Week 12: Reflection
My overall theme within the illustration is the feeling of helplessness when you're doing something you know you shouldn't be, but you're unable to stop it. Something like taking drugs, or self harming, that you know you shouldn't be doing, but is exceptionally difficult to put a stop to. It was because of that I settled on the three words (reluctance, fear, resignation) to describe each panel of the tryptic as it represents that self perpetuating cycle of 'I don't want to do this' to 'I feel I have to do this'.
It's vicious and for that reason I included the exposing of the guts of this character as they slowly become resigned to the spiral they're stuck in. In the first panel you can see that although they are the one pulling their intestines out, their hands and body are bound by chains indicating they're not willingly doing this, in the second one the chains are gone but the chest is being peeled open, they're vulnerable and terrified, and in the final panel, the person is peeling their own chest open, and while the webs look like they could be controlling them, you can see that the webs are actually made of the person's own hair.
Really most of that cyclical element is based off the line "But the spider man is always hungry" from the original song, which (to me) really highlights that all consuming, never satiated vice like relationship between the person, and the action causing them such pain.

Week 10: Base Colours
Tumblr media
I altered the colours and final composition a little I really wanted to get across the gradual fading and desaturation of the subject of the illustration, the hair and skin gradually bleed from being darker to pale and wan. The cloth as well goes from darker and rich to white and grey.

Week 10: Basic Lighting Pass
Tumblr media
The lighting in each panel comes from the white element, the hands in the first one, the heart in the second and the fabric and web in the last. The face in each panel is more and more in shadow. The idea with the three illustrations is that its a progression on control and fear, my three adjectives are:
. Reluctance
. Fear
. Resignation
It’s symbolising that journey the song illustrates for me, the relationship between a person and their vice or bad habit, how it can go from being something unwilling and controlled (hence the hands in the first panel) to something unhinged and dangerous and uncontrolled (hence the webs and lack of hands holding the wrists/ ankles).
There’s also the potential to have the current composition cropped in a certain way to look further at the themes I’m presenting.

Week 10: Peer Feedback
Tumblr media
Main feedback is surrounding altering the colour palette, and positioning of the middle figure, the general idea is that the alternative design I did for the centre panel (where the figure is tearing their own throat) is a more dynamic, dramatic pose that portrays my intent better. I may use it to replace the last or first. My worry at the moment is that the panels are all too similar, like they’re all portraying a similar thing, perhaps I should replace the first panel?

From here I’m going to add and do some colour swatches, see what fits best and meshes with the illustration well.

Week 9: Panel 2 developments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Different iterations of the second panel, I think the third one is my favourite, it really captures that feeling of being trapped and taken apart. The partial obscuring of the spider as well helps show that terror but being unable to do anything about it.
Also, the symmetry helps compliment the other two panels either side of it. The first one I love the dynamics of though...

Week 9: Interim Developments
Based off feedback received during interim, there are a couple things I’d like to alter with my work:
1. The central panel feels very out of pocket and like it doesn’t fit in with the other two, it’s just too busy and the message gets lost in it.
2. The colours aren’t right, I need to do some further experiments with them in order to get a palette I’m happier with.
3. The three words I’m associating with each panel are Consumption, Fear and Resignation which all fit both the song and my interpretation. Consumption comes back in multiple references in the song “His tongue in my eyes”, “I know the spider-man is having me for dinner tonight”, “feels like I’m being eaten by a thousand million shivering, furry holes”. Fear is a theme throughout the entire song “shivering in bed,”, “victim”. And resignation is seen towards the end of the song where the victim says “And I know that in the morning I will wake up in the shivering cold And the spiderman is always hungry” so they know it’ll repeat but there’s nothing that they can do about it.
4. I’m toning it back on the eyes, they don’t really have that much to do with my theme.
5. I’ve refined my interpretation to: feeling obligated to do something even though you know it’s tearing you apart/ giving away yourself until there’s nothing left but not being able to stop.
6. I’m taking more inspiration from Emilyena as an artist model but still keeping Takato Yamamoto’s strange beauty, resigned facial expressions and elegant posing.

Pre-Rendering
Half way through putting down the base colours of this illustration I remembered an artist I personally admire a lot who also illustrates slightly gory, horror based art. She’s called EmilyenaStrange on Twitter ( https://twitter.com/EmilyenaStrange ) And I love her use of texture, muted colours and shapes to create a spooky atmosphere.

Week 8: Development
Tumblr media
I’m taking inspiration from Japanese artist Takato Yamamoto whose art carries the same creepy, gory beauty that I’m trying to convey within my own triptych. He also has a lot of symmetry mixed with elements of asymmetry, which I’m trying to replicate in the actual formation of the illustrations while still maintaining the non-linear element of the illustration.
