our lives so that we can be close to Him. This is a lifelong journey. Remind your student that where they’re at is okay (no guilt) but they can’t stay there. God wants so much more for them than that.
FREEDOM CHALLENGE:
During the past four weeks, your student has learned that Jesus is their freedom. There is simply nothing that He can’t redeem, restore, or rebuild. After all, that’s what the cross was for, to build the bridge for us back to God.
We encourage you to ask your student what area(s) God revealed that they need freedom in after what they’ve experienced through this series. Whether it be…
Freedom from Depression or Anxiety
Freedom from Loneliness and Rejection
Freedom from Addiction or Unforgiveness
Freedom from Unrepented Sin (…we all have something we need to lay down and let Jesus free us from).
They can plaster verses throughout their room that help inspire them.
They can pray for God to send them new, encouraging friends.
They can speak truths over the lies that others have put in their minds.
They can stop doing the same thing that keeps making them miserable.
They can forgive that person who hurt them.
They can choose to have joy in the waiting.
Whatever it is that “they can” do, they need to do it with Jesus’ help not their own. Help them walk through what is holding them back and hurting them. Pray for them. Graciously encourage them. Believe in them. Allow them to be vulnerable. With love, support, and a whole lot of Jesus, your student can live in the fullness and freedom that’s available to them.
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to mailto:[email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

Tumblr media
Week 1: You Have All You Need
Jesus is enough.
Scripture Focus: John 18:29-37, 19:10
Connection Question: If you knew you couldn’t fail, what are some things you would do?
Fear is a paralyzer. Over-caring about what others think of us is like running in quicksand - it gets you nowhere. The truth is our students are enough because, if they know Jesus, He is enough. Let’s challenge them to see that.
Week 2: It’s Up To You
Who is determining the course of your life?
Scripture Focus: Mark 15:6-15
Connection Question: Listen for a moment when your student is “following the crowd’s” opinions or thoughts (this could be a comment on social media down to where their friends want to go hangout and they may not agree) and ask, “Why is it more important to stand on your own than follow what the masses do?”
It doesn’t take a lot of work for us to go with the flow instead of going against the current. Before you know it, you look in the mirror and don’t even know who you are other than who others told you to be. We want to have our students shake up their way of thinking and own it!
Week 3: Not My Problem
No response is still a response. What will your response be?
Scripture Focus: Matthew 27:22-25, Luke 23:4-12
Connection Question: Name a situation that happened recently that you could could care less about. Then, think of another situation that happened you cared a lot about. What was different in your responses?
The truth is we all have things that we are passionate about and those that we are not, people that we love and people that annoy us, things we consider fun and those we consider a bore. The one thing we cannot do as Christians is be passive. In each situation, we are to be like Jesus. While we may not be able to save the world, we can be good listeners and move when He tells us to - we are called to be people of action.
Week 4: The Hard Choice
A life of faith isn’t easy, it’s better.
Scripture Focus: Luke 23:18-25, Matthew 26:36-39
Connection Question: When was the last time you had to make a hard decision and follow your faith instead of what was easy?
If Jesus chose surrender, we can expect that as His followers we will be called to do the same, but it’s worth it! We’d like our students to push back against the choices they’ve made and see where they should have followed God instead, not to provoke guilt or shame, but as valuable lessons for next time.
Pushing Back Challenge:
Each week during this series, we want our students to push back. Back against the mold they may be following, the lies that they can’t make a difference, and the fight for what’s popular instead of what’s holy.
How it works: Every week we want to challenge your student to retrain their brain and their actions and do ONE thing that goes against the norm for them. Whether that is trying out for that team, beginning to search for godly friends instead of the popular ones, or just taking “what they said was true” and researching it for themselves. Your student will know the areas of their life where they need to push back - make it fun but not comfortable. Encourage your student by letting them know they are enough and that it is okay to stand out apart from the crowd - no one ever made a difference there anyway.
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

6th Grade Curriculum - Wired
Tumblr media
Week 1: We are Wired by God
The image of God is all around us.
Scripture Focus: Genesis 1:1
Connection Question: Talk about a time when you knew that God was using another person/thing to reveal Himself to you. Then ask your student, “Tell me of a time when you knew God was revealing Himself to you in your everyday life?”
God is omnipresent, meaning He can be everywhere with everyone all at once. That’s supernatural to think about and maybe a new concept for your student. As believers, there are no coincidences in life just God orchestrating and making Himself known to us. That could be through another person’s affirmation, in the way we view nature, and possibly even meeting a need we had in His perfect timing- the ways He reveals Himself to us are endless. (Your student may be in the beginning stages of trying to make their faith their own and that’s awesome- encourage them to open their eyes to the ways God may be moving all around them.)
Week 2: We are Wired Uniquely
God loves you exactly as you are.
Scripture Focus: Matthew 22:37-39 and 1 John 3:1
Connection Question: Begin the conversation by sharing with your student some qualities that you believe make them unique. Now ask,  “After hearing all these awesome traits you have, how can you confidently walk in them?”
Middle school can be a challenging time for students. There are a lot of transitions going on and sometimes they may feel like everyone is looking at them and they stick out like a sore thumb. Let’s remind our students how awesome they are not only because they are wonderfully unique, but they are created in the image of God. Everyone needs to have life breathed into them, and our students are no different especially as they are trying to discover who they are as an individual.
Week 3: We are Wired for Community
Our relationships with other people are good and important, but can sometimes be messy.
Scripture Focus: Genesis 2:18 and Matthew 22:37-40
Connection Question: What are some ways you can be more intentional in loving those around you?
The only person who ever lived that was perfect at loving others was Jesus; the rest of us need some work. Fortunately for us, God helps us and softens our hearts to love others (even the difficult ones) if we are open and available for Him to do the heavy lifting. One of the best ways to begin loving others better is loving and knowing God better first. The more we experience God, the more He flows through us and we are able to sacrifice our self- centeredness for His sacrificial love. The Bible says if we say we love God but hate others, we are liars. Let’s encourage our students to look outside of themselves and find ways to bless and forgive others!
GET WIRED CHALLENGE:
During these first couple of weeks at FPS for your student, we’d like to keep the excitement going with a challenge! The season is getting closer to changing which means the weather is becoming crisper and the foliage is on full display, why not go for a walk?! Through this series, we taught the students about their Creator Who specially wired them and the creation that surrounds them.
We challenge you and your student to go for a walk or hike and point out elements in nature that inspire you and make you stand in awe of the Creator. The region we live in has some amazing options, have fun, and see why the Bible says even the heavens declare His glory and the skies proclaim the work of His hands (Psalm 19:1-4).
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

Goliath Must Fall
Tumblr media
Week 1: Goliath Must Fall Introduction
What’s your giant?
Scripture Focus:1 Samuel 17:8-11, 24
Connection Question: Equipped with your own sling and stones, how can you aim and slay the giant(s) you are facing?
This week, we spoke about the legendary battle between David and Goliath. Your student learned that with Jesus you can defeat the giants in your life but you have to first identify what they are and then take bold action steps to slay them. With Jesus, grit, and focus, we believe students can move towards freedom from their giants!
Week 2: Fear Must Fall
Let go and let God take control.
Scripture Focus:1 Samuel 17:1-11, Matthew 6:25-34, and Psalm 3:1-5, 16:8-9
Connection Question: When a situation arises this week and your student is feeling anxious or fearful ask, “How can you take what you are currently feeling and adapt to a ‘fear not’ attitude instead?”
Fear is paralyzing and will hold us back from our full potential. Simply put, fear is not of God. We want to challenge the fears that keep our students entangled and approach them knowing that God IS able, God is in control, and God wants what’s best for them. A “fear not” attitude let’s go, keeps moving, and allows God to move like only He can!
Week 3: Who is David?
No matter the size of your giant, only Jesus can defeat it.
Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 17:32-37
Connection Question: Discuss a time with your student when you had a big problem and tried to deal with it on your own. Then, share a story when you let God do the heavy lifting. Explain the different outcomes. Then ask, “How can you get the strength you need from God to deal with the problems you’re facing?”
During our study this week, we discussed that there is no giant too big or small for God and He will always be bigger than the giants they face. The key is we have to let Him in and it can only be done because of what Jesus has already accomplished for us on the cross. Through Jesus, our battle is already won!
Week 4: Comfort Must Fall
The life God has for you isn’t found in your own comfort zone.
Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 17:16,26
Connection Question: Where can you press in and make your faith journey one of adventure instead of just playing it safe?
Faith is believing and trusting in God. We can’t practice true faith when we won’t follow His lead and be faithful in what He calls us to do. Many times what God asks us to do is far outside of anything we could ever dream or imagine doing ourselves. He asks us to do these things so we will bring glory to Him by showing others Him working through us and so we can walk fully in the purpose He has for our lives. Following Jesus isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. As a Christian, it’s the only way to live your best life and we must keep stretching and growing.
Goliath Must Fall Devotional Challenge:
To finish out our series, we are challenging every student to commit to the 7 day “Goliath Must Fall Devotional Challenge” to close strong. On the YouVersion Bible app, there is a devotional plan called Goliath Must Fall that they can use. We would like to invite you to participate in the devotional challenge with your student and/or hold them accountable along the way!
Here’s how it works:
Each morning, we will be posting a video on the global social media account with a thought from one of our staff members about that day. Then, we will encourage the students to read the Scripture and devotional found on the app.
Ultimately, when our lives are aligned with God, we are then able to see Him defeating our giants as we partner with Him. One way to stay aligned with God is to connect with Him regularly. Will you join us in seeking God every morning, the only One who is able to defeat your giants?
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

6th Grade Curriculum - Best Night of the Week
Tumblr media
Week 1: Why We Gather
If we bring what we are told God always holds up his end of the bargain!
Scripture Focus: Hebrew 11:1 and Ephesians 3:20
Connection Question: What personally do YOU need to bring to the table so that FPS is your favorite night of the week?
We are so excited to have the opportunity to pour into your students! It’s truly a privilege and we’d like to see them maximize their time with us. At FPS, we exist to help real people, with real problems, find real love. Encourage your student to be themselves here knowing that it’s a safe, uplifting environment where God is moving and motivate them to invite other students in on the action!
Week 2: Why We Preach
If God can use his word to create the world, he can use this word to create the life that he died to give you! You will find the blueprints here every week!
Scripture Focus: Genesis 1:1-5, John 1:1-5 and Hebrews 1:1-3
Connection Question: On Wednesday before your student heads to FPS ask, “What are you hoping to get from God’s Word tonight?”
Just like we adults need a fresh word from God, our students do too! After all,His Word is our daily bread. Each week, your student will be taught by their student pastor and in small group from the Bible and we’d like for them to come in ready to receive the message that God has for them! While your student’s response to this question may not be deep, let’s prepare their mind and heart to expect that God has a special word for them every Wednesday night!
Week 3: Why We Group
God’s best for you is in a FP student group! You were not made to do life alone!
Scripture Focus: Genesis 2, Psalm 133, John 13:34-35 and Hebrews 10:24-25
Connection Question: How can you love and encourage the people in your small group this school year?
At FPS, we believe that the best things in life are done in groups. The people in your student’s small group may not be too familiar with each other now, but overtime they will be. They will walk through all sorts of obstacles and victories together (breakups, fights, acing a test, the sometimes awkward middle school years, salvations, and so on.) Let’s start now by encouraging our students to speak life, truth, and love over each other!
THE BEST NIGHT OF THE WEEK CHALLENGE:
During these first couple of weeks at FPS for your student, we’d like to keep the excitement going with a challenge! We desire for students to get pumped about coming to FPS every week, not just to hangout but to be anchored here. Being seen, loved, and appreciated is such a big part of that and it can be found in community.
We would like for you to inspire your student to bring one unchurched friend (or more) to a FPS night and also reach out to (call or text) one person weekly in their small group with encouragement that they don’t know well yet. Outside of learning and growing deeper in their faith, people are the most important part of ministry. Let’s work together and help our students unite as a family while welcoming others in through the love of Jesus!
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

My Movement
Tumblr media
Week 1: Move Groups Pt. 1 – Connect with God
God is waiting and ready to connect with you.
Scripture Focus: Acts 17:24-28
Connection Question: What are practical ways you can connect with God in every area of your life?
It’s easy for our students to feel connected to God at conferences, camps, and church services, but what about the in-between times? God desires for us to connect with Him consistently, joyfully, and honestly. Encourage your student to have the everyday type of faith that will produce the type of fruit that only comes  from a strong, personal relationship with Jesus; the type of faith that will last.
Week 2: Move Groups Pt. 2 – Connect with Others
God is waiting and ready for you to connect with others.
Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 18-19
Connection Question: As you hear your student talking about hanging out with their friends ask, “How can you and your friends create opportunities like these to startup or be part of a Move Group?”
During Movement, we encouraged the students to be part of Move Groups. These groups are simply student small groups of 3 or more who meet in their schools consistently to connect with God and each other. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says that “a cord of three strands is not quickly broken”. We want to encourage each student in FPS to walk strong with God and with others, because together we are strong and able to create a movement to impact the Kingdom and one another.
CONNECTION CHALLENGE:
At Movement and post-Movement, we have encouraged your student to connect with God and others consistently, joyfully (have fun), and honestly. We want to encourage you to join in on the challenge!
Simply find ways for you and your student to practice these steps in new, enjoyable ways. For example:
Consistently- hold each other accountable for reading the Bible daily for 21 days straight, beginning a prayer journal, or to spend 10 minutes daily in worship.
Fun- Bible journal together, play some ball and then take a break to discuss how God is moving in each of your lives, or invite some of their friends over for a Move Group.
Honestly- lovingly guide your student to hand their real self and situations to God. Encourage them to go to God with their wins and defeats- to run to Him before anyone or anything else.
Have fun and get creative! We are praying that by the end of this challenge your student will learn the with God and others, they can enjoy and flourish in anything that life throws their way.
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

In-N-Out Pt. 2
Tumblr media
We are continuing our summer series with part 2 of “In-N-Out.” During “In-N-Out” we will be showing our students how Jesus has empowered them to invite people “in” to the church and take their story “out” with them wherever they go.
Week 1: We tell them of Him
Scripture Focus: Acts 1:1-8
Connection Question: Before your student heads out the door ask, “What action can you take today to tell others more about Jesus?
As Christians, we can overcomplicate the gospel. We are sometimes timid that others will not welcome it or that we may lack the knowledge to answer questions they may have. The honest truth is we don’t have to have it all together, we just have to share the love of Jesus. Sometimes it’s our actions that tell others of Him, and other times it is an open door for witnessing to someone; God will guide us, we just have to be available.
Week 2: The Purpose of your Story
Scripture Focus: Acts 8:1-6
Connection Question: What are some struggles you’ve gone through lately that God can use for good?
Life happens. It doesn’t pick and choose, rough things happen to us all. As believers, we can use these humbling experiences to help point ourselves and others to Jesus. Students can struggle with self-focus and failure. Encourage your student to look outside of their circumstances and instead rise above them to see how God may be trying to use them instead. Someone out there may need to hear what they have to say.
STORY TIME CHALLENGE:
Over this series, your student has learned that they have a story that God wants to use for His glory. We have taught it, now we encourage you to help us apply it. As Christ-followers we’ve all been there. What is my testimony? What parts do I leave in and which ones do I take out? Is there a time limit? Is it my whole life story?
Let’s declutter these overwhelming questions with our students. Pick a one-on-one time over dinner or their favorite Starbucks beverage, and hear their side of the story. Help them see how God can use their scars and turn them into stars. That way when the opportunity arises for them to share what God has done they will be confident and ready to share!
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

This will be a two part series. During “in-n-out” we will be showing our students how Jesus has empowered them to invite people “in” to the church and take their story “out” with them wherever they go.
Week 1: Welcome to ______ .
Welcome to the family.
Scripture Focus: Luke 17:20-23
Connection Question: This Summer, what can you do to help bring unity to those around you?
Summer is a time for students to chill and relax…sometimes too much. When boredom sets in, so can drama. We want our students to be mindful that being part of the church is a 24/7 calling- through Jesus we are one. Also, we need to be aware of those around us that don’t have a church family yet and invite them in.
Week 2: You first
Jesus has called me to live a “you first” life.
Scripture Focus: Luke 9:23 and Matthew 22:36-40
Connection Question: As your student begins their day, challenge them with this question: “How can you practice a ‘you first’ attitude today?”
In this series, your student is learning what it truly means to put others first. Remind them that putting other people first isn’t just about being caring and doing good deeds; it’s about pointing others back to the Truth and the One Who gave it all for them.
Week 3: Whatever it Takes
Even if _______, I will do whatever it takes.
Scripture Focus: Mark 2:1-12
Connection Question: “During this week, when will you replace your wants with Kingdom willpower?”
Help us encourage our students by helping them to see that pressing in for the Kingdom is not only necessary, it’s vital. Their friends, family, teammates and co-workers need Jesus. Inviting people to church can be awkward, but they must keep pressing in. Having faith and planting seeds through sharing the gospel can be uncomfortable, but they must keep pressing in. There is a world that needs what we have and we must be doing whatever it takes to leave an eternal impact on those around us.
“BRING THEM IN” CHALLENGE:
Summer is setting in not just for your student’s life, but in your reality as a parent. Through this series, we have empowered your student to invite others “in” to the church and to take their stories “out” wherever they go. We would like to challenge you to encourage your student to do just that! Invite others in! Summertime can be an easy way to bend the schedule just a bit. Have your students invite a friend (or three) to FPS on Wednesday and then, “bring them in” to your home for a sleepover, game night, or movie night. Or do the fun activities, and then bring them to one of FP’s weekend church services. Let’s “bring them in” and have a little fun doing it too!
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

Just One More
Tumblr media
Week 1: Bind the Strong Man
I can bind the strong man, because I have the power of the strongest Man in me.
Scripture Focus: Mark 3:27 and Matthew 4:1-11
Connection Question: When faced with temptation, how can you respond like Jesus did when He was tempted in the wilderness?
Standing strong in faith often means that you refuse to compromise what’s easy for what’s best. Your student is learning that even though they may like something, feel as if they deserve it, or even feel like they can control it, it doesn’t make it true. We need to stand strong in following after God, resist anything that may derail us from our purpose, and follow Jesus’ example when it comes to temptation.
Week 2: Compromise in Faith
Don’t compromise on what you want most for what you want now.
Scripture Focus: Genesis 16:1-16
Connection Question: During the week when your student is growing impatient with their circumstances (ex. extra money burning a hole in their pocket, putting it in cruise control until summer break, etc.) pause and ask, “How can you shift your perspective from wanting it now, to enjoying where God has you today?”
We all have a microwave mentality in situations that we are not very fond of. The sooner it’s over, the better. But if we aren’t careful, we will miss what God is trying to do for us and through us in that moment. Encourage your student to slow down, be thankful, and be unwavering when it comes to finding something to praise God for each and every day.
Week 3: Compromise in Speech
I don’t have to compromise speaking life, because the life of Jesus lives in me.
Scripture Focus: John 18, Acts 2, and Proverbs 18:21
Connection Question: Before your student heads out the door in the morning ask, “What are some ways you can go out and speak life over those you come in contact with today?” Bonus - at the end of the day, ask them to share how it went!
The power of the tongue is no joke! We need to encourage our students to be positive and life-giving when it comes to choosing how they speak to others. You never know what someone is facing, and you may just be the vessel that the Lord is using to help brighten someone’s day.
Week 4: Compromise in Purity
I don’t have to compromise in the fight for purity, because the fight lives in me me.
Scripture Focus: 2 Samuel 2:11
Connection Question: How can you set boundaries in your heart that help you stay pure and ready for God’s best for you?
This isn’t solely focusing on purity in relationships. Each of us has a pet sin or an area of weakness where we have to safeguard ourselves to not fall into the trap it sets for us. Purity takes practice and discipline. Encourage your student by letting them know that they are not alone or a victim to sin. They are overcomers. But, it always helps to be on alert for when the enemy tries to catch us on an off day, because have no doubt, he’ll try his best. Help your student succeed by having a plan.
QUITTERS CHALLENGE:
Welcome to the Quitters Challenge! Each Thursday during this series, we challenge you to quit something. For example: if your student has a habit of speaking negatively, challenge them to zip it. Maybe they need to stop spending three hours a day on Instagram, and narrow it down to 30 minutes. Let’s cheer them on as they lay down empty habits to make room for what’s best! Go the extra mile and offer them a trip for their favorite treat if they accomplish their goals- we all enjoy a little motivation, right?!
We’d like to hear from you! If these parent challenges have blessed you, we’d love to know. Please send any stories or fun experiences you’ve had with your student during these challenges to [email protected]! We appreciate you and all that you do to help our student ministry!

I AM
Tumblr media
Week 1: I am in Christ + I am Alive
Because I Am is in me, I am alive.
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:1-7 and Romans 8:9-11
Connection Question: What actions can you take today to elevate your walk with Jesus from good → great and dead → alive?
Our Jesus journeys are a marathon not a sprint. While it’s a process, it also requires action and intentionality. Encourage your student to continue to press in and grow deeper in their walk. Here are some ways to help guide them: getting in the Word more, being kinder, having a positive mindset, surrender specific patterns of sin, and engaging and loving those around them (even strangers).
Week 2: I am Forgiven
Because I Am is in me, I am forgiven.
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:1-10 and John 19:28- 30
Connection Question: Share a time with your student where you either had to forgive someone or forgive yourself. Then ask, “Why do you believe it’s important to live life with an forgiving attitude?”
Leading by example has a huge influence on our students, and influence starts at the top. Maybe your student will in return share an area where they struggle with forgiveness and maybe they won’t. However, allowing them to see you vulnerable and honest will send the message that’s it’s safe to admit that forgiveness is something that we all wrestle with at times. To have a  victorious walk with Christ, forgiveness must be a spiritual discipline that we all regularly practice.
Week 3: I am Near to God
Because I Am is in me, I am near to God.
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:11-13 and Hebrews 10:19-22
Connection Question: When the week is in full swing and your student is trying keep up, take a minute to ask,”With all the distractions you’re facing, how can you pause, be still, and draw near to God?”
Distractions don’t discriminate. We all have a to-do list or responsibilities we must accomplish - students are no different. The enemy uses distractions to keep us tailspinning and out of touch with God. Encourage your student to lean into the Father. Even is it’s just listening to worship music in the shower, a simple prayer, or 5-minutes in the Word, we must run on the Holy Spirit’s power not our own.
Week 4: I am a Child of God
Because I Am is in me, I am a child of God.
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:14-22 and Matthew 3:17, 17:5
Connection Question: Since God sees the best in you, how can you in return begin to believe the best about yourself?
Your identity is firmly established as a Child of God if you have accepted Jesus. However, to walk in victory and who He says we are is something we have to commit to daily. Our potential and calling is maximized when we begin to view ourselves based on what Scripture says, no what our inner self says.

Knockout: Crushing your Calling Killers
Tumblr media
Week 1: Victim Mentality
Count me in, again and again.
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 10:39
Connection Question: Ask your student to recall the last time they tried to play the victim and placed blame on someone else instead of taking responsibility. Then simply ask, “How could you have owned this situation better?”
As parents, we already see from the outside in as to what choices our students should have made. This isn’t an attempt to lecture or correct, but more of a time for self-application for your student. When we can learn from our mistakes instead of repeating them, it is a win. A lot of times people with a victim mentality don’t even realize the habit they are in. Let’s take this time to lovingly help coach our student so they are set up for future success!
Week 2: Sizing up your Opponent (Labels and Comparison)
A label may describe you, but your identity in Christ defines you.
Scripture focus: Hebrews 12:1-3
Connection Question: Throughout this week, listen for labels your student places on themselves (ex. “I can’t do it!”, “I’m not good enough”, etc.). When you hear these cues ask, “I understand you may feel that way, but who does God say you are?”
Students are SO hard on themselves. They are trying to discover who they are, their purpose, all the while the thief of comparison is trying to rob them of their uniqueness and calling. When we aren’t comfortable in our own skin it sabotages our potential. Let’s replace those liar labels with godly ones. Remind your student how wonderful and beautifully imperfect they are! Not because of who they are but Whose they are!
Week 3: 1/2 Speed
If you want to reach 1/2 your potential, just go 1/2 speed.
Scripture Focus: Revelation 3:15-16
Connection Question: As your student heads to school in the morning, encourage them by asking, “How can you show others Jesus today?”
Let’s face it, most mornings students are rushing out of the house because they’ve slept until the last possible second, possibly distracted by relationships, or focused on all those assignments that may be stacking up. Take this opportunity to help them set the tone for the day and encourage them to invite Jesus in. Your student is a light not just on Wednesday nights but each and every day.
Crush the Calling Killers Challenge
Throughout this series, your student will learn that when they own their part, walk boldly in their identity in Christ, and place faith over fear, they are unstoppable. Let’s join them in these revelations and cheer them on!
Each day we challenge you to stick a note (it can be a post-it or you can get creative) to their bedroom door. These notes need to reflect the things you love about your student and what God calls them as part of His royal priesthood. Rip the labels off that the world has tried to put on them, and replace them with the right ones. Imagine how encouraged your student will be when they see all of those adding up. It’s going to be incredible! Have fun! Together we can crush the calling killers!

Closer: Relationships Both Near and Far
Tumblr media
Week 1: Border Breakers
Distance = Distortion, Proximity = Passion
Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 13:1-3,7 and Acts 9:1-22
Connection Question: In what ways can you go out and connect with people you normally wouldn’t interact with this week?”
We all struggle with getting outside of our comfort zone in relationships. Familiar friendships and faces make it easy for us to have enough interaction with others without having to put forth much effort. Jesus loves all people regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or creed, and we are called to do the same. When your student steps out and begins to welcome someone unique to them, they can begin to see the world through someone else’s eyes and realize we are not so different after all.
Week 2: The “To Be” List + Panel Discussion
We can’t always have what we want, but we grow anyways.
Scripture Focus: 2 Peter 3:17-18
Connection Question: "On this Valentine’s Day, what God-given gifts (talents or abilities) do you love most about yourself?"
After your student shares some with you, share some that you love about them too! It is important for students to understand that they must operate in the unique grace that God has lovingly tailored just for them, instead of trying to find their identity in other people. While Valentine’s Day is just another day, it can be hard and misleading for some. Those who are not in a relationship may be down or feel awkward, while others who are in relationships may get too engrossed in the details. Show your student that they are growing into a man/ woman of God that deserves the best just the way they are.
Week 3: Right Fight
Be caught fighting the right fight.
Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 13:5
Connection Question: When you notice your student having a less than perfect day, ask: “How can you take this current fight (situation) and choose to see it God’s way over your own way?”
This question isn’t geared so much towards correction as it is application. It doesn’t matter if you are a new Christian or if you have been following Jesus for years, at times we all need loving accountability. At one time or another, we can get sidetracked when things are not going our way or the way we had planned. Sometimes it's a shift in perspective that can help lead to better choices. And those wise choices result in God getting all the glory!
Week 4: Fusion Recap
MONTH OF LOVE CHALLENGE:
February is the month of love, so that’s what we want to challenge our students to do. LOVE! During this series they have learned (1) it is impossible to love people from a distance, (2) to focus on qualities they need to grow in and not the qualities they want others to possess, and (3) how to gracefully love people up close. ***We challenge you to encourage your student to complete one love action from each of three topics they have learned. Be as creative as you want to be, but for inspiration we will share some ideas to get you started below. Remember, love is not words, love is action! Have fun!
Get closer
Invite someone new to sit with you at lunch
Write a letter to a custodian and say thank you
Ask 3 people you don’t know how their day is going
Focus on yourself
No more negative self-talk, only speak positively about yourself for a whole week
Pick one quality you’d like to improve about yourself and work on it this month
Love up close
Call your grandparents to just say hello
Make a list of your friend’s 3 best qualities and give it to them
Volunteer to do a chore that isn’t yours

Realest
Tumblr media
Week 1: Ownership
FPS is not a ministry FOR you, FPS is a ministry WITH you.
Scripture focus: Genesis 2 and Isaiah 43:18-19
Connection Question: Before your student attends FPS on Wednesday, ask the following question: How can you make FPS a better place where real students, with real problems, can find real love?
The desire behind this question is to make students aware that Wednesday nights are more than a place to take a mid-week break and socialize. Yes, we desire for them to feel at home and enjoy their time together but it's a much bigger picture than that. FPS is only as great as the students within it want it to be. And, the more our students own the ministry, the more people will come, and the more others will experience the love of Jesus.
Week 2: Relationships
It's not real if it's not messy.
Scripture focus: Genesis 2:18 and John 13
Connection Question: What can you do in your relationships to love more like Jesus, no matter the cost?
Students thrive off of examples. Consider sharing a time when you graciously loved someone until the end (whether they deserved it or not). Relationships are beautiful and messy, afterall we are just human. Thankfully, we have the perfect example of how to treat others through Jesus and God's grace to cover us all.
Week 3: Rest
God wants us to rest from our activity so we can rest in His ability.
Scripture focus: Genesis 2:1-3 and Matthew 11:28-29
Connection Question: Where are the areas in your life that you need to start resting and trusting in God's ability instead of your own?
We are all guilty of trying to prove ourselves to both people and God. From popularity to grades, students face a lot of pressure to be “enough”. But with God, His love and acceptance isn't conditional. He wants us just the way we are! Encourage your student to work hard and play hard while living within God's will for their life. We serve a good God Who is capable of far greater things than we could ever imagine. Let's rest in His greatness!
Week 4: The Weekend
FPS is the battery of Faith Promise.
Scripture focus: 1 Timothy 4:11-13 and 1 Corinthians 1:26-29
Connection Question: How can you be a world-changer where God has placed you?
The next generation gets a bad rap from our culture. Let's choose to speak life and potential into our students instead of stereotyping them. One way we can do this is by helping our students to see the gifts that God has placed in them and how to put those gifts into action right where they are. It can be as small as sitting with another student who is sitting alone at lunch to launching their own business. Revivals and great movements of God have been ignited by teenagers. Every student is unique, but they are all capable of making an impact on this world for the glory of God!
MONTHLY CHALLENGE: This month we would like to hear you speak life and encouragement over your student! DAILY speak positive, loving words over them before they head off to school or out with friends. Maybe your student has an area that they are insecure about, begin to speak truth over those areas and drown out the lies. For example: if your daughter is struggling with low self-worth, say: “You are beautiful and your worth is far more precious than rubies! I can't wait to see how God uses you today!” You know your student best, have fun with it, and see the huge smile that lights up their face with just a few words of encouragement!

Looking Back, Pressing Forward
Tumblr media
Week 1: How to Move on from Something.
The key to moving forward: Choosing what you know over what you feel.
Scripture focus: Philippians 3:1-14 and Jeremiah 29:11
Connection Question: This semester is rapidly coming to a close for your student. Find an intentional moment to ask: What were some of the wins and defeats that you experienced this semester?
Right now your student is probably stressed about upcoming finals and getting ready to clock-out for the long break ahead. If they aren't careful, they will approach the upcoming year allowing life to happen by chance without absorbing what they just walked through. Taking a minute to reflect with your student. This may be the opportunity they need to recall the ways they grew over the past year and bring to light some areas that need improvement.
 Week 2: Personal Growth Plan.
Real growth will not happen without goals to help accomplish them.
Connection question: In what ways are you hoping 2018 will look differently than 2017?
We encourage you to create a personal growth plan for yourself and then to sit down with your student as they fill out their own. Nothing in life should just happen. Each year is a chance to better ourselves and those around us. Encourage your student to create tangible, realistic goals that will help them grow in the upcoming year.
If you are looking for a place to start on your personal growth plan, check out Pastor Chris’s growth plan template on http://drchrisstephens.com.

MONTHLY CHALLENGE: We encourage you to take a pause from the chaotic holiday season and host a family evening that is focused solely on you and the ones you love! This season isn't just about shopping and resolutions, it's about love and reflection. Spend it with those you love the most by having a family movie night in, or going out and performing random acts of kindness, etc. Choose an activity that the whole family can participate in and will enjoy!

Do Not Disturb
Tumblr media
 Week 1: Why We Worship
We are wired to worship. What are you worshiping?
Scripture focus:  Exodus 32:1-8
Connection Question: Before your student heads out for an activity or while you are driving them to their next event, ask the following question: Why is it important to worship God while you are out doing things that you enjoy?
As Christ-followers, we carry Jesus with us everywhere we go. And, we should try our best to bring glory to His name in everything we do. If your student is an athlete heading out to a game,  they can worship God by being a team-player. Maybe it's before a date, they can worship God by maintaining their purity and making smart choices in their relationship, etc.
Week 2: How We Worship
God’s love language is praise.
Scripture focus: Psalm 34:1, 50:23, 63:3-4, 103:1, and 138:1
Connection Question: What are some of your favorite ways to worship God?
People worship God in a variety of ways. Each person is different. God simply asks for us to come, to surrender our hearts, and to be poured out before Him. Take this time to listen for cues from your student concerning their comfort level during worship. If they feel self-conscious during worship, gently remind them that they may be focusing on themselves in that moment instead of God. Where the Lord is there is freedom- especially in worship.
 Week 3: Gratitude
The unstoppable life is made in gratitude.
Scripture focus: Hebrews 4:14-16
Connection Question: Where are some areas in your life that you need to inject more of an attitude of gratitude?
God brings freedom and the enemy brings restriction. When we feel restricted, we feel stuck and discontented. It is important for your student to know that God wants to accomplish unbelievable things in their life but it has to begin with them having a grateful heart.
Monthly Challenge: In celebration of November being the Month of Thanks, we challenge you to tell your student at least one thing per day that makes you thankful for them. You may never know what a simple “thankful” compliment can do in the life of your student. It may even challenge them to practice sharing their gratitude with others too!
