FINAL COLLECTION
- My final collection explores the seasons of the year through screen and digital printing. I am extremely happy with the final outcome of my collection, my passions of high quality painting and design have really shown throughout the pieces. Exploring other materials such as wallpaper, glass bottles and ceramic tiles in the later stages of the project was a fun experience and helped me develop a product range that would appeal to a wider public audience.
- Project titles:
Lavender & Lemon
Garden Party
Orange & Orchid
Autumn is in Season

SCREEN 3: AUTUMNAL LENGTH DEVORE
- After consideration and lots of testing I have decided to devore my final vegetable print to create the sheer background. I wasn’t completely happy with the white shiny background and felt it looked unfinished so I believe to devore was the right choice to make the print stand and more successful.
- Working off the tests I applied clear paste before using the devore to strengthen the delicate areas of the print. Where I had some overlaps of the screen, the devore is a strong chemical and therefore taken the print design out but overall I think the technique and process is of high quality. I am really pleased with the outcome of this final print, I think my screen printing and polychromatic skills have vastly improved and can see the development. Combining processes like this has been really fun and created a more intricate print. Moving forward I would like to continue with my technical development in devore as I like this technique.

CREATING CONTEXT DESIGN IMAGES
- For the final presentation of my collection I have started to design mini-context prints which will hang with each individual final sample. I decided to do this as a way to show how connected my prints are to the context they could possibly placed on. I will also have context boards with larger images but these small prints are look-book style design I believe demonstrate my engagement with who my audience is and this would appeal to them. Having the text with the images works really well to further explain the context idea.
- Above I have shown where my inspiration has come from for the layout and design of the context imagery. Image by Ellie Bryan found https://www.artsthread.com/portfolios/tropicalgeometricsss18/

NAPKIN DESIGNS FOR SELLING
- I have produced two hand-painted polychromatic napkin designs to be part of my ‘Garden Party’ collection and possible item I could sell in the degree show shop. My inspiration to create a product like a napkin has been influenced by the on-trend theme during this time of year where picnic and outdoor collections are released by shops such as H&M home and Next.
- I have designed 2 versions one with a smaller scale and the other with larger motifs and detail. I am extremely pleased with the outcome of these pieces the cotton drill fabric holds such a vibrant colour and really gives the impression of a hot summer garden party with fruity drinks.
- My next steps with these are to think of ways to market and package them professionally; could include price tags? colourful print wrapping paper?

CREATING PRODUCTS & EXPLORING NEW MATERIALS
- I have begun to think about possible products and new processes I would like to try to expand my summer collection further. I initially designed a pattern for a ceramic plate in the goal to use the UV printer to produce my design, however discussing with the technicians they advised me that because a plate isn’t flat the printer would cause a blurred image. I would still like the idea of table wear to be in my collection so have now created designs for ceramic coasters and glass bottles. I am really excited about using these materials that I haven’t explored before and new possibilities to showcase my print designs.
- Above I have digitally made mock-up context images of what I hope the final products my look like.

SCREEN 3: AUTUMNAL VEGETABLES 1.5 METRE LENGTH FINAL
- I have completed my large scale half-drop repeating length of my autumnal season print which is repeated 4 times on silk satin with procion dyes and Poylchromatic process. With this design I challenged myself by creating a half-drop repeat structure which meant the process of matching up was extremely hard however I believe this is my most successful screen printing I have done to date. The level of detail and colour of my polychromatic layer is what really brings to life this print. The green foliage leaves bend and curve round the fruits and vegetables to create a natural flow within the design and is definitely a strength I have developed from my other screen prints.
- My plan with this print has always been to devore the background using paste resist method however discussions with Jill and the technicians have made me question whether devore is the best way to move forward. I am worried to lose detail and quality in the process so I think I will consider other methods first and test.

CREATING A WEBSITE FOR SELF PROMOTION & PORTFOLIO
- I have designing a professional website that showcases my current project ‘Seasonal Scents’ for possible employers, public audience and as part of my self promotion going into the textile print industry. Creating this website has been a process I have really enjoyed, the overall aesthetic is very important to me as not only to look good but to be functional and would sit well among professionals.
- The website has a clean layout for ease of access to all my projects and work. I have categorised my final collection into 4 projects which all include corresponding drawings, design prints, samples and final pieces. I think this works extremely well for someone to quickly see how my design process works and where the prints come from.
- Moving forward I would like to create other parts of my professional portfolio which will include a CV, Business Cards and a Look Book.

FASHION PHOTOSHOOT WITH MY PRINT AS A BACKDROP
- A photography student friend (Amy Marsh Photography 3rd year) approached me and asked to use my Strawberry Garden Party print as a backdrop for a fashion photoshoot. Discussing with her the colours within the print she organised a stylist to design 2 outfits that compliment and match well to my patterned print. This collaboration with Amy was really fun and great experience to see how my print can be used in a new way.
- I think the fashion clothing works incredibly well with my pattern, and brings to life all the vibrant colours I have within my screen print. I would love to see my work used in a similar way again in the future; moving forward I will use these images in my context display as way to present the variety my printed textiles can be used.

PHOTOSHOOT OF FABRICS
- As the completion of this unit comes close to an end I have organised a studio shoot with a photography friend I know (Poppy West Photography 3rd Year) to get some images for my website, portfolio and professional practice. I think it is important to do these things early to show I am organised and engaging with my future and how I should start presenting my work. I haven’t finished my project so I don’t have all the images I would need to make a look book for Degree Show and other exhibitions.
- The shoot went really well; we explored photos with fabrics hanging on a rail, on invisible wire and from above to get a variety of images. Doing this shoot has made me aware going forward how I should present my work as the images look very professional and showcase my fabrics beautifully.

POLYCHROMATIC PRINT DEVELOPMENT
- I have produced a newer and developed version of a polychromatic print that I created early on in my project. I really liked the scale and the idea of it being a single placement print within my collection so wanted to improve the quality. Throughout the unit I have developed my polychromatic skills greatly and learned new skills and ways to get the best possible print.
- For this new print I made sure my screen was thoroughly cleaned as remnants of someone else’s design was left on the last print. I also increased the dye quantity to get the vibrant colours which was lacking in the first print. Lastly I decided to use cotton drill fabric which is thicker and holds the colour really well.
- Doing this process has shown me how much I have developed in this project and I am really pleased with the final outcome to sit within my collection.

FABRIC SWATCHES FOR SCENTING & TUTORIAL WITH HELEN
- I have been dyeing different coloured fabric swatches that I will use to scent with essential oils to match my prints. The colours correspond with the various scents: purple for lavender, red for rosemary, orange for orange, green for tea tree, yellow for lemongrass. Through my research colour association with sight and smell shows there is a strong connection and relates to memory.
- In discussion with Helen in a tutorial I showed her these samples with the various scents and she said to continue exploring this suggesting I think about the final presentation degree show and how I might incorporate the smell.
How do I get my message across? Petri dish with ingredients, organza bags with design on with the ingredients/smells inside.
Investigate display mechanisms? How have other people displayed work with smell before, textile print displays.
4 seasons story? how will I make sure there is a consistent link and journey throughout and how will this be affected by clash of degree show and new designers.

SCREEN 3: FIXING PROBLEMS AND FINDING SOLUTIONS
- After having problems with my devore sample I have explored and tested several options that could improve the quality of the print.
- First I have explored what difference can be made to the shine, vibrancy quality when put under the heat press. Here I have tried a small sample with my other screen facing down the shiny side when put under the heat press. I believe this has made a significant difference to the overall vibrant shine after washing and will continue with this technique going forward.
- The second image I have tested another devore fabric (Silk Viscose Georgette) to judge whether that fabric would better suit. I like the overall effect of this sample has comparing it: is a matte finish and the design can easily be seen on both sides which I really like. However I feel this fabric has a dullness about it the colours are less vibrant and once devored the sheer background is slightly more cream/dirty which I don’t like.
- The final test I have conducted is using clear paste over the fine line details near the heather flower and pomegranate which are too delicate with the strong devore chemical. I believe this has worked really well to strengthen those areas and think this is the best solution going forward.

SCREEN 3 COLOUR WAY TESTS & DEVORE SAMPLE
- I have been designing my drafting film large repeat screen 3 which is Autumnal themed with fruits and vegetables. I decided not to have a background layer because I really want to the design to stand out and I have the process of devore in my mind which will leave a sheer background. I believe I have development from my other screens and added much more detail in this design with 3 layers for the leaves and 1 Polychromatic layer.
- The first colour way test I have explored navy/grey leaves and keeping the colour scheme within the Polychromatic much more focused with reds, oranges and yellows. By doing this I think the outcome is really interesting however the fabric choice of bamboo melody doesn’t work well it is too white.
- The second colour way test I have explored more organic colours with shades of green and all the variations that would occur in the natural environment. I produced this sample on silk/satin fabric which I have then devored the background. I did experience some problems; the fine line details in the design have almost disappeared through the devore process as it is a strong chemical and areas of blocked screen have made a very uneven patchy print. Although there is problems I believe this is much more successful print and the colours are vibrant on this fabric. Moving forward the next steps are to tackle these problems with testing out ways to add more resist against the devore.

“STRAWBERRY GARDEN PARTY” 1.5 METRE LENGTH FINAL
- I have completed my large scale repeating length of my summer garden party print which is repeated 3 times on cotton twill with procion dyes and Polychromatic process. With this design I had 2 layers of Polychromatic to paint each time so took me about 12 hours to print but I am extremely pleased with the final outcome. The mixture of colourful fruits and fresh green plants really signifies this is a summer print that would look amazing as a textile print outdoors on a hot summers day on a hammock or chair.
- I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this screen, having more Polychromatic layers has really pushed my screen printing skills to make sure every print is exactly the same and of high standard. I look forward to seeing all my prints come together at the end of the project and doing more colourful screen printing.

CONTEXT DEVELOPMENT
- I have been experimenting with some possible context ideas for my autumn/winter project. Within my whole seasonal collection I want variety and so far focused on interiors but for my new vegetable prints I think they would suit a fashion context. Above I have explored 2 womenswear items, a tailored suit and a shirt/blouse which really bring to life how bold and colourful my print designs are. I would like to develop this fashion context further by researching into fashion fabrics to use when printing and print to scale.

SCREEN 3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
- I have begun designing my 3rd large screen design which is Autumnal inspired with fruits and vegetables. For this print I wanted to challenge myself in the design process by thinking about a more flowing and seamless repeat that I feel I can improve from my summer print. Furthermore, I want this print to be really busy and filled with greenery to symbolise the growing of vegetables in autumn.
- The first image I have created my design in a simple grid repeat the same I have with previous; I believe this creates quite a block and rigid design that isn’t successful. The repeat is doesn’t have the flow I am after.
- The second image I have explored the design in a half drop repeat structure and think this works a lot better. The green leaf branches connect together to produce a more seamless design that all joins and flows. Moving forward, I will begin the drafting film for this 3rd screen and explore colourways.

DESIGN PROCESS STARTS AGAIN: PAINTING AND DRAWING
- During the Easter Break I have been painting and drawing to begin the autumn/winter collection to continue my seasonal story. I have throughout enjoyed painting in a specific way with highly detailed and realistic style, I want to maintain this for consistent look in my final major project.
- For Autumn/Winter I want the art work to be clear it is designed with season in mind but to also explore some more unique, quirky vegetables and fruits to stand out. I think the paintings are really successful and will produce some great print designs. Moving forward the next step is to begin experimenting with print designs and combinations, I would like to create another large scale screen print, so need to begin that for after Easter.
