Don’t Believe This Enterprise Imaging Integration Myth
As a healthcare IT professional, you may have heard that achieving enterprise imaging integration is a daunting task. Most imaging IT vendors would like you to believe that integration is a complex, esoteric discipline requiring cost-prohibitive fees to accomplish. This is a common myth,
Dicom Systems is here to dispel the myth that integration is either esoteric or expensive. Dicom Systems’ natively vendor-neutral approach to DICOM, HL7 and FHIR integration supports the company’s goal: to create an Enterprise Imaging IT ecosystem that is cohesively and affordably integrated. Dicom’s focus is on interoperability.
To that end, Dicom Systems offers a number of integration solutions:
DCMSYS IHE Gateway helps integrate your current DICOM and HL7 devices to use IHE profiles.
Interface WebBridge Improves accessibility of patient data. Allows any native or web-based third party application to upload any non-standard data (JPEG, TIFF, PDF, TXT) to Workflow Unifier and Unifier Archive.
FireBridge makes any interface FHIR-ready and DICOMweb-enabled. Extends the useful life of your current systems by bringing them up to the latest interoperability standards.
Enterprise Imaging Integration is definitely within reach for healthcare organizations of any size.
A free demo and free Dicom software download are available for healthcare IT professionals interested in Enterprise Imaging Integration.

3 Ways Enterprise Imaging Solutions Are Improving Healthcare
Health care is advancing at a rapid pace; yet the lack of integration between health care providers can lead to fragmentation of a patient’s experience. Despite the instant connectivity we take for granted in our daily lives, it is still not uncommon for the a CT scan to be messengered over from one hospital to another, only to find that the second hospital’s system can’t read the file due to a different in standards.
This lack of integration can result in medical errors and diagnostic redundancies, leading to dire human and financial consequences.
To address this issue, Dicom systems, a leading Silicon Valley-based health IT Company, offers a variety of comprehensive ENTERPRISE IMAGING SOLUTIONS:
1.    Dicom’s Workflow Unifier simplifies radiology workflows across disparate healthcare enterprises
2.    DICOM and HL7 Router is a Linux-based router that provides Enterprise-level connectivity for remote sites
3.    3. DICOM Modality Work list automates the transfer of information from any HIS/RIS/EMR to any number of modalities.
A free demo and free Dicom software download are available for health care IT professionals looking to achieve greater integration or efficiencies in their organizations’ systems.

The Interoperability Challenge - A Case Study Summary
A leading cancer treatment and research health system faced these challenges of interoperability, which caused reduced productivity and poor resource management:
•  Modality resource management - Imaging modalities sent images to multiple destinations. Computing cycles utilized for routing slowed down imaging operations, reducing departmental productivity and increasing loss of revenue.
•  Excess point-to-point integrations -Without a cohesive and standardized methodology to handle the installation and interoperability of various modalities, departments resorted to a tedious process of manual, point-to-point integration for each modality one.
•  Non-standard DICOM -Modalities and other DICOM devices transmitted image sets that include non-standard or proprietary DICOM tags.
•  Mitigation of Workflow Disruptions and Productivity Loss- Lack of interoperability created unplanned downtime in the PACS, RIS,or EMR caused substantial imaging workflow disruptions and productivity losses that far outlasted the downtime itself.
•  Fragmentation of DICOM Modality Work Lists (MWL) - Each PACS/RIS vendor typically provided its own unique Modality Work List, which turned into a configuration and business continuance challenge in the event of a system failure.
•  Tedious HL7 feed enabling - For each new HL7 feed request, IT would typically needed to undergo a tedious, time-consuming integration with the EMR vendor, a process that could span a period of several weeks of bidirectional configuration and testing.
The Interoperability Solution Dicom Systems’ core platform, the Enterprise Imaging Workflow Unifier, provided the health system with a controlled environment and technology that empowers IT and clinical personnel to own the entire process without having to develop or maintain a costly homegrown product.

3 Interoperability and Collaboration Lessons Learned at IHE Connectathon in Cleveland
The IHE North American Connectathon 207 brought together a large and diverse group of Health IT vendors.
This was a unique environment for Health IT vendors to collaborate -- rather than compete -- to demonstrate what is possible in the world of disparate systems and varying healthcare information standards.
 Interoperability Lessons Learned:
 1. Unprecedented Collaboration Between Health IT Vendors: the level of collaboration, openness and collegial atmosphere at the interoperability event was very impressive. As a result, bidirectional workflows setup were successfully created between Dicom Systems, GE and Epic. This collaboration sets the stage for Dicom Systems Unifier platform to become the enterprise imaging contributor in a live cancer-related simulation at the HIMSS 2017 Interoperability Showcase.
 2.  HL7 and DICOM Standards Are Still Dominant
Most healthcare organizations still rely on tried and true standards such as HL7 and DICOM. Many routinely need to resolve basic DICOM routing and HL7 routing challenges related to having multiple, poorly integrated vendors within their IT ecosystem. As a result, DICOM routers and HL7 routers still fulfill a vital operational role for our customers.
3. Planning For Future Healthcare Data Standards Is Critical To Ensuring Interoperability
Participation in collaborative industry events prepares Health IT vendors for the future, when large health systems are expected to fully adopt one of the newer standards, such as XDS. Innovative health IT companies as Dicom Systems are prepared to support healthcare organizations when the new standards are adopted.
Looking forward to HIMSS 2017 in Orlando: Interoperability Showcase will be a special event to watch. This invaluable experience will translate into benefits for all healthcare customers by substantially shortening the learning curve that seemingly plagues every new integration project.
