RIP Ozzy
"I heard the news today, oh boy..."
I read in Ozzy's book, that I gifted to my sister on her birthday, that one of Ozzy's favorite bands was the Beatles; and upon hearing the news of Ozzy's passing, it felt appropriate.
It sounds corny to say, but I truly would not be the person I am today without John "Ozzy" Osbourne, my earliest music memories were a mix of Beatles, Black Sabbath, (from my dad) and Bruce Springsteen (from my mom). My dad used to play in a cover band, and my siblings and I would sometimes to practices where they would practice "War Pigs", "Fairies Wear Boots", and "Paranoid"; hell, one of the first songs I learned bass was "Paranoid".
During the 90's I would tune into the radio and hear (and record on tape) "Perry Mason" and "Back on Earth" while enjoying "Crazy Train" (my sisters favorite at one time) and "Mr. Crowley" as well as the Sabbath classics "Iron Man" and "Paranoid". Hell, an album heavy in my rotation was "Nativity in Black", a tribute album to Black Sabbath; along with "Blizzard of Oz".
In 2018 I got to see him perform with Zakk Wylde at the Freedom Mortgage Center (Then the BB&T Center(whatever, it's the Camden Pavillion as far as I'm concerned)), and got tour shirt that said, "My last fucking tour, I swear!". He enjoyed himself up there, I could tell that he loved performing, I guess he was a people pleaser like that. Whenever my brother and I get together to jam, "War Pigs" and "Paranoid" are always played.
And then I heard the news today (oh boy), and while there is sadness; he will be celebrated, he was one of the original heavy metal gods, he was an icon in his time, a true legend. July 5th was both a tribute and celebration of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne; and a show of how many lives he touched. Not many get to retire in such lavish style, but Ozzy did; to see the bands he influenced perform all day and see fans know all the words to the songs he sang.
My condolences go to his family and all his fans, he will never be forgotten; and always celebrated.
