Wednesday 100: Stir Crazy

Set in tbbfiy Fraser’s Ridge era 🥰

It was on the fourth day stuck inside from the snow that Jamie sent the children outside to expel their energy — told them not to return until they were pink-cheeked with cold and ready to be still.

Claire had anticipated his plans just for them, but she was surprised to get pulled into their pantry, hardly big enough to hold them both.

“What—”

“I’ll no’ risk the interruptions. Christ, ye’re wearing too many skirts!”

She tilted up, laughing, into a kiss.

When one young Fraser returned, looking for them, she didn’t begrudge Jamie for the hand slipped over her mouth.

Filling in some blanks for the Claire Stay au that started with Astronomy Lessons

Jamie took Claire’s hand, tears spilling down his face, and braced for the moment his heart would leave him. Except — he pressed Claire’s hand to the stone… and nothing happened.

Claire turned, sobbing in relief, and curled herself around him. It hadn’t worked. “You’re coming with me, James Fraser. I don’t care where, but we’re going together.”

He’d already tried to send her away; his heart wasn’t strong enough to consider it again. He wanted to fall to his knees and thank the Lord for keeping her here. And if they left immediately, they could still catch up to Fergus.

There were several times over the past six months that she’d thought they were mad for doing this — starting over at their ages of fifty and fifty-five with sleepless nights and infant colic when even with the blessing of youth, they still would’ve struggled through this stage of parenting.

Claire knew others thought they were mad, too.

But Jamie never had a moment’s doubt; he’d paced a tread into their floorboards from the rough nights and promised Bonnie all the while that she was home, loved and safe. Claire needed only the sight of them to silence her own doubt.

Wednesday 100: Wherever I’m With You

In readjusting to life in the cabin after the Big House, Claire found the once-familiar rhythm each December morning, rising and quietly bustling around the hearth to make tea, piping hot to burn away the chill.

She didn’t look up at the sound of small feet scurrying down the loft’s ladder and into the bed, but when Claire turned back towards them with two mugs, Bonnie was already tucked under Jamie’s arm and drifting back to sleep. Watching them, she felt both the magnanimous loss of their home, and how her whole world could still fit in a one-room cabin.
